Chapter 1 of Goodbye to My Husband, Hello to His Empire

I was never meant to belong in this house.

That truth had settled over my life like dust on a forgotten ledger—quiet, heavy, impossible to ignore. Within these walls, I existed only as a shadow: unnoticed, uncelebrated, unclaimed. No one spoke my name with reverence. No one toasted my presence with the clink of glasses.

And yet, I had never demanded much.

I never craved diamonds worth more than the city skyline, nor the gold-etched pistols that decorated the halls of my father’s empire. I never insisted on lavish parties in my honor, or the type of respect reserved for heirs and heiresses.

All I had ever wanted was a single promise.

One simple assurance. A trip beyond the borders of this city. A voyage across oceans I had only read about in books.

Caelan had whispered those words long ago, when the world still seemed wide, and when the bond between us had not yet been poisoned by ambition and deceit.

I remember that night vividly.

I had just turned eighteen, standing barefoot on the cobblestones outside my father’s estate. The city lights flickered like distant fires. Caelan stood behind me, his arms wrapped loosely around my waist, his breath warm against my ear.

“One day,” he murmured, pressing his lips lightly to my temple, “when the burdens of this family grow lighter, I’ll take you beyond these streets. Beyond this empire.”

“Just the two of us,” he added, a quiet fire in his tone. “Across the ocean. To a life only we will share.”

Back then, there was certainty in his eyes. Back then, I believed every word.

But that was before the rival families clawed at our borders, before the alliances became little more than titles and papers. Before I became his partner in name… and his servant in practice.

Now, under the blood-orange glow of my forty-eighth birthday, no one remembered me.

No toast in my honor. No grand banquet waiting in the main hall. The family moved through the evening as though I were a ghost, a shadow of what I once was. Soldiers returned from the streets with dust on their shoes. Young heirs laughed near the study while elders sipped their whiskey in quiet corners.

No one acknowledged me. No one noticed.

Yet some foolish part of me hoped. Perhaps tonight would be different.

After the last of the family left for dinner, I found Caelan alone in the main office—the room where he conducted the family’s most sensitive business.

He sat behind the great mahogany desk, a ceremonial pistol in hand, polishing it with meticulous care as if it were sacred. The firelight reflected off its engraved silver.

My heart hammered as I approached.

“Caelan,” I began, voice low.

He did not look up.

The silence stretched like a rope ready to snap.

“Do you remember,” I asked cautiously, “what you promised me on my eighteenth birthday?”

He paused, the tiniest flicker of attention in his eyes.

“Which promise?” he asked lightly, almost mockingly.

The words hit sharper than any gunshot.

“You said we would leave this city behind,” I continued steadily. “When the family no longer required your presence on every corner… when our son was grown. You promised we’d go. Just the two of us.”

Caelan laughed then. A hollow, sharp sound.

“You can’t be serious,” he said, finally lifting his gaze to mine. His eyes swept over me, cool and dismissive. “Do you truly think you’re entitled to such indulgences?”

“Look at yourself, Lyneth,” he said, lips curling. “You’ve aged into someone fragile. One hard night in the streets could ruin you.”

His words cut me, but I pressed on.

“But tonight—”

“Tonight?” he interrupted sharply. “Tonight, you are no longer the girl who dreamed beyond the city walls. The world does not bend for you anymore. Not like it does for Bianca.”

Bianca. My sister-in-law. The woman Caelan had chosen to inherit his attention. She had everything I lacked—youth, radiance, golden hair that turned heads wherever she walked. Caelan did not deny their fascination.

“She represents this family well,” he continued smoothly. “She travels with our allies, meets with rival dons, and upholds our reputation.”

Then his gaze returned to me.

“You, Lyneth… your place is behind the scenes. Keeping the house running. Handling the accounts. Making sure everything appears in order.”

Behind me, the laughter of my grandchildren pierced the office. Marco and Allesio, grown tall and strong, lounged near the doorway. But their eyes were cold.

“Grandma,” Marco jeered, “you look like some ghost from a forgotten corner of the city.”

Allesio added with a grin, “Yeah. And you smell like old papers and dust.”

No one stopped them.

Across the room, my son Salvatore leaned against the wall.

“Hey, Ma!” he called. “Wash my jacket later. My partner’s busy.” He gestured to the pile near the door. “And don’t ruin the white one again.”

Something inside me snapped.

“I am not your servant,” I said quietly, but firmly.

The room fell silent.

“What did you say?” Salvatore barked.

“I said I am not—”

A glass shattered against the floor near my feet.

“Then what are you?” he demanded. “You don’t run operations. You don’t manage territories. You contribute nothing!”

“I raised you,” I said steadily. “Fed you when you were too small to walk the streets. Kept you safe when rival families threatened us. Worked long before you could even hold a gun.”

Marco scoffed. “Maybe you should’ve worked on keeping your scent presentable.”

Allesio grinned cruelly. “Even the kids flinch when you’re near.”

Their laughter rose again.

Caelan didn’t move. He merely turned the pistol under the firelight, as though polishing it could erase my words.

“We hold great power in this family,” he said calmly. “But I will not waste it on unnecessary hands. You already live here. Two capable hands are enough.”

“The woman of the house,” he said finally. That was my title. But nothing belonged to me—neither the estates, the accounts, nor a single coin without his approval.

Later that night, when the house finally slept, I slipped into our private quarters. From the back of the closet, beneath old blankets, I retrieved a small crimson satchel.

Worn with age, given to me by Caelan years ago during a trip to Naples—back when our bond still felt unbreakable.

I stared at my hands. They were no longer the hands of the woman I once was—thin, rough, hardened by years of labor and neglect. Once, I had been someone.

Lyneth De Luca. Daughter of a feared Don. A woman born to command respect, to wield influence.

For love, I had abandoned everything—my birthright, my territories, my family’s legacy. I had believed his loyalty, his promises, his bond would sustain me.

But now…

I was nothing more than a shadow drifting through a family that no longer acknowledged me. No estate. No crown. No authority.

I closed the satchel slowly.

Perhaps the greatest gift I could give myself tonight… was freedom.

Freedom from this house. Freedom from this legacy. And most of all—freedom from him.
