Chapter 4
Half an hour later, Luna sat in a cab, her eyes fixed on the pink Mercedes G-Class not far away.
Simon opened the sunroof, and within a minute, the pink G-Class started rocking rapidly.
A crowd began gathering nearby, some stopping to gawk, exclaiming in astonishment, "Wow, making out outdoors. How exciting."
"Tsk, tsk, rich people sure know how to have fun—lakeside, a G-Class, and a beautiful woman. It's going to be one heck of a night."
Luna's eyes reddened as she stared at the swaying vehicle. Her entire body felt cold to the bone. Hands trembling, she recorded a five-minute video.
Afterward, she sent the video to Susanna with a raspy voice note. "Play this during the wedding."
Once the message was sent, Luna dialed Maple Morgan, her mother.
"Mom, I'll come to Naavi in seven days to see you and Dad."
On the other end of the line, Maple sensed the slight quiver in Luna's voice and immediately frowned. "Is Simon coming with you?" she asked.
"I'm coming back alone," Luna replied.
"Alright, don't be upset," Maple said, her tone grim. She had a rough idea of what had happened, so she reassured her daughter, "I'll pick you up from the airport."
Late into the night, Simon returned home noisily, waking the sleeping Luna. Reeking of alcohol, he stumbled over to her, cupping her face in his hands as he began kissing her.
Perhaps uneasy over Luna's earlier outburst, he murmured drunkenly, "Darling, I love you so much. You can yell at me, curse me, even hit me, but don't ever leave me, okay? Baby, don't worry. I'll never cheat on you."
Luna, on the spacious bed, coldly stared at Simon.
Simon had clearly drunk too much last night. He even returned home without wiping the red lipstick marks on his neck.
Yet the love in his eyes seemed so genuine, without a hint of deceit.
The next morning, Luna woke up groggily to find that Simon had squeezed toothpaste onto her toothbrush, prepared warm mouthwash, and even laid out an outfit for her.
Once Luna was ready, Simon accompanied her downstairs.
Simon's phone at the breakfast table buzzed soon. He glanced at the message and then looked at Luna apologetically. "Lulu, I won't be home tonight. There's a gathering."
Luna paused mid-bite of her waffle. She knew very well that Simon was planning to spend the evening with Sophie, but she couldn't even muster the energy to expose him.
"Alright."
After Simon left, Luna hailed a cab and quietly followed him.
20 minutes later, Simon drove into a well-maintained residential area.
Sophie, dressed in an elegant white Chanel-inspired outfit and a matching scarf, looked stunning and refined.
When she spotted Simon's Bentley from a distance, she waved excitedly before running over to get into the car.
The two stayed in the car for a while, likely caught up in their intimate activities before Simon drove out of the neighborhood.
Half an hour later, the black Bentley stopped in front of a wedding photography studio.
Sophie stepped out from the passenger seat. As Simon joined her, she affectionately looped her arm through his, and they walked inside together.
A staff member at the entrance greeted them warmly. "Mr. Fulmer and Ms. Sutherland, welcome! We've cleared the studio for you. Let me show you the styles of wedding photos we'll be shooting today."
Luna sat expressionlessly inside the cab as she watched the scene unfold. A chilling numbness washed over her.
Her phone suddenly rang then.
She glanced at the caller ID—it was her best friend, Clover Lambert.
Swiping to answer, Luna held the phone to her ear.
Clover's cheerful voice quickly filled the line. "Lulu, where are you? Let's grab afternoon tea."
Luna directly gave Clover the address of the wedding photography studio.
On the other end, Clover went silent for a few seconds, then let out a dramatic wail. "You've been married to Simon for five years, and yet, you're taking wedding photos again now! My goodness, look at you two getting more in love as time goes by. Ugh, you're killing this single lady here with envy."
Luna seemed slightly out of it as she replied bitterly, "Clover, he's not taking wedding photos with me."
Clover was stunned for a few seconds before realizing something was wrong. "With another woman? Simon cheated? That's impossible! Hold on, I'll be there in 20 minutes!"
20 minutes later, Luna got into Clover's car.
As Clover anxiously questioned her, Luna explained how Simon had cheated on her with Sophie after Sophie's return to the country.
Then, she played a provocative voice message that Sophie had sent from Simon's phone a month ago. Pointing at the bridal shop, Luna smiled bitterly.
"Clover, as you can see, it's Sophie's birthday today. Simon brought her here to take some wedding photos."
Clover followed Luna's gaze.
Inside the bridal shop, Simon had his head down as he adjusted the neckline of Sophie's wedding gown. His expression was gentle, and his movements were cautious. It was as if he were handling a delicate piece of art.
"I can't take this anymore." Clover's eyebrows pulled together into a deep frown. "I'm going in there to beat them up and avenge you!"
Clover had a fiery temper. She rolled up her sleeves, ready to storm into the shop.
However, Luna stopped her.
"Wait, I want to see what they'll do next."
Half an hour later, Simon and Sophie walked out of the bridal shop.
One was dressed in a sharp black suit, the other in a white fitted wedding gown. Hand in hand, they got into a Bentley.
After some time, they arrived at a lakeside.
The wedding photo shoot area had been cordoned off in advance to prevent any potential paparazzi.
When the two arrived, the photographer, who was already waiting, flattered them with a big smile. "Mr. Fulmer and Ms. Sutherland, you are such a perfect match. You're the most attractive couple I've ever photographed."
Sophie said with a playful smile as she held Simon's arm. "Well, I've got an eye for men. It's true that my husband is dashing."
Over the next half-hour, the two changed into three different sets of suits and wedding dresses.
With the winter temperature on the colder side, Simon thoughtfully picked up a thick shawl during breaks in the shoot and draped it over Sophie's shoulders.
Whenever Sophie struggled to find the right mood for the photos, Simon would coax and encourage her until she naturally eased into the right mood.
After the shoot was completed, Simon didn't rush to leave. Instead, he suddenly got down on one knee.
Under Sophie's surprised gaze, he brought out a bouquet of roses and an engagement ring he had prepared long ago.
"When you mentioned that you wanted to take wedding photos, I always felt we should have a proper proposal ceremony. You've been so understanding, constantly reassuring me that there's no need for a proposal.
"But I can't let you settle for less. Sophie, will you marry me?"
Chapter 5
Sophie's eyes turned red with emotion as she nodded excitedly. "Yes! I'll marry you! I'll marry you a hundred times!"
The surrounding camera crew immediately erupted into cheers. "Congratulations!"
Inside the car, Luna watched the scene unfold with a cold expression, her entire body numb.
When Simon proposed to her five years ago, he was just as heartfelt.
He had worn a sharp black suit, held a bouquet of vibrant roses, and presented her with a meticulously prepared engagement ring.
Back then, he even choked up while proposing.
"Lulu, you're the only woman I'll ever love in this lifetime. There will be no other women in my heart. I beg you, please marry me. I swear, I'll end myself if I ever cheat."
Luna let out a bitter laugh until tears started to fall suddenly.
It turned out everything was a lie. The promises, too, were lies.
Even his so-called sincerity was fleeting and ever-changing.
Looking at Luna with concern, Clover gently asked, "They've left. Should we follow them?"
"Let's go," Luna said, lowering her gaze and slowly turning to look out the window.
She wanted to see where Simon and Sophie were heading next.
The Bentley pulled up in front of a Westonian restaurant an hour later.
The restaurant was located in the most bustling part of the city and had window-side seating that was notoriously difficult to reserve.
Since it wasn't mealtime, there were only a few diners.
Each table in the restaurant was separated by screens, providing privacy.
It was clear that Simon had taken great precautions.
Seeing Simon and Sophie walk into the restaurant, Luna first went to the shop next door and bought a more mature-looking outfit. After donning a mask and a large hat, she slowly made her way into the restaurant.
Clover had already taken care of everything by paying to secure the table behind Simon's.
As the two of them sat down, a middle-aged couple, guided by a waiter, was seated at Simon's table.
The couple appeared to be in their 50s and looked like ordinary people. On closer inspection, however, the middle-aged woman bore a 50% resemblance to Sophie.
"Don't tell me Simon is meeting Sophie's parents!" Clover exclaimed in surprise.
Luna remained expressionless as she took out her phone. Finding the perfect angle, she quickly snapped a few photos through the gap in the screen.
Her timing was impeccable; she captured the moment Simon handed a black card to Sophie's mother.
"This scumbag sure knows how to spend big," Clover muttered angrily.
Luna's tear-filled eyes lowered slightly as she slowly put down her phone.
She recalled how Simon had also presented an unlimited black card to show his sincerity when he met her parents for the first time years ago. But her parents had firmly refused—they didn't want to "sell" their daughter.
Now, the same move was being repeated.
"Let's go," Luna stated. She didn't want to stay there for even one more second.
The two made their way down to the first floor.
Clover offered to take Luna home, but Luna shook her head.
"Clover, my mind's a mess right now. I just want to be alone for a while."
Hearing that, Clover didn't push further but repeatedly reminded her to stay safe before leaving.
After Clover left, Luna wandered the streets alone. The outdoor temperature had dropped to 30.2°F.
Luna was wearing only a thin coat. However, the chill on her body was nothing compared to the cold in her heart.
She didn't know how long she had been walking when her phone suddenly vibrated.
It was a message from Simon.
As Luna opened the message, three wedding photos immediately appeared on her phone screen.
One showed Sophie leaning against Simon, the two of them looking intimate.
The second was of them sharing a sweet kiss in each other's arms.
The third captured Simon on one knee, holding a bouquet, while Sophie beamed unreservedly.
"Today, we took our wedding photos, and he publicly proposed to me. I was really touched. He even asked to meet my parents. Aside from getting the marriage certificate, we've gone through all the steps necessary to have a wedding.
"Who says it's bad to share a man? I can accept it—can you? After all, I'm not the one losing out."
Luna stared at Sophie's arrogant words, but she didn't reply.
Instead, she forwarded the three wedding photos along with the pictures she had taken earlier of Simon's dinner with Sophie's parents to Susanna. She also attached screenshots of all their chat records.
"Make sure all of this is revealed on the wedding day," she instructed.
After that, Luna slid her phone back into her pocket. She continued walking aimlessly, her steps heavy and lifeless.
She didn't notice the out-of-control black car speeding toward her.
Bang!
Luna didn't have time to get out of the way. She was sent flying nearly seven feet away.
It felt like an eternity before she opened her eyes again. The sharp smell of disinfectant hit her nose, and her vision was filled with the sterile white of a hospital room.
Simon, noticing she was awake, hurried to her bedside. His dark eyes were filled with worry and lingering fear.
"You're awake! Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?" he asked, his voice tight with concern.
Luna's gaze shifted slowly, finally landing on Simon.
Simon's eyes were red as he looked at her with a mix of nervousness and deep sorrow, as though he wished he could have taken her place and been the one injured.
Yet all Luna felt was a wave of nausea. The images of Simon and Sophie's intimate wedding photos flashed in her mind, and her stomach churned violently.
"Simon, oh Simon…" she thought. "Which version of you is the real one?"
"Why aren't you saying anything? Are you in pain? I'll get the doctor," Simon blurted out anxiously, turning to leave.
But before he could go, Luna grabbed his hand.
Her voice was hoarse as she asked, "Why are you here?"
Chapter 6
Simon was slightly taken aback. When he received the call from the hospital, he had been dining with Sophie's parents.
At the time, he was so overcome with fear that he immediately left Sophie's family behind to rush to the hospital.
Thankfully, Luna hadn't suffered any major injuries.
"I was out having dinner with some clients. There's an important deal I need to follow up on. I came over right away when the hospital informed me about your accident," he explained.
Luna's soft eyes narrowed slightly as she stared straight at him.
"You just came from a dinner with your clients?" she asked.
"Yeah, Lulu. I'm so tired." Simon massaged his temples.
Hearing that, Luna slowly closed her eyes and said nothing more.
Simon sat by her side to keep her company. After a while, his phone suddenly rang. He decisively declined the call, only to have the caller persistently call again.
Simon muted his phone and began typing a message with his head lowered.
A minute later, his expression became animated. He hastily made up an excuse and left in a hurry.
Not long after Simon had left, Clover arrived to visit Luna. However, her expression was anything but cheerful.
"Guess who I ran into on my way upstairs," she huffed.
Seeing Clover, Luna sat up slightly and thought for a few seconds before venturing a guess. "Simon?"
Clover scoffed and put on an expression full of disdain.
"The third floor of this hospital is the obstetrics and gynecology department. When I got in the elevator to come up, I saw Simon with Sophie as soon as the doors opened.
"I felt something was off, so I followed the crowd out of the elevator, only to see Sophie holding a prenatal checkup report. Simon was practically grinning from ear to ear, murmuring about how he's going to be a dad."
Luna froze slightly, her gaze lowered thoughtfully. There was not a trace of displeasure on her face.
"She's pregnant, huh?" she remarked softly.
Clover couldn't help but feel that Luna was acting unlike herself, though she couldn't pinpoint exactly what felt off. She leaned closer to Luna and touched her forehead.
"Are you not angry? Wait, you don't have a fever that's messed up your brain, right?"
Luna gave a faint smile, her pale lips slightly parted as she spoke. "News flash—Simon has a medical condition. The doctor said he can't reproduce."
Three years ago, they had tried for a baby for an entire year, but she couldn't get pregnant. She initially thought the issue was with her and even scheduled a hospital appointment for a checkup.
Worried about the stress it might place on her, Simon also went with her to get checked.
When the results came back, it was revealed that Simon was infertile.
Luna couldn't sleep that night. She spent the whole night convincing herself to accept the idea of a childless life. She was fine as long as Simon loved her.
To protect Simon's ego and career, she had even asked the doctor, Eason Hilt, to keep Simon's condition a secret, claiming publicly that she needed to "fix her health" before they could conceive.
But now, she felt her three years of careful secrecy was utterly foolish after she knew how thrilled Simon was to become a father.
"Holy shit, now that's what I call news!" Clover was so shocked she nearly jumped out of her seat. Rubbing her hands together, she wiggled her eyebrows and suggested, "Lulu, I've got an idea. You're moving to Naavi in five days, right? Let's pretend we don't know anything for now. Once Sophie gives birth, we'll send Simon his medical report. I'd love to see whether he'll lose his mind when he finds out!"
Simon didn't show up at the hospital the next morning.
In the afternoon, Susanna came to Luna's ward. After reporting on the wedding preparations, she hesitatingly glanced at Luna.
"Say what's on your mind," Luna mentioned, her sleek brows furrowed slightly.
Susanna nervously glanced at Luna and whispered, "Mr. Fulmer asked me to deliver some documents to the villa this afternoon. When I arrived, I saw Sophie Sutherland sitting on the living room couch in her pajamas.
"Mrs. Fulmer, you've always been kind to me; I just couldn't stand by and say nothing. I thought I should let you know."
A chill crept up from the soles of Luna's feet, and her delicate face turned cold.
It seemed that Sophie had already moved into their home while Luna was still hospitalized. No wonder Simon had specifically told her last night to inform him before she was discharged so that he could pick her up.
"I understand. Thank you."
Luna picked up her phone from the table and opened the surveillance footage, which was completely dark.
Simon had deliberately covered the surveillance camera in advance.
With a frown, Luna turned to Susanna, who had not yet left.
"I'll find a way to get Simon and Sophie out of the villa tonight. Please get someone to reinstall the camera. Make sure it's discreet."
"Understood, Mrs. Fulmer," Susanna replied.
At 10:00 pm, Simon arrived at the hospital. He looked at Luna lying on the hospital bed, his dark eyes filled with guilt.
"Lulu, did you ask me to come because you missed me? I'm sorry, I was busy all day—"
Luna frowned, cutting him off and offering him an excuse to avoid putting him in a tough spot. "I know. You were busy preparing for my birthday party, which is why you're visiting so late."
Simon was momentarily stunned but then smiled as he took Luna's hand and gently squeezed it.
"As expected of you, Lulu. You know me best."
Luna fixed her gaze on Simon and agreed, "Yes, I do understand you. I understand everything you do."
Simon's heart skipped a beat, and he mumbled, "Lulu…"
Just as he was about to say something, a nurse came in with a cart to replace Luna's IV.
The next day, Luna opened the surveillance footage and saw Sophie and Simon having lunch together in the villa.
Sophie sat in Luna's usual spot, pouting and refusing to eat. She claimed her pregnancy had caused her to lose her appetite.
"Be good and take care of yourself." Simon patiently spoon-fed her. "Once the baby is born, I'll figure out a way to have Lulu accept our child as her godchild."
Half an hour later, Sophie had eaten too much. She waddled upstairs with a smug expression, her belly protruding.
Simon called the house staff over and spoke to them in a low, commanding tone. "Sophie is pregnant and has a short temper. Be patient with her. Also, none of you are to mention her moving in here to Lulu when Lulu comes back!"
"Yes, Mr. Fulmer," the staff responded.
Luna watched the surveillance footage calmly.
Then, she looked away and began instructing Susanna to prepare the wedding invitations. She intended to finalize the guest list for the invitations today.
