Chapter 1 of From His Stepping Stone to Queen

The year I turned seventeen, I gave up the Caldwell family fortune for a poor student named Rhys. I gave him everything I had—my pride, my connections, my loyalty. I helped him build his empire from the ground up, transforming him from a penniless student into a celebrated tech mogul. For seven years, I stood by his side as his fiancée, his partner, his companion.

Then, he pushed me off our sailboat and into a stormy sea, trading me for a younger influencer.

I should have died. But instead, I woke up at seventeen again, back in the shabby student apartment where our story began. This time, I knew the truth: Rhys didn’t want a partner. He wanted a stepping stone.

So, I’ll give him exactly what he deserves: a spectacular fall from grace.

This time, I’ll choose a man who knows my worth. And when Rhys comes crawling back, begging for the woman he threw away, I will make him understand: some mistakes don't get a second chance.

1

At twenty-nine, my seven-year engagement to Rhys Shaw ended as a cruel joke.

On our sailboat in the waters of Long Island, we argued all the way from the cabin to the deck, finally confronting each other in the midst of a raging storm. My composure shattered. All I wanted was to rip the mask off the man standing before me.

"Rhys!" I jabbed a finger at his chest. "How dare you call yourself CEO? I’ve been with you since I was seventeen. When you were just a scholarship kid with nothing, I helped you build this company from scratch. And for what? So you can chase some influencer with a little online clout? Do they even acknowledge I co-founded this company?"

A calculating glint flashed in his eyes. I knew that look—it was his cold-blooded nature surfacing. I once adored those eyes, the same ones that had mapped out our entire future. Now, they were just ice.

"Drop the act, Camila Caldwell." His voice deepened, laced with danger. "You were the one who wanted to 'experience the life of an ordinary person.' You showed up at my apartment at seventeen, crying and begging me to rescue you from that gilded cage. Now you want to play the victim?"

My chest tightened, a sharp pain lancing through it.

"What did you just say?" My voice trembled, not with fear, but with pure rage. "I begged you? Rhys, you were the one who promised we would be together forever. You were the one who said I was your only partner."

"That was then," he said, his gaze drifting away. "People change, Camila. I'm the CEO of a pre-IPO company. I have an empire to manage. I'm not that kid in a garage who only had you."

I laughed, a bitter, broken sound. The cold rain mixed with my tears, stinging my eyes.

"So now that you've made it, you’re breaking off the engagement? You want a prettier trophy on your arm?"

"Yes," he said, turning back to face me, his gaze frigid. "The engagement is off."

My rage boiled over. I lunged at him, and we collided, shoving each other on the violently swaying deck. But the deck was slick with rain, and with one hard shove, he sent me flying overboard.

The shock of the icy seawater stole the air from my lungs. Then, there was only blackness.

When I woke up, the stale, sour smell of old pizza and cheap beer assaulted my senses, and my nose wrinkled in disgust.

I opened my eyes to sunlight streaming through a grimy window. I was in a rundown off-campus apartment in New Haven, the walls covered in yellowed posters of tech idols and hastily drawn business models. The sheets on the narrow bed beneath me were a tangle of faded, wrinkled white.

I froze, raising a hand to my face.

My skin was smooth, firm. I even smelled faintly of the clean, cheap soap of a college student.

I was seventeen again, back before I’d dropped out of school.

Back then, I thought this place was a sanctuary, the starting point of our dreams. A place where Rhys and I stood against the world.

Now I saw it for what it was: a garbage dump wrapped in idealism.

I still can't believe I traded my family’s Hamptons estate to slum it in a tiny rented room with a broke college kid.

My family was East Coast old money, and my parents had raised me as their princess. They had my life perfectly mapped out: graduate from Yale, join the family’s investment group, marry an heir from an equally prominent family, and become a respected society doyenne.

Our worlds should never have collided—a girl from a world of privilege and a boy like Rhys, who had nothing to his name.

But then came the campus fundraising gala.

I was doing research for a sociology class and passed a secluded alcove. There, I saw Rhys cornered by a group of preppy, well-dressed rich kids, mocking his ill-fitting, cheap suit.

After they finally sauntered off, laughing, I saw him standing alone in the shadows, dressed only in a faded shirt. His fists were clenched, and a fire of resentment and ambition flickered in his gaze. He looked like he was seconds away from snapping.

I was so foolish back then, my heart ached for him. I should have walked away, but I couldn’t.

Like an idiot, I stepped in, even flagging down a server to get him a fresh glass of champagne.

"Hey, are you okay?"

The boy forced his head up, his eyes defiant and dangerous. "Aren't you afraid of getting on their bad side?"

My voice trembled. "They were out of line. You shouldn't have to take that."

He let out a harsh, cold laugh, turning away to feign interest in the paintings on the wall.

I stood there like a fool, feeling sorry for his bruised pride until the gala ended. Later, I anonymously paid his next year’s tuition.

I thought that was the end of it.

But a few days later, Rhys strutted into my usual coffee shop as if he owned the place.
