Chapter 1 of HE BURIED MY SON SO I BURIED HIS EMPIRE

I was holding my son's hand when he died.

Not his father.

Me.

Noah took his last breath at 6:43 in the morning while rain ran down the hospital window in thin crooked lines. I had been watching that window all night. I used to tell Noah that rain on glass looked like little rivers, and he would press his face against the window and breathe fog onto it and draw stars with his finger. He was obsessed with stars. He was four years old and he already knew the names of seven constellations and he would list them before bed like a prayer.

I sat beside him and I held his hand and I talked to him while the monitors beeped and the night nurses moved quietly in the hallway. I told him about the beach house I had found online, the one with the yellow door. I told him about Biscuit, the golden dog we had picked a name for, the one we were going to get when he was better. I told him the stars would still be there when he woke up, that I had written down all seven names in a notebook so we could find them together from the window of that yellow-doored house.

I talked until there was nothing left to say.

And then I just held his hand.

At 6:43, the monitor flatlined.

And my son was gone.

I had called my husband, Victor, three times.

Two in the morning when Noah's oxygen dropped. Voicemail. I left a message with a steady voice.

Four in the morning when the doctors grew worried. He picked up, said he was on his way. He did not come.

6:15. Twenty minutes before the end. Voicemail again. I stood in the corridor listening to his recorded voice and thought, quietly: this is the last time I beg this man for anything.

I went back inside and sat with my son and did not leave his side.

After the nurses came and the doctors came and the room filled with the quiet, careful movement of people doing their jobs, I stood up.

My legs were stiff. My eyes were dry. I put the small hospital bracelet the nurse had given me at admission onto my own wrist. Noah Thomas Hale. DOB: March 4.

I was not going to fall apart in an empty room alone.

I was going to find my husband.

Victor had an executive suite on the fourth floor during Noah's longer hospital stays. Close, he always said. I want to be close in case anything happens.

I took the elevator up.

The corridor was quiet, lights low, offices dark. Victor's suite was at the end of the hall. The door was not fully closed. I could hear music from inside, low and soft, the kind you put on when you don't want to be overheard.

I raised my hand to knock. Then I heard it.

A woman's laugh. Soft. Familiar.

My hand stopped in midair.

I knew that laugh the way I knew my own reflection. Eleven years of friendship. Eleven years of phone calls and inside jokes and 2am conversations about everything and nothing. I would have known that laugh in a crowded room, in the dark, half asleep. I would have known it anywhere.

Brenda.

I told myself I was wrong. I told myself I was exhausted and destroyed and hearing things. I pressed my palm flat against the door.

And I pushed. Just an inch. Just enough.

Brenda's dress was on the floor.

Victor's back was to me but I knew every line of him. The set of his shoulders. The tilt of his head. The sound of his breathing that I had slept beside for seven years.

On the desk behind them, two champagne flutes caught the early light.

Champagne.

At seven in the morning.

My son had been dead for less than an hour.

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

Every part of me wanted to push that door open and destroy the both of them. I wanted to scream until the walls shook. I wanted to throw those champagne glasses against the wall and watch them shatter into a hundred pieces that would take years to find.

I did none of those things.

I reached into my pocket.

My phone was already in my hand. My fingers moved on their own. Camera. Video. I pressed the phone against the doorframe to hold it steady because my hands were shaking too badly to hold it in the air.

I pressed record.

I recorded all of it. The room. The glasses. The couch. Victor's jacket on the back of the chair. His wedding ring, the one I had placed on his finger seven years ago, was sitting on the edge of the desk. Removed. Set aside. Like something he had simply forgotten he was wearing.

I recorded until I had enough.

Then I stopped.

I stepped back from the door.

I walked back down the corridor, into the elevator, down to the ground floor. I went to the family bathroom at the end of the hall and I locked the door and I stood over the sink and looked at myself in the mirror.

My eyes were dry.

I reached into my coat pocket.

The pregnancy test had been there for four days. I had been carrying it and not taking it because I was afraid of one more thing to feel. One more thing that could break me before I was ready to be broken.

I took it now. I sat on the cold floor. Two lines.

I stared at them for a long time.

Then I pressed both hands flat against my stomach, against this small quiet thing that existed and did not yet know what kind of world it had been made in.

Victor did not know.

He would not know. Not yet.

I got up. I washed my face. I went back to Noah's room and I sat in the chair beside his empty bed and I waited.

An hour later Victor's footsteps appeared in the corridor.

He walked in. He saw the empty bed. He saw me.

Something crossed his face before the grief arrived. Something fast and small that I almost missed.

It looked like relief. I filed it away.

"Sarah," he said softly. "Where is he?"

I looked up at my husband. I thought about the champagne glasses. I thought about the wedding ring on the desk. I thought about the life inside me that he knew nothing about.

"He's gone, Victor," I said quietly.

He crossed the room and crouched in front of me and took my hands in his and looked into my eyes with an expression that looked exactly like love.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry I wasn't here."

I looked back at him. "It's okay," I said softly.

It was not okay.

But he didn't need to know that yet.
