Chapter 1 of Goodbye, Gentlemen, Enjoy the Bankruptcy

I watched my nineteen-year-old son drop to one knee and kiss the hand of another woman.

He pressed his lips to Isabella’s knuckles, swearing the heir's oath to the family’s true madrina.

"Isabella raised me," my son announced to the silent dining room. "You're just a name on Father's contract."

My husband Dante clinked his champagne glass against Isabella's, not even glancing at my end of the table.

They really thought I was just an empty signature.

They forgot who funded this entire mafia empire twenty years ago.

I didn't scream or throw my plate.

I simply picked up my phone and opened the offshore trust portal.

With one tap, I froze all five of their shipping routes and both underground banks.

My bodyguard Marcello stepped out of the shadows, sliding my coat over my shoulders.

Let's see how long they survive without my money.

The icy surface of the crystal water glass bit into my palm. I sat anchored to the far end of the mahogany dining table, watching my nineteen-year-old biological son drop down onto the antique Persian rug.

"Isabella," Leo said, his voice carrying easily through the cavernous dining hall.

He reached for the woman sitting to my husband's right. She extended her hand, a massive ruby ring catching the light of the crystal chandelier above us. Leo pressed his lips to her knuckles, bowing his head in absolute reverence.

I tightened my grip on the glass. "Leo. Get off the floor."

He ignored me. He kept his eyes fixed on Isabella. "You raised me. You stayed up with me during the fevers. You taught me what loyalty means in this world. To me, and to everyone in this family, you are the true Madrina."

"Oh, Leo, please," Isabella murmured. She touched her chest, though her lips curved into a sharp, triumphant smile. "Your mother is sitting right there."

"She is not my mother," Leo snapped. He finally turned his head, shooting a glare down the length of the table at me. "She is just a name on my father's contract."

The words hit hard, punching the air from my lungs. I shifted my gaze toward the head of the table. Dante sat there, swirling champagne in his flute, utterly unbothered by his son's public display of disrespect.

"Dante," I said, keeping my voice dangerously steady. "Are you going to allow him to speak to me that way?"

My husband stopped swirling his drink. He leaned back in his high-backed leather chair, his dark eyes sweeping over me with complete indifference. "The boy is a man today, Caterina. He speaks his own mind. And he speaks the truth."

"The truth?" I scoffed, pushing my chair back an inch. "I carried him for nine months. I nearly bled out on the delivery table bringing your heir into the world."

"And then you handed him straight to the nanny," Dante replied smoothly. "Isabella stepped in. She became the mother he actually needed. The mother this entire syndicate needed."

He raised his champagne glass, tilting it toward the woman sitting beside him. "To Isabella. The heart of this house."

Isabella lowered her eyes, feigning humility. "Dante, you shouldn't say such things. Caterina does so much... paperwork for us."

"Paperwork," I repeated. The word tasted like ash on my tongue.

Dante set his glass down. "Speaking of the business. Leo comes of age today. It is time he takes control of the harbor operations."

I stared at him. "The harbor operations run through my smuggling routes. I manage those."

"You managed them," Dante corrected, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "Now, Leo will take over. Isabella has agreed to help him transition. She understands the men on the docks better than you do."

I let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Isabella? She hasn't spent a single day on the docks. She wouldn't know a customs manifest from a grocery receipt."

"I know how to talk to our people, Caterina," Isabella said softly, her voice coated in fake sympathy. "I know how to make them feel valued. You just bark cold orders at them."

"You think running the harbor is about throwing parties for the capos?" I asked, my voice cutting through the room. "It involves bribing federal agents, organizing offshore shell companies, and making sure the cartel shipments don't overlap with the weapons crates. One mistake, and the feds seize everything."

"That is exactly why Leo needs to take over," Dante countered. "You treat the business like a math problem. You lack the ruthlessness required to lead men. Isabella has the respect of the capos. She will ensure Leo learns how to command."

"I keep our men out of federal prison," I fired back.

"Enough," Dante commanded, slamming his hand flat on the table. "The decision is final. The routes go to Leo. Under Isabella's guidance."

I looked down at my left hand, my thumb finding the heavy platinum band on my ring finger. Twenty years ago, I brought five international smuggling routes and two underground banking networks as my dowry. I signed over an absolute controlling family trust to secure our alliance. I handed Dante an empire.

In return, he moved Isabella into the East Wing of this very estate on our second day of marriage.

"You call it paperwork," I said, locking eyes with Dante again. "I call it the foundation you stand on. Without my routes, your soldiers would be peddling cheap scraps on street corners."

Dante's jaw tightened. "Watch your tone, Caterina. You sit at my table. You eat my food. You wear my name."

"I bought this table," I challenged.

Leo sprang to his feet, stepping aggressively between me and his father. "Don't talk to him like that! You've done nothing but act like a calculating bitch since the day I was born. Isabella showed me warmth. She showed me what a real family is. You just care about your ledgers!"

"She visited the men in the hospital when the warehouse blew up last year," Leo argued, pointing a finger at me. "Where were you? Locked in your office, shredding documents!"

"I was destroying the evidence that would have put your father away for life!" I shouted back.

"Those ledgers keep you in imported sports cars and tailored suits, Leo," I added, refusing to break eye contact with my son.

"I don't care about the money!" Leo shouted, his face flushing red. "I care about respect! And my respect belongs to my father, and to the woman who actually acted like a mother."

He turned his back to me, wrapping a protective arm around Isabella's shoulders. She patted his hand, offering me a look of pure, unadulterated pity.

"Caterina," Isabella sighed. "Don't ruin tonight. Leo is just emotional. We all know you have a place here. As Dante's legal wife."

Legal wife. Not partner. Not Madrina. Just a signature on a piece of paper meant to legitimize their wealth.

Dante picked up his glass again, dismissing me entirely. "Sit down, Caterina. Stop embarrassing yourself in front of the boy."

"I'm not the one embarrassing myself," I said.

I twisted the platinum ring. It slipped over my knuckle with ease. I had lost weight over the past few months, the stress of managing the family's legitimate fronts eating away at my appetite while they played house.

"What are you doing?" Dante demanded, his eyes narrowing as he registered my movement.

"Giving you exactly what you want," I said.

I pulled the ring entirely off my finger. The metal felt heavy, burdened with two decades of silent tears, swallowed pride, and blatant betrayal. I held it over my half-full wine glass.

"Mom, stop acting crazy," Leo groaned, rolling his eyes.

I opened my fingers.

The ring hit the red wine with a dull splash, sinking straight to the bottom of the crystal glass.

The dining room went dead silent. Even Isabella dropped her act, her mouth parting in genuine shock.

"You disrespect the marriage," Dante growled, standing up slowly. "You disrespect me."

"There is no marriage to disrespect," I said, stepping away from the table. "You made sure of that twenty years ago when you moved her into the East Wing. I tolerated it for Leo. I tolerated it to build the trust. But if my son no longer recognizes me, then my obligations are finished."

"Sit down!" Dante roared, kicking his chair back. "You don't walk away from me. You don't walk away from this family!"

"Watch me," I said.

I turned my back on them. The heavy oak doors of the dining hall stood thirty feet away, but I kept my spine rigid, my chin high, refusing to rush.

"Let her walk, Dad," I heard Leo say behind me, his voice heavy with arrogance. "She'll be back. She has nowhere else to go. She needs us."

I didn't stop walking. I pushed through the heavy oak doors, leaving the warmth of the dining room behind.

As I crossed the threshold into the dimly lit hallway, the shadows peeled back. Marcello stood there, his massive frame blocking the light from the wall sconces. My personal bodyguard. The only man in this sprawling estate who answered solely to me.

He didn't ask about the shouting. He didn't offer pity.

Instead, he stepped forward and silently handed me a sleek, all-black tablet.

The screen glowed brightly in the dim corridor. It displayed the master control panel for the family trust freeze agreement. Right in the center, a bright red confirmation button pulsed, demanding an answer.

Marcello leaned in, his voice a low, gravelly murmur meant only for my ears.

"Do you want me to completely sever the estate's power grid and lock down the offshore accounts, Boss?"

I stared at the glowing screen, my index finger hovering a fraction of an inch above the red EXECUTE button.
