Chapter 1
ZIA
The night I tried on my wedding dress alone, my blind father was brutally beaten by my fiancé. My tears broke when I connected with Casey's video call, who smiled smugly.
"This is fitting retribution for the old man who dared to harassing my best friend!" Noel said as he kicked my father's back harder. The sound of breaking bones made me hysterical.
It made no sense. My father was blind. But just because of Casey’s accusation, Noel believed my father was the suspect.
When I got home, my father had been taken to the hospital. Noel's face was different, pale this time. He hugged me.
"Zia, your father has been proven innocent. This was all the work of my business rival," he whispered. "I'm sorry and have paid dearly for his special care."
My blood boiled right up to brain. He thought an apology and money could fix everything.
"It was my fault," Casey cried with a fake mask. "My eyes were covered with a cloth and I thought... your father did it."
"Don't be angry at Casey, she just panicked because your father was there." Noel let go of the hug. "And this has nothing to do with our wedding. Everything will still happen."
For two years, Noel had covered up Casey's little mistakes to me, two years Noel had successfully persuaded me in crazy ways. But today was the end. I couldn't forgive them for daring to touch my family.
I no longer thought about the wedding. Instead, I would do anything to make my family disappear from Noel's world. And make sure they got what they deserved!
—
My father's bones weren't just broken—the doctor said he was paralyzed for life. When he came to, he gripped my hand tightly with trembling fingers.
"Zia... Someone said you were in danger at Noel's house, so I came. But Casey was there and suddenly accused me. She loves Noel, all of this... just so your wedding would be canceled. So you have to marry Noel."
My tears fell heavily. My fists clenched so tightly my nails dug into my skin. "Dad, how can I marry the man who almost killed you?"
"I'm fine." His lips forced a bitter smile, while his eyes—which would never see the world—stared blankly. "If you cancel, it's the same as letting Casey win. Don't sacrifice your love for Noel just because of me."
My heart felt torn. But before I could answer, the door opened. Noel walked in, and Casey stood sweetly by his side, as if they were a legitimate couple.
"Zia, take your father home in a taxi. I have to take Casey to her modeling job."
Hearing the cold tone in his voice, I stood up. Holding back my boiling anger. "Noel, don't you feel the need to apologize to my father for all this?"
Dad tried to calm me down with a weak pat on my back, but I ignored him. My eyes were fixed sharply on Casey. "And you—you should be punished for accusing a blind person without evidence!"
Casey immediately teared up, clutching Noel's arm. Her voice was soft, full of falsehood. "I... I was just scared, Zia. I didn't mean to..."
"You're overreacting, Zia." Noel stared at me sharply, his face stiff. "I've been supporting you and Mr. Alfred financially for two whole years. I paid for this hospital. Now, with your father paralyzed, he can't work. That means I'll be the one supporting both of you. Isn't everything easier for you and your father after this accident?"
His words hit harder than a punch. All my sacrifices, two years of full dedication as a secretary to get Noel's company back on its feet—meant nothing to him.
Noel pulled Casey out. The door slammed behind them.
I fell into a chair. My breath was ragged. Noel had dug into our wounds until they bled, then stuffed them with money as if it were a cure. But for us... it was poison.
And inside my heart, something broke. My love had died.
“Zia, it's all because of Dad." His grip tightened on me. His eyes filled with tears. "If only—"
"No, Dad." I interrupted gently. I kissed his hand repeatedly. "This isn't your fault."
Suddenly, his grip tightened. His breathing became labored, his face pale. My father had a history of heart disease.
"Doctor!" I shouted in panic.
I pressed the call button repeatedly, but no nurse appeared. Panic began to choke me.
I ran out of the room and saw Noel's assistant, walking by with a casual stride. "Help my father! Call the doctor right now!"
Jack stopped, staring at me coldly. "No one is coming, Miss Zia. Mr. Noel is angry. Any service for you and your father will be stopped until you apologize to Miss Casey."
Anger and pain mixed together. My chest felt tight. I ran back into the room and quickly grabbed my phone. Remembering how important my father's life was, I no longer cared about my pride.
I pressed the call button for Noel repeatedly. But there was no answer. Finally, I tried contacting Casey and succeeded.
"Yes?" Casey's voice greeted me.
"I'm sorry, Casey. I—please tell Noel I'm sorry for you. Now let me call the doctor because my father had a heart attack!"
"Okay," she said, momentarily relieving me. "Noel, Zia says she doesn't want to take a taxi. Can you send a driver?"
My body froze.
Noel's voice immediately attacked me, full of anger. "Zia, don't talk to me today!"
"No, no. Noel, please—"
The call was abruptly disconnected.
I stared at my father, who was still trying to hold on. My heart was beating fast. Tears and despair wet my face.
"How did it go?" Jack asked, suddenly appearing at the door.
Before I could respond, I saw a tall man in a black leather jacket behind Jack. He stuck a thin needle into the back of Jack's neck, and Jack stiffened and collapsed unconscious instantly.
"It's a high-tech serum, enough to touch certain nerves to force the brain to shut down temporarily," he said lightly.
I stepped back in fear.
"Don't worry, Zia. I'm here to deal with your father now."
Chapter 2
ZIA
That man—Finn Albern Maxson. Noel's uncle, five years older than me. Noel's archrival in business, a figure who was always superior, faster, smarter. Noel hated him. And now, he was the one helping me.
With a wave of his hand, Finn let the man in the white coat enter.
"He's my best doctor. More skilled than anyone Noel has," he said calmly.
Seeing my father finally being treated professionally, my heart felt relieved. Tears welled up in the corners of my eyes as my father's breathing slowly returned to normal.
"His condition is stable. Let him rest," said the doctor.
I obeyed. It was time to talk to Finn. We walked to the hospital rooftop. The cold wind stung my face, but my mind was in turmoil.
"I thought you were joking all this time," I said softly, staring at him intently. Between relief and gratitude. "Admitting you loved me secretly for years... but today I really owe you my life."
A thin smile, half a smirk, appeared on his stern face. "Keep it short. Are you ready to leave that jerk Noel and build a new world with me?"
Just hearing Noel's name made my blood boil again. After what he did to my father—paralyzing him and nearly killing him just because of Casey—I already knew the answer.
"Yes," I said sharply. "Give me a week. I'll take care of my resignation letter as Noel's secretary. Then I'll leave quietly with my family, disappearing from his life before the wedding."
"The right choice." Finn laughed softly, satisfied. "Jack will lose his memory temporarily. My doctor will continue to treat your father, posing as a regular doctor. All done."
He slipped a small card into my bag. His personal number.
"Call me when everything is ready."
I could only stare at his sturdy back as he walked away, my fingers reflexively typing the number into my phone. Then, I immediately called the only employee I trusted.
"Amanda, prepare my resignation letter. Bring it to me as soon as possible."
There was a long pause. She was clearly shocked. "Yes, Miss Zia."
I hung up the phone and hurried back to my father's room. Seeing him still breathing was the greatest blessing of that night. Noel didn't call me—and for the first time, I realized I didn't even care anymore. My love for him had died.
—
The next day, my father was still weak. But he had recovered enough to be allowed to go home. I pushed his wheelchair into the house with a slightly lighter heart.
But my steps stopped abruptly at the doorway.
A disgusting sight met my eyes. Casey, scantily clad, sat arrogantly on the sofa with Noel. Meanwhile, my only sister, who was ten years old, was kneeling on the floor, massaging Casey's feet as if she were a queen.
My hands gripped the wheelchair tightly. "Who gave you permission to enter my house?!" My voice broke, hoarse with suppressed anger.
Seeing them dare to touch my family for the second time, my heart burned. I quickly approached, lifted Zea to her feet, and hugged her. My gaze pierced Noel and Casey.
"Well, Zia." Noel spoke lightly, as if I was the one in the wrong. "Why are you so angry? Casey just came to help me with the wedding preparations." His tone turned cold. "Because you're busy at the hospital. And you're really stubborn. No apology for Casey, instead you're acting spoiled."
He spoke again. "You're willing to spend more time at the hospital just because you don't want to take a taxi. You think it's all free?"
The veins in my neck tensed. After Noel's annoying accusations, I was too angry. Too disgusted to even look at them.
"Because you dared to touch my father and sister, forget about the wedding. Get out of my house right now."
Hearing my cold tone, his eyes turn darkened. His face tensed. "Zia, you should think before you speak. What would your life be without me? Where would your father get hospital treatment and—"
"Get out of my house!" My voice cut him off, exploding.
Casey glanced at my father's wheelchair, then smiled thinly—full of contempt. "Instead of kicking us out, you should take care of your father first. I heard... he has a history of heart disease."
My body tensed up.
Because I was angry at seeing my sister being trampled on, I forgot about my father. My priority should have been to keep my father's condition stable.
"Wait here for a moment," I whispered softly to my sister, Zea. After that, I immediately took my father to his room.
"Father, please don't think about anything for now." My voice trembled as I covered his body, trying to hold back my tears. I felt guilty for being careless. "I promise I will take care of everything. You don't need to worry. Just take care of your health."
My father nodded weakly. "I believe in you."
After giving my father his medicine and he fell asleep, I immediately went to the living room. Every step felt like it was burning. And there I saw a sight that made me almost vomit: Noel was hugging Casey tightly.
Both my hands clenched tightly. It was no longer out of jealousy—it was pure disgust. How dare they dirty my house!
As soon as he saw me, Noel immediately backed away with a panicked look on his face.
"Don't get the wrong idea, Zia." Casey spoke first. "We're just bestfriends. We've been doing this since we were kids. It should be fine, right?"
Noel nodded quickly. "Yes. I'm just calming Casey down. She's still traumatized from the harassment that almost happened yesterday."
Instead of paying attention, I was busy looking for Zea.
"I don't care," I said with a straight face. "But where is my sister now?"
Noel seemed offended by my statement. But rather than paying attention to his reaction, I preferred to search the entire room for Zea.
"Zea!"
Noel grabbed my hand before I could leave. Tightly. His gaze was unreadable. "Why have you become so cold and stubborn now that our wedding is approaching?"
Chapter 3
ZIA
"Are you sure you want to ask that? After everything you've done?" I laughed cynically, sarcastically. "You hurt my family for Casey!"
Noel's grip on my wrist tightened, making my veins feel like they were about to burst. "I told you not to be jealous of her. We're just bestfriends!"
For a moment, I was trapped in that gaze. Remembering the man who had once helped me escape the bitterness of the world when my father went bankrupt, who made me believe there was a safe place by his side—now standing in front of me with a cold stare. As if I were an enemy to be defeated.
Seeing my tears flow, Noel's gaze softened. So did his grip, which loosened.
"Zia, calm down. Everything will be fine. The wedding will still happen and—"
"What's that smell?" I cut him off sharply when my nose caught the pungent aroma. My eyes widened instantly. "Shrimp! Who dared to cook it here?"
"Casey really wanted to eat shrimp, so she asked your sister to cook it," he replied casually.
"Noel!" My voice broke. "You know my sister is allergic to shrimp. Just touching it gives her a rash, and you... you told her to cook it?!"
He fell silent.
I pushed him hard in the chest. My breath was ragged. Quickly, I turned and left him, heading for the kitchen.
When I got there, my heart almost stopped.
Zea was standing near the table, her hands covered in red rashes. The little girl's face was pale, her eyes wet. "Sis..." her voice trembled. "I didn't want to, but Casey forced me. She said if I didn't obey, Dad wouldn't be able to go to the hospital for treatment anymore."
My body shook violently. I immediately grabbed Zea and pulled her into my arms. "Oh my God, Zea..." my voice broke, full of guilt. "Don't listen to her anymore, she's a liar."
Noel entered the kitchen a few seconds later. He looked at the rash on my sister's hand, then took a deep breath. "I forgot that Zea is allergic to shrimp," he said flatly. "I just feel sorry for Casey. She hasn't had an appetite since she felt guilty about your father. I thought—"
"You thought?!" my voice screeched, almost out of control. I stared at him with anger I could no longer contain. "Noel, you can't justify everything with Casey! You saw yourself how Zea suffered because of your negligence. What did she do wrong? She's just a child!"
His face stiff. "I'll pay all of Zea's hospital bills."
I froze for a moment, then looked at him with disgust. "You always think that way. As if money can fix everything. Not everything can be solved with money, Noel! My sister is innocent. She has nothing to do with you, let alone Casey! All this time, I've been supporting her with my own sweat as your secretary, and you've ruined everything!"
I couldn't bear to look at his face anymore. Quickly, I lifted Zea's body, held her tightly, and rushed out.
"Noel, don't come!" I snapped when I heard his footsteps behind me.
"But you can't drive in such a panicked state. Let me take you," he replied quickly.
I gritted my teeth. Part of me wanted to reject him completely. But I saw Zea starting to weaken in my arms, her hands trembling with a rash that was getting worse. I had no choice.
With my jaw clenched, I continued walking towards the car. Noel opened the back door, and with a heavy heart, I got in.
On the way to the hospital, my tears fell incessantly. Everything had been falling apart lately.
"Zia," Noel's voice came from the front, calm but threatening, "I'm sorry. But consider this a warning. You're too jealous of Casey, too bold in talking about canceling our wedding. Don't do it again if you want your life and your family to remain peaceful."
My hands clenched tightly. But I ignored everything. Instead, the plan in my head was going perfectly. I would leave him soon!
As soon as Noel carried Zea to the hospital room, I ran to the lobby to meet Amanda.
"Miss Zia, everything is ready. You just need Mr. Noel's signature and your employment contract will be terminated."
I quickly accepted the resignation letter. "Thank you."
Before Amanda left, Noel's voice came from behind. "Zia?"
I turned around. I tried to stay calm and put on a straight face.
He approached me. He read my expression for a moment. When he didn't find anything strange, his suspicion immediately disappeared.
"Why did she come?" he said, looking at Amanda, who was smiling professionally.
"It's about your company’s business" I said briefly.
He just nodded. "I have to go see the decorated building as soon as possible," he said, glancing at his watch.
My eyes widened. "What?"
He smiled thinly. "The wedding will be moved up to the day after tomorrow. To avoid your indecisiveness. I don't want you to change your mind again."
He was really cunning!
I had intended to take care of this signature when conditions allowed. But because of this, I was forced to act more quickly.
"Oh, in that case, you have to sign this business document first." Holding my breath, I tried to act normal.
He glanced at the document I handed him. "What's this? Ignore it for now, I have to go see the decorations."
I swallowed hard. I wanted everything to work out. "Noel, this has to be signed. It says—"
My words stopped when he took his pen and signed quickly. His face looked annoyed. "There, satisfied?"
I pulled the document back. My heart was relieved to see him walk away. I looked at Amanda triumphantly.
"Keep it with you. After I give you instructions, you can put it on Noel's private desk."
"Understood."
As I stepped back into the hospital to check on Zea, my cell phone rang. My brow furrowed at the unfamiliar number.
A video came in. I opened it quickly. My eyes widened as I saw Casey filming herself entering my father's room.
Her hand deliberately showed the camera, pulling my father's blanket and pushing his wheelchair until it crashed into the table. My father fell halfway off the bed, his face contorted in pain.
I staggered. My breath caught in my throat. Without thinking, I ordered a taxi, then called Finn. "Please take care of Zea at the hospital. I have something to take care of," I said hurriedly.
As soon as I arrived home, I immediately pushed open my father's bedroom door. The sight made my heart sink. My father was tied up, his body slumped in his wheelchair.
I ran, wanting to free him. But a rough hand pulled me from behind, dragging me until I fell. Instantly, my wrists were tied, my mouth covered with duct tape.
"I'm sick of seeing you in Noel's life for two years," Casey's voice was clear, cynical and disgusting. "Now let me show you something."
My father was pulled under the bed by Casey's men. I was also dragged there, our bodies pinned down in the cold darkness. I struggled, but the bonds were too strong.
