Chapter 1 of His Cheating Cost Him His Luna, His Heir, and His Empire

I was four moons into bearing my pup when my mate, Alpha Darius Ironclaw, brought another she-wolf across the threshold of our den. She was seven moons gone with hers.

"Selene, Vesper was Fenwick Greyhollow's mate. He's gone now, and she's got nothing. No pack, no bloodline, no hunting grounds to her name. The blood-oath says we shelter her. I owe Fenwick that much." He brushed the silver-burn scar on his right palm without seeming to know he'd done it. "Don't worry. It's only temporary. Once she's settled somewhere safe, she'll move on."

I was too soft-hearted to refuse. I never imagined "temporary" would stretch into two moons.

At first I thought little of it. Fenwick had taken a silver round meant for Darius in the Calabrese border-war. The old oath sworn under the Moon Goddess demanded that a blood-brother's widow be sheltered, fed, guarded. It was sacred. I understood. Not until the night I rose to use the washroom and stumbled onto a scene that froze the blood in my veins.

My mate. And his dead brother's widow. Tangled together by the window of the guest quarters, the curtains half-drawn, the den grounds dark and silent beyond the glass.

Every drop of blood in my body turned to ice.

I stood outside that door for three full hours. The corridor was cold, the stone floor pulling the heat from my bare feet until I couldn't feel them anymore. Down the passage, a pack warrior on the moonless rotation passed once, caught sight of me standing there, and looked away. He knew. Of course he knew. In a den like this the walls had ears and the warriors had eyes and noses keen enough to read every truth in the air, and every last one of them held their tongues because that was the law. Silence. Even when silence meant watching the Alpha's Luna stand barefoot in a freezing corridor while her mate rutted another she-wolf ten feet away.

In that time, they went at it three times.

And the scent. The scent was the thing that gutted me. Scorched oak and old copper threading through the door, tangled now with overripe jasmine and sugared honey, the two smells curdling into something that made my wolf draw back inside me and whine, low and broken, a sound I had never heard her make. Watching the shape of Darius's pleasure through the gap in the curtains, over and over, I felt my heart being carved open with a blade, one slow cut after another. Each sound through that door was precise and unhurried, and I catalogued every one of them the way a Beta-counsel catalogues debts. Not because I wanted to. Because my body wouldn't let me leave. My hands had gone to my belly at some point, cradling the pup growing there, and I stood like a she-wolf turned to stone in the corridor of her own den while the male who'd sworn a Moon-oath to protect me broke every vow that mattered.

He hadn't touched me since the pup quickened. Said he feared hurting it.

But Vesper was nine moons gone now, and that hadn't stopped them. Not once. Not twice. Three times.

When Darius finally finished, it was the gray hour before dawn. A thin light was creeping past the curtains, and somewhere beyond the den walls the first trade-wagons rumbled along the border road. The territory was stirring. Soon the kitchen-pack would start the morning meal. Soon the dawn detail would rotate in. Soon this den would fill with wolves who called my mate Alpha and bared their throats to him and pretended the dominion he'd built wasn't rotting from the inside.

Vesper wouldn't let him go. She stretched across the furs and purred, "Darius, you're magnificent. So much better than my late mate ever was. Thank you for giving me such an amazing experience."

"You're not bad yourself. Far more uninhibited than Selene."

A laugh scraped out of my throat before I could stop it. Bitter. Broken. It rang off the cold stone of the corridor, and the hush that followed was the kind that falls over a clearing when a wolf bares its teeth.

Darius's head snapped toward the doorway. Vesper gasped and yanked the furs over herself, and there it was: the practiced motion of her hand tucking a strand behind her left ear, slow and deliberate, as though she were composing herself for a portrait rather than covering what she'd done.

"Oh my, it's Selene Ashthorne! She must have gotten the wrong idea. Darius, hurry, go and explain things to her."

She used my bloodline name. Not Ironclaw. Ashthorne. As if I were a guest in my own den. As if the name I'd carried into this mating was the only one that still belonged to me.

Darius pulled on a robe and stepped out into the corridor. The overhead light caught the planes of his face, and for a moment he looked exactly like the male I'd taken as my mate seven years ago. The sharp jaw, the dark eyes, the way he carried himself as though the world owed him something and he meant to collect it. When he saw the tears streaked down my face, his brows drew together in a hard line. Not guilt. Irritation. The look of a male whose night has been inconvenienced.

"It's the middle of the night. Why aren't you in bed? What are you doing out here?"

I stared up at him, unable to believe the words coming out of his mouth. My voice shook. "That's my question to ask, not yours. Darius, I'm carrying your pup. And while I was sleeping, you were in there with another she-wolf. Have you no shame at all?"

The words came louder than I meant them to, and somewhere down the corridor a door closed softly. Another warrior, vanishing. Another witness choosing blindness. The den breathed around us, full of wolves who would kill on Darius's word, and not one of them would meet my eyes come morning.

"Selene, don't overthink this. Vesper's mate is dead. She's gone a long while without comfort. I was only helping her. It's perfectly natural, isn't it?" He gentled his tone the way he did when he wanted a pack-captain to swallow a bad bargain without tasting it. Measured. Warm. Utterly false. "Settle. There's nothing between us beyond this. You're my Luna. You always will be. Be good. Don't fret. It's bad for the pup."

"He's right, Selene." Vesper drifted out in her nightdress, her voice dripping sweetness, that cloying jasmine rolling ahead of her down the corridor. The light fell across her throat and collarbone, and the marks there were vivid, unmistakable. She came to stand beside my mate in the corridor of my own den as though she had been standing there for years. "Darius and I are only tending to a need of the body, that's all. I swear it won't touch your mating bond. As long as he's willing to look after me and my pup going forward, I'll be perfectly content."

She tilted her chin and smiled. "Truly. I would never try to take him from you. I know the one he truly loves is you."

The marks on her neck and chest burned into my sight like silver needles, the pain driving straight from my eyes down into the pit of my belly. I thought of the oath Darius had invoked to bring her here. The sacred obligation. The honor of the blood-brother bond, sworn to the Moon Goddess herself. And I thought of how easily sacred things could be hollowed out and worn as masks by those who had no use for them except as shields.

I looked at the two of them standing there, and I could not form a single word.

I hadn't known wolves like this existed. Whose sense of right and wrong was so thoroughly, spectacularly shattered. Who could invoke a dead male's name to excuse the betrayal of a living she-wolf and her unborn pup, and do it with steady voices and clear eyes, as though the world itself had rearranged to suit their version of things.

And somehow, these were the ones I'd ended up with. The Alpha I'd raised from nothing and the widow who'd slithered into the space I'd left unguarded. Standing shoulder to shoulder in the half-light of my own corridor, wearing matching looks of mild inconvenience, as if I were the intruder. As if I were the problem to be managed.

In that moment, the thought of bond rejection erupted in my mind like a flare.

Seven years mated, and I had never once let it surface. Years of quietly funneling the Ashthorne name, the Ashthorne alliances, the Moon Goddess's bloodline protection into the foundation of his pack, watching him rise from a low-born turned wolf to an Alpha whose throat every other Alpha bared at the border-tables of the coast. And not once, through all of it, had the thought of severing the bond crossed my mind. But the first time it came, it came with a force that nearly knocked me sideways.

No formal renouncement spoken aloud, not yet. In this world, dissolving a mating meant severing a pack alliance pact. It meant the Ashthorne Pack formally withdrawing its protection from the Ironclaw bloodline. Every alliance Darius believed he'd forged on his own, every stretch of hunting ground he held, every time an enemy pack had turned aside from his borders. All of it traced back to my blood. And the moment that protection was gone, every foe he'd ever made would scent the weakness within the hour.

The thought should have terrified me. Instead it settled into my chest like the first breath after drowning.

"Darius, I don't know who you are anymore." My voice was quiet, almost calm. The calm that falls over a clearing right before a command is given that cannot be called back. "I really don't. Not even a little. You feel like a complete stranger to me."

I smiled, cold and hollow, and took one step back. Then another. The stone was still freezing beneath my bare feet, but I couldn't feel it anymore. I couldn't feel anything except the slow, deliberate turn of my mating band beneath my thumb. Once. Twice.

Something flickered across Darius's face. Not guilt. Something nearer to alarm. The look of a male who has only now sensed that the ground beneath him might not be as solid as he believed. He reached for my arm. "Selene, don't be so petty. I was only helping her. My heart belongs to you alone."

I wrenched my arm free.

"Don't touch me. You're filthy."

The words hung in the corridor like the smoke after a silver round. Behind Darius, Vesper's hand drifted to her ear again, slow and deliberate, but I was already turning away. My mating band had gone still against my finger. The turning had stopped.

And in this bloodline, when the turning stopped, the decision had already been made.
