Chapter 1 of He Said I Had Nowhere to Go, Then I Took Back the Airline

I went to the private terminal to surprise my husband on our anniversary.

Instead, I found him kissing the flight attendant he once called “just an old friend.”

Then I heard the part that finally killed whatever love I had left.

“Let Amelia sign the new aircraft agreement first. After that, I’ll deal with the divorce.”

So I took off my wedding ring, filed first, and booked the last private flight out of the city.

There was only one other passenger.

Roman Cross.

My husband’s billionaire rival.

Halfway through the flight, turbulence threw me straight into Roman’s arms. One glass of whiskey became two, and I woke up with my cheek against his shoulder while my ex called the cockpit demanding that the plane turn around.

Roman picked up the cabin phone.

“She isn’t your wife anymore.”

Then I gave the captain my own instruction.

“Keep flying.”

My ex still had no idea whose family owned the jet.

The bottle of twenty-year Highland single malt felt heavy in my hands, nestled in its dark velvet box alongside a silver ribbon.

It was Ethan’s favorite. I had spent three weeks tracking down the specific vintage to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary.

Inside my leather tote, beneath the gift box, sat the finalized aircraft lease agreements for Vale Aero. I had spent the last forty-eight hours negotiating with the underwriters, securing the exact credit terms Ethan needed to double our private charter fleet.

He had called me five hours ago, sounding exhausted, claiming an emergency charter to Boston had pulled him away for the night.

"I'm sorry, Amy," he had said over the phone, his voice laced with that familiar, hurried fatigue. "The client booked the Gulfstream at triple the rate. I have to oversee the ground departure myself. We'll celebrate tomorrow."

I hadn't been angry. I thought our marriage was simply tired, worn thin by the relentless grind of expanding the company. I convinced myself that once this expansion deal was sealed, we could finally take the month off in Amalfi we had talked about for three years.

I rolled my small carry-on suitcase across the quiet concourse of the Vale Aero private terminal. The tarmac lights outside washed the hangar in cool amber and white.

I took the private elevator up to the executive mezzanine, intending to surprise him in his corner office before he left for the night.

The corridor was empty, but the light spilled out from the VIP lounge at the end of the hall.

As I reached the frosted glass wall, I stopped.

The door was slightly open.

Through the clear pane in the middle of the glass, I didn't see flight manifests or late-night corporate clients.

I saw Serena.

She wasn't wearing her crisp navy flight attendant uniform. She wore a fitted red silk dress—the exact shade Ethan had pointed out in a Milan boutique two years ago, murmuring that it belonged on a woman who knew how to command a room.

Ethan stood directly behind her.

His hands rested on her bare shoulders, his fingers sliding up to the nape of her neck as he fastened a platinum diamond pendant around her throat.

"Do you like it?" Ethan asked, his voice low and intimate through the crack in the door.

Serena turned around, lifting her hand to trace the line of his jaw. "It's beautiful, Ethan. But I'm tired of hiding in private suites and hotel lobbies."

She pressed her chest against his crisp white dress shirt, looking up at him with dark, possessive eyes. "When are you going to tell her? When is this finally going to be public?"

Ethan cupped the back of her head, pulling her into a deep, lingering kiss that made my breath turn to ice in my chest.

He didn't pull away quickly. He held her against him with a fierce familiarity that didn't belong to a new affair.

When he finally broke the kiss, his lips grazed her temple.

"Soon," Ethan murmured. "Just be patient a little longer. Let Amelia sign the fleet renewal first."

Serena let out a soft, teasing sigh against his neck. "You're still using her family's bank connection."

"Without her signature and her family's collateral, the lenders won't release the new Gulfstreams," Ethan replied without hesitation. "Once the ink dries on the renewal, Vale Aero is fully mine. Then I'll hand her the settlement."

The world seemed to stop spinning.

The fatigue, the late nights, the missed dinners, the cold side of the bed—none of it was about business. It had all been calculated.

Every late hour I worked, every contract I salvaged, every favor I called in for Vale Aero had just been tools to build a golden cage for Ethan and his mistress.

I didn't tremble. A strange, suffocating numbness settled over my skin, followed by a violent, crystallizing clarity.

I pushed the heavy glass door all the way open.

The door struck the rubber stopper with a dull thud.

Ethan pulled his hands away from Serena instantly, his head snapping toward the entrance.

When his eyes landed on me, standing there with the velvet gift box in one hand and the lease folder under my arm, the color drained from his face for a split second.

Then, his expression shifted.

There was no shame. No sudden panic. Just cold irritation.

"Amelia," Ethan said, smoothing the front of his suit jacket. He glanced sideways at Serena. "Wait in the briefing room."

Serena smoothed down her red dress, taking her time. She didn't look flustered at all; she looked at me with an amused, insolent calm.

"What are you doing here?" Ethan demanded, stepping forward to block my view of the lounge table. "You know I hate it when you show up unannounced to check up on me during client hours."

"Client hours?" I repeated, my voice terrifyingly calm.

I walked into the center of the room and placed the twenty-year whiskey on the glass coffee table, right beside an open bottle of vintage champagne and two half-empty flutes.

"Happy fifth anniversary, Ethan," I said.

Ethan stared at the box, his jaw tightening. "Amelia, don't make a scene in the terminal. If you're upset about Serena being here, we can talk about her reassignment at home."

"Her reassignment?" A bitter sound escaped my throat. "Is that what you call sleeping with her while waiting for me to sign your expansion loans?"

Ethan’s eyes hardened. He took a step closer, lowering his voice to a sharp, commanding hiss. "Lower your voice. You don't understand the pressure I'm under to keep this company afloat. You're overreacting to a harmless distraction."

"How long?" I asked.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I looked directly into his eyes, searching for even a shred of the man I had married five years ago.

"Ethan," I said again, each word sharp as glass. "How long has this been going on?"

Before Ethan could answer, Serena paused in the doorway. She turned back, resting a manicured hand on the doorframe, her lips curving into a soft, venomous smile.

"Long enough that I know which side of the bed he sleeps on," Serena said softly.

The silence that followed was absolute.

Ethan didn't correct her. He didn't tell her to shut up. He just looked at me with a cold, defensive glare, as if my discovery of his betrayal was an inconvenience I had inflicted on his schedule.

"Go home, Amelia," Ethan ordered quietly. "We'll deal with this tomorrow after you look over the fleet contracts."

That was the exact moment the last remnant of my marriage died.

I looked down at the gold and diamond wedding band on my left hand—the ring I had protected, cherished, and honored for five blind years.

I twisted the ring off my finger.

I picked up Ethan’s crystal whiskey glass from the side table, dropped the ring inside, and listened to the heavy metallic clink as it struck the bottom.

"Keep the ring," I said, meeting his gaze. "And keep the planes you already have. Because you're never getting my signature on that renewal."

Ethan’s eyes flared with anger. "Amelia, if you pull your backing, you ruin both of us—"

"No, Ethan," I interrupted, taking a step back toward the door. "I ruin you. I'm taking everything that has my name on it."

I pulled out my phone, typed a single sentence to Julian, my family’s head attorney: *File the divorce petition tonight. Freeze our joint personal credit lines and notify the banks that I am withdrawing any unsigned Hartwell backing immediately.*

I hit send.

I turned my back on Ethan, ignoring his voice shouting my name down the corridor, and walked straight out to the departure gate.

My suitcase was already packed for the vacation Ethan had never intended to take.

Outside on the private apron, a shared charter with one open seat was prepping for departure to New York—the last eastbound flight leaving the airfield tonight. I scanned my corporate executive clearance at the gate and climbed the airstairs into the cabin.

The cabin was dimmed, bathed in low blue ambient lighting.

I stepped into the aisle, expecting an empty cabin, and froze.

Sitting in the single wide leather club seat across the aisle, an amber drink in hand, was Roman Cross.

Ethan’s fiercest business rival. The man Ethan had spent three ruthless years trying to destroy in every aviation market on the East Coast.

Roman wore a dark charcoal suit, his broad shoulders relaxed against the leather, his piercing grey eyes locked onto mine the second I stepped through the door.

He glanced at my luggage, then slowly looked down at my left hand, noticing the bare skin where my wedding band had been ten minutes ago.

A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of his lips.

"Bad night, Mrs. Vale?" Roman asked, his voice low and smooth against the hum of the jet engines.
