Chapter 1

"Look at that, Mrs. Vance. Two strong heartbeats." The doctor pointed a gloved finger at the flickering gray monitor.

Before I could form a response, the heavy wooden door slammed against the wall.

A rush of frigid hallway air swept in, carrying the unmistakable, cloying scent of Tom Ford cologne.

"Get in here," Julian laughed, a cruel, triumphant sound, as his fingers dug into Chloe's wrist. He dragged her over the threshold.

She dug her heels into the white linoleum, tears streaking her flushed cheeks. "Julian, stop! You're hurting me! I told you I don't want to do this!"

"We're getting the proof right now," he said, his smile wide and arrogant. "You're going to show me that this kid is mine."

Then his eyes shifted. He froze.

The smile collapsed off my husband's face, replaced by a sickly pale mask of absolute horror.

He stared at me. I sat on the examination table, my shirt lifted, the cold ultrasound gel smeared across my bare stomach. Then his gaze flicked to the monitor, where two tiny shapes pulsed in the dark.

"Serena," Julian choked out. His fingers loosened their iron hold on Chloe. "What... what are you doing here?"

I grabbed a handful of paper towels and wiped the gel from my skin. "Having my scheduled twelve-week checkup. The one you said you were too busy at the office to attend."

The doctor, completely oblivious to the sudden tension suffocating the room, adjusted her glasses and scooped up the crumpled appointment slip Julian had dropped on the counter during his entrance.

"Ah, you must be the walk-in DNA appointment," she said brightly, scanning the wrinkled paper. "Let's see. Chloe Miller. Fetal DNA match request... Oh, the results from the rush lab are already attached to your file in the system."

Chloe let out a strangled sob and covered her face with both hands.

"Wait," Julian commanded, stepping toward the doctor. "Don't read that out loud."

"It says the genetic match is confirmed," the doctor continued, squinting at the glowing tablet in her hand. "The father is listed as Dominic Russo."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Dominic Russo. Julian's absolute worst enemy. The man who had been trying to bankrupt his firm for three years.

Julian staggered back. His jaw dropped. He looked at Chloe, then at me, then back at the tablet in the doctor's hand.

"You slept with Dominic?" Julian screamed, lunging at Chloe. "You told me this was my kid! You made me pay for your apartment! You made me buy you that car!"

"He promised me he would leave his wife!" Chloe cried, shrinking against the wall. "You never promised me anything, Julian! You just kept saying you needed Serena's money!"

I swung my legs off the table. My bare feet hit the cold floor.

"Serena, please," Julian stammered, spinning back to face me. He reached out, his hands trembling violently. "It's not what it looks like. I was just—"

I yanked the ultrasound probe off its cradle. The cord clattered loudly against the plastic machine.

My hand swung in a high, vicious arc.

The crack of my palm against his cheek echoed like a gunshot.

His head snapped to the side. A bright red handprint bloomed instantly across his jaw.

"You brought your pregnant mistress to my doctor," I said, keeping my voice eerily calm. "And you didn't even know whose bastard she was carrying."

Julian's knees hit the floor tiles with a heavy thud.

"I'm sorry," he whimpered, grabbing the hem of my silk blouse. "Serena, I swear I'm sorry. She meant nothing. It was a mistake. You have to believe me."

He clawed at my legs, his expensive tailored suit wrinkling against the sterile floor. "We're having twins? Serena, we're having a family. Please, don't throw us away over this. I love you."

"Get your hands off me." I kicked my leg back, breaking his grip.

The commotion had drawn an audience. The clinic hallway was suddenly packed.

Nurses, patients, and passing strangers clustered around the open doorway, their eyes wide with morbid curiosity.

"Look at her," a woman in a beige trench coat whispered loudly, pointing a manicured finger at me. "Causing a scene in a maternity ward."

"Poor guy is begging on his knees," an older man muttered, shaking his head. "Women these days have no class. She should handle her marital issues at home."

"Slapping him like that? Total psycho behavior. No wonder he cheated," a teenage girl snickered, holding up her phone to record the spectacle.

My knuckles turned stark white as I gripped the edge of the examination table. My fingernails dug into the vinyl padding.

I was the betrayed wife. I was the one pregnant with his twins, standing half-naked in a clinic while my husband paraded his infidelity in front of me.

Yet they looked at me like I was the villain. Like my lack of a polite, suffering smile made me the monster.

A bitter laugh scraped the back of my throat.

Chloe sniffled loudly, playing the victim perfectly as she huddled against the wall. "I'm so sorry, Mrs. Vance. I never meant to ruin your marriage. He told me you two were separated."

The crowd murmured in sympathy for the crying girl.

Julian looked up at me, sensing the shift in the room's energy. A desperate, calculating gleam returned to his eyes.

"See?" he whispered, lowering his voice so only I could hear. "Don't make this uglier than it has to be, Serena. Everyone is watching. Let's go home. You need me to keep the Vance board happy anyway. If you divorce me now, the stock will tank."

He thought he still had leverage. He thought my family's pristine public image would force me to swallow this humiliation and play the dutiful, forgiving wife. He thought I cared about the whispers of a dozen strangers more than my own dignity.

I stepped around him, ignoring the burning stares from the hallway.

I walked over to the chair where I had left my clothes and picked up my black leather Birkin bag.

"Serena?" Julian asked, scrambling to his feet. He dusted off his knees, a smug smirk threatening to break through his panic. "Are we leaving?"

I unclasped the gold hardware.

My hand bypassed my wallet and keys, wrapping around a thick stack of folded parchment.

I pulled out the document. Stamped in the top right corner was the crimson wax seal of the Vance family—an emblem of absolute, untouchable authority.

I turned on my heel and slapped the asset freezing order directly against his chest.

The heavy paper fluttered down, landing right over his polished leather shoes.

I tilted my head, letting a cold, razor-sharp smile stretch across my lips.

"Did you think I didn't know?"

Chapter 2

"Did you think I would still let you manipulate me?" I asked, my voice slicing through the heavy silence of the examination room.

Julian stared at the freezing order resting on his expensive shoes. The arrogant flush drained entirely from his face, leaving him a sickening shade of gray.

"Serena, wait," he pleaded. His hands reached out, hovering inches from my coat. "You can't do this. The board will panic. The stock will plummet. You are ruining everything over a misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding?" I repeated, stepping closer. I forced him to look at me. "You brought her to my clinic. You forged a DNA test to blame your biggest rival. You used my family's money to buy her silence."

"I did it to protect us!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking. He pointed a shaking finger at the ultrasound machine. "We are having twins! You are going to rip our family apart over one mistake?"

"You ripped it apart the second you unzipped your pants," I said.

Chloe sniffled from the corner. "Julian, please... my stomach hurts."

Julian flinched, torn between his pregnant wife and his pregnant mistress. That split second of hesitation was all the closure I needed.

I turned my back to him. The crowd of onlookers parted instantly. A few people kept their phones raised, recording my exit, but I kept my gaze locked straight ahead. My stilettos struck the linoleum floor with sharp, heavy thuds.

"I'll fight you for everything!" Julian screamed down the corridor. "You hear me? You won't get a dime of the liquid assets! I'll freeze you out before you even reach your car!"

"Talk to my lawyers," I tossed over my shoulder.

The elevator doors sealed away his frantic shouting. I descended to the underground parking structure. The concrete cavern was freezing. A bitter gust of wind whipped through the open ramp, cutting straight through my thin beige trench coat. I wrapped my arms around my waist.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out. It was Elias, my lead attorney.

"It's done," Elias said through the receiver, his tone strictly professional. "The judge signed the freezing order. Julian's access to the joint accounts is locked. But Serena, this locks your access to the operational cash flow too. The board is going to demand a liquidity check by tomorrow morning."

"I know," I said, walking faster toward my designated parking spot.

"If you don't show ten million in liquid capital by the eight o'clock emergency meeting, Julian's faction will vote to remove you as CEO. He planned this. He drained the secondary accounts."

"I will find the money, Elias."

"Where? No bank will approve a loan overnight with a pending divorce and frozen assets."

"I said I'll handle it," I snapped, ending the call.

The adrenaline from the clinic was fading, leaving a hollow ache in my chest. Two babies. A cheating husband. A corporate coup.

I needed to get to my car.

Before I could press the unlock button on my key fob, the roar of an engine bounced off the concrete pillars.

A matte-black Maybach tore around the corner. It braked hard, stopping precisely inches from my toes. The heavy tires hit a stagnant puddle of dirty water, splashing a cold spray against the hem of my coat.

I stepped back, my jaw tightening. "Watch where you're driving."

The tinted passenger window glided down with a soft mechanical hum.

The air trapped in my throat.

Dominic Russo sat in the driver's seat. The dim fluorescent lighting of the garage cast sharp shadows across his angular jaw and straight nose. He radiated a lethal, suffocating stillness. This was the man trying to destroy my family's empire. The man Julian just accused of fathering his mistress's child.

He didn't look at me right away. His gaze remained fixed on the concrete wall ahead.

"Get in, Mrs. Vance," Dominic commanded. His voice was a low, rough rasp that vibrated in the damp air.

I crossed my arms, refusing to move. "Why would I get into a car with the man actively trying to bankrupt my company?"

Dominic finally turned his head. His dark eyes locked onto mine, stripping away my defenses. "Because standing in a freezing garage won't solve your liquidity problem."

"I don't have a liquidity problem," I lied, keeping my chin high.

"Elias is a good lawyer, but he talks too loud on the phone," Dominic said.

My nails dug into the leather of my Birkin bag. "You were listening to my calls?"

"I don't need to listen to your calls to know Julian drained the secondary accounts," Dominic replied. "I'm the one who cornered his offshore investments last week. He's broke. And now, thanks to your freezing order, so are you."

"I can secure a loan by morning," I shot back.

"No bank will approve a loan overnight with a pending divorce and frozen assets," Dominic countered. "Julian knows this. He set a trap. If you don't show ten million in liquid capital by the eight o'clock emergency meeting, his faction will vote to remove you as CEO."

My stomach dropped. Dominic knew the inner workings of my board better than I did.

"Get to the point, Dominic."

He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, matte-black credit card. He extended his arm through the open window, trapping the plastic between his index and middle finger.

"Ten million dollars," Dominic said. "No limit beyond that. Unrestricted access."

I stared at the black card. The gold lettering caught the dim garage lights.

"Consider it a hostile takeover of your immediate problems," he added.

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "You expect me to believe Dominic Russo is offering me charity? In a parking garage?"

"I don't do charity," he replied, his expression entirely unreadable. "I do investments. Julian is weak. You are not. I prefer dealing with the competent Vance."

"If I take that," I said, stepping closer to the vehicle, "what do you want in return?"

"Your cooperation," Dominic answered smoothly. "Julian thinks he can leverage your family's reputation to keep his seat on the board. We are going to crush him from both sides."

"And the DNA test upstairs?" I asked, testing him. "The one that says you fathered Chloe's baby?"

Dominic's jaw clenched. A muscle feathered in his cheek. "Julian forged those lab results to frame me. He needed a scapegoat for his mistress. I came here to handle it."

"By throwing money at me?"

"By giving you the weapon you need to destroy him at the board meeting tomorrow," Dominic corrected. "Take the card, Serena."

He used my first name. The familiarity felt like a spark in the freezing garage.

I reached out. The smooth plastic of the card brushed against my fingertips.

Before I could snatch the card from his grip, a heavy metallic clunk echoed through the damp air.

The rear passenger door of the Maybach swung open from the inside.

I stepped back, my eyes darting to the shadowed backseat.

Chloe Miller sat against the plush leather, her hands trembling in her lap and her eyes rimmed with angry red tears.

Chapter 3

"You orchestrated this entire thing," I said, my voice echoing off the concrete walls of the parking garage.

I stared past Dominic, fixing my gaze on the weeping girl in his backseat. Chloe shrank against the leather, wrapping her arms around her stomach.

"Get in the car, Serena," Dominic repeated. His hand still extended the black credit card.

"You paid Julian to forge that DNA test," I fired back, refusing to move a single inch. "You cornered his investments, drained his accounts, and then drove his mistress here just to trap me."

"I do not pay for forgeries," Dominic answered. He tapped the plastic edge of the card against the steering wheel. "Julian did that on his own. He panicked when he realized I bought up his debt. He needed a scapegoat."

"And you just happened to find his mistress and bring her to my doctor's appointment?" I asked.

"I track my investments," Dominic said, his tone entirely flat. "Chloe was a liability to his portfolio. I picked her up at the airport trying to flee the state. Now, are you going to stand in a puddle, or are we going to do business?"

I yanked the passenger door open and slid onto the leather seat. The heavy door slammed shut, sealing us inside.

The Maybach surged forward. The silence inside the cabin was absolute, save for Chloe's muffled sniffles from the back.

"Stop crying," I commanded, staring straight through the windshield.

Chloe choked on a sob. "Mrs. Vance, I swear I didn't know he was setting you up today. He just told me to wait in the car."

"You slept with my husband," I said, keeping my voice dangerously low. "You lived in an apartment paid for by my family's money. Do not speak to me."

Chloe shrank further into the shadows of the backseat.

"Drop her off," I told Dominic.

"Already handled," he replied.

He pulled the car out of the garage and merged onto the highway. Ten minutes later, he parked outside a sterile, high-end hotel downtown.

"Get out," Dominic ordered the girl.

Chloe scrambled out of the car like a frightened animal, fleeing through the glass revolving doors without a single backward glance.

Forty minutes after that, massive iron gates loomed in the darkness.

"Sterling Manor," I noted, reading the wrought-iron crest illuminated by the headlights. "I thought the Russo family operated out of the city."

"Russo is a business name," he answered, cutting the engine. "Sterling is my blood. And right now, you need blood."

We entered a cavernous study. Cold marble floors stretched wall to wall, chilling the air. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the perimeter, filled with leather-bound volumes that smelled of old paper and expensive cigars.

"Sit," he instructed, pointing to a high-backed leather chair opposite a massive mahogany desk.

I remained standing. "I have an emergency board meeting in less than ten hours. Tell me exactly what you want."

Dominic opened a desk drawer. He pulled out a thick stack of paper and tossed it onto the polished wood. It landed with a heavy thud.

"Fifty pages," he said. "A binding marriage contract."

"I am already married."

"Not for long," he countered. He leaned over the desk, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "Julian filed an emergency injunction against you twenty minutes ago. He claims you are mentally unfit to run the company due to pregnancy hormones."

My fingernails dug into the palms of my hands. "He did what?"

"He is moving fast," Dominic said, tapping the contract. "You need ten million dollars by eight o'clock tomorrow morning to keep your CEO seat. I will give you fifty million. I will shield you from the media circus Julian is about to unleash. I will crush him so thoroughly he will never step foot in a boardroom again."

"You expect me to marry the man who spent three years trying to bankrupt my firm?" I asked, a bitter laugh escaping my throat.

"I spent three years trying to bankrupt Julian," Dominic corrected. "You just happened to be standing next to him. Remove him from the equation, and our interests align perfectly."

"And your price?" I asked.

"The Thorne family internal financial passwords," Dominic stated.

My jaw tightened. "My maiden name is off-limits. The Thorne accounts hold the foundational assets of my empire. If I give you those passwords, you own the infrastructure of my entire company. My grandfather built those accounts."

"And your husband is currently trying to steal them," Dominic said smoothly. "I am offering you a partnership. Julian wants to steal your legacy. I want to merge ours. You give me the Thorne access codes, and I give you the ammunition to blow your husband's life apart."

"You want total control," I challenged.

"I want transparency," Dominic fired back. "Julian hid millions in offshore accounts using your signature. If I am going to fund your corporate war tomorrow morning, I need to know the Thorne vaults are secure from his interference."

I stared at the thick document resting on the desk.

"You set a trap for Julian, and now you are setting one for me," I said.

"I am offering you a weapon," Dominic replied. He picked up a gold fountain pen and held it out to me. "Take it."

I stepped closer to the desk. The sheer audacity of his demand hung heavy in the freezing room. He wanted the keys to my kingdom. He wanted the very thing Julian had tried and failed to steal from me for five years.

"If I give you the Thorne passwords, you answer to me regarding any withdrawals," I demanded.

"Agreed," Dominic said, not blinking.

"If Julian tries to contest the divorce, you bury him in litigation until he runs out of air."

"I will bury him before lunch," Dominic promised.

I reached across the desk. My fingers brushed the cool metal of the pen.

I pulled it from his grip.

My hand hovered in mid-air over the signature line on the first page.

The marble room felt completely silent. My pulse hammered against my throat. If I signed this, I handed a ruthless corporate predator the keys to my family's vault. If I refused, Julian would strip me of my title, my dignity, and my company by sunrise.

I thought about Julian begging on his knees in the clinic. I thought about the crowd laughing at me. I thought about the sheer humiliation of carrying two babies for a man who viewed me as nothing more than a bank account.

I lowered the pen. The nib scratched against the thick paper.

I did not hesitate. I wanted Julian destroyed. If dealing with the devil guaranteed my revenge, I would gladly sign my soul away.

I slashed my signature across the first page.

"Fast reader," Dominic observed, a faint smirk touching his lips.

"I know how to read a contract," I snapped, flipping past the standard non-disclosure clauses. "I want to see the exact terms of the asset merger."

I turned the heavy pages, scanning the legal jargon. Dominic had outlined everything. The destruction of Julian's shares. The transfer of the Thorne passwords. The public relations strategy to announce our sudden alliance.

I reached the final page.

The ink on the last addendum was fresh, as if it had been printed just minutes before I arrived.

I stopped. My eyes tracked the heavy black font.

"Upon the birth of the twin infants," I read aloud, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

I dragged my gaze up from the paper and stared at Dominic.

The final clause demanded my unborn twins bear the Sterling surname.
