Chapter 2
In the taxi, I had to try my best before finally calming down.
As soon as I entered the agency to rent a place, I received a call from one of the volunteers in the countryside.
"Ms. Bell, someone dug up the cemetery next to the peach forest!"
The news dragged me back to reality at once, and I was no longer drenched in sadness.
I heard my heart beating so fast that it was almost jumping out of my chest.
I left my suitcase with the agent, rushed outside to stop a taxi, and arrived at the peach forest on the mountainside as quickly as I could.
My mom's favorite thing was peach blossoms.
Because our lives were nothing but miserable.
My dad died in winter.
So, she taught me to learn the character of peach blossoms since I was a child.
But as far as I was concerned, she was tougher than peach blossoms.
I picked the place where peach blossoms were in full bloom in the forest to be her grave.
Yet when I arrived, I saw the newly leveled ground being turned over again.
Viola smiled sweetly and looked at Scott as if she had done something worth praising.
"Scott, Jade raised me on her own. She's just like this peach blossoms, don't you think?"
She squatted on the ground with a peach blossom branch on her head. Her eyes were full of lust, and she looked prettier than those peach blossoms.
Scott's bodyguards were refilling the pit in front of them.
The peach blossoms blooming on those trees next to them were smashed down by the shovels and mixed into the soil.
They dug up my mother's urn and dumped it under a tree. It was already buried by falling petals, and I could only see one corner of it.
I felt as if I had been struck by lightning, and I could no longer suppress my fury.
"Stop!"
All of a sudden, I burst out with endless power and rushed over. I actually managed to push two six-foot-two men to the ground.
My hairband fell off midst the fight, and my hair was disheveled, making me look like a crazy woman.
Viola was so scared that she curled up in Scott's arms, screaming while trembling.
Then she turned to look at me, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry. I just wanna find a beautiful cemetery for Jade.
"Please... Don't be mad. Scott, my heart hurts so much. Scott..."
She grabbed her chest with one hand and almost couldn't breathe.
I had to admit that she was so good at pretending to be sick.
I didn't wanna talk to her at all.
Scott was busy finding a pill for her.
Taking the chance, I turned my head and roared at the bodyguards.
"Dig it out! What are you waiting for?"
They looked at Scott's gloomy face and did not dare to move.
I snatched a shovel from someone's hand, and as I exerted too much force, my hand went numb.
My life is destined to be humble.
This time, I won't let anyone bully my mom again!
Scott fed Viola the pill and brought her some mineral water.
I had never seen him so anxious and flustered.
In the next second, he rushed forward, snatched the shovel from my hand, and smashed it heavily on the ground next to me. The sound of metal clashing was deafening.
"Laura, stop fucking with my patience!"
I bit my lips so hard, trying my best not to cry out loud.
So close.
I was this close to exhuming Jade's ashes!
I took off my shoes and used them as tools to smash the soft soil.
The bodyguards were so scared that their faces turned pale, but they didn't dare to stop me. They could only pounce on the pit and cover it with their bodies.
Scott grabbed me by the collar and dragged me away from the pit.
"What's wrong with you today, Laura? It's Jade's grave! Her grave! Do you understand what a grave means?
"I can put up with your unreasonable behavior at usual times. But you shouldn't go nuts at a place like this!"
Chapter 3
I bit my dry lips until they bled.
I slowly looked up and met Scott's gloomy and angry gaze.
He was partly responsible for my mom's death, and he wanted me to apologize to the murderer?
My heart was broken.
I couldn't breathe.
Viola recovered after taking the pill and held Scott's arm, her eyes red.
"I'm sorry. It's all my fault. My mom died at the wrong time. It's fine. If Laura likes it here, she can have it."
She began to sob, and her face was covered with tears.
Scott's eyes were full of pity.
He looked at me and said completely impatiently, "We're getting married soon. All my time in the future will be yours. Do you really have to make a scene right after Jade died? Can't you be with Lucy?
"You said last night Lucy was sick. And you're here instead of there being with her? Were you lying to me last night?"
He was so angry that his eyes turned red.
I loved him for five years, and he smeared me just like that for his first love.
My chest throbbed in pain as I breathed.
With trembling lips, I shouted, venting out the grievances that had been consuming me for five years.
"Enough! Scott, you think you're so affectionate? You think you're responsible?
"We've just gotten engaged, and you're spending all your time on Viola. You really expect me to believe that you'll be with me after we get married?
"I'm tired. I'm tired indeed. I even had to send you two messages to cancel our engagement!"
When he heard that I wanted to cancel our engagement, his eyes flickered.
Yet when he opened his mouth again, he was even more furious.
"Yeah! I'll stay with you 24/7! Forget about the company! It might as well go bankrupt! I'll stay with you every day! Happy?"
After that, he was so angry that his face was twisted. He strode to my mom's urn and grabbed it.
Then he used all his strength to smash into the pit.
The ashes scattered all over the ground and quickly blended into the mud.
"Lucy is sick! So what? Jade was Viola's mom, too! So what if we're digging up someone's grave? What's it to you?"
I stared at the deformed urn without blinking.
I felt all the blood drain from my body in an instant, and I completely lost the ability to think.
My cowardice killed Mom.
And now, I couldn't even protect her ashes or her grave!
Flustered, I fell to my knees, reached out to scoop up the dirt with my mom's ashes, and put it in the urn.
In the next second, Scott kicked the urn about thirty feet away.
And now, I had none of Mom's ashes left.
I seemed to have suddenly lost my ability to breathe, and my heart stopped beating.
Endless cries of despair overwhelmed me.
Viola suddenly squatted down beside me.
She said gently, "I'm sorry. I apologize to you on behalf of Scott. He's just too anxious. Mom is really important to me..."
I turned my head stiffly only to see the provocation in her eyes.
And then I lost it. I slapped her fair cheek.
Blood trickled down the corner of her lips.
Almost at the same time, Scott kicked me in the back.
Due to his great force, I lay on the ground.
It hurt so much that my whole body was falling apart, yet the physical pain was nothing compared to my heartache.
"You aren't sick. Stop acting all crazy! Are you done? You want the whole world to know my fiancée is a jealous, crazy gal?"
There was no trace of love for me in his voice.
I, his fiancée, was a disgrace to him.
Pale-faced, I clutched my chest and met his bloodshot gaze.
"Let's cancel the engagement. We'll be strangers from now on. Mr. Wilcher, from now on, you don't have to worry about being disgraced by me.
"Scott, it's over."
Frowning, he was so angry that he actually burst into laughter.
"Laura, what the hell do I have to do to make you stop? You're acting all nuts just because I didn't arrange a doctor for Lucy?
"Fine! I'll go get a doctor for her! OK? I'll go get a doctor for her right now!
"You keep saying Lucy's sick, and where you are? You're here, fighting with Viola for a grave in the wilderness!
"You jealous woman. Your tricks disgust me!"
His words were getting colder and colder, like a sharp blade stabbing into my chest.
Too bad I had already been hurt so deeply that I actually felt numb.
Trembling, I stood up while supporting the soil.
While he took out his phone, I limped to my mom's urn.
My legs went numb, and I couldn't take it anymore.
Scott dialed his assistant's number and immediately ordered.
"Have those experts worked out a solution? Find a hospital and schedule the operation now!
"And get your ass here! Take Laura away! Now! I don't wanna see her for at least a month!"
His assistant fell silent for a long time.
Then his assistant said in a timid voice, "I'm sorry, Mr. Wilcher.
"Ms. Bell has already contacted me. Her mom was cremated this morning and was buried in the peach blossom forest halfway up the mountain. It's ... the place Ms. Quinn chose."
