Chapter 3

The nurse wheeled Vesper's small body toward me. My legs gave out as I collapsed beside her. Her skin was still warm, but the light had gone from her face. I gathered her into my arms, her limp form so light, so fragile.

"My baby, my sweet baby." I pressed kisses to her forehead, tasting salt from my endless tears. Her dark curls were damp with sweat, her lips tinged blue. The oxygen mask was gone now. She looked like she was sleeping, just sleeping.

"Mrs. Thorne." The nurse's voice was gentle. "We need to take her now."

"No, please." I clutched Vesper tighter. "Just a few more minutes."

"Come, let me help you up." The nurse slipped an arm around my waist, trying to guide me to my feet.

I resisted, my fingers tangled in Vesper's hospital gown. "I can't leave her alone."

"She's not in pain anymore." The nurse pulled harder. "You need to let us take care of her now."

My arms trembled as they lifted Vesper away. A wail built in my throat as I cried.

The double doors at the end of the hall swung open. Ryker emerged with his arm around Calypso's waist. Their faces were flushed with relief, with joy.

"He's stable." Calypso's voice carried down the corridor. "Our boy is going to make it."

Ryker pulled her closer. "We saved him. We saved our son."

They held each other, sharing triumphant smiles while my daughter's body grew cold on the gurney beside me. My chest heaved with sobs I couldn't contain.

"Mrs. Thorne, please." The nurse gripped my elbow. "Let's get you somewhere quiet."

I wrenched free from the nurse's grasp, my grief transforming into white-hot rage. My feet carried me down the sterile hallway toward them both. The sound of their celebration, their joy over their precious son while my daughter lay dead, pushed me over the edge.

My palm connected with Ryker's face in a sharp crack that echoed through the corridor. His head snapped to the side, a red mark blooming on his cheek.

"Why?" I screamed, my voice raw. "She was your daughter! Your flesh and blood!"

Ryker's eyes darkened as he touched his face. "Azalea-"

"You let her die! You chose him - that bastard child - over our daughter!" My fists pounded against his chest. "Where were you when she needed you? Where were the treatments you promised?"

"Control yourself," Ryker growled, grabbing my wrists.

Through my tears, I caught sight of Calypso's face. That snake wrapped around my husband wore a smirk that made my blood boil. She clung to Ryker's arm, watching my breakdown with barely concealed satisfaction.

The sight of her pleasure at my pain snapped something inside me. I yanked free from Ryker's grip and lunged for her, my hand raised to wipe that smile off her face.

Before I could reach her, Ryker's hand caught my arm. In one fluid motion, he spun me around and struck me across the face. The force knocked me sideways, my cheek burning from the impact.

"Don't you dare touch her," he snarled.

Ryker's spit landed on my cheek, mixing with my tears. "A son. That's what I wanted. Not some weak, sickly daughter you gave me."

My knees buckled as his words cut deeper than any blade. I stared at him through blurred vision, this stranger wearing my husband's face.

He pulled Calypso against him, his fingers digging into her waist. "This is my woman now. The real mother of my child."

Calypso's lips curved into a victorious smile. "Your daughter's gone. My son will carry on the Thorne legacy."

"How could you say that?" My voice cracked. "How could you speak of Vesper like she was nothing?"

"Shut up!" Ryker's face contorted with rage. "For all I know, that weak little bitch wasn't even mine."

The world tilted on its axis. "What?"

"You heard me. How many of my rivals did you spread your legs for? Which one of them fathered that pathetic excuse of a child?"

I shook my head, my mouth opening and closing without sound. This couldn't be happening.

"Calypso showed me everything." His eyes burned with hatred. "Told me all about your affairs. The secret meetings. The lies."

"No." I found my voice at last. "That's not true. I never-"

"Don't bother denying it." He jerked Calypso closer, pressing a kiss to her temple. "I know exactly what kind of whore you are."

I stood frozen, my mind reeling from the accusations. The truth stuck in my throat - I had never been unfaithful, not once.

But Calypso's satisfied smirk told me all I needed to know.

She had poisoned him against me.

The walls of the hospital corridor began to spin. Ryker's cruel words echoed in my head. My daughter was dead. My husband had betrayed me. Every foundation of my life crumbled beneath my feet.

Black spots danced at the edges of my vision. I tried to take a step back, but my legs wouldn't cooperate. The fluorescent lights above blurred into streaks of harsh white.

"I..." The word died in my throat.

The last thing I saw was Calypso's triumphant smile as my world tilted sideways.

The cold hospital floor rushed up to meet me as I fell, and then there was nothing but darkness.

Chapter 4

My eyes fluttered open to a stark white ceiling. A dull throb pulsed across my forehead where a bandage pulled at my skin. The antiseptic smell of the hospital room made my stomach turn.

A doctor in a white coat stepped through the doorway, clipboard in hand. "Mrs. Thorne. Good to see you're awake."

"What happened?" My voice came out raspy.

"You collapsed from acute stress and shock. We've monitored your vitals - you'll be fine with some rest."

I swallowed hard. "My husband... where is he?"

The doctor glanced at his notes. "Mr. Thorne and his companion left after discharging their son."

Their son. The words hit me like a physical blow. My precious Vesper's body lay cold in the morgue while they celebrated that woman's child.

A tear slid down my cheek before I could stop it. I pushed myself up from the bed, ignoring the doctor's concerned look. My legs shook as I stood, but I forced them steady.

I walked to the small bathroom, gripping the edge of the sink. In the mirror, a stranger stared back, hollow-eyed, pale, with dried tear tracks on her cheeks.

My hand trembled as I wiped away the wetness on my face. What happened couldn't be undone. My sweet girl was gone.

"I promise you, Vesper," I whispered to my reflection. "Mommy will make them pay for what they did to you."

I pushed through the hospital's glass doors into the humid night air.

My heels clicked against the concrete as I made my way to the parking lot. The valet brought my car around - a sleek black Mercedes that Ryker had "gifted" me when we married. Another pretty cage.

Five years ago, I'd walked down the aisle starry-eyed, believing the merger of our families would be more than just business. My father, head of the Silver syndicate, had practically glowed with pride when Ryker Thorne had shown interest in his only daughter.

The Thornes controlled the entire eastern seaboard - an alliance through marriage was too valuable to pass up.

My mother knew better. The night before my wedding, she'd grabbed my hands, pressed a piece of paper into them. "Memorize this number," she'd whispered. "Burn the paper. Call it if you ever need real help - the kind your father and I can't provide."

I'd nodded, confused but obedient, and done as she asked.

Through five years of marriage, taking care of Vesper and countless nights alone while Ryker "worked," I'd never touched that number.

My fingers shook as I pulled out my phone. The digits came to me without hesitation, burned into my memory by my mother's urgency. I punched them in, held the phone to my ear, and waited.

The phone rang three times. My heart pounded against my ribs. The line clicked, but no voice came through.

"Hello?" I cleared my throat. "My name is Azalea Thorne. My mother told me to call this number if I ever needed help."

A deep male voice broke the silence. "Hi."

The simple greeting caught me off guard. I waited for more, for a name, but none came.

"I've been expecting your call."

My fingers tightened around the phone. "What? How could you-"

"No time to explain. Where are you?"

I shifted my weight, glancing around the empty parking lot. The streetlights cast long shadows across the pavement. "Memorial Hospital. East parking lot."

"Stay there. I'm sending a car - ten minutes." His tone left no room for argument. "I look forward to meeting you, Azalea."

The line went dead before I could respond.

I stared at my phone screen. Who had I just spoken to? And how had he known I would call?

Just as promised, a black Bentley pulled up beside me. The driver, dressed in an impeccable suit, stepped out and opened the rear door.

"Mrs. Thorne."

"Where are we going?" I slid into the plush leather seat.

"I'm afraid I can't say. Boss's orders are to bring you directly to him."

Boss? My heart skipped. I gripped the edge of my seat as we wound through dark streets, each turn taking us further from familiar territory. What had I gotten myself into?

I closed my eyes. The worst had already happened, I had nothing left to fear.

The car slowed, tires crunching on gravel. I opened my eyes to see wrought iron gates swinging open. Beyond them stood a mansion that made Ryker's look modest.

My breath caught as we pulled up to the entrance, realization dawned on me as I remembered the mansion from countless news reports and photographs Ryker had shown me.

There, framed by massive double doors, stood a figure waiting for me.

The silver streak in his dark hair caught the light as he smiled.

"Welcome to my home, Mrs. Thorne." his voice matched the one from the phone. "I believe we have much to discuss."

I stepped out of the car on shaky legs.

Zephyr Ravencroft… Ryker's greatest rival, the man he'd spent years trying to destroy, had been my mother's secret contact all along.

My legs felt like lead as I approached him. The man Ryker had cursed countless times over dinner. The man whose very name made my husband's face twist with rage.

"You look surprised." Zephyr's voice carried none of the menace I'd imagined from Ryker's stories. "Please, come inside."

I followed him through the grand entrance, my mind spinning. "My mother... she knew you?"

"Your mom and I go way back." He guided me down a hallway lined with artwork that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe. "She never trusted Ryker. Smart woman."

The mansion's interior breathed old money - not the gaudy displays of wealth Ryker preferred. Everything spoke of understated elegance, from the Persian rugs to the antique furnishings.

"But why-" My voice cracked. "Why didn't she warn me directly?"

Zephyr paused at a set of mahogany doors. "Would you have believed her? The sheltered daughter of Vincent Silver, raised to be the perfect mafia princess?" His gray eyes held no judgment, just understanding. "Sometimes people need to learn harsh truths on their own."

My fingers curled into fists. He was right. Five years ago, I wouldn't have listened. I'd been too caught up in Ryker's charm, too naive to see the cage being built around me.

"Through here." He pushed open the doors to reveal a study that could have belonged in an English manor house. "We have much to discuss about your daughter... and your husband's deception."

I froze mid-step. "You know about Vesper?"

"I know everything, Mrs. Thorne." He gestured to a leather armchair. "Including what Ryker's been hiding from you."

Chapter 5

Zephyr's hand brushed my elbow as he guided me to the chair. The leather creaked beneath me, but I barely registered the sound.

"First, I need to apologize." His face darkened. "About Vesper."

My heart clenched. The mere mention of her name brought back the sterile hospital rooms, the beeping machines, her tiny body wrapped in blankets.

"I tried to get the information to you sooner about the experimental treatments." He leaned against his desk, hands gripping the edge. "If I had..."

"Don't." I swallowed hard, refusing to let the tears fall. "Please."

He nodded, respecting my need to hold myself together. "There's more you need to know. About Ryker."

The way he said my husband's name made my skin crawl.

"Calypso Reign." He let the name hang in the air. "They never ended things."

"What?"

"The marriage to you was arranged. Your family connections, your reputation - that's what his father wanted. But Ryker..." Zephyr pushed away from the desk, pacing. "He kept seeing her."

My mouth went dry. "No."

"She got pregnant around the same time you did." His words hit like physical blows. "He's been keeping them in a villa outside the city. Three million a year in expenses, private schools, vacation homes."

The room spun. I gripped the armrests, my knuckles white. All those business trips. The late nights. The missed birthdays and hospital visits.

"While Vesper needed treatments..." My voice came out as a whisper.

"He's been funneling money to them for years. I'm sorry, Azalea. But you deserved to know the truth."

The worst part? Deep down, I'd known something wasn't right. I'd ignored the signs, buried my suspicions, played the perfect wife while my daughter suffered.

My trembling fingers found Ryker's contact. I needed to hear it from him - his lies, his betrayal. Each ring echoed in my ears like a death knell.

"Don't-" Zephyr reached for the phone, then pulled back. "Go on. You need this."

The line clicked.

"Oh, sweetie." Calypso's honeyed voice slithered through the speaker. "Ryker's a bit... indisposed at the moment. Just finished fucking me senseless, gave me quite the workout, if you know what I mean. He's washing up."

My stomach lurched. Blood roared in my ears.

"What do you want?" I managed to force out.

Her laugh cut like glass. "Want? I have everything I want. The man, the money, the power." A pause. "Well, almost everything. That pesky little problem of your daughter's medical needs kept getting in our way."

"What are you talking about?"

"You know, it's amazing how quickly hospitals respond when there's only one compatible donor left." Her voice dripped with false sympathy. "Such a tragedy about my boy's accident today. Running right into traffic like that... who could have seen it coming?"

The phone slipped from my numb fingers. Zephyr caught it before it hit the floor, his face twisted in fury as Calypso's voice continued to spill poison.

"I knew your precious Vesper wouldn't have gotten that blood transfusion after all. Oops."

My heart dropped. Zephyr's arm remained on my shoulder, keeping me upright as the room tilted sideways.

"You..." The word came out as a strangled whisper. "Your own child?"

"Collateral damage, honey. Besides, Ryker and I can always make more."

"Oh, those voicemails you left." Calypso's voice turned sickeningly sweet. "Begging Ryker to come to the hospital, crying about how Vesper needed his blood type. It was pathetic really. I had to listen to them over and over while he was with me."

The room spun. Bile rose in my throat.

"Couldn't let that happen, could I?" She clicked her tongue. "My boy served his purpose. Two birds, one stone - he's safe with Ryker's blood now, and your precious Vesper..." She laughed. "Well, accidents happen in hospitals all the time, don't they?"

"You monster." The words scraped my throat raw.

"Monster? Please. I'm a mother too. I protected my child. Got him the blood he needed. The fact that your daughter didn't make it?" Her voice dropped to a whisper. "That was just a delicious bonus. God, it felt good watching those machines flatline."

The phone cracked in Zephyr's hand. His face had turned to stone, but his eyes blazed with a fury that matched the inferno building in my chest.

My vision blurred red. The perfect wife, the devoted mother - those masks shattered. In their place, something darker emerged. Something that understood exactly why people killed.

"Calypso?" My voice steadied.

"Yes, sweetie?"

"I'm going to destroy you."

Her laugh cut off abruptly. "You? The trophy wife? Please-"

I ended the call.

I turned to Zephyr, my hands still shaking from the call. "I don't know how you knew my mother, or why you're helping me. But I need something from you."

His steel-gray eyes met mine. The rage hadn't left them, but something else flickered there too - understanding, perhaps. Or recognition of the change that had crystallized inside me.

"First, I want divorce papers drawn up. Immediately." The words felt foreign on my tongue, yet right. Like stepping out of a cage I hadn't known existed.

"Consider it done." He pulled out his phone, fingers moving across the screen. "I have excellent lawyers who specialize in... complicated separations."

"And then-" My voice caught. I steadied myself against the desk. "I want to destroy them. All of them. Ryker, Calypso, everyone who stood by while my daughter-"

The word died in my throat. Zephyr's hand found my shoulder, solid and grounding.

"They killed her. Used her illness as a weapon." My fingers curled into fists. "I want them to feel what I'm feeling. I want them to lose everything."

"Azalea." His voice carried weight, authority. "Are you certain? This path... once you start down it-"

"I died in that hospital room with Vesper." The truth of it rang through my bones. "The woman they thought they could control? She's gone. And what's left wants justice."

He studied me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then he nodded, once. "We'll need to move carefully. Strategic. But I promise you this - they won't see you coming. Not until it's too late."

"Why?" I asked. "Why help me?"

His jaw tightened. Something dark passed across his face. "Let's just say I understand loss. And what it means to watch someone you love suffer while others play games with their life."

A flicker of understanding passed between us. The weight of his words, the tension in his shoulders - they spoke of a grief as deep as mine. Different, but just as raw. I could see it etched in the tight lines around his mouth.

"I want to die." The words slipped out, but carried none of the despair that had haunted me since the hospital. Instead, they felt like the first true breath I'd taken in months.

His eyebrow raised slightly, storm-gray eyes studying my face with newfound interest.

"Officially," I clarified, my mind already racing with possibilities, pieces falling into place like a deadly puzzle. "The perfect grieving widow, unable to bear the loss of her child, takes her own life. It's what they'd expect, isn't it? The weak, fragile woman they think I am? The one who arranges flowers and hosts dinner parties while her husband builds his empire?"

A slow smile spread across Zephyr's face, appreciation glinting in his eyes. "Oh, I do like a strong woman." He leaned back against his desk, the silver streak in his dark hair catching the lamplight.

"Death can be quite useful when you're planning to rise from the ashes. And darling, you're already burning."

He Saved His Mistress's Child Over Ours!
