Chapter 2

Siena POV

Three days later, I stood in the pouring rain at the sprawling city cemetery.

The rain fell in relentless sheets, drumming against the black dome of my umbrella. The children were not with me. I had left Mia and Leo with a trusted neighbor—they were too young to understand why their father’s coffin was being lowered into the mud, and I would not let their last memory of him be a polished wooden box.

I had orchestrated a minimalist funeral. No flowers. No grand speeches.

I told the Family it was to conserve wealth for my children’s future. That was only half the truth. The other half was that I refused to spend a single dollar on a ceremony for a man who was still breathing.

Beneath the umbrella, I watched the wooden casket descend.

Goodbye, Leonardo.

My fingers tightened around the handle until my knuckles whitened. He had been the quieter twin, the one who slipped my children hard candies when he thought no one was looking. He had never raised his voice at me, never raised his hand. And he had been murdered by the brother who shared his face.

You deserved better than a brother who traded your life for his freedom.

I lifted my gaze slowly, across the open grave, through the gray curtain of rain.

Lorenzo stood there. The rain had plastered his dark hair to his forehead, and his borrowed suit hung on him like a confession. He watched me with hungry, calculating eyes, already measuring the territory he believed would soon be his.

I stared back at him, composed, unblinking. Let him think I was too broken to fight. Let him see a widow drowning in grief.

He didn’t know I was already planning his ruin.

As the gravediggers began to shovel wet earth onto the casket, I turned away. The sound of soil striking wood followed me down the path—a dull, final drumbeat.

But first, I needed to arm myself. And in this world, the deadliest weapon was paper.

The next morning, I took the territory deeds straight to Consigliere Romano’s office.

Chapter 3

Siena POV

I sat in the leather chair across from Romano's desk at Syndicate headquarters. The air was thick with the pungent smell of polish wax.

"I want to sell Lorenzo's territory rights to your daughter, Isabella," I told him.

Romano stopped writing. He looked up, stunned.

Isabella's husband was a rising star in the Family, but he needed an established front and routes to secure his Capo seat.

"You want to sell Lorenzo's three southern smuggling lines, his four casinos, and the two warehouses?" Romano asked, narrowing his eyes.

"For eight hundred thousand dollars in laundered cash," I replied. "A clean buyout."

Romano leaned back in his chair. He studied my face, looking for any sign of hesitation.

He knew the territory was worth at least two million. I was offering him a massive discount for speed and safety.

"It is legal under Syndicate law for a widow to transfer assets internally," Romano confirmed slowly, a shrewd smile touching his lips.

"Then let's do the paperwork," I said.

By noon, Romano handed me a heavy metal briefcase containing eight hundred thousand dollars in untraceable bills.

Combined with my widow's severance, I now possessed nearly a million dollars.

Enough to disappear. Enough to rebuild. Enough to ensure my children never tasted hunger again.

That afternoon, I rented a secure, luxury apartment in a neutral zone, miles away from the Family's main compound.

Two days later, I signed the lease on a beautiful, upscale cafe on the edge of Family territory.

I bought espresso machines, hired clean staff, and opened the doors.

The morning we opened, Consigliere Romano walked past. He didn't come inside, but he tipped his hat to me through the window—a silent acknowledgment. The next day, the Syndicate issued a quiet order: my business was under protection.

I had turned blood money into clean money. But I should have known the vultures wouldn't stay away for long.
