Chapter 1

During my dad's funeral procession, the hearse grinds to a halt when a wedding convoy blocks its way. I get out of my car and try to negotiate with the groom, only for him to grab a brick and smash it right into my head.

"Who the hell do you think you are for blocking my way? Do you have any idea who I'm marrying?"

In fact, the groom has the nerve to stomp down on the gas pedal and crash into the hearse, sending it—and my dad's body—flipping over the road.

"What do you mean 'respect the dead'? As if! My wife is the chairwoman of Nexora Group! You should be honored that you get to make way for her!"

But the thing is, Nexora Group is my family's company.

I turn to look at the bride depicted on the wedding banner. That woman is Josephine Thornton, my wife who's supposed to be on an overseas business trip right now!

So, I place a phone call and have Josephine dismissed from her job.

This time, I'd like to see what Josephine and her new "husband" can do to make it up to my dad, a national hero who devoted his life to the country!

As soon as the call ended, I heard shouts behind me.

Jonathan Larson suddenly floored it, ramming into the hearse carrying Dad's body. Seeing its front all dented and half of it about to fall into the river, I hurried over frantically to stop him.

The next moment, the car slammed into me, sending me crashing to the ground. My right leg was in so much pain that I couldn't even move.

With a cigarette between his teeth, Jonathan got out of the car and arrogantly flicked ash into my face. "If you know what's good for you, get out of my way. Otherwise, next time, it won't just be your leg!"

I glared at Jonathan. "Do you know whose body is in this hearse? If anything happens, you won't be able to handle the consequences!"

Dad dedicated decades of his life to national scientific research. Not long ago, he even led the development of a rocket artillery system capable of taking out targets anywhere in the world.

If Dad hadn't died in an accident while helping others, he would now be receiving honors at the national hall. For that reason, the leaders gave special approval for his body to be placed at the National Memorial Hall.

I came back this time just to escort Dad's body. However, I didn't expect roadwork nearby, so the road was reduced to a single lane.

Initially, I didn't want to hold up the bride and groom, so I got out of the car earlier to talk things through and let them pass. I didn't expect them to be so unreasonable.

Before I could even tell Jonathan who my dad was, he had already stepped on the back of my hand, smiling smugly.

"He's just some dead old man, right? Let me tell you. The bride in the wedding limo behind us is the chairwoman of Nexora Group. Even if the king were here, he'd have to give way!"

His groomsmen spat at me too. "Jonathan, I bet this guy's trying to scam us out of our money. We should just hand him over to the police and let him rot in jail for life!"

I struggled to push myself up from the ground as my eyes swept over the wedding banner behind them.

I froze in shock. The bride was actually my wife, Josephine Thompson, who was supposed to be abroad on a business trip.

Last night, she even called me, saying she was overseas and couldn't make it back for my dad's funeral. I had been understanding, thinking she was tied up with company matters. I never imagined she would marry another man behind my back.

And yet these guys were still acting smug, holding up their phones and threatening to call the police.

I stared at the wedding limo behind them and asked coldly, "Is your wife Josephine Thompson, the chairwoman of Nexora Group? Tell her to get out of the car. I want to see her!"

Jonathan froze before bursting into laughter. "Who do you think you are? You really think you can see my wife whenever you want?"

I didn't bother arguing with him and went straight for the wedding limo.

In the past, Josephine kept telling me that women could have careers too. I didn't want her to burn herself out, so I handed Nexora Group to her and stepped out of the spotlight.

I never expected Josephine to use the position I gave her to boss people around out there.

I had only taken a couple of steps when someone struck the back of my head with an iron rod. My vision went black, and I collapsed into a heap on the ground, warm blood trickling down my forehead.

Jonathan waved the iron rod he had taken from the car and swaggered over to me.

"Bastard, are you trying to take my bride away? If I don't teach you a lesson today, you won't know who's really in charge in Kova!"

With that, he signaled to his groomsmen to pin me down on the ground from both sides.

I gritted my teeth and tried to fight back, but there were too many of them. I watched Jonathan raise the iron rod high. He was about to bring it down on my head when I heard a familiar voice ring out.

"What are you doing? Stop that!"

Chapter 2

Still in her wedding dress, Josephine hopped out of the car. When she saw me, shock flashed across her face.

"Sebastian? What are you doing here?"

Before I could even say anything, Jonathan played the victim and started complaining. "Josephine, this brat deliberately got in our way to make us late for our own wedding.

"He even looked down on me. You can't let him get away with that!"

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and looked at them coldly.

"Is this your so-called business trip abroad? You couldn't make it to my dad's funeral, huh? Josephine, how dare you marry another man behind my back? What, am I dead to you or something?"

Josephine looked taken aback for a moment, guilt flickering across her face.

The crowd around us started gossiping. "Who's this man to Ms. Thompson?"

"I once heard she only became chairwoman because she had a secret backer. Could it be him?"

The next moment, Josephine slapped me hard across the face.

"Haven't you had enough, Sebastian? I already rejected you, remember? Are you seriously going to keep pestering me on my wedding day?"

What? Keep pestering her?

I froze in disbelief. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined she would say that to me.

Beside her, Jonathan suddenly seemed to realize something and rushed at me to hit me. "So you're the pathetic loser who's been harassing Josephine, huh?

"You've been bothering my wife over and over. I let it go before, but not today. I'm going to teach you a lesson!"

I seized Jonathan's arm and sent him flying over my shoulder. I then raised my hand, revealing the wedding ring on my ring finger.

"Josephine, I'm giving you one last chance. Who's your real husband?"

Everyone erupted into chaos when they saw the same wedding ring on her finger.

"So he really is Josephine's husband! Come on. She's the chairwoman of Nexora Group. I can't believe she's cheating on him!"

Someone even pulled out their phone to go live.

Josephine's eyes flickered at that. She interlaced her fingers with Jonathan and spoke with conviction.

"Jonathan is my only husband, and I really love him. That's why I chose to marry him today. I don't know how you got hold of my wedding ring to make a custom-made replica. That's gross!"

The crowd's insults grew louder and more intense by the second.

I saw Josephine turn to gently comfort Jonathan. I had never seen her look at anyone with such affection before. She had no qualms about twisting the facts just to protect him, making me a public target.

I bit my tongue until it bled, but I still shouted, "No! Josephine and I are legally married!"

With that, I pulled out my phone and started scrolling, trying to find our marriage certificate and wedding photos.

But at that moment, Jonathan pulled a copy of a marriage certificate from his inner suit pocket and threw it in my face.

"Bastard, take a good look. My wife and I just got our marriage registered. As for your certificate, it doesn't even have the official stamp.

"You've got some nerve, using that as evidence. I think you should go see a shrink and get your brain checked!"

My hands shook as I reached for the marriage certificate. When I saw both their names and the official stamp on it, I felt like I had been struck by lightning.

Chapter 3

Back then, Josephine was still mourning a family member and didn't want a lavish wedding. So we only invited a few close friends to dinner.

As for the marriage certificate, we got it done in a hurry too. Josephine said it was a symbol of our love story, so she wanted to keep it safely tucked away. She barely even let me take another look at it.

I thought Josephine truly cared about me too. The truth was, she was afraid I would notice the cracks in her story.

Josephine had looked on as I basked in the happiness of our newlywed life, believing she was entitled to all the privileges of being my wife.

But behind my back, she actually gave them all to another man.

Seeing me silent, Jonathan snatched the copy of the marriage certificate from my hands, smiling maliciously.

"Do you get it now? You know who her real husband is, don't you? Who do you think you are? Think you can steal my woman from me?"

I ignored Jonathan's taunt and stared expressionlessly at the woman standing behind him.

"Josephine, don't forget this. I'm the one who gave you all of this. I can always take it back." With that, I turned to leave and pulled my phone out to call my lawyer.

I hadn't gotten far when Jonathan ran up behind me and kicked me in the back. I was caught completely off guard and fell forward onto the ground.

"You ruined our wedding day, and now you're leaving? Don't even think about it!"

As soon as Jonathan finished speaking, his groomsmen immediately seized me and tied me to a tree next to the road. They kept shouting about getting justice for him.

"Brat, you could've walked away earlier, but you insisted on digging your own grave!"

The men started punching and kicking me. They even used their phones to take pictures of how pathetic I looked.

A metallic taste filled my mouth as I turned my head away to avoid the cameras. I gritted my teeth, saying, "Let me go. Otherwise, you'll regret it!"

But everyone simply burst out laughing at my words.

"Regret it? Ha! I'm going to knock all your teeth out today!"

"You like harassing women, don't you? I'm going to break your legs. Let's see if you've still got the guts to harass them after this!"

Jonathan raised his iron rod high. He was about to bring it down onto my head when Josephine suddenly shouted for him to stop.

She walked over to me expressionlessly. "Today is my wedding day, so I'll let this go. As long as you apologize to Jonathan, I'll drop this."

I knew Josephine was worried things would escalate and get out of hand.

But at this point, there was no way I would ever drop this. I spat in her face, hating that my hands were bound and that I couldn't strangle her on the spot.

"You want me to apologize to him? Over my dead body!"

With that, I looked at the hearse behind us and yelled, "You're the ones who don't get it! Josephine, do you know what happens when you get in the way of a national hero's funeral procession?"
