Chapter 1

Chloe POV:

My lungs were on fire.

Every ragged gasp tore through my chest, sharp and burning, dragging frigid rain deep into my throbbing lungs. The thin, soaked dress clung to my skin like a frozen second skin, heavy and suffocating. Bare feet scraped the gritty, slick asphalt of the alley as I stumbled forward, desperate for steady footing on the slippery ground.

Behind me, thunderous shouts cut through the downpour, rough and furious, fueling my terror.

"Don’t let her run! Grab her!"

"She can’t get far! Catch the Omega bitch!"

The snarls of my pursuers echoed off the damp brick walls, paired with the roaring growl of an SUV engine closing in fast. Tires screeched over rain-filled puddles, sending filthy water splashing high up my calves. Blinding white headlights locked onto my trembling figure, pinning me down like a terrified wild animal trapped in a hunter’s cruel snare.

I risked a shaking glance over my shoulder.

The black SUV was merely feet from my heels. Through the rain-streaked windshield, I spotted Nash Cobb’s cold, unyielding face—my designated guardian, my ruthless jailer. His icy gaze tracked my every stumbling move, sharp with anger and contempt.

His voice boomed over the storm, harsh and unforgiving, laying bare every ugly truth I’d spent months running from.

"Stop this foolishness, Chloe! You think you can escape? Your family sold you off to Bud George, and you’re going to marry him whether you like it or not!" he barked, the words laced with vicious mockery. "Running won’t save you! You’re bound to that man, and we’re bringing you back to seal the deal tonight!"

A violent, twisting dread coiled tight in my stomach, squeezing the breath from my chest. That was why they hunted me relentlessly. Why I’d fled my home in the dead of this storm. My own family had thrown me away, forcing me into a marriage with the vile, lecherous Bud George to settle their petty pack debts. I’d rather die than submit to that fate.

My foot slipped on a slick patch of pavement.

The world tilted violently. A sharp twinge flared through my knee as I crashed hard onto the rough concrete. I cried out, but my scream was swallowed whole by the howling wind and pouring rain.

The SUV’s engine cut out abruptly. The sudden silence was far more terrifying than the chaotic chase. A soft click sounded as one car door opened, then another.

Two large, menacing silhouettes stepped into the rain, moving with slow, predatory calm that turned my blood to ice. They had all the time in the world. They knew I had nowhere left to run, no one to turn to.

Pure panic flooded my veins, spiking my adrenaline and forcing me to move.

I scrambled unsteadily to my feet, ignoring the stinging pain in my knee, and lurched out of the dark alley mouth. The bustling chaos of the main road crashed over me at once—blurring red taillights, blaring honking horns, and the unceasing, torrential rain pouring down from the black sky.

They couldn’t drag me back. They couldn’t force me into that car, couldn’t make me wear that suffocating dress, couldn’t hand me over to Bud George. The thought of his greasy smirk and wandering, lewd hands was infinitely more terrifying than death itself.

I ran blindly, straight into the rushing flow of traffic, desperate for any shred of salvation.

A deafening horn blared inches from me.

I caught a flash of sleek silver metal—a powerful Aston Martin cutting through the sheets of rain. The driver reacted instantly, tires screeching loudly as the car slammed on its brakes, slowing sharply to avoid hitting me.

There was no time to think, no time to swerve. In my frantic bid for help, I threw myself forward toward the halted car.

My body collided lightly with the car’s hood. The force of my desperate sprint knocked me backward, and I crumpled onto the wet street. The impact was not brutal, only rough, leaving me with stinging grazes on my palms and forearms, no severe injuries.

For a long moment, only the patter of rain and a high, piercing ringing in my ears existed.

The world blurred into a watery, smudged haze. I tried to push myself up, my arms shaking uncontrollably. My palms burned with raw, shallow scrapes, damp with rainwater.

Through the fog of panic and faint pain, I spotted the iconic Aston Martin logo—elegant, luxurious, a world completely foreign to my ruined life.

It was my only chance, my last sliver of hope.

I lifted a trembling hand and slammed it weakly against the car hood. The sound was pathetic, a faint thud drowned out by the raging storm.

"Please…" I breathed out in a ragged, broken whisper. "Help me!"

Splashing footsteps drew rapidly near. Nash and his men were closing in. I could feel their smug triumph, their certainty that they’d caught their runaway prey.

Nash’s knuckles rapped sharply against the driver’s window, his voice sickly polite and false. "Sir, my apologies for the disturbance. This is a private Pack matter. The Omega is just being disobedient, running from her arranged marriage."

He spoke the word "Omega" like it was a filthy disease, like it justified every cruelty they’d inflicted on me. Like it explained my defiance, my desperation to flee, my worthlessness in their eyes.

Cold, crushing despair washed over me. He was right. In this brutal pack world, that single label stripped me of all rights, all voice, all humanity.

The driver’s window stayed tightly shut. I leaned forward, straining to see through the tinted back window, praying for a single flicker of mercy.

Nothing.

Then the rear door swung open.

A polished black leather shoe stepped onto the wet pavement, followed by a long, muscular leg clad in a perfectly tailored dark suit. The man who stepped out was impossibly tall, moving with a quiet grace that defied the raging storm around him.

Cold rain plastered his dark hair to his forehead and soaked the shoulders of his expensive suit, yet he did not flinch, did not show a single sign of discomfort.

But it was not his striking appearance that made the air crackle with tension.

It was his overwhelming power.

Pure, unbridled Alpha authority rolled off him in crushing invisible waves, squeezing my already failing lungs tight. A primal, dominant aura that commanded absolute submission. A moment earlier, Nash and his men had swaggered with arrogance—now they froze rigid, their faces draining pale, every muscle tensing in instinctive, terrified surrender to a superior predator.

The man rounded the front of the car, his storm-gray eyes fixed firmly on Nash, not on me. His gaze was deep, impenetrable, and cold enough to freeze the rain mid-fall.

He stopped beside my crumpled form.

Without a single word, he shrugged off his suit jacket, still warm from his body heat. He bent low and draped the heavy fabric gently over my shaking shoulders. His scent wrapped around me—sandalwood mixed with the crisp, clean freshness of night air—a shocking, tender comfort amid utter chaos and terror.

He still had not glanced at me. His icy gray stare remained locked on Nash.

"She asked for my help," he stated. His voice was a low, deep rumble that vibrated through the rain-soaked air, cutting effortlessly through the storm’s noise.

Nash swallowed hard, scrambling to regain his bravado. "Sir, this is a Raymond Pack internal affair—"

The Alpha cut him off instantly. He did not raise his voice. He did not need to.

"Get lost."

The single command was absolute, unnegotiable. It was not a request. It was an unshakable law.

Nash and his men flinched as if struck. For a heartbeat, they stood frozen, torn between their orders to capture me and the primal terror this powerful Alpha ignited in their bones.

Then they scrambled backward toward their SUV, tripping over each other in their desperate haste to obey.

The black vehicle peeled away, speeding into the rain-blurred night until it vanished completely.

I knelt trembling on the cold pavement, wrapped in a stranger’s warmth, pinned under the unreadable, heavy gaze of the most powerful man I had ever encountered.

Chapter 2

Donovan POV:

The scent of lilies and rain filled my car.

It was her scent. The moment she'd slammed into my vehicle, it had hit me. A fragrance that bypassed my nose and struck something deep in my soul, something ancient and primal.

My wolf had recognized it instantly.

Mine.

The word had echoed in my skull, a possessive, feral roar that I had spent years learning to control. Now, that control was being tested.

I watched her from the corner of my eye. She was huddled in the corner of the backseat, clutching my jacket around her small frame as if it were a life raft. Her head was bowed, her wet, dark hair hiding her face. She was trembling, either from the cold or the aftershocks of fear. Probably both.

Leo drove with his usual silent efficiency, the Aston Martin gliding through the city streets. The chaos of the confrontation was left far behind, sealed out by the soundproofed interior. All that remained was the soft hum of the engine, the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers, and the girl's soft, ragged breaths.

She finally broke the silence.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice so quiet I almost didn't catch it.

I didn't respond. Words felt inadequate. Instead, I pulled a clean, folded handkerchief from my inner pocket and held it out to her.

She flinched slightly as I moved, her head snapping up. Her eyes, the color of a clear summer sky, were wide and wary. They were also bruised with exhaustion. After a moment's hesitation, she took the handkerchief, her small, cold fingers brushing against mine.

A jolt, like a static shock, shot up my arm.

Her eyes widened further, and she quickly looked away, dabbing at the mixture of rain and blood on her face. Her knee was bleeding through a tear in her thin dress, staining the fine leather of my seat.

I didn't care.

I found myself studying her. The delicate line of her jaw, the stubborn set of her mouth even in distress. There was a strength in her, a resilience that the pathetic news reports I'd scanned earlier had failed to capture.

"What's your name?" I asked. The question was rougher than I intended.

She jumped, startled by my voice. "Chloe. Chloe Beaumont."

Chloe. I rolled the name around in my mind. It suited her.

My phone buzzed silently in my pocket. A message from Finn, my head of security. Raymond Pack is covering it up. They're telling guests she was found and will be at the wedding tomorrow.

Fools. They were trying to salvage a business deal, blind to the fact that they had just lost their most valuable asset. Not to another Pack, but to me.

I glanced at Chloe again. The adrenaline was fading, leaving a deep, bone-weary exhaustion in its place. Her eyelids were drooping, her body slumping further into the seat.

Her head began to nod forward, jerking back up each time she started to drift off. Finally, she lost the battle. Her head lolled to the side, coming to rest gently against my shoulder.

My entire body went rigid.

She was so light, her weight barely a pressure against me. I could feel the soft strands of her hair tickling my neck. The lily scent was stronger now, intoxicating. It seeped into my senses, calming the restless beast inside me.

My wolf purred with a satisfaction so profound it was almost painful.

I resisted the urge to wrap my arm around her, to pull her closer, to fully claim what was mine. It was too soon. She was a frightened, cornered creature. I would not be another cage.

Instead, I shifted my weight slightly, angling my body to give her a more comfortable resting place.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Leo's eyes widen in shock for a fraction of a second before he schooled his expression back to professional neutrality. He knew better than to comment.

The car descended into the quiet, brightly lit security of my building's private garage.

"We've arrived, Alpha," Leo said softly, his voice a low murmur.

Chloe didn't stir. She was fast asleep, her face peaceful for the first time since I'd seen her. The harsh lines of fear and pain had smoothed away, leaving a soft vulnerability that made my protective instincts roar to life.

I wasn't going to wake her.

Carefully, I slid my arm under her knees and the other around her back, lifting her into my arms. She murmured something in her sleep, a soft, incoherent sound, and snuggled closer against my chest.

Her trust, even unconscious, was a brand against my skin.

I carried her out of the car and into the private elevator. The doors slid shut, and we ascended in silence, rising above the sleeping city.

The elevator opened directly into the foyer of my penthouse. The space was dark, the floor-to-ceiling windows showing a million pinpricks of light from the city below.

I carried her through the silent, cavernous living room and into one of the guest suites. The bed was a king-sized expanse of white linens. I laid her down gently, her body sinking into the soft mattress.

For a long moment, I just stood there, watching the gentle rise and fall of her chest.

She was safe. She was here.

She was mine.

Chapter 3

Donovan POV:

I stood by the bed, watching her sleep.

Even in the dim light filtering in from the hallway, I could see the faint purple bruise forming on her temple and the angry red scrape on her knee. Her brow was furrowed, her lips pressed into a thin line. Whatever demons chased her in the waking world had followed her into her dreams.

My hand lifted, my fingers itching to smooth the worry from her forehead, to feel the softness of her skin. I stopped myself just an inch away. It was an intimacy I hadn't yet earned.

With a final, lingering look, I pulled the door quietly shut and walked back into the living room.

Dr. Alistair Hayes was already there, waiting by the bar with his black leather medical bag at his feet. His salt-and-pepper hair was perfectly combed, his suit immaculate. He was the only person I trusted with my life, and consequently, the only one who could get away with the disapproving look he was giving me now.

"Your suit is ruined," he stated flatly, his eyes scanning my rain-soaked form. "Another stray, Donovan?"

I ignored his dry tone. "There's a girl in the west guest room. She's injured. Take care of it. Be quiet."

Alistair's eyebrow shot up. It was the most emotion I'd seen from him in years. Without another word, he picked up his bag and headed down the hall.

I went to my study. The sleek, minimalist room was my sanctuary, a place of cold logic and hard data. I sat at my desk and opened my laptop. Finn had already sent the file.

Chloe Beaumont.

The screen filled with headlines, each one more venomous than the last.

"Raymond's Ward Defies Pack: A Scandalous Affair with George Heir."

"The Omega's Deception: Chloe Beaumont's History of Promiscuity."

The articles were accompanied by a photo. It was grainy, clearly taken from a distance, but the image was damning. Chloe, looking disheveled, in the arms of a smirking, heavyset man I recognized as Bud George. The angle was deliberately misleading, crafted to look like a clandestine embrace rather than what it likely was: an assault.

A low growl rumbled in my chest. The temperature in the study seemed to drop several degrees.

This was the work of the Raymond Pack. A crude, brutal campaign to destroy her reputation and force her into a marriage that would benefit them. They were selling her, and smearing her name to ensure she had no other options.

The door to the study opened, and Alistair walked in. He closed it behind him, his face grim.

"Her injuries are superficial," he reported, setting his bag down. "Bruises, scrapes. I cleaned and dressed them. But her vitals are all over the place. She's suffering from extreme emotional distress and exhaustion. Donovan, you need to get her out of here."

I looked up from the screen. "Give me a reason."

"I have several," he said, his voice tight with concern. "Her name is Chloe Beaumont. She's the adopted daughter of the Raymond Pack's Alpha. Her marriage to Bud George is the biggest society news in the city. By taking her, you've declared war on two Packs."

"It's not a war they can win," I said, my voice flat.

Alistair sighed, a sound of deep frustration. "For God's sake, think about your own position! The Sterling Pack is still unstable. Your father is weak, your stepmother is ambitious, and your half-brother is a fool, but a dangerous one. You just got back. You can't afford to make powerful enemies over some... Omega you found on the street."

He thought this was about lust. A momentary lapse in judgment. He couldn't possibly understand the truth.

"My affairs are my own, Alistair," I said, my tone a clear dismissal.

He shook his head, grabbing his bag. "Fine. But don't say I didn't warn you when this blows up in your face."

He left, and the study was silent once more. But his words lingered. He was right about my family. They were circling, waiting for any sign of weakness. Bringing Chloe here was a risk.

A risk I was more than willing to take.

I closed the laptop and walked back to her room, pushing the door open a crack. I just needed to see that she was still safe.

She was tossing in her sleep, the silk sheets tangled around her legs. A sheen of cold sweat glistened on her forehead.

She began to murmur, her voice thick with sleep and fear.

"No... it wasn't me... let me go..."

My fists clenched at my sides. I could feel her terror like a physical thing, a cold spike in the air. I wanted to find the people who did this to her and tear them apart.

Then, her frantic murmurs softened. Her voice changed, becoming fragile, almost tender. A single name escaped her lips, a broken whisper filled with a longing that felt like a punch to my gut.

"Emilio..."

The name hung in the silent room. A man's name.

Who the hell was Emilio?

A cold, possessive fury, dark and ugly, coiled in my stomach. It was a raw, primitive jealousy I had never experienced before. I had just found her, and she was dreaming of someone else.

My wolf snarled in my head. She is ours. Only ours.

I didn't know who this Emilio was. A past lover? A friend? It didn't matter.

He was the past. I was her future.

From this moment on, she belonged to me. And I would make damn sure that my name was the only one she ever whispered in her dreams.
