Chapter 1 of He Chose Power, I Chose Freedom

The entire room had gathered to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary.

As Mrs. Thompson, I stood beside my husband, Sebastian Thompson, the billionaire everyone admired and no one ever truly knew. In his perfectly tailored black suit, with that cold, beautiful face and the effortless authority that made people straighten when he walked by, he looked exactly the way the world saw him—untouchable, powerful, flawless.

“Mrs. Thompson, you look stunning tonight,” one of the investors’ wives said with a bright smile.

Sebastian slipped an arm around my waist, his touch light but possessive, as if he still had every right to claim me.

“She always does,” he said smoothly, his voice warm enough to make the room soften around us.

A few people laughed. Others lifted their glasses. Someone nearby murmured that Sebastian Thompson still looked at his wife like she was the center of his universe.

Then he leaned down and kissed my temple, painting the perfect picture of a devoted husband in front of everyone.

And all I could think about was how badly I wanted to rip that picture apart.

Because I knew the truth.

Earlier that afternoon, I had gone into his private office to leave the cufflinks I’d bought him for our anniversary. I wasn’t snooping. I never had to. When you love someone long enough, you notice the things they think they’ve hidden well.

That was when I found the velvet box tucked inside the bottom drawer of his desk.

My hands went cold the second I opened it.

Inside was a diamond-and-ruby necklace so breathtaking it stole my breath for all the wrong reasons. Not just because it was beautiful, but because it felt personal. Rubies had always been my favorite. Sebastian knew that. He also knew I had stopped wearing them years ago because once, a long time back, he told me red was too bold, too dramatic, too much on a woman like me.

He had never bought me rubies.

Not once.

Beneath the necklace was a handwritten note.

To my dearest love, Colette.

Colette Mercer.

His executive assistant. The woman he had sworn was nothing. The woman whose name had followed us like a shadow for nearly a year.

I had suspected it for months. The late-night meetings that somehow never ended at the office. The calls he took in private. The way Colette smiled at him like she already knew something I didn’t. The way Sebastian had stopped touching me when no one was looking.

But that note?

That note left no room for lies.

“Serena.”

His voice pulled me back to the present. I looked up and found him watching me, one hand extended toward me.

In it was a small black box.

“Happy anniversary.”

The crowd immediately broke into applause. Glasses lifted. Cameras flashed. Every face in the ballroom turned toward us beneath the golden light of the hotel chandeliers.

I opened the box carefully.

Inside was a sapphire necklace.

The stones were deep blue, elegant, expensive—and completely wrong.

A soft murmur moved through the room.

“It’s gorgeous.”

“What a gift.”

“He has impeccable taste.”

Sebastian smiled as though he had just handed me the stars. “Beautiful, isn’t it?”

I looked down at the necklace, then back at the man who had spent the afternoon buying rubies for his mistress and the evening offering me sapphires like they were enough.

“It’s lovely,” I said quietly.

And everyone smiled, believing they had just witnessed another perfect moment in a perfect marriage.

No one saw the way my nails bit into my palm.

No one noticed how hard it was to breathe.

The music swelled again. More champagne was poured. People toasted to love, legacy, and lasting partnerships—the usual polished lies wrapped in crystal and candlelight. Sebastian stayed close, playing his role without a flaw. He touched my back when people were watching. Pulled out my chair. Kissed my hand like I was still the woman who mattered most.

To everyone else, we were the golden couple.

The billionaire king and his perfect wife.

But wives always know when the fairytale is rotting from the inside.

Later that evening, while Sebastian entertained a group of board members and business partners, I saw her.

Colette stood near the bar in a red silk dress that skimmed her body like a secret she wanted everyone to notice. Diamonds glittered at her throat, but not the ones he had bought her. Not tonight. Tonight, she wanted me to know she didn’t need proof. She could afford patience.

When our eyes met, her lips curved into a slow, knowing smile.

Then she lifted her champagne glass toward me as if we were sharing a joke.

And then Sebastian looked at her.

It lasted only a second. Barely anything.

But I saw it.

And worse, so did she.

A few minutes later, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced at it, then leaned down, his mouth brushing close to my ear.

“Excuse me for a moment,” he murmured. “There’s something I need to handle.”

Of course there was.

I smiled up at him with perfect grace. “Take your time.”

He kissed my cheek and disappeared into the crowd, moving through the ballroom with the quiet confidence of a man used to having every door open for him.

I stood there alone, still smiling as guests drifted toward me.

“You and Sebastian are relationship goals,” one woman sighed.

“You two seem stronger than ever,” another added.

I nearly laughed.

Instead, I thanked them and took another sip of champagne, letting the bubbles burn down my throat.

Then my phone vibrated inside my clutch.

I looked down.

A message from an unknown number.

No, not unknown.

Unwanted.

Colette:

The sapphires are pretty. But we both know who he buys rubies for.

My stomach turned to ice.

A photo followed.

Sebastian stood in one of the private hallways outside the ballroom, half-shadowed by warm light. Colette was standing close to him, his hand resting at the small of her back, his head bent toward her as though whatever she was saying mattered more than the wife he had just left in a room full of people.

It wasn’t even the intimacy that hurt the most.

It was how familiar he looked.

Relaxed. Unreadable. Real.

A version of him I hadn’t seen in a very long time.

For one reckless second, I wanted to march down that hallway, throw the phone in his face, and ask him to deny it in front of everyone.

But I didn’t.

There is a kind of dignity women learn when love starts humiliating them. A silence sharp enough to cut.

So I lifted my chin, locked my phone, and walked back into the party like my heart wasn’t breaking under my skin.

When Sebastian returned twenty minutes later, not a hair out of place, he wore the same calm expression he used in every meeting, every interview, every public appearance.

“One of the overseas accounts hit a delay,” he said. “I had to deal with it.”

Naturally.

I met his eyes and smiled. “You’re always dealing with something.”

His gaze stayed on me for a second too long, as though he was testing whether I meant more than the words.

If he noticed anything, he didn’t show it.

By the end of the night, he escorted me upstairs himself, one hand firm at my waist as if I still belonged to him. As if this was still our marriage. As if he hadn’t just humiliated me in the shadows while the entire room toasted our love in the light.

“You did well tonight,” he said once we reached our suite. “You represented us exactly the way you should.”

I turned and looked at him.

Represented.

That was what I was now. Not his wife. Not his partner. Not the woman who had stood beside him through every launch, every scandal, every brutal climb to the top.

Just a symbol.

A beautiful piece of the brand.

A woman in couture standing beside a man who no longer loved her.

“The board trusts what they see,” he continued, loosening his cufflinks. “They see stability when they look at us.”

Us.

The word tasted bitter.

He stepped closer and brushed a strand of hair away from my face, his fingers grazing my cheek with a tenderness that might have shattered me once.

“I’ll be back later,” he said. “There’s one last thing I need to take care of.”

I didn’t ask where he was going.

I already knew.

So I only nodded.

He left without another word.

The bedroom door clicked shut behind him.

Silence rushed in.

For a long moment, I stood there in the middle of our suite, surrounded by designer furniture, fresh flowers, and five years of carefully dressed lies. Then I reached up, unclasped the sapphire necklace, and let it fall onto the bed.

The blue stones gleamed against the silk comforter like a mockery.

Not a gift.

A substitute.

I stared at it, then at my reflection in the mirror across the room.

Perfect hair. Perfect gown. Perfect billionaire’s wife.

But my eyes were no longer soft.

They were sharp. Awake. Furious.

Sebastian thought I would keep wearing the jewels, smiling for the cameras, and pretending not to see what he did behind closed doors.

He thought loyalty meant I would stay.

He thought humiliation would wound me deeply enough to make me obedient.

He was wrong.

Because if Sebastian Thompson wanted to give his heart, his secrets, and his weakness to another woman, then he could keep all of it.

I was done being the wife he displayed in public while dishonoring me in private.

And if walking away meant choosing my brother, leaving the empire we built behind, and letting him watch it all slip through his hands—

Then so be it.

Let Sebastian keep his towers, his money, his power, and his perfect image.

I was done.

And this time, I wasn’t looking back.
