Chapter 1 of His Mistress Framed Me for Killing Her Baby

The rooftop was all white lights and champagne. I stood near a service door, watching waiters in black vests slide through the crowd with trays of caviar. My coat smelled like rain. My fingers were numb. I kept one hand in my pocket, crumpling the sonogram against the oncology referral, both pieces of paper damp from my sweating palm.

Judah was in the center of it all. He wore a navy suit with no tie. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows. He looked like he owned the sky. Around him, men in expensive watches laughed too loud and women in silk gowns touched his arm when they spoke. The ticker above the bar read ALVAREZ HOLDINGS - NYSE DEBUT - UP 34%. Everyone was celebrating.

I had practiced what I would say. I would pull him aside, show him the sonogram, tell him about the baby first. Then I would explain the rest. He would understand. He had to.

A woman's voice came through the sound system. The crowd turned toward the small stage near the glass railing. Sloane Turner stood there in a dress the color of champagne, one hand on the microphone, smiling like she was made of light. She said Judah's name. The room went quiet.

He walked toward her. I felt my stomach twist. It was the same feeling I got when the doctor said the word malignant. A coldness that started in my ribs and spread.

Sloane looked at him like he was the only person in the world. She said something about how proud she was. How far he had come. How she had always believed in him. Her voice was soft and breathy, the kind that made people lean in.

Then Judah went down on one knee.

The crowd gasped. Phones came out. Cameras flashed. I saw the ring, a diamond so big it caught every light on the rooftop. Sloane covered her mouth with both hands and nodded before he even finished asking. People clapped. Someone popped another bottle of champagne. The sound was like a gunshot.

I stood there with my hand in my pocket, holding two pieces of paper that suddenly felt like nothing.

Sloane pulled Judah to his feet and kissed him. The crowd cheered louder. A camera crew pushed forward. I saw a red recording light. This was going to be on the news. On every screen in the city.

I should have left. I should have turned around and walked back through the service door and disappeared. But I didn't. I stepped forward instead. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else.

I pushed through the crowd. A waiter almost dropped his tray. A woman in a fur stole gave me a dirty look. I kept walking until I was standing in front of Judah. He was still holding Sloane's hand. He looked at me and his face went blank.

"Judah," I said. My voice came out quieter than I wanted. "I need to talk to you."

Sloane turned. She looked at me like I was something stuck to her shoe. "Cleo," she said, very soft, very sweet. "This really isn't the time."

I ignored her. I pulled the sonogram out of my pocket. The paper was wrinkled and damp. I held it out toward Judah. "I'm pregnant," I said.

He didn't take it. He didn't even look at it. His jaw tightened. Around us, the crowd started to notice. Conversations stopped. Phones turned toward me.

"Are you serious right now?" Judah's voice was low, but it cut through everything. "You're doing this here?"

"I tried to tell you before," I said. "You wouldn't answer my calls."

Sloane made a small sound, like a whimper. She stepped back and pressed one hand to her chest. "Oh my God," she whispered. "Judah, she's—"

"I know exactly what she's doing." Judah's face was hard. He looked at me the way he looked at people across a boardroom table right before he destroyed them. "How much do you want?"

I stared at him. "What?"

"How much?" He said it louder this time. People were definitely listening now. Cameras were pointing at us. "Name your price. Whatever it takes for you to walk away and stop embarrassing yourself."

The words hit me like cold water. I couldn't breathe. "Judah, I'm not—"

"Security." He didn't let me finish. Two men in black suits appeared on either side of me. Judah looked at them, not at me. "Escort Ms. Morgan out. Use the service exit."

They each took one of my arms. I tried to pull away but they were too strong. The sonogram slipped from my hand and landed on the floor. No one picked it up.

"Judah, please," I said. My voice cracked. "Just listen—"

He turned his back. Sloane wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his chest. I heard her say something about how sorry she was that I ruined their night.

The security guards pulled me toward the service corridor. The crowd parted. I saw their faces. Some looked uncomfortable. Most looked disgusted. A woman whispered to her friend and they both laughed.

The last thing I saw before the door closed was Judah kissing Sloane again. The crowd clapped. Someone turned the music back on.

I was alone in a concrete stairwell that smelled like garbage. The guards let go of my arms and walked back inside. The door locked behind them.

I sat down on the steps. My phone buzzed. I pulled it out. The first headline was already up: DESPERATE WOMAN CRASHES ALVAREZ ENGAGEMENT. Below it was a photo of me. My face looked gray. My eyes looked empty. I looked like I was already dead.

I put the phone away. I pulled the oncology referral out of my pocket and unfolded it. Late-stage gastric adenocarcinoma. Immediate intervention required. Chemotherapy would start next week if I agreed.

Chemotherapy would kill the baby.

I sat there for a long time. Then I folded the paper back up, stood, and walked down the stairs into the rain.
