Chapter 1

My name is Margaret Turner.

After my daughter, Sarah McDowell, becomes pregnant, I am shocked to find that I can hear the thoughts of the baby in her womb.

"Grandma, please don't let Mommy get the prenatal checkup! If they learn I'm a girl, Dad will make her get rid of me. I don't want to die!"

I can't believe what I'm hearing. Knowing that my son‑in‑law, Jeremy O'Brien, works at a hospital and can use his connections to learn the baby's gender, I do everything in my power to keep Sarah from being examined.

But three months later, doctors confirm that Sarah's baby has a congenital deformity and is fated to be born disabled.

Sarah is devastated, and guilt consumes me. Suddenly, I hear my granddaughter's voice again.

"It's all because of Dad. He cheated with that nurse and returned home soaked in her cheap perfume. As soon as Mommy breathed it in, I was fated to come into the world deformed. Poor Mommy…"

Rage explodes inside me. Without a second thought, I storm into Jeremy's workplace, determined to catch him in the act.

I don't expect to walk in on a critical heart surgery he is performing. My intrusion throws the room into chaos, and the patient dies on the operating table.

The patient's family loses control, and they cause a violent scene in the hospital. In the mayhem, Jeremy is killed on the spot.

When Sarah learns what I've done, she is consumed by rage and declares she wants nothing more to do with me. At that moment, my granddaughter's voice echoes in my mind once more.

"Mommy is heartbroken and needs time to heal. Grandma, please don't make things worse. Mommy will be okay after she rests."

Hearing this, I force myself to stay calm. But that very night, word arrives that Sarah has thrown herself into a river and ended her life.

Shattered by grief, I eventually make the same tragic choice. As my final breath fades, my granddaughter's chilling laugh echoes in my ears.

When I open my eyes again, I find myself back on the day her voice first crept into my mind.

"Help me! Mommy can't go to her prenatal checkup. If they find out I'm a girl, Daddy will secretly give her abortion pills. I don't want to die!"

A little girl's trembling sobs suddenly drifted to my ears. A chill ran down my spine, and my skin prickled with a cold sweat.

When I looked around, I realized I had been reborn. I was back on the day I first accompanied my daughter, Sarah McDowell, to her prenatal checkup.

Noticing the pale, drawn look on my face, Sarah couldn't help but tease me. "Mom, why are you acting so tense about my appointment? You look like you've seen a ghost!"

I swallowed hard, unsure how to describe the nightmares I had endured in my past life.

Even then, I had already heard the cries of my granddaughter, Mia O'Brien. Just like in this life, her voice reached me moments before Sarah's prenatal appointment.

Through her desperate sobs, Mia pleaded with me to stop the checkup. She was convinced it was the only way for her to be born safely.

Thinking about how difficult Sarah's pregnancy had already been, fear gripped me. I couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to the precious grandchild we were about to welcome.

From that moment on, I refused to let Sarah attend any prenatal checkups. I thought of a bunch of excuses to keep her away.

I thought I was protecting my beloved granddaughter. However, three months later, Sarah arranged a checkup without telling anyone.

The news she shared hit me like a thunderbolt. Mia had a congenital chest deformity. The critical window for intervention had passed, leaving her with a severe deformity that could not be corrected.

I was consumed with regret, convinced that my own foolishness had caused her suffering.

Just as I was ready to devote my entire life to making amends to Sarah and Mia, Mia's voice reached me once again.

"My deformity isn't your fault, Grandma. It all happened because Daddy had an affair with that nurse at the hospital. After Mommy inhaled too much of her cheap perfume, I was destined to be born disabled.

"I'm in so much pain, and Mommy is utterly helpless. Who will stand up for us? That heartless father of mine is still cheating with that nurse at the hospital."

Mia's words ignited a surge of anger within me, and I rushed to the hospital without thinking. I was determined to confront my son-in-law, Jeremy O'Brien, and hold him accountable.

I could never have imagined that my impulsive actions would jeopardize the critical heart surgery Jeremy was conducting. In a tragic twist, an innocent life was lost on the operating table.

The patient's relatives went berserk, stabbing Jeremy over and over. He was killed on the spot. When Sarah heard the news, she crumpled, and tears streamed down her face.

Overwhelmed with guilt, I desperately wanted to comfort her. However, once again, Mia's voice stopped me. "What Mommy needs most right now is peace and quiet. She's very upset, and seeing you would only make her feel worse. Give her a little more time."

Trusting Mia, I held back and stayed away.

I never could have anticipated that Sarah would take her life that very night. All she left behind was a note written in blood. Each word carried nothing but anger and resentment toward me.

Not only did Sarah blame me for Mia's condition, but she also accused me of causing Jeremy's death. In her anguish, she demanded to know why I hadn't been the one to die.

I was consumed by sorrow. All I could think of was ending my own life. I couldn't comprehend what had driven Mia to bring such devastation upon our family.

Unable to bear it any longer, I eventually threw myself into the lake. As my awareness faded, the sound of Mia clapping and cheering seemed to reach me.

Fortunately, fate had given me a second chance. Recalling everything from that lifetime, the sound of Mia's cries provoked nothing but sheer disdain in me.

I stepped forward and nudged Sarah in front of the doctor. "Examine her thoroughly. If the child has any health problems, it's best to terminate the pregnancy sooner rather than later," I said coldly.

Chapter 2

Though Sarah was stunned by my words, the news that followed shattered her even more. Just like in my past life, Mia had an underdeveloped chest cavity.

With a mask of calm, I said, "If that's the case, I still believe ending the pregnancy might be the safer option. If the baby is born with deformities, I fear our family won't be able to handle it."

Sarah's eyes instantly filled with tears. "Mom! After eight long years of trying, I finally got pregnant. No matter how slim the chance, I cannot bring myself to terminate the pregnancy!"

She gripped my hand tightly. Her whole body was shaking with sobs.

My heart twisted with pain. I knew I could never bring myself to say those cold words again.

The doctor let out a sigh. He proceeded to recommend a conservative treatment plan and prescribed medication for Sarah to take at home.

On the way back, my mind churned restlessly. It didn't take long before Mia's voice echoed in my thoughts again. "As long as Mommy takes this medicine to replenish her vitamins, I'll definitely be a healthy baby when I'm born."

Without a word, I stared at the bottle of pills in Sarah's hand.

In my past life, Mia's deformity had been caused by a severe vitamin deficiency and a lack of leafy vegetables in Sarah's diet.

Still, I couldn't help but question whether this bottle of supplements could really fix a congenital defect.

The more Mia spoke with such conviction, the more my doubts gnawed at me.

Once I returned home, I started doing the exact opposite of whatever Mia told me.

Whenever Mia turned down leafy greens, I juiced them and ensured Sarah drank every last drop.

Mia refused to eat fish, eggs, and milk. All she wanted was chips and junk food. With this in mind, I took extra care to prepare wholesome meals for Sarah every day and discarded anything even remotely unhealthy.

Day by day, things started to improve. At every prenatal check-up, we were greeted with good news.

Overwhelmed with joy, Sarah would wrap her arms around me. "Mom, you take such good care of me. As long as you're here, I feel at ease. Forget those stupid pills! Your home-cooked meals are all we need to get the baby back to health."

I felt a surge of relief, believing that everything I had done after being reborn had given Sarah a genuine shot at a better life.

However, at the next checkup, everything shattered.

The doctor exploded with fury. "Why didn't you take the medicine I prescribed? With such a severely malformed chest and underdeveloped limbs, this child will inevitably be born with serious deformities! Why won't you listen?"

His words struck me like lightning. As I met Sarah's accusing gaze, all I could think to do was apologize.

However, just like in my past life, Sarah coldly brushed my hand away. "Mom, why would you purposely harm me like this? If I had followed the doctor's advice and taken those supplements, my baby could have been healthy.

"But instead, you stubbornly insisted on making homemade food. You've completely ruined our family's future!"

I didn't know how to respond. As I watched Sarah walk away, tears began running down my face.

Before I could even begin to mourn, Mia's voice echoed in my mind once more. "The only person responsible for my deformities is Daddy. His affair caused Mommy to be exposed to toxic perfume, and that's how I ended up like this...

"My life is completely ruined, and now Mommy's blaming you for it all. I genuinely feel bad for you, Grandma. Who's going to defend us?

"Daddy is currently at the hospital with his mistress. If you go now, you can expose them and finally get the justice we deserve!"

Initially, Mia's advice seemed well-intentioned, but in truth, every sentence was meant to provoke me.

The catastrophe from my past life hung over me like a shadow. I no longer dared to rush to the hospital blindly.

Since I couldn't undo what had already happened, I chose to distance myself from Sarah and Jeremy.

My own happiness no longer mattered. As long as Sarah didn't have to endure any more hardship, that was enough for me. Her and Jeremy's happiness was all I cared about.

I knew that Jeremy was honest and loyal. I was certain he would never cheat. He and Sarah had been together for nearly a decade, and now that she was finally pregnant, he cared more for her well-being than anything else. There was no way he would betray her.

In my past life, I had been blinded by rage. But after being reborn, I finally saw through the inconsistencies in Mia's words.

I packed my belongings and quietly left Sarah and Jeremy's home in the dead of night. I stopped involving myself in their lives and never asked about Mia's situation again.

Weeks passed, and Sarah gradually came to terms with Mia's deformity. She even reached out to me, hoping for some kind of reconciliation.

Meanwhile, Jeremy's career at the hospital progressed without any hiccups. There was never a whisper of scandal or gossip about him.

I finally began to relax and focus on my own life. Still, I kept my distance and never moved back in with them.

Just when I thought I had finally changed the course of the future, another unexpected event occurred.

As I was going about my chores, my phone suddenly rang. In that moment, Mia's voice pierced my thoughts once more.

She kept yelling at me to answer, insisting that something important had happened.

In my past life, I did exactly as Mia instructed, and yet calamity always struck. Thinking of this, I hesitated. My hand hovered over the phone.

In that fleeting moment, Sarah's call ended abruptly. I immediately tried to call her back, but the line went silent.

Panic gripped me. Without wasting another second, I rushed to my car, desperate to find Sarah.

However, when I reached their home, the only thing I saw was Jeremy sprawled in a pool of blood.

Close by, a crazed woman was holding a knife in her hand. Similar to my past life, Jeremy had been stabbed and left for dead.

My chest tightened. Before I could even ask what had happened, Sarah slapped me hard across the face. "Why didn't you pick up your phone? You've destroyed my entire family! It's because of you that my baby is deformed, and now I've lost my husband too. How do you even have the nerve to stand here?"

Chapter 3

I shook my head, struggling to comprehend it all. How could missing a single phone call set off such a devastating chain of events?

Inside Sarah's womb, Mia sobbed helplessly. "Mommy felt a sharp pain in her chest and needed help right away. In her desperation, she could only call you. I had begged you endlessly, but you didn't answer.

"With no one else to turn to, Mommy asked Daddy for help. But in his panic, he made a critical mistake during surgery. Following the patient's death, Daddy was killed by their grieving relatives. It's all because of you, Grandma!"

I shook my head. "It's not my fault. I've tried so hard to do things differently, yet no matter what I change, it always ends the same."

Sarah clung to my arm, and her nails cut deep into my skin. "I hate you! I wish you weren't my mother! Why don't you just die?"

Tears welled up in her eyes as she turned and fled. I stood there, swallowed by confusion.

I had tried everything I could to put a stop to the disasters that had plagued my past life. Yet now, it felt as if every one of my efforts had been turned into some cruel joke.

In that instant, fragments of my past life surged back, replaying themselves before my very eyes.

It felt as though a pair of invisible hands was dragging my entire family toward the same abyss once more.

Watching Sarah's figure disappear into the distance, I felt compelled to chase after her and beg for forgiveness.

However, once again, Mia's voice cut through the moment. "Grandma, you're so annoying! Why can't you just leave Mommy alone? She hates you right now. If you keep bothering her, she might actually kill herself."

Fear froze me in place. I didn't know what to do.

If I listened to Mia, would Sarah suffer the same fate she did in my past life?

Nonetheless, it was exactly because I had ignored Mia's warning back then that I missed Sarah's call. As a result, Jeremy met a tragic end, and the same disaster struck again.

Even as my mind wavered, my legs moved on their own. I followed closely behind Sarah, terrified she might do something reckless again.

As soon as Sarah sensed me behind her, she spun on her heels. Her eyes burned with hatred as she glared at me.

"How long are you going to keep following me? You're disgusting. Even if I were heading straight toward my own doom, would you still insist on tagging along?"

Startled, I looked up. We were at the very lakeside where she had once ended her life.

I lunged forward, desperate to stop her, but in the blink of an eye, Sarah had already plunged into the water.

Her hands thrashed violently across the surface, and her face had turned crimson from holding her breath.

At the same time, Mia's harsh words echoed relentlessly in my mind. "Grandma, what are you waiting for? After killing all of us, how do you even have the nerve to stay alive? Someone like you doesn't deserve to live!"

Her words hit me like a spell, and I found myself slowly climbing over the lake's railing.

But just as I was about to jump, a bitter laugh escaped me. "Damn. Did you really think you could fool me that easily?"

Everything in this life seemed to be unfolding exactly as before. Yet after being reborn and witnessing Sarah's suicide with my own eyes, I finally understood the real problem. I also realized why Mia's voice had always been able to reach me.

Nothing in life was bound by destiny. For the first time, it felt as though I had found a way to save everyone.
