Chapter 1 of He Chose His Mistress While I Saved His Father

"Seven years," I told the empty kitchen. "You can show up for one night, Nathan."

It was Christmas Eve. The turkey sat on the counter, golden and steaming. I had hung the evergreen wreath on the front door that morning. I had set two plates on the table, two wine glasses, two folded napkins. I had even lit the cedar candle he loved, the one that used to fill our tiny apartment back when he would race home just to kiss me before dinner.

Outside, the snow came down harder. Boston's suburbs went white and quiet.

At eight, I called him.

It rang out.

At nine, I tried again.

"Hi, you've reached Nathan Cole. Leave a message."

I didn't. I just stared at the gravy as it grew a thin, wrinkled skin.

At ten-thirty, I dialed a third time. Before it could ring, my phone buzzed.

*Client dinner. Don't wait up.*

Four words. No name. No "sorry."

I laughed. It came out short and ugly, and I covered my mouth with my hand.

"Of course," I said. "Of course it is."

I picked up his plate and carried it back to the cabinet. The glass clinked against the others, too loud in the silence.

Then I did the stupid thing. I sat on the couch and opened Instagram.

Sabrina Vale was the first post on my feed. Lifestyle blogger, twenty-four, all glossy hair and soft filters. Nathan had mentioned her once, months ago, like she was nobody.

Her photo showed Christmas lights along the waterfront, their gold reflections trembling on the black water. The caption read: *Some men remember all your little wishes. Even on Christmas Eve, he makes sure I'm never alone.*

I almost scrolled past.

Then I saw the wrist.

A man's hand rested on her shoulder. On it sat a silver watch with a deep blue face. I knew that watch. I had stood beside Nathan in the store the day he bought it.

And wrapped around Sabrina's neck was a charcoal cashmere scarf.

My scarf.

Nathan gave it to me last Christmas. In March, he told me he'd lost it at the office.

I zoomed in until the picture blurred. My thumb was shaking.

Under the post, someone had commented: *Wait, who's the guy? Boyfriend or brother??*

Sabrina had replied with a little star emoji. *Someone who will always come running for me.*

I set the phone face down on the cushion and sat very still.

---

The front door opened at three-thirty in the morning.

Nathan came in smelling of whiskey and cold air. He didn't take off his shoes. He tossed an envelope on the dining table and loosened his tie.

"You're still up," he said.

"I am."

"Here." He tapped the envelope. "Your Christmas present. And, you know. To make up for tonight."

I opened it. Cash. A few hundred dollars. Folded behind the bills was a receipt from Lumière, the kind of restaurant where you need a reservation three months out.

Two entrées. One bottle of champagne. One dessert.

I looked up at him.

"Were the Christmas lights pretty?"

His hand froze on his tie. For one second, his face went blank, like a screen with no signal.

Then he sighed, loud and tired.

"Seriously, Hannah? You're going through Sabrina's page now?"

"It was on my feed."

"She's a family friend's daughter. I've told you that." He yanked the tie off and threw it over a chair. "She just got back from Europe. She doesn't know anybody in Boston. She's alone on Christmas Eve. What was I supposed to do, ignore her?"

"You told me it was a client dinner."

"It was. Then I stopped by to check on her. She's like a little sister to me."

He stepped closer. That was when I smelled it. Not cedar. Not his cologne. Something sweet and floral, clinging to the shoulder of his coat.

He set a small white box on the table. "Brought you something. Dessert."

He flipped the lid open. A tiny pink cake with a gold leaf on top.

My stomach rolled.

I knew that cake. Sabrina had posted it five times this month. *My signature treat,* she called it.

I turned my face away and pressed the back of my wrist against my lips.

"What?" Nathan frowned. "You love sweets."

"Close it. Please."

He shut the box hard. "Unbelievable. I bring you something nice, and you act like I poisoned you."

He reached for me then, arms looping around my waist from behind. His chin landed on my shoulder, heavy and lazy.

"Come on," he murmured. "Don't do this. I'll make it up to you. We'll do a real holiday later. Okay?"

"Later," I repeated.

"Yeah. Later."

I turned in his arms and met his eyes. "Then let's have Christmas breakfast in a few hours. Just us. Pancakes. Nowhere to be."

His brows pulled together. His arms dropped.

"Hannah, I've been working nonstop. I'm exhausted." He rubbed his eyes. "Why do you always do this? Every time I'm drained, you pile on more. Can't you just give me one night without drama?"

I didn't answer.

He waited a moment, then shook his head and walked upstairs. The bedroom door shut.

I stood in the dining room with a cold turkey, a pink cake, and an envelope of money.

I didn't cry. That surprised me most of all.

---

I went into the study and opened my laptop.

"Okay, Sabrina," I whispered. "Show me."

I scrolled back. September. October. November. December.

October twelfth. A private box at a Bruins game. A man's sleeve in the corner of the frame. Nathan had told me he was in Chicago that weekend.

November third. A fall market downtown. Two mugs of cider, one held by a hand wearing that watch. Nathan had called it an emergency board meeting.

November twenty-ninth. The lake at night, sparklers in the snow. *A business trip,* he'd said.

December fifteenth. A jewelry store on Newbury Street. Sabrina holding up a velvet box. *Spoiled again,* the caption said, with a wink.

I wrote down every date. My handwriting got smaller and sharper with each line.

Around five, I crept upstairs. Nathan was snoring. His phone lay on the nightstand, glowing with a new message.

I picked it up. The preview read: *Little Star: Home safe? Miss you already ✨*

Little Star.

My hand went cold. I opened his contacts and typed my own number.

The name that came up wasn't *Hannah*. It wasn't *Wife*. It wasn't even the silly *Hannah Banana* he used to call me when we were twenty-three.

It just said: *Home.*

Like a place. Like somewhere you leave in the morning and forget about until you need to sleep.

I put the phone back exactly where it had been.

---

At dawn, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror.

The woman staring back was thirty. Pale. Dark circles. A faded sweater with a gravy stain near the cuff.

"He has time," I said to her quietly. "He has plenty of time. Just not for you."

She didn't argue.

I picked up my phone one last time. Sabrina had posted again, twelve minutes ago.

A close-up of her hand on a café table, a latte beside it. *Christmas morning, new treasures,* she wrote.

On her wrist was a gold bracelet. Thin, old, engraved with tiny ivy leaves twisting around the band.

I stopped breathing.

I had seen that bracelet exactly once, on Nathan's grandmother's wrist, the night before our wedding. She'd held my hands and said, *This goes to the woman who carries the Cole name. One day it will be yours, sweetheart.*

Nathan told me it was locked in his mother's safe.

I stared at the screen until it dimmed.

"What else did you give her, Nathan?" I whispered. "What else did you take from me?"
