Chapter 3
"Forget it, don't bother with her. Today's heroine is Sister Scarlett."
Jacob stood up with a glass of wine in his hand, "Sister Scarlett, I haven't congratulated you yet, but my brother-in-law said that your hard work has been noticed and you were finally promoted and given a raise. I knew you could do it."
Scarlett stood up with a smile and followed suit, "How could that be? I have to thank you two for your care."
Looking at the three of them talking and laughing, it seemed like they were a family.
I felt like an unnecessary person, sitting there feeling awkward and embarrassed, and so sad that I couldn't breathe.
It turned out that Vincent sent me a text message today to inform me to come to Sapphire Room for dinner.
Not because he remembered that today was my birthday.
It was to celebrate the secretary's promotion and salary increase, and to make it more lively with more people.
After they drank three glasses of wine, I still sat there indifferently, not even moving my chopsticks.
Jacob glanced at me several times with dissatisfaction, but he held back from getting angry.
Vincent also frowned slightly.
"Why don't you eat?"
I stared calmly at the dishes in front of me, none of which I could eat.
All cater to Scarlett's taste.
Suddenly I remembered every time Scarlett came home.
No matter how busy he is, Vincent will cook for himself.
"Those chefs don't know Scarlett's taste. I'm worried she won't be able to get used to it."
Scarlett is extremely picky. She doesn't eat onions, ginger, or garlic, and she also wants the food to be just the right level of spiciness.
Vincent understands her better than he understands me as his wife.
But every time I just pursed my lips and stood there watching.
In the ten years of marriage, Vincent has never cooked for me himself.
But he would be angry if Scarlett frowned, pursed her lips, or said something like "it's not tasty".
I would spend several days in the kitchen studying cooking.
Even when the fish was served, Vincent would personally pick out the fish bones and place them in front of Scarlett.
But such a small thing.
I've never experienced that.
At this moment I am stroking the calluses on my hands.
Still silent and stubborn.
"Vincent, after this meal we're going to go to City Hall to get a divorce."
I don't want to wait any longer.
I just want to get a divorce certificate and end this decade-long period of marital neglect and bullying.
The smile on Vincent's face completely faded.
"Emily, if you want to throw a tantrum, go home and do it. We finally come out for a meal, do we have to let everyone see your face?"
"And I just picked a fish bone for Scarlett. Why are you doing this? What's wrong with you?"
I looked at the man's face in front of me and felt that he was so strange.
In his early years, Vincent was involved in gangs.
I have been with him since I was 18.
During the worst year of my life, I had to compete with hungry dogs for food.
Vincent gave me a piece of cake, and I entrusted my life to him.
He brought me in front of the brothers and smoked a cigarette, "Her name is Emily, and she will be your big sister from now on."
Not long after we got married, he got into trouble and went to jail.
One level lasts for five years.
In order to support my brothers, I worked from dawn to dusk setting up a stall selling French crepes.
She didn't even know she was pregnant at the time, and she suffered a miscarriage due to excessive exhaustion.
Later, I set up a business by selling two villas from a stall selling French crepes.
After accumulating capital, Vincent was able to start his own business. As soon as he was released from prison, he became a prominent business boss.
But after he became rich, the first thing he did was not to repay me and let me suffer less.
Instead, he brought his brother's wife Scarlett back home.
She was allowed to live in a newly purchased private villa and was recruited into the company as a secretary with little extra work.
Chapter 4
Birthdays, holidays and various anniversaries every year.
Scarlett received so many gifts.
Every time I questioned him, Vincent gave me earnest explanations.
"It was because of me that Scarlett married my brother. That brother died trying to save me. Do you think I can be irresponsible for my brother's wife?"
Seeing my haggard face, Vincent softened his tone to comfort me.
"You made a living selling crepes for me. How could I forget your kindness?"
"Don't think too much about it. I just treat Scarlett as my younger sister. It has been the same for all these years."
But how could I not know?
He felt unworthy of having a wife who sold crepes.
He took his secretary to the cocktail party, and everyone misunderstood that she was the real wife, but he refused to explain.
Even the group of brothers in the past.
Call me Big Sister politely in person.
But privately, they call Scarlett little Emily.
Even if Vincent doesn't admit it, it can't change the preference he has revealed intentionally or unintentionally over the years.
The meal was not pleasant.
I didn't even move my chopsticks, I stood up and said, "Since I'm redundant, I won't bother you anymore."
Jacob slammed the table in anger.
"Emily, you've gone too far this time. Are you possessed by evil spirits for no reason? A crepe seller is really not presentable."
He complained in a low voice, "Brother-in-law, she shouldn't have been allowed to come in the first place. The celebration party we prepared for Sister Scarlett was ruined by her."
I was filled with disappointment. My parents died early, and Jacob and I depended on each other for survival. He ate my food, drank my water, and relied on me for support.
Now that he's drinking broth with Vincent, he starts to dislike the fact that my French crepes are not up to par.
I called the waiter and asked them to bring paper and pen, and wrote a statement of termination of guardianship on the spot.
"Since you think that I am not a decent enough sister, then let's sever our relationship."
"Jacob, from now on you can let someone else be your sister. Whether she lives or dies has nothing to do with me."
Jacob became angry when he heard this, and he did not hide the disgust in his eyes.
"Is there any sister like you? I just said a few words to you, and you turned your face away like that, and you even threatened to break off the relationship?"
"You are emotionally unstable, right?"
"Anyway, I have my brother-in-law here, so I am not afraid of starving. Since you took the initiative to break up the engagement, I will do as you wish."
He signed the release statement without hesitation.
Then it hit me in the face.
Jacob looked very proud:
"In the future, my brother-in-law will buy me a villa and help me find a wife. What difference will it make whether I have a sister like you or not? I still think that selling French crepes is not respectable enough."
I put away the custody termination statement expressionlessly. I want to see if Vincent will still help you after the divorce since we have no relationship at all.
Seeing that I decided to leave, Vincent didn't stop me.
"You are not in a stable mood today. Go home and have a good rest. Don't go out to the stall today."
I stood at the door and looked back coldly.
"Vincent, I just want to ask, today is my birthday, have you ever thought about buying me a birthday cake?"
Vincent was stunned, and looked up at me in shock: "What? You... today is your birthday, why didn't you tell me earlier?"
He immediately stood up and tried to pull me back to sit down, "Hurry up and sit down. I'll order a cake for you now."
I smiled bitterly and shook off his hand, "No need, belated affection is cheaper than grass."
What's more, I just want to ask, when he was busy organizing a celebration party for his secretary Scarlett, did he ever think of me for a moment.
Chapter 5
Even for a moment.
But no.
"Tomorrow I will have my lawyer prepare a Prenuptial Agreement. We will get a divorce and you won't have to celebrate my birthday anymore in this life."
I left without looking back, and I heard Vincent's anxious shouts behind me, but he didn't catch up with me in the end.
I went out, gritted my teeth, and hailed a taxi back from the roadside.
The driver asked me where I was going. I wiped the tears from my face and said, "Anywhere is fine."
Finally, the driver dropped me off by the river. Seeing that I was in a bad mood, he bought me a cup of coffee.
"Girl, I'll buy you a drink."
"Life is short, happiness is the most important thing, don't be depressed."
I ordered a takeout, squatted by the river, enjoying the cool breeze and eating cake to celebrate my birthday.
The cake was very sweet, which is my favorite flavor, but I started to cry while eating it.
In the past ten years, I have lived frugally and given every penny I earned to this family.
I can take the bus when I go out, but I don’t even want to take a taxi. I can’t bear to buy new clothes when my clothes are still wearable.
I thought Vincent could see my dedication and hard work, but in return I only felt moved.
In the past two years, the family has not been short of money.
But there is very little money for me.
Vincent has a company to run, social events to give gifts to, and a secretary to support.
Every time he attended a cocktail party, the female companion he brought was Scarlett.
Everyone knew that he despised me, an old woman selling French pancakes, and thought I was not worthy of appearing in front of him.
He would give her gifts every year, but in the ten years I've been with him, I've never received one.
Every time I lost control and asked, he frowned and said:
"Those outsiders are ignorant, are you ignorant too?"
"You know very well that Scarlett's husband died just to save me. Before he died, I promised him that I would take care of Scarlett for the rest of her life."
So he had the confidence to recruit Scarlett into the company as a secretary.
Even though she knows nothing and does nothing, she still enjoys the highest treatment in the company.
In the air-conditioned office, directing others to work.
There was even one time when he ordered 200 sets of crepes just to play a trick on me, under the pretext of a company meeting.
I made it overnight and sent it to her while it was still hot.
Scarlett pretended to be surprised and exclaimed: "Oh no, I forgot. Brother Vincent specially called a Michelin five-star chef to cook for everyone today."
"Sister Emily, I'm so sorry to have made you come here for nothing."
Vincent waved his hand after learning about the situation.
"It's no big deal. If you don't need it, just go back."
"Isn't it just French crepes? They're homemade anyway, so we have plenty."
But I am not just a crepe seller. I have hands and feet, and I can support myself. I am no worse than them.
I have made enough money over the years to help Vincent earn the first pot of gold to start his own company.
I also earned a villa.
But I sacrificed 10 years of my youth.
Next, it’s time for me to live for myself.
After eating the cake, I took a taxi to the mall, changed out of that outfit, and started trying on various dresses and suits without setting any limits for myself.
Just when I was trying on the fifth set of clothes, I went out and saw Vincent and Scarlett there.
"Ma'am, this dress really suits you. It looks great."
The clerk's exclamation attracted the attention of passers-by, and Vincent and Scarlett turned around at the same time.
When Vincent saw me coming out of the fitting room, there was a flash of surprise in his eyes.
"Emily, why are you like this? Take it off quickly, this style doesn't suit you."
