Chapter 6
After Eve seriously began preparing for divorce, Sean was busy indulging in a frenzy of secret affairs with Mandy. Perhaps he believed Mandy did not have long to live. That was why he felt the need to seize every chance he had, afraid that if he did not take her again and again now, there would be no future opportunity.
Whenever he found an opening, he would pin her beneath him, and every single time they slept together, Mandy secretly recorded it. Then, she would send the videos to Eve.
They did not just sneak around in the study. During morning runs, they would have reckless encounters in a nearby park. Sometimes, Sean even brought Mandy to the office while he was at work. In the videos she sent, there were even scenes of her kneeling beneath his desk, servicing him while he sat above her…
Mandy’s stamina was nothing like that of someone who was supposedly dying. No matter how hard Sean pushed her, she could endure it. More than that, she clearly enjoyed it.
Eve had investigated in secret and found out that Mandy never had lymphoma at all. The illness was nothing more than a lie she fabricated so she could openly move into the Baker’s residence, and it was a lie so crude that Eve uncovered the truth with minimal effort. If Sean had wanted to investigate, how could he possibly have missed it?
It showed he simply did not want to know, because as long as he did not look too closely, he could continue fooling around with Mandy without guilt.
“Eve, you really are spineless.”
After sending so many videos and receiving no reaction, Mandy finally lost her patience. She came over to provoke Eve.
“Sean pins me down every night. My legs are so weak from it. I can barely stand anymore. Are you just going to watch all this happen? You’re pathetic. You don’t even have the courage to confront Sean.
“Are you that afraid he’ll leave you? You pretend to be calm, but inside, you’re terrified, aren’t you? You’re scared that if you make a scene, Sean will choose me instead of you.”
Eve lifted her eyes and glanced at Mandy calmly, asking, “Are you that sure that Sean would choose you?”
“Of course.” Mandy smiled smugly. “If you don’t believe it, just wait and see.”
Just then, a car suddenly sped straight toward the direction where Eve and Mandy were standing. Sean, who was standing nearby, noticed something was wrong instantly. Without hesitation, he dropped everything in his hands and lunged toward Mandy.
“Mandy, watch out!” he yelled, wrapping his body tightly around her, shielding her behind him.
Eve did not have time to dodge. The car slammed into her, sending her flying through the air. Before losing consciousness, the last thing she saw was Sean holding Mandy tightly, using his own body to block all harm meant for her. Blood and tears blurred together.
As her awareness faded, a memory suddenly surfaced. Once, when she and Sean went tandem skydiving together, there had been an accident where the parachute malfunctioned and refused to open. As they plummeted toward certain death, Sean suddenly pulled Eve into his arms, placing himself beneath her. That way, no matter how they landed, he would take the impact first.
He had once used his body to protect her, but now, he had abandoned her to protect another woman.
After some time, in the darkness, Eve faintly heard Sean’s voice.
With great effort, she opened her eyes to see Sean holding her phone, looking irritated as he spoke into it, “A divorce lawyer? You’ve got the wrong number. My relationship with Eve is fine. There’s no way we’re getting divorced. Our marriage only ends in widowhood—never in divorce.”
Chapter 7
After saying that, Sean hung up the phone with a grim expression.
Eve closed her eyes wearily. “You shouldn’t have taken my call without telling me.”
Only then did Sean realize she was awake. He hurriedly sat beside her, his hand clutching hers, full of worry.
“Eve, you’re awake? That’s such a relief! Do you know how much blood you lost? I nearly lost my mind!”
Eve stared at him coldly, saying nothing.
Seeing her silence, Sean looked a little guilty. “Eve, are you mad at me? Don’t be mad. It’s not that I didn’t want to save you… It’s just that from where I was, I couldn’t see you at all. I only realized you were there after saving Mandy. My heart broke when I saw her in danger. If I had known you were there too, I would have saved you first, I swear!”
However, Eve realized she could not tell which of Sean’s words were true and which were lies.
How tragic. They had shared a bed for five years. The man in front of her should have been the one she trusted the most and the one closest to her heart. Yet now, looking at him, she only felt estranged. The man she had once loved so deeply was gone, buried in her memories, never to return.
“I’m tired,” Eve said, closing her eyes again, not wanting to see him any longer.
Sean clearly wanted to say more, but seeing her eyes shut, he sighed and said, “Alright, rest. I’ll handle some company matters and be back soon.”
However, no sooner had he left than Eve received another provocative video from Mandy.
In the video, Mandy clung to Sean’s arm, a sweet smile on her face. “Sean, are you really going to pass down all of the Baker family’s fortune to Zack and Annie?”
“Yeah,” Sean said in a firm tone. “I’ve instructed my lawyer to draw up the documents. After tonight’s dinner, I’ll sign them publicly, in front of everyone and the media, officially recognizing Zack and Annie as my only heirs. Zack will inherit Bakers Corporation, while Annie will inherit over half of the Baker family’s real estate, along with all the precious jewelry that belonged to my mother and to Eve.”
The jewelry alone was worth millions or even tens of millions each… Together, it was priceless.
Mandy could not hide her smugness, yet she pretended to ask, “Does Eve agree to this, though? After all, Zack and Annie aren’t her biological children. What if she has children of her own someday…”
“Eve won’t have children,” Sean said decisively. “Zack and Annie will be her only children. She doesn’t have a choice. I won’t let her have children of her own, so she has to raise them as her own flesh and blood.
“Mandy,” he continued, holding her hand firmly, “even if I can’t give you a marriage, I promise this: all my inheritance belongs to our children. Eve has my heart, but you and the children have all my wealth.”
The video ended abruptly. Eve gripped her phone so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
He had taken her uterus, and now he expected her to raise the children he had with another woman? Fine.
Taking a deep breath, Eve called her divorce lawyer.
“Are the divorce papers ready? Send it to Sean immediately.”
“There’s a dinner party tonight. He plans to announce publicly that all Baker family inheritance will go to the illegitimate children. You need to get there before he announces it and make him sign the papers first. He can give half of his fortune to whoever he wants. My half? Not a penny goes to them. I’d rather dump it into the sea.”
After finishing the call, Eve received a message from the professional team that would help her disappear.
[Ms. Watson, everything is ready. You can leave at any time.]
A faint smile finally appeared on Eve’s tired face. She sent her location, and within half an hour, the team had arranged for her pickup.
With the team’s accompaniment, she boarded a plane bound for another country. Before takeoff, she forwarded every video Mandy had sent her straight to Sean, adding a message.
[You don’t need to apologize. I do not forgive you.]
Then, she threw her phone into the trash and boarded the plane.
Meanwhile, the Baker family dinner party had begun. The event was extravagant, full of high society elites. A crowd of media journalists waited with cameras ready, all eager for Sean’s big announcement.
“Thank you all for taking the time to attend this dinner with us at Bakers Corporation,” Sean said, his tone serious. “I have an important announcement tonight.
“Some media may have caught wind already, but recently, my wife Eve and I have adopted a pair of twins. I’ve always believed that adopted children are no different from our own biological children. So tonight, I will publicly declare, in front of everyone and all media–”
Before he could finish, Eve’s divorce lawyer stepped forward in a single stride, raising his voice to say, “Mr. Sean Baker! I am Ms. Eve Watson’s divorce lawyer. She has entrusted me to divorce you! Here are the divorce papers. Please sign it!”
