Chapter 2
Today was Saturday, and I didn't have work.
I stayed with my grandma until the evening when Bruce came.
Learning that my grandma had been in critical condition for two hours, Bruce pulled me out of the ward and yelled at me.
"Jane, Grandma's condition is so serious. Why didn't you tell me?"
His attitude was righteous as if he was questioning me.
"I couldn't even get through to you. How could I tell you?"
I slapped him with all my strength.
"Besides, do you care about it? You only have Flora in your heart!"
I had never been so angry before, let alone hit him.
During the seven years I was with him, I always remembered his goodness and tried to be as gentle and tolerant as possible.
Even though he was at fault first, I would blame everything on myself.
But this time, he touched my bottom line, and I couldn't control my emotions at all.
We were on the staircase, which was some distance away from my grandma's ward.
I vented the anger that I had been holding back. "You drove the car away, and there were no taxis at that time. It was raining heavily, and my grandma almost died!"
Bruce was stunned after being slapped by me.
He couldn't believe that I would do this to him.
Without realizing his mistake, he said, "Jane, what's wrong with you? I didn't expect this to happen. Flora wanted to jump off the building because of breaking up, and I just went to comfort her."
After speaking, he walked away with a sullen face.
I didn't chase after him to keep him.
I wondered, "Do I want to get married to him and live like this for the rest of my life?"
Our boss had been very concerned about the architectural design project recently.
Departments 1 and 2 were competing in following up on the project.
As the team manager of Department 1, I couldn't take leave.
Bruce ran a small bar and was usually free.
But I didn't ask him to take care of my grandmother. Instead, I hired a nurse.
The meeting lasted until eleven o'clock in the evening, and then I rushed to the hospital.
Grandma didn't sleep but was waiting for me.
She asked me if I had had a fight with Bruce and advised me to say something nice to him. She said that we were about to get married, that I shouldn't quarrel with Bruce because of her, and that a couple should accommodate each other.
My grandmother was concerned about my marriage. She had always had a good impression of Bruce, so she was afraid that we would break up.
"Grandma, I'll take care of it. Just have a good rest and don't think too much."
After that, I continued to work and came to visit my grandmother in the evening.
For half a month, I hadn't returned home or called Bruce.
In the past, if we had a conflict, within an hour, I would calm down, reflect on myself, and take the initiative to apologize to him.
But after what happened between him and Flora, I hesitated.
At night, I would still think of the good things Bruce had done for me over the years.
However, I knew he treated me well because Flora didn't come to him.
I didn't go back home after my grandma was discharged from the hospital but went to her house every day to take care of her.
"Jane, the doctor said that I'm recovering well. You should go back and stay with Bruce.
"Bruce is a good boy. He often comes to see me during the day, but he doesn't let me tell you. He likes to keep everything to himself.
"I don't know what's wrong with you lately. I'm worried. No matter what, you two are together for seven years."
My grandma noticed something and was worried that we would break up.
After all, when my parents divorced, my grandma and I were the ones who were hurt the most.
Therefore, my grandma didn't want us to break up.
Her words touched me deeply.
I recalled the past.
Bruce and I met on the first day of our freshman year.
He was very handsome, and many girls pursued him.
But he only loved Flora, who grew up with him.
However, Flora announced her relationship with Adam Colvin, a wealthy young man. The two of them were a perfect match that many people envied.
Therefore, I was able to get close to Bruce with my outstanding performance. I cared about him and often stayed with him.
Finally, one day, Bruce asked me if I wanted to be with him.
I was so excited that I cried with joy and nodded.
Since then, Bruce would often accompany me to the library and the cafeteria, and ask me to watch movies.
When I was sick, he would stay by my side and take care of me attentively.
He remembered our anniversaries and my birthday clearly and would prepare surprises for me.
Every Valentine's Day, he would place roses in the shape of the words "I love you" downstairs in my dormitory and sing love songs for me, which was very romantic.
I remembered all the goodness about Bruce.
Later, when he wanted to open a bar and was opposed by his family, I immediately used my savings to support him.
His parents looked down on my background and disliked me. They openly told me that they wouldn't let me spend a penny of their family and even made things difficult for me.
I accepted all of this because I loved Bruce, and he was the one I would live with.
I firmly believed that as long as we loved each other, we could solve all the problems.
Afraid that my grandmother would know about my grievances, I kept it a secret and worked hard, getting promoted and buying my car and house.
But I couldn't accept the fact that Bruce didn't keep distance from Flora.
This was my bottom line.
The night my grandma was in critical condition, I was very heartbroken.
But under my grandma's persuasion, I didn't want to make her worry, so I went back.
I slept in the guest room.
Bruce knocked on my door and said, "Jane, is Grandma feeling better?"
This was the first time he spoke to me in more than 20 days since our fight in the hospital.
In the past, I was always the one who took the initiative to speak to him, but this time it seemed that he compromised.
But I didn't respond to him.
I had been working very hard recently and had no time to deal with emotional matters, so I just went to sleep.
Chapter 3
The next morning, Bruce sat on the sofa.
He usually got up late.
There were dark circles under his eyes as if he hadn't slept all night.
Seeing me, he held my hand and said, "Jane, are you still angry? I'm sorry.
"That day you said Grandma's stomach disease recurred, and I thought it was okay to take some medicine. But at that time, Flora was heartbroken after breaking up..."
Before he could finish his words, I shook his hand away.
Flora.
He shouldn't have mentioned her in front of me.
I admitted I was jealous.
But more importantly, Bruce still didn't realize why he was wrong.
Being thrown away by me, Bruce showed an ugly face. "Jane, I've apologized. What else do you want?"
"I'm going to be late for work," I said.
The architectural design project was very important to me and my team. We worked day and night and put in a lot of effort, so we were determined to get it.
I just wanted to focus on my work.
"It's work again. All you have in mind is work."
Bruce angrily went into the bedroom and slammed the door.
I could tell his complaint about me, a workaholic.
I felt bitter in my heart.
He never understood. I had a mortgage and a car loan. If I was not strong enough, how could I live with him, who had lived a good life since childhood?
After a six-hour meeting, we finally won the project, and my boss praised me very much.
Everyone was tired at first, but when they heard the good news, they immediately became excited and wanted to go to KTV to have fun.
Everyone worked very hard, and we needed to relax.
When I went to the front desk to pay the bill, I found that someone wanted to add me as a friend.
It was Flora.
Her profile was a picture of roses in the shape of the words "I love you".
My brain suddenly went blank.
I thought Bruce's roses were only for me.
I never thought that Bruce also did this for Flora.
But I didn’t want to be pissed off so easily.
This time I was angry at Bruce because I was hurt by him. I just wanted to give us some time to calm down and think about our marriage.
I was not so impulsive to break up with him.
I accepted Flora's friend request and wanted to see what she was trying to do.
Back then, Bruce loved her so much that he got into a car accident and broke his leg for her. However, Flora was with another rich young man without even visiting Bruce. It was me who accompanied Bruce through that tough time.
Now Flora had broken up with her boyfriend. She called Bruce, who was already engaged to me, to stay with her, and she even added me and used that profile picture to irritate me.
There must be something wrong.
As soon as I accepted her friend request, I received a photo from her and one message: [Jane, how is the birthday present that Bruce gave me?]
The picture showed her wearing an expensive watch and holding a man's hand.
I was very familiar with that hand, which was Bruce's.
I had always dreamed of having this watch, but I had never been able to afford it due to financial pressure. Bruce knew it.
But now he bought it for Flora as a birthday present and was intimate with her.
My heart broke and shattered into pieces.
I used to deceive myself that Bruce just lost his mind for a moment and that he would forget Flora after reflecting on himself.
But now, I was disappointed in him.
I noticed the room in the photo seemed to be in the same KTV I was in.
I followed the waiter who was pushing the cake cart upstairs and came to a private room.
I heard people playing truth or dare inside.
Flora asked, "Bruce, who would you marry, Jane or me?"
Her question surprised everyone. Except for the waiter who pushed the cake in, everyone inside was curious and waiting for Bruce's answer.
I stood outside and saw that Bruce, who looked drunk, stared at Flora and said, "Of course I choose you."
I expected this answer and didn't have any feelings.
I walked in with no expression. "You can just get married right here."
Hearing my words, everyone looked at me in surprise.
