Chapter 3

Julian watched her walk away, her back ramrod straight, a perfect picture of professional composure. He raised a thumb to his still-stinging lip, the metallic taste of her defiance a lingering spark on his tongue.

He turned to his assistant, who had maintained an inconspicuous distance. “Inform the captain that I will be on this flight. In the front row of first class.”

"Sir?" The assistant's eyes widened slightly.

"Just do it," Julian said, his voice flat.

Meanwhile, Nora sought refuge in the sterile anonymity of the crew lounge. She stared at her reflection in the brightly lit mirror. Her lip was swollen where he'd crushed his mouth against hers, a faint purple bruise already forming. Her hands shook as she dabbed concealer over it, trying to erase the evidence of his assault.

For five years, this marriage had been a simple, cold transaction. A monthly deposit into her account in exchange for her name on a legal document that kept his family's matchmakers at bay. He was a ghost in her life, a headline in the financial news. She had convinced herself he felt nothing for her but disdain, a necessary tool he was forced to use. Today had proven her wrong. This wasn't disdain. It was something else, something possessive and cruel. A game, and he was changing the rules without warning.

She took a deep, steadying breath, pushing the turmoil down. She was Nora Vance, Purser. In command. She straightened her spine, the professional mask sliding perfectly back into place.

"Nora?" Her colleague, Amy Hayes, approached, her expression a careful blend of concern and insatiable curiosity. "Are you okay? I saw you... talking with Mr. Sinclair."

The loaded pause in Amy's question hung in the air. Before Nora could formulate a bland, corporate-approved reply, the lounge door swung open.

Julian Sinclair stood there, flanked by two senior vice presidents. His presence sucked all the air out of the room. The casual chatter died instantly. Every flight attendant, every pilot, every crew member turned to stare. And then, their gazes all shifted, as one, to Nora.

She felt the heat of their collective stare, a burning mixture of speculation, envy, and suspicion. She kept her face impassive, her posture perfect, betraying nothing.

Minutes later, they were boarding the crew shuttle to the aircraft. The bus was already crowded. Nora scanned for a seat, her stomach sinking as she saw the only one available.

It was next to Julian.

He looked up as if just noticing her standing there in the aisle, a damsel in distress. A faint, mocking smile touched his lips. "Ms. Vance," he said, his voice polite, formal, and carrying clearly through the silent bus. "Please." He gestured to the empty seat.

It was an order disguised as an invitation. Trapped by a dozen pairs of eyes, Nora had no choice. She walked the short, agonizing distance and sat down, keeping as much space between them as the narrow seat would allow. Her entire body was a tightly wound spring.

The moment she was seated, he turned away. He began a low, intense conversation with the VP on his other side about fuel hedging strategies. He didn't look at her. He didn't speak to her. It was as if she didn't exist.

But she did. She existed as the focal point of every whispered comment and sideways glance behind her. The short ride to the tarmac felt like an eternity, a claustrophobic journey in a rolling fishbowl. She had no idea what he was playing at, and the loss of control, the sheer unpredictability of it all, was a cold knot of dread in her stomach.

The shuttle hissed to a stop beside the gleaming fuselage of the A380. As the crew began to file out, Nora moved to stand, eager to escape.

Julian shifted, turning his body just enough to block her path in the narrow aisle.
