Chapter 1 of Guarding The Alpha

The Ironwood Pack believed a true Alpha was defined by strength, rigid tradition, and unwavering adherence to the laws set down since the First Shift. But at the moment, Alpha Caius Thorne was being defined by how close he was pressed against his Mate's Head Guard in the pitch-black, emergency safe room.

The space was a glorified closet carved deep into the granite foundation of the fortress-a necessary evil for sudden, catastrophic security breaches. It smelled of ozone, old dust, and the sterile, cold metal that comprised its armored door. In this tight, airless box, Alpha Caius was stuck with his Mate's damn sexy bodyguard in a space barely wide enough for one wolf to comfortably turn, and the sexual tension was so thick it felt like another occupant.

The scream of the initial power surge and the adrenaline of the security breach was the official excuse for their current position; the electricity between them, however, had been building for months, a silent charge waiting for the inevitable catastrophic short.

Caius's POV

I've always noticed the walking Greek god who commands and seizes every breath, always lurking precisely three steps behind my chosen mate and Luna-to-be, Sera. Rhys Valerius. But I've never been this close to him. Not in this consuming, suffocating way where the heat radiating off his body was the only warmth in the room. He was a hot piece of work who makes me doubt everything-my authority, my loyalty, and definitely my sexuality, which until five months ago, I'd been perfectly content to call straight.

He is so close that if the emergency light had been working, I could count the stray strands of his lashes. As it was, I could only feel the severe, perfect geometry of his face inches from mine and smell the intoxicating mix of frost and metal that clung to his uniform-the scent of duty and cold, pure self-control.

I mean, no one would be able to overlook the attraction of this walking mini-god. Sorry, I have derailed again, but how can I not?

I am the Alpha of the Ironwood Pack, Caius Thorne. My Alpha training demanded I project composure, strength, and an almost brutal adherence to the traditional path. My mating ceremony is just around the corner, courtesy of my parents who won't stop nagging for a mate and an heir. The political alliance with the Vane Pack, Sera's family, is crucial to securing our southern borders. Everything is perfect. Everything is planned.

Except for the Head Guard.

My chosen mate, Sera, arrived three weeks ago. She is kind, beautiful, and utterly compliant with all the traditions. She not only came with her substantive and voluminous glacier of silk and beaded dresses, she also came with a dedicated bodyguard: Rhys Valerius, Head of the Guard Corps, the most disciplined warrior in the Pack.

I know his face by heart from security briefings I now invent just to study him: his jawline chiseled, ending in a point of perfect symmetry that could cut glass; he possesses the aquiline nose of an emperor, straight and commanding, making his face look like it was stamped from a classical Roman coin; his brow carved like granite, forever setting his deep-set, silver eyes into shadow. And his lips-his full and classic lips that won't stop calling on me to have a taste. I've rehearsed kissing those lips in my mind a thousand times, a practice run for the forbidden act that always ended with me waking up sweating and terrified.

A crash from outside the armored door jolted me back to the suffocating present. The building-wide power surge had plunged the room into deeper darkness, and the scent of Rhys-the heavy, clean scent of frost and metal-hit me like a physical blow. The safety protocol was active, locking us in, likely for the next hour until the system could self-diagnose and reboot.

I heard Rhys shift, the leather of his shoulder holster creaking against the sound dampening foam of the wall. His powerful shoulder brushed mine, and a shot of pure, unwanted electricity arced between us.

"Alpha," Rhys's voice was low, professional, and entirely too close to my ear, sending a ridiculous, embarrassing shiver down my spine. "We remain here until the all-clear is given. I have manually overridden the ventilation intake to limit risk."

We remain here. In a space smaller than my walk-in closet? With him?

The panic was real-not the security panic, but the raw, selfish panic that was dissolving into a thrilling, dangerous need. My hand, meant to check the manual release panel on the wall, somehow found his arm instead. My fingers brushed the rock-solid muscle beneath his uniform. The contact was intoxicating.

"I know the protocol, Rhys," I managed, sounding strained, forcing my voice to maintain the Alpha authority I was rapidly losing. "But what caused the surge? Where is the Beta team?"

"On their way to the main grid. The source is undetermined. Sera is secured in the inner ward as per priority protocol," he confirmed, his voice regaining that terrifying stoic detachment.

My fingers tightened on his arm, demanding he acknowledge the current, immediate reality. I wasn't asking about security anymore. The question hanging in the air was thick, suffocating, and entirely treasonous: What do we do now?

The silence stretched, immense and charged. I could feel his breath, slow and controlled, ghosting my cheek. He was waiting for my command, waiting for me to pull away and re-establish the professional distance. He was waiting for the Alpha.

But the Alpha was gone. Only the panicked, selfish man remained.

I acted before the shame could take hold. I closed the scant remaining distance between us, using the absolute authority of my rank-my destined power-as a clumsy shield for my terror and desire. I am the Alpha. I command this moment. I command you.

And I kissed him.

Rhys's POV

The Valerius family exists only to serve and protect the Vane-it is our sacred, millennia-old Oath of Service. My father and his father swore it, and I, Rhys Valerius, Head of the Alpha Guard, swore it deepest of all. My life is not my own. My duty is my identity; my loyalty is pure. There is no room for personal, distracting desire, especially not for the one person whose security is my ultimate charge.

Then Alpha Caius Thorne arrived.

His beauty was regal and entirely disruptive. He had the monolithic stature and sculptural features of a god, giving him a commanding height that felt dominating. He moved with a fluid, deceptive grace that hinted at the predator beneath the polished surface-a predator that had spent weeks hunting my composure.

However, the formality ended with his eyes. They were his downfall and my greatest draw-striking gold-flecked amber, constantly alive and intensely expressive. I had trained myself to only look at his shoulder, his chest, or his hands, anywhere but those windows into his chaotic, beautiful mind. I couldn't help but notice him. He is no one but my Luna-to-be's mate, Alpha Caius Thorne, and he represents everything my duty requires me to protect, not covet* Am I wrong falling for the Alpha, and a male at that?* It's not wrong, my Wolf whispered, *it is fate.* But the Pack laws, the Elder's pronouncements, and my Oath screamed condemnation. It's not like I was going to act upon the feeling, so *no biggie*, I had tried to tell myself, ignoring the constant, subtle burn beneath my skin.

Now, confined in this dark tomb, the lie was suffocating.

I heard the power surge die down and felt the distinct click of the heavy door locking. I manually cut the ventilation, needing to concentrate, needing to eliminate every variable. The air was dead, and the proximity to Caius was a physical, pressing weight.

I had tried to anchor myself to duty, reciting the protocols aloud. But when his hand-the hand that bore the Alpha ring-sought out and gripped my arm, I lost the ability to speak. I was consumed by the intimacy of his touch in the terrifying darkness. His fingers tightened, conveying a question that was not about security. What do we do now?

I couldn't stop noticing his soft, chocolate-colored lips that looked like soft tofu, so out of place on that sharp, aristocratic face. I felt my Wolf howling, frantic and thrilled, a treasonous counterpoint to the logic screaming in my skull. I knew what was coming. I was thinking of acting upon my thoughts, an imagination that I was sure would grant and endorse my death, but I couldn't stop wanting to go ahead with it. The adrenaline from the power failure was no longer the dominant force; it was the raw, electric hum of his anticipation.

Then he moved. The scent of **cedarwood and rain**-his Alpha scent-suddenly became overwhelming. He was too close, his breathing ragged, his intentions no longer masked by duty. I barely registered the press of his demanding mouth before my own discipline snapped like a dry twig.

His lips landed on mine. The taste exceeded all expectations-it tasted like **cedarwood and adrenaline**, sharp and wild, immediately dominating the air. It was the pure, forbidden flavor of the Alpha's essence, raw and unburdened by rank, and I became instantly addicted.

I reciprocated the kiss. It wasn't gentle; it was desperate, a raw explosion of loyalty, duty, and need that I had spent my entire life suppressing. It was the conscious choice to commit treason.

In the cold, safe darkness, the bodyguard had just kissed the Alpha.

And in doing so, we had just doomed us both.
