Chapter 1 of Frosted Twilight, Gentle Dawn

At eighty-eight, my husband lay paralyzed in a wheelchair, his consciousness flickering in and out.

Yet whenever he was lucid, he would grip my hand and mutter, “Throw away those useless paintings, they’re just taking up space.”

I had stood by him for thirty years, burying my award certificates at the bottom of a trunk, packing away my brushes and canvases in the attic, content to be the “obedient, proper” wife in his eyes.

Until one day Nurse Helen handed me an old letter he had hidden. It was a note he had written to a student: “What does she know about art? She’s nothing more than a cook. If there’s another life, I’d want someone like Susan, a girl with light in her eyes.”

Susan had been one of his students. Back then, she often came to our home for meals, sweetly calling me “Mrs. Teacher,” only to turn around and write in her letters that I was “as dull as plain water.”

At eighty-nine, when he lay dying, his last words were still a faint murmur: “Susan’s paintings are truly beautiful.”

Silently, I locked up the attic and put his most treasured inkstone away in storage.

At ninety, I died.

When I opened my eyes again, I was sitting in a studio at the New York Academy of Fine Arts, sunlight streaming across the drawing paper. My foster sister leaned close, pointing at a boy in a white shirt by the window.

“Emily, Professor David Larson is staring at you! But I heard from his assistant that he absolutely hates girls who are too sharp-edged.”

She poked at my drawing board. “Look at your lines, so rigid! Not at all like Olivia’s from the other department—hers are soft and gentle. The professor says he likes girls who are ‘sensible.’ Maybe you should change your style?”

My hand froze around the brush. The wind lifted the curtain outside, reminding me of the unfinished canvas I had once stored away in the attic.

1.

The charcoal pencil in my fingers sliced across the paper in a sharp arc. Larson’s gaze seemed fixed on my drawing board—or perhaps cutting through to the twenty-year-old me, resting on the dusty brushes in the attic.

Sophia was still chattering: “Remember last time, during the outdoor sketching trip? Olivia deliberately smeared her palette against the professor’s white shirt. That’s how you win favor…”

Before she could finish, noise erupted at the back door of the studio.

Several boys stumbled in carrying canvases. One tripped, and a wave of dark paint splashed directly across my board.

The piece I had stayed up all night revising, The Attic in Morning Light, was instantly drowned in black. The wet oil dripped along the folds of the canvas, like the tears that once fell when I read that old letter in another life.

“I’m so sorry! So sorry!” The boy who caused it stammered.

But Olivia stepped forward from the crowd, palette in hand, and brushed her delicate fingers over my ruined painting.

“Emily, your lines are too stiff. Even if the paint hadn’t spilled, the professor probably wouldn’t like it anyway.”

The silver bracelet at her wrist glinted, and suddenly I remembered—another life, she too wore that bracelet when she came over for dinner, secretly swapping my freshly mixed yellow ochre for raw umber while I was in the kitchen.

I clenched the charcoal pencil until my knuckles turned white.

Back then, I had only wiped away the switched colors in silence. But now, as sunlight pierced through the curtain’s gap and struck my paper, beneath the blackened lines I felt a stubbornness buried for thirty years.

“It’s fine,” I said suddenly, with a smile. Pulling a fresh sheet of paper across the board, I added, “I’ve been meaning to try using splattered ink as a base.”

A soft gasp came from behind me. Sophia tugged nervously at my sleeve.

But I lifted my eyes to the window.

At some point, Larson had stepped inside. A fountain pen rested at the collar of his white shirt. His gaze settled on my new sheet of paper—first furrowed, then slowly relaxing.

That night I stayed late in the studio, trying to salvage the ruined painting. Moonlight spilled across the easel, and in the corner of the frame I caught sight of a torn scrap of paper clinging there.

Carefully peeling it away, I saw the familiar script:

“…Her art carries fire, but life’s daily burdens have nearly extinguished it. If only she could take up the brush again…”

The strokes were powerful—unmistakably Larson’s handwriting.

My fingers trembled, nearly dropping the page.

In the past, his letter to a student had scorned me as “just a cook.” Yet these words seemed written for someone entirely different.

At that moment, the studio door opened. Larson entered, carrying a stack of portfolios. His face paled when he saw the scrap in my hand.

“This…” He strode quickly toward me, his fingers reaching for the paper before pulling back sharply.

“That’s something from thirty years ago. How could it be here?”

My heart pounded. Memories of another lifetime surged back—at eighty-nine, I had found a wooden box beneath his pillow. Inside was that belittling letter and a yellowed photograph.

In the picture, a young Larson stood in a studio beside a girl in a denim dress. Her features resembled mine, and in her hands was a canvas nearly identical to my ruined Attic in Morning Light.

“Do you know the girl in this photograph?” I whispered.

Larson’s throat bobbed. He opened one of the portfolios. On the front page was the same photo, with a handwritten note:

“To Amy—may your eyes always hold light.”

Amy—my childhood nickname. Only my parents and he, in that former life, had ever known it.

The deadline for the National Collegiate Art Competition loomed, and I hung my revised Morning Light in Ink to dry in the studio.

Just then Olivia swept in with several judges, pointing accusingly at my painting.

“Judges, look at this composition—it’s almost identical to a European artist’s work from last year. Could it be…?”

The word plagiarism stabbed into my ears like a needle.

I rushed forward, pointing at the clay pot on the attic’s windowsill.

“This belonged to my grandmother, passed down to me. The crack was from when I dropped it ten years ago. No European artist could have included such a detail.”

The judges leaned closer, indeed spotting the fine fracture in the brushwork. Olivia’s face turned pale, but she pressed on.

“But Emily, that ruined painting of yours—it looked exactly like Professor Larson’s piece from thirty years ago!”
