Chapter 1

My twin sister, Victoria, was feverishly obsessed with the glitz and power of high society, and she vowed to marry into a top-tier elite family.

She set her sights on the unofficial king of Veridia City—Zach Garcia, the heir to the Garcia Group. At the time, Zach was recuperating from an "accidental" car crash, so Victoria infiltrated his life as a temporary caregiver. However, she quickly grew bored with the tedious job and forced me to take her place.

She didn't know that the moment I discovered the star tattoo on the inside of Zach's wrist, a pattern only I could understand, our fates were already tightly intertwined.

1

My twin sister, Victoria, was obsessed with the lavish life of a socialite. Her singular ambition was to marry into a top-tier family and lead a life of glittering excess.

She set her sights on Zach Garcia, the heir to the global Garcia Group in Veridia City, who was recovering from a car crash arranged by a business rival. Posing as a temporary caregiver, she managed to worm her way into his life.

But she soon grew bored with the charade and forced me to take her place.

When Zach finally recovered and hosted a grand charity gala, Victoria decided to drug him with a powerful psychoactive substance to secure her position as the next Mrs. Garcia.

This time, I didn't stop her. I even confirmed the location of the top-floor suite for her, making her plan that much easier.

In my past life, I had pleaded with Victoria, warning her that high society wasn't a romance novel. A man like Zach was a ruthless tycoon—not someone to be trifled with. To my surprise, she'd actually listened and called off her plan.

But soon, news broke that Zach was engaged to another socialite. Just like that, Victoria's grand fantasy shattered.

She blamed me for ruining her "dream." My parents blamed me, too. They hit me. They cursed me. They insisted it was my fault Victoria had failed to marry Zach.

One rainy night, Victoria had a complete breakdown. In the middle of a heated argument, she sent me plunging from the second-floor balcony.

Now, I had a second chance. I’d woken up on the night of Zach's charity gala.

"Now that he's recovered, you don't have to pretend to be me anymore."

My twin sister, Victoria Davenport, stood before me with a twisted smile. She dangled a small vial in her hand like a rare treasure. "This stuff works wonders. It cost me a fortune, but one drop in his drink, and I'll be the next Mrs. Garcia!"

Her expression was triumphant as she fantasized about seducing the Garcia family's feared "fixer"—Zach Garcia—and reigning over the city's business empire as his wife.

I remained calm, unlike in my past life, making no attempt to talk her out of it.

"Alright," I said flatly. "Good luck."

But Victoria wasn't about to let me off that easily. She seized my arm, leaned in close, and lowered her voice.

Chapter 2

"Don't forget, you're the one who spent weeks playing me, taking care of him. You know his routines. I need you by my side until this is done."

Then she tossed me a wide-brimmed hat and a pair of sunglasses. "Cover your face. If anyone figures this out and ruins my plan, you'll regret it."

I just offered a faint smile. "Got it."

In the weeks I’d spent as Zach's caregiver, there was one thing I was certain of: he was no spoiled, simple-minded heir.

As the Garcia family's "fixer," he was shrewd and ruthless. Victoria thought she could outsmart him, but she was just digging her own grave.

And I wasn't about to stop her.

Victoria strode confidently toward him, holding the drugged glass of whiskey she'd prepared.

Zach drank it without a second thought. Within minutes, an unnatural flush crept up his handsome face, and his body began to sway.

Victoria, playing the part of his caregiver once more, rushed to support him and guide him toward the elevator.

On the way, I slipped a spare key card for the top-floor suite into her hand. "Got you a spare."

Her eyes lit up. "See? You're not completely useless after all."

"Once I’m officially with him, I'll introduce you to some Wall Street type or a company director. That should set you up for life."

"Stand guard outside. Don't let anyone ruin my big moment. If this gets screwed up, I promise I'll make your life a living hell."

I didn't argue. I just followed them upstairs and quietly positioned myself at the entrance to the fire escape, not directly in front of their door.

A few minutes later, a muffled thud echoed from inside the suite.

Then the door was flung open, and Zach staggered out.

Chapter 3

Zach's breathing was ragged, his face contorted with fury. He looked like a cornered panther, poised to strike.

Victoria was collapsed on the carpet, unconscious, a bleeding gash on her forehead.

I knew it. I knew she would never succeed.

For now, it was just a taste of his anger. But once Zach sobered up, I knew she would be utterly ruined.

I let out a slow breath, about to slip away, when a hand like an iron vise clamped down on my wrist.

The next second, Zach was dragging me into the presidential suite next door.

I was still wearing my sunglasses, but even through the dark lenses, I felt his searing gaze lock onto mine.

The hotel lights were dim, casting long shadows across the walls. He pinned me against the wall, his voice low and hoarse, thick with the drug's heat.

"Your scent… citrus and cedar… it’s so damn familiar. Who are you?"

Even in the fog of the drug, there seemed to be a hint of… longing in his voice. As if he was trying to solve a puzzle that had plagued him for years.

I froze. There was no way I could answer. We had spent weeks together—if I spoke, he would recognize me instantly.

I couldn't let anything happen between us. If it did, I'd end up just like Victoria.

I struggled to break free, but even drugged, Zach’s strength was unyielding, holding me fast. I didn't stand a chance.

I opened my mouth to scream, but he suddenly leaned down, his hot breath fanning my ear as he whispered, "Your eyes… they're so beautiful…"

His trembling fingers traced my cheek, his touch surprisingly gentle for a moment.

"I've been dreaming of eyes like these," he murmured, more to himself than to me. "But that's impossible… isn't it?"

I went rigid. For a split second, I thought he knew.

Then, he ripped off my sunglasses and kissed me with an almost punitive force.

Panic surged through me. I quickly slapped the light switch, plunging the room into darkness, but after that, there was no escape.

The next few hours were a blur of darkness and pain. It wasn't until deep into the night that Zach's crushing grip finally loosened, his strength fading.

In the darkness, just before he lost consciousness, I heard him whisper something that made my heart stop: "Don't leave me… please…"

His voice was so vulnerable, so different from the cold, feared heir everyone knew, that for a moment I almost reached out to comfort him. But I caught myself just in time.

Every part of my body screamed in pain, but I forced myself to get up and get dressed.

I wasn't Victoria, living in some delusion where a ruthless tycoon falls for a naive girl. I wouldn't let myself be trapped in her mess.

So while he slept, I slipped out of the room. I didn’t hesitate or look back, forcing myself to pretend none of it had ever happened.
