Chapter 1 of From Rejection to Royalty: The Executioner Luna

The water in the wooden washbucket was cold enough to numb Iris’s fingers to the bone, but she squeezed the heavy wool rag without a sound. It was three hours before the Blood Moon Ceremony, and the grand lower corridor of the pack house was slick with winter mud and melted ice tracking in from the courtyard.

"Faster, useless!"

A heavy, leather-soled boot slammed brutally into the rim of the bucket. Filthy, ice-cold water sloshed across the front of Iris’s faded cotton dress, soaking through her apron and drenching her raw, scraped knees against the stone floor.

Iris didn't flinch. She kept her chin tucked tightly toward her collarbone, her eyes fixed on the wet flagstones, and let her shoulders hunch into the universal posture of a beaten, wolf-less Omega.

"The Alpha’s feast begins soon, and the lower halls still smell like grease," spat Beta Thomas, towering over her with his massive arms crossed over his leather armor. "If these floors aren't bone-dry before the high lords from the Western Pack arrive, I’ll have the night guards hang you by your wrists in the courtyard until dawn. Do you hear me, girl?"

"Yes, Beta Thomas," Iris whispered, keeping her voice raspy, quiet, and trembling with fake, practiced fear. She squeezed her eyes shut, lowering her head until her nose almost touched the cold stone. "I'm sorry. I'll work faster."

Satisfied with her absolute submission, Thomas grunted in disgust and turned on his heel, his heavy iron boots echoing loudly down the vaulted hall.

The second his back turned, Iris’s posture shifted by a fraction of an inch.

She didn't fight back. She never fought back. For three years, she had endured the kicks, the stale bread crusts, and the cruel laughter of the pack without raising her voice. To everyone in the Blood Moon Pack, she was Iris the Defective—a fatherless girl whose wolf had never awakened, rendering her the absolute bottom of the pack hierarchy.

Yet beneath her calm lashes, her dark eyes were far from simple.

As Thomas walked away, Iris’s eyes involuntarily cataloged every detail of the corridor.

Eight paces to the archway. Four exits out of the lower hall, two of which are unguarded after sunset. Thomas’s stance is front-heavy on his right side; his left collarbone sits completely exposed beneath his leather tunic.

She exhaled slowly through her nose, clearing her mind. It was a habit she couldn't break—an instinctual, quiet awareness that constantly calculated the layout of every room she entered.

Further down the hall, a kitchen servant carrying a heavy tray of silver cutlery stumbled over a raised flagstone. A long, sharp iron carving knife slipped from the edge of the platter, plunging silently toward the floor behind Iris.

Without turning her head, without even looking up from her bucket, Iris’s hand shot out like a strike of lightning. Her fingers closed around the bone handle mid-air, a hair’s breadth before the blade could shatter against the stone floor.

The servant blinked, gasping in shock at the impossible speed.

Before the boy could make sense of what he had just seen, Iris smoothly slid the knife into the pocket of her faded apron, her face immediately flattening back into a blank, dull expression. She looked up at him with timid eyes, placing a finger gently over her lips. The boy, terrified of getting in trouble with Beta Thomas, nodded frantically and hurried away.

A commotion near the top of the grand staircase drew the attention of the remaining servants.

Alpha Ronan stepped down into the main hall. He was striking, tall, and broad-shouldered, carrying the effortless, regal arrogance of a born ruler. His dark hair was swept back, and his sharp, golden-brown eyes radiated immense power. The pack respected him fiercely—he was a brilliant military strategist and a formidable warrior, though he moved through the pack house with a cool, emotionally distant aura that kept everyone at arm's length.

Beside him walked Cynthia, the daughter of the wealthy Western Pack leader. She looked radiant, clad in a crimson silk gown that rustled against the stone steps, her golden hair styled in elaborate coils studded with sea pearls. She was the obvious Luna candidate—wealthy, high-born, and possessing a powerful wolf line.

As Cynthia passed the servants, she looked down at Iris kneeling in the cold puddle, casting her a glare of pure, pitying disdain before turning to laugh charm-filled words into Ronan's ear. Ronan didn't glance at Iris; his eyes remained fixed straight ahead, cold and unreadable.

Iris squeezed the wet rag in her hand, watching them vanish into the Great Hall where the drums were beginning to beat.

Two passing servant girls paused near her bucket, whispering excitedly to one another.

"Did you see her dress? Cynthia is practically wearing the Luna crown already," one whispered.

"It doesn't matter who else lines up tonight," the other replied, giggling. "Tonight, the Alpha will choose his Luna."

Iris lowered her gaze back to the cold water in her washbucket, touching her chest where a faint, strange warmth was beginning to flicker deep behind her ribs.

Maybe tonight... she thought quietly, pulling her apron tight around her shoulders. ...If the Goddess truly gives me a mate... maybe I'll finally have a place where nobody calls me defective.
