Chapter 4

Lina’s POV

I arrived while the gala was in full swing. Red dress, black heels, hair up. I didn’t look like someone grieving, but more like a woman on a rampage.

People whispered as I walked through. Conversations stopped, but I ignored them and kept walking.

Then I saw it. As expected, Cara sat in the seat reserved for the Don's wife. Everyone's eyes were on her. Nobody knew I was his wife.

It was supposed to be revealed after the final contract signing tomorrow—our wedding anniversary.

Just as Kane saw me, I beelined for Daniel's table. He kissed the back of my hand.

“I knew something had shifted a few seconds ago. Turns out the most gorgeous woman in the world walked into the room,” he said, winking.

My face flushed a deep red. I quickly sat in the seat he pulled out for me.

As the event went on, I felt eyes boring into my head. I made eye contact with Kane; his jaw tightened. Cara was talking to him, but his eyes remained on me.

I held his gaze for a short while, then looked away and smiled brightly at Daniel.

“Is she the Don's wife? She is so lucky,” a girl gushed behind me.

“Are you kidding? Imagine being Don Reed's wife. He's the most gorgeous man on the planet. I pray he agrees to my family's pleas to make me his wife.”

Daniel smirked, leaned in, and whispered in my ear, “I only have eyes on one woman.”

I shuddered, my cheeks turning bright red.

My eyes drifted to Kane. His darkened gaze zoned in on Daniel. He gripped the glass in his hand so tightly it shattered.

I rolled my eyes and excused myself to go to the restroom. As soon as I came out of a stall, I bumped into Cara.

She gasped as the contents of her bag spilled out; vitamins, an ultrasound document, and… her pregnancy test kit.

“Lina,” she muttered , feigning surprise. “I didn't intend to tell you in this manner. But, well, it was going to happen anyway.”

My lips stayed locked.

“Won't you ask me who's the father?”

I raised an eyebrow and smiled. “I trust your judgment, Cara. Whoever he is, he must be special and love you so much.”

“Yesss, he does. He can do anything for me, sis. Anything,” she smiled.

“You will be the godmother, right?” she beamed, like she'd just offered me a winning lottery ticket.

I scoffed, walked close to her, and in a swift movement, pulled my mom's necklace off her neck. She gasped, clutching her neck like I had hurt her.

“I thought I'd take this.”

I turned to leave. When I got to the door, I said in a low, dark voice, “Congratulations, Cara. I hope something doesn't happen to you like it did to me. That would be… disastrous, don't you think?”

I started walking out when suddenly she gasped and flung herself to the floor at my feet, then let out an ear-shattering scream.

“Lina, why would you push me? I know you lost your baby, but it wasn't my baby's fault!”

I furrowed my brows, but before I could speak, I was shoved to one side. Kane ran to Cara and picked her up.

“Are you okay?” he asked, fussing over her.

“No. It hurts, Kane, it hurts,” she cried, her face damp with tears.

Kane looked at me, lifted his hand, and—

Crack!

“Are you stupid?” he roared. “She's pregnant. How could you push her?”

My face snapped sideways. My cheek burned, and everything in me went still.

“Better pray nothing happens to her child, or else I'll kill you, you cheating scum! You still have to explain to me what the hell you're doing with that asshole Reed. Trying to make a fool out of me?”

“Oh my goodness, what do you think happened?” I heard someone ask as a crowd gathered.

“I think she pushed Don Kane's queen, who is pregnant.”

“She’s surely someone who wants the Don for herself,” another replied. “Even so, why hurt a baby? That's a loser move.”

“No. Everyone, please!” Cara cried as Kane carried her. “She's my cousin, and she just lost her baby. I'm sure that's what affected her mind. She's a good person.”

Tears filled my eyes. I blinked them away.

I pushed past the crowd with all my strength, rushing out into the dark night.

I looked up as tears slid down my cheeks. My eyes caught sight of two stars. My mind filled with my babies' voices crying. I touched my empty stomach.

“Little ones… Y-you didn't get the chance to come into the world, but I will still fight for you. Mommy will fight for you.”

Daniel drove me home. I headed straight to my office and pulled out the files.

In the living room, I took down all our pictures on the wall and shredded them to pieces. Then I left the documents on the table.

One read: Divorce Agreement.

And the other: Termination of Mafia Merger Agreement on Basis of Infidelity and Treachery.

I took my bag, filled with my parents' belongings, and walked out. One final time.

Daniel's driver opened the door. As his car drove toward the main road, Kane's car zoomed past, both headlights flashing a goodbye. Looking back, I could see Cara's head leaning on his shoulder.

I rolled down the window with a smile and threw my wedding ring into the wind.

They had ruined my life. Their happiness… ended tonight.
