Chapter 1 of He Smeared His Campaign Wife on Live TV

For eighteen years, I made Julian Ashcroft look like the husband Britain could trust.

I wrote 312 speeches, laid out Sunday breakfast before the cameras arrived, and tucked ginger biscuits into our son's bag.

When Julian first ran for office, he kissed my ink-stained fingers and promised every victory would be half mine.

By election eleven, voters called us the perfect family.

That morning, I fixed his navy tie while Chloe Mercer wore the cashmere coat I had lent her.

I found my son's old brass school badge inside Chloe's pocket and understood where she had spent the night.

I still loaded Julian's final talking points onto the studio monitor.

Then father and son sat beneath our family photograph and looked straight into the camera.

“Evelyn has struggled with her mental health for years,” Julian said.

“Mum and Dad have lived separately for eighteen months,” Oliver added.

“We kept quiet to protect her.”

“Now we have to protect the voters from her instability.”

"You're overthinking the closing remarks, Evelyn." Julian slammed his ceramic mug onto the final page of my victory speech.

"Julian, lift the cup," I said, keeping my tone even.

"It's fine. The voters just want to see my teeth."

"Lift it."

He picked up the mug. Dark blue ink immediately bled through the thick paper, swallowing the words I had spent all night refining.

"That was the final draft for tonight's gala," I told him, staring at the spreading stain. "The press will want copies."

"Then print another one." He checked his reflection in the microwave door. "Is my collar straight?"

"The printer is out of toner. I told you to buy some yesterday."

"Have Chloe do it. That's what we pay her for." He turned around, pointing at his neck. "The collar, Evelyn."

I stepped forward and smoothed the silk of his navy blue tie. "It is now."

"Good. You look tired, by the way. Put on some blush before we get to the station. The pale look doesn't work on camera."

Eighteen years. Three hundred and twelve speeches written at this very island. I had built this Sunday morning tableau—the loyal husband, the loving father—from scratch.

"Mum, where's my bag?" Oliver shouted from the hallway.

"On the chair," I called back. I picked up two gingerbread biscuits from the cooling rack and slid them into the front pocket of his leather interview satchel. "Eat these before the broadcast. Your blood sugar always drops."

"Yeah, yeah, thanks," Oliver muttered. He grabbed the strap and brushed past me without making eye contact. "Did you pack my blue shirt?"

"It's in the garment bag," I said. "Are you nervous about the interview?"

"No. Dad and I went over the talking points."

"I wrote those points," I reminded him gently.

"Right. Whatever." Oliver headed out the door.

Julian adjusted his cuffs. Back during his first mayoral run, he had caught my ink-stained fingers, pressing a kiss to my knuckles. *We win together, Evie. Half of this is always yours.*

Now, he just grabbed his car keys. "Make sure you smile for the cameras today. Don't look so tense. It makes people nervous."

Two hours later, the studio lights glared hot against the faux-wood panels of Channel 8's main set. I stood behind the monitors, holding the backup script.

Chloe, Julian's new campaign manager, strode onto the set. She wore a navy blue cashmere coat.

My coat. The one I loaned her last week when it rained.

"Mic check," the sound technician yelled from the booth.

"Coming," Chloe answered. She leaned over the anchor desk to adjust Julian's lapel. "You're looking sharp, Mayor."

"Thanks to you," Julian said softly.

As she moved, a heavy metal object swung from the coat's side pocket and struck the plastic microphone clip with a sharp clack.

A tarnished brass school badge.

St. Jude's Academy. Class of 2014.

Oliver had lost that badge when he was ten. We tore the house apart looking for it. He cried for three days because he couldn't wear it to the winter assembly.

And now it was in the pocket of my coat, worn by a twenty-six-year-old woman.

A cold knot formed in my stomach. The affair hadn't just stayed in hotel rooms or late-night office meetings. It had been inside my home. Inside my son's bedroom.

"Hey, Evelyn," Chloe called out, noticing me staring. "Do you have the updated cue cards?"

"They're loaded into the prompter," I said, my voice unnaturally steady. "Keep the coat, by the way. It suits you."

Chloe smirked. "Thanks. Julian said navy was my colour."

"Five seconds to live broadcast," the director announced over the PA.

"Knock 'em dead, Mayor," Chloe said, flashing Julian a brilliant smile.

He winked at her. "Always do."

I stayed still. Instead of confronting them, I let out a short, dry laugh. The sound technician shot me a weird look, but I just crossed my arms and watched the monitors.

"Welcome back to Morning Politics," the interviewer began, shuffling his index cards. "Mayor Ashcroft, your poll numbers have dipped following the recent zoning controversies. Some say your household is feeling the strain."

Julian adopted his practiced, solemn expression. The exact face I taught him to use for apologies.

"It has been a challenging year, Tom," Julian said, his voice smooth and measured. "My wife, Evelyn, is a deeply emotional woman. Sometimes, the pressures of public life are too much for her."

Emotional.

I gripped the edge of the soundboard.

"Are you saying the rumours about your marriage are true?" the interviewer asked.

"In fact," Julian continued, gesturing to the side of the stage. "Oliver, come sit with me."

My son walked onto the set. He passed my spot behind the cameras, taking the empty chair next to his father, right beneath the massive framed family portrait I had commissioned last Christmas.

"Oliver," the interviewer said. "How are things at home?"

Oliver looked straight into the central camera. "My dad has been carrying this family on his own for a long time."

"Oliver," I whispered, though the thick glass separated us. The gingerbread biscuits were still in his bag. He had eaten one in the green room. I saw the crumbs on his chin.

Julian placed a paternal hand on Oliver's shoulder. "We haven't wanted to make this public, out of respect for Evelyn's privacy. But due to her long-term mental instability, we have been quietly separated for eighteen months."

Eighteen months.

Every Sunday breakfast. Every speech. Every tie I adjusted.

"She needs help," Oliver added, his tone coated in rehearsed pity. "And we hope she gets it."

"A brave admission, Mayor," the interviewer nodded sympathetically. "Now, regarding the upcoming debate..."

The studio audience murmured. The interviewer leaned forward, eating up the scandal.

I didn't rush the stage. I didn't scream.

I reached into my blazer pocket and pulled out my master access lanyard. Attached to it was a red encrypted flash drive. It held the entire campaign database, every donor secret, and the live teleprompter feed. The risk warnings I had compiled over the last three years were all routed through that single piece of hardware.

I walked over to the main server rack by the director's booth.

"Hey, Mrs. Hart, you can't be back here," a production assistant muttered, stepping in my path.

"Excuse me," I said, moving past him.

"I'm serious, the director will—"

"Tell the director to run a commercial break," I told him, keeping my eyes on the glowing server tower.

I gripped the red plastic casing of the drive.

Julian was mid-sentence on the monitors. "My commitment to this city is as strong as my commitment to healing my family—"

I yanked the drive out of the USB port.

The teleprompter screens facing Julian went pitch black.

His mouth hung open. The smooth, practiced cadence died in his throat. He stared at the empty black glass, blinking rapidly.

"Mayor?" the interviewer prompted. "You were saying?"

Julian stammered. "I... the city..."

Oliver shifted in his seat, looking at his father for a cue that wasn't coming.

"Dad?" Oliver whispered, his microphone picking up the panic in his voice. "Read the screen."

"It's gone," Julian muttered back.

I dropped the red drive into my pocket and turned toward the heavy steel exit door.

My earpiece crackled.

Julian's hushed, panicked voice cut through the static, meant only for the control room.

"Evelyn, what did you just pull from the server?"
