Chapter 1

Seven years into our marriage, my husband, Ivan Vaughn, grew tired of me and took an art student as his mistress.

He was completely smitten. On our wedding anniversary weekend, he claimed he had a business trip to Silicon Valley—an excuse to fly her to a Napa Valley winery.

That very night, my three-year-old son, Liam, had a severe asthma attack. I called him twenty times. He never answered. I finally found him by breaking down his mistress's apartment door. He was in bed with her, his phone silenced.

That night, Liam stopped breathing in my arms.

At the funeral, Ivan held me, begging for forgiveness and vowing to put our family back together. For Liam's last wish—"I hope Mommy and Daddy will be together forever"—I agreed.

Four years later, an Instagram video from a charity gala went viral. It featured Ivan, a radiant Ingrid Jensen, and their three-year-old son.

The boy beamed at the camera, holding up a small trophy. "Look, Mommy, Daddy!" he chirped. "We're the happiest family in the world!"

My husband, Ivan Vaughn, finally stumbled home late that night. The moment he flicked on the lights, I fought back the icy dread that had taken root in my heart since I saw the video.

He paused, then strolled toward me. "Still awake?"

A familiar scent drifted from him—the same expensive, organic children's body wash my son, Liam, had loved before he died. I froze.

It hit me then. Everyone in our circle must have known about his other "family" for years, all bound by an unspoken pact to keep me in the dark.

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat, pulled up the video on my phone, and turned the screen to face him. His body went rigid, panic flashing in his eyes.

"That's Ingrid's child," he stammered. "Her boyfriend abandoned them. I was just helping out of pity."

He pulled me into his arms, his cheek pressing against my neck. "You know I broke things off with her after Liam… after he passed."

"Then explain this!" I shoved him away, slapping a birth certificate down on the coffee table.

If I hadn't seen that video, I never would have thought to look. There, on the open page under the father’s name, was his signature in cold, black ink: Ivan Vaughn.

After a long, heavy silence, Ivan sighed, collapsing onto the sofa and rubbing his temples.

"Four years ago, when Liam died, I was ready to come home. But then Ingrid told me she was pregnant," he explained, his eyes pleading with me.

My expression was unreadable.

"I know how much you love children," he continued, his voice softening. "Since we lost ours… I thought maybe letting you raise Aaron could help you heal. My only contact with her has been for the boy's sake."

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. The hatred I had suppressed for four years roared back to life.

He stood and took my hands, his expression softening into what he must have thought was a picture of sincerity. "I've really changed. I never wanted to betray our marriage."

I wrenched my hands free and snatched the birth certificate, tearing it to shreds. "I will never forgive the person who helped kill my son, and I will never raise a bastard child!"

He froze, stunned by my vehemence.

I fought back tears, my throat tight with fury. "You let that boy use Liam's body wash. You take him to places Liam never got to see. You've given him the life that should have been Liam's. You don't deserve to be his father!"

His lips thinned into a hard, displeased line. "Say what you want about me, but Aaron is innocent."

I bit my lip, a wave of exhaustion washing over me. "Let's get a divorce."

"No!" He grabbed the front of my shirt, his voice desperate. "If you don't want to see them, I'll send them away! We promised Liam we would be together forever."

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang. Ivan opened it and froze. "What are you doing here?"

Ingrid Jensen stood on our doorstep, soaked from the rain, her son cradled in her arms. Her eyes darted warily to me. "Aaron has been crying for you all night," she whispered. "I couldn't calm him down."

Aaron Jensen reached for Ivan, his voice thick with tears. "Daddy, I want to sleep with you and Mommy tonight."

Chapter 2

A flicker of reluctance crossed Ivan's face. He glanced at me, his hands dropping uselessly to his sides.

Aaron's lower lip trembled, his eyes welling up. "Daddy, don't you love me anymore?"

Ingrid’s eyes met mine, and she flinched, quickly clapping a hand over Aaron's mouth. "I'm so sorry, but the kindergarten's 'Family Career Day' project… I didn't want to bother you, but Ivan wasn't answering his phone. The assignment is due tomorrow, so…"

Ingrid lowered her eyes, her face a study in guilt. I watched, my own expression unreadable, trying to smother the rage building inside me.

They had been together all day at a gala, and only now did she remember his homework.

"Can you just help?" she pleaded. "I don't want Aaron to be seen as a child without a father."

A dam of rage broke inside me. "Get out," I snarled. "Both of you, get out of my house!"

Aaron had a father to help with his homework, a father present for every important moment.

Liam, on the other hand, had a father who missed every school event, who never cared about his milestones, who was nowhere to be found when his asthma flared and he was fighting for breath. He was the one who truly grew up without a father.

Ivan shielded Aaron's ears, his face darkening. "Daphne. There's a child here."

Ingrid's eyes reddened as she hugged Aaron tighter. "Daphne, I know you hate me. Hit me, curse me, I'll take it. But please, don't take it out on Aaron. He's innocent."

She buried her face in the boy's hair, her shoulders shaking with sobs. "You were a mother once. Surely you can understand how I feel."

Suddenly, Aaron scrambled down from her arms and lunged at me, slamming a toy metal race car into my lower abdomen. I cried out, stumbling back against the bar counter as a sharp, searing pain shot through me.

Before I could regain my balance, his small fists began pummeling me, each blow sending a fresh wave of pain through me. "Don't bully my mommy, you bad woman! You can't take my daddy away!"

Wincing, I pushed him away, my face pale as I clutched my stomach.

He immediately threw himself to the floor and began to wail. "I hate you! You stole my daddy and bullied my mommy! My family is broken because of you! I'm not a happy little boy anymore!"

Ivan instantly scooped him up, patting his back. "It's okay, Aaron. Daddy will protect you."

He fixed me with an icy glare that could have cut glass. "You'll pay for this, Daphne. For hurting my son."

"I'm so sorry you had to see that, sweetie," Ingrid sobbed, clutching Aaron. "Let's go home."

Ivan's expression softened. He pulled them both into a protective embrace. "No. Don't go. This is your home now."

I watched the perfect picture of their little family, a bitter irony twisting in my gut. The searing pain in my abdomen made every detail excruciatingly clear.

Sensing my gaze, Ivan awkwardly released Ingrid and rounded on me. "You're a vicious woman, Daphne! How could you take your issues out on a child? He's just a little boy; he doesn't know any better!"

Tears blurred my vision as I stared at the boy in his arms. When Ivan wasn't looking, Aaron stuck his tongue out at me and made a face.

"What kind of child demands to sleep with you and your wife?" I retorted. "What kind of child hits someone with a toy car and gets praised for it? He's your son, all right," I added. "He's learned your despicable tricks perfectly!"

A vein bulged on Ivan's forehead. "That's enough! He just misses his father and wants to protect his mother. I know you're still living in the shadow of losing Liam, but that doesn't give you the right to hurt other people!"

Chapter 3

I froze. "The shadow of losing Liam? He was my son. You don't deserve to be his father!"

Ivan was struck speechless. Meanwhile, Ingrid bowed her head to me.

"Please, just let us go," she pleaded. "Aaron and I can move far away. Just don't make this hard on Ivan. I never should have fallen in love with him, and I never should have had Aaron. It's all my fault he has to face this kind of judgment."

Ivan gazed at her, his eyes glistening with emotion. A thousand tiny needles seemed to prick at my heart.

Ingrid wiped her tears away. "I know you're a Sterling, that your family is powerful. I'm just an art student. I never wanted to compete with you. I just wanted to give Aaron a complete family."

She looked up at me, her expression one of pitiful begging. "Please, just let him go from this marriage?"

Aaron squirmed out of Ivan's arms and tugged on Ingrid's sleeve. "Mommy, stop begging her! The baby sister in your tummy says she's not feeling well. I'm a big brother now. I won't let her bully you or the baby!"

Ivan immediately rushed to Ingrid's side, anxiously checking on her. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw she was unharmed. "You're pregnant. You need to be careful."

"Didn't you say you broke off all contact?" I glared at him. "Where did this child come from? Or are you just so generous you're raising another man's baby?"

Ivan snatched his hand back from Ingrid's shoulder, his face a mask of guilt. "It wasn't her fault. I was drunk one night."

When he looked up again, his eyes held a bitter resentment. "You've been so cold these past four years. As a man, I have needs. This child… it just happened. And now I have to take responsibility."

I laughed, but tears streamed down my face. "So my refusing to sleep with you is the real problem here?"

He loosened his tie, avoiding my gaze. "If you had just accepted me back sooner, none of this would have happened."

My fists clenched. "Liam is dead because of your affair, and I'm supposed to just… what? Welcome you and that woman back with open arms? Raise your bastard child?"

After a long silence, he mumbled, "Liam's death had nothing to do with Ingrid or Aaron."

"So it was my fault?" I shot back. "My fault you cheated? If you resent me so much, why not just divorce me?"

Ingrid glanced up at him, a flicker of triumph in her eyes that she quickly hid. He just lowered his head, silent.

Aaron clung to Ivan's leg, sobbing. "Daddy, I want to go home! She's so mean. I don't like her. I just want to be with you and Mommy."

Ivan glanced at me, conflicted, then gently patted Aaron's head. "Go home with Mommy now. I'll come see you soon and bring your favorite toys."

Aaron hugged him tighter, refusing to let go. "I don't want toys! I want you and Mommy! You said I was your favorite in the whole world. Was that a lie?"

Ingrid looked pained as she gently tugged his arm. "Let's go, sweetie. Let's not bother them."

He shook her hand off, crying, "No! This is my daddy! Why are you trying to tear us apart?"

Ivan's fingers trembled as he bent down and hugged Aaron.

I wiped away a tear, my voice firm. "We're getting a divorce, Ivan. It's over."
