Chapter 1 of He Hid His Wife and Child, Then Made Me Keep His House

On the evening of the Feast of San Valentino, I showed up outside the row house where my soldier kept his mother, flowers in hand, ready to surprise him. Instead I found a coworker's child standing alone outside the shuttered corner store below.

The little boy's nose was red from crying. He tugged at my coat and sobbed, "I want my daddy. He said he'd be right back after buying Mama a strawberry cake."

My heart melted. I crouched down to comfort him, wiping his tears while searching his little jacket for some name, some way to reach whoever had left him. That's when a photo slipped out.

A family portrait.

In it, the man I loved, the one who always swore he was "buried in the books at the club, squaring the Family's numbers," was beaming, lifting the little boy high above his head.

Beside them stood Bianca Ricci. The made man's daughter he always said he couldn't stand.

I looked down at the bag in my other hand, the fine wool I'd bought for his parents against the winter, and thought of all those late nights he'd cut our calls short, always too busy with the Family's affairs.

A chill crept up from my feet.

The next morning I walked into the front business he answered to, the photo clutched in my fist. In the lobby of the hotel that laundered the Ricci money clean, I ran straight into Bianca, the child balanced on her hip.

She saw me and smiled without a trace of shame. Before she spoke she glanced at her own reflection in the polished brass of the elevator doors, just long enough to be sure the mask sat perfectly.

"Oh, right. I forgot to mention. We were given a sanctioned union last year, blessed by my father himself. He said you were too naive, that you'd be perfect for keeping his mother's house. He just couldn't bring himself to tell you."

The flowers slipped from my hand and hit the marble, petals scattering into the dust.

So all those late-night "obligations to the Family" had been spent with his bound wife and his son.

All those tonics he'd sent me to buy for "his parents"? They'd always gone to his real in-laws, to the made man whose ring had bought Salvatore his standing.

What I thought was a love story, two people running toward each other, had been a joke from the very beginning.

Two of the house men took me by the arms and walked me out, unhurried, the way you remove something that doesn't matter. But from the corner of my eye I caught Salvatore Ferraro, the man who was supposed to be "working late for the Family," crossing the lobby to lift the child from Bianca's arms.

He kissed the boy's forehead.

The tenderness in his eyes was something I'd never once been given. They looked exactly like a happy family of three.

My legs gave out. I slid down against the cold stone, watching their silhouettes vanish into the private dining room where men like him were served without asking.

I thought about how I'd just charged in, demanding answers, making a scene in a place where a woman with no name and no protection makes a scene only once.

My vision went dark.

Eight years since we first met. Five years at his side.

And he already had a four-year-old son.

All those excuses, "the Family needs me," "it's a bad time," he'd been busy taking a wife, busy fathering a child, busy being the rising young earner with the perfect life the bosses smiled on.

Meanwhile he'd left his sick mother on my hands. Left me to carry every silent, unpaid hour of that house.

He'd even let me play the other woman, the kept woman with no blood-recognized union to stand on, for four whole years.

I pressed my hand over my mouth, fighting back tears. Without thinking, my thumb found the thin silver ring on my right hand, my mother's ring, and turned it, turned it, as if it could steady the ground under me.

I pulled out my phone to demand an explanation. But his message had already arrived before I could send mine.

"Having some of the crew over for dinner tonight. Make something worth their while. Set a plate for the baby too."

When I tried to call, all I got was a flat, mechanical voice: "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable."

I looked back through the glass. His phone was in his bound wife's hand now.

There had been times before when I couldn't reach him and let my temper get the better of me.

He'd answered cold, said that taking calls while the Family's business was on the table broke a man's focus, made him look weak in front of made men. Told me to stop being unreasonable.

And I'd felt guilty. Rushed to brew him bitter herbs. Taught myself to work the tension out of his shoulders with my own hands.

Looking back now, it was pathetic.

I hadn't even known the man I gave my life to already had a wife.

But back in our last year of school we'd been the kind of sweethearts who swore we'd never break, not even when the old priest who ran the parish caught us behind the church and threatened to tell everyone.

I remembered how it started.

I was invisible. The orphan girl nobody on the block claimed, raised on the fringe of the only world these men knew. He was the brightest of them all, the one every capo wanted for his crew.

And yet this boy, the one I never dared dream about, had come at them without a breath of hesitation when the collectors tried to shake me down for coin I didn't have.

He stood between me and the world for the rest of our years there.

After that he became my teacher, my confidant, the one I meant to spend my life beside.

I thought, at last, some small mercy had been placed in my hands.

How did it come to this?

He was the one holding up the trophy from the front business he'd built, sharing his victory with me. I was the one working three jobs past midnight to pay down the debt on his house.
