Chapter 2

I set up the company myself, so I knew exactly where the surveillance cameras were and where the blind spots were.

The organizer was Lisa Griffin. At my words, she immediately turned deathly pale.

Our colleagues in the audience began nodding. They clearly agreed we should pull up the surveillance footage.

Lisa dropped her voice to a whisper, saying, "I suggest you drop this."

I found it ridiculous. "You're trying to steal my prize, and now you want me to drop it? What gave you the nerve?"

Lisa swept me with a cold glance and scoffed, as if she couldn't believe I had the audacity to ask that.

"Because Katie is Mr. Cosby's girlfriend. He personally told me to reserve this prize for her."

I was stunned, and then a wave of anger rose inside me.

I let Vincent run the company so he could win Grandpa's approval sooner. I also didn't tell him who I really was because I didn't want him to feel inferior to me.

Instead, I used my resources to help him behind the scenes. He had even vowed to marry me on the day the company went public.

I never expected to hear about Vincent's affair before our wedding even took place.

Thinking I was intimidated, Lisa continued arrogantly, "If you keep being stubborn, you might not keep your job here for long. Katie and I are besties. If you mess with me, you're messing with Mr. Cosby."

I snorted. "Fine. Have Vincent come here and tell me himself. Then I'll let Katie have the first prize."

Lisa looked at me in disdain. "You? Who do you think you are? Mr. Cosby is a very busy man. He doesn't have time for this."

Holding back my rage, I texted Vincent immediately and asked him to come over. I was still holding onto my last sliver of hope.

Onstage, the lucky draw was still going on.

Blushing, Katie said, "I'll go for the three-day vacation. I want to relax with my boyfriend for a few days."

In the audience, some colleagues started joking.

"Katie, you've only just started your internship, yet you never wear the same luxury item twice. Your boyfriend must be really rich, right?"

"That's right. You and your boyfriend seem really sweet. Who knows what the future holds?"

"Come to think of it, Katie's been awfully close with Mr. Cosby lately. She spends a lot of time in his office…"

Blushing, Katie stammered. "Once he agrees, I'll tell everyone who he is."

Since she didn't deny it, her vague response immediately fueled everyone's curiosity.

At that moment, someone exclaimed, "Oh? Mr. Cosby's here."

I followed everyone's gaze and saw Vincent standing in the doorway. He met Katie's eyes from afar, a fond smile on his face.

"Speaking of the devil…"

"Damn! Don't tell me these two are really…"

I lost my patience completely and raised my voice, breaking the intimate atmosphere.

"Mr. Cosby, you're just in time. I have a question for you. I clearly won the grand prize, so how did it end up being Katie's?"

Vincent saw me, and panic flickered in his eyes. He instinctively opened his mouth, as though to say, "How could it be you…"

Seeing his reaction, I lost all hope.

If any ordinary employee had won the grand prize, they would probably have had to give in under Lisa's pressure just to keep their job.

But of all people, I, Vincent's secret girlfriend, won the grand prize.

He hadn't expected me to catch him manipulating things behind the scenes.

Lisa hurried forward and twisted the story against me.

"Mr. Cosby, you're just in time! Harriet only won a plushie, yet she's insisting she won the grand prize and is making a fuss. You have to back me up!"

I stared at Vincent coldly. "Mr. Cosby, you owe me an explanation."

If he were willing to admit he no longer loved me, I would be willing to end things on good terms.

Vincent looked at me, took a deep breath, and said calmly, "Harriet, I know you've been working here for years, and you're upset about not winning the grand prize. I can compensate you later, but I won't let you take Katie's prize."

Chapter 3

Hearing Vincent's words, I felt my blood run cold instantly. He had chosen to side with Lisa and Katie.

My colleagues, who had been watching from the sidelines, immediately switched sides after hearing what he said.

"Mr. Cosby has already spoken. I bet Harriet's lying."

"Exactly. Harriet's a senior here. Does she really have to take the grand prize from an intern? If she can't handle losing, she shouldn't participate."

"All for 50 thousand dollars? She's got no shame at all."

My colleagues' accusations cut right through me.

I fixed my gaze on Vincent, my voice cold. "Vincent, look me in the eye and tell me the truth. Do you really not know what's going on? Can you honestly say you didn't have Lisa rig the grand prize for Katie?"

Vincent's eyes flickered. "Harriet, stop being unreasonable!"

As soon as he said that, Katie's eyes immediately reddened. Her voice quivered, on the verge of breaking.

"Harriet, I know you're upset, but I really want to go abroad and see what it's like out there. I come from a poor family, and I've only left the city a few times in my life.

"Now that I finally have the chance, please don't make this hard for me and let me go," Katie begged, tears spilling down her cheeks. Her shoulders shook slightly, as if she had been wronged.

Lisa immediately stepped forward, gently patting Katie's back and rolling her eyes at me.

"Harriet, if it's not yours, don't take it. Katie comes from a poor family, but she works hard. She's a lovely young woman.

"I'm not the only one who feels for her. Mr. Cosby's always looked out for her as well! Now that he's standing up for her today, you're not getting what you want!"

At her words, everyone looked at Katie and Vincent differently.

"Lisa is Katie's best friend. She must know something."

"No wonder Katie wears luxury items all the time. So…"

"Looks like she's going to be our boss' wife soon."

Whispers spread through the crowd. Katie's face grew even redder, but she didn't deny it. Instead, she looked at Vincent quietly, as if he were the only person she could rely on.

Watching everything unfold before me, I couldn't help but laugh at myself. Over the past year, I had stood by Vincent's side as he went through all the hardships of building his company.

I even used my own resources to pave the way for him, but all I got in return was betrayal and lies.

I stopped laughing, my gaze instantly turning cold. I ripped my work badge off my chest and tossed it aside carelessly.

"Fine. I won't take it. You can have the grand prize. Also, I quit."

I always knew when to hold on and when to walk away. It wasn't too late to cut my losses now.

Vincent's expression shifted. He immediately stepped forward and got in my way.

"Harriet, no one said you're getting fired. You don't have to leave. You're a senior here. No one's going to mind."

I walked around him and let out a mocking laugh.

"But you're a hypocrite, and I can't stand this place."

With that, I turned and left.

Vincent was about to say more, but Katie held him back. "Mr. Cosby, I'm so happy. I finally get to go abroad and see the world. I didn't realize you still remembered that I liked Marosa…"

In the end, Vincent didn't go after me.

After leaving the office, I immediately dialed my grandfather's number.

"Hey, Harriet. How have you been lately? Did you miss me?"

Hearing Grandpa's voice on the other end, my nose stung. He never supported my relationship with Vincent as he couldn't bear to see me suffer.

But I stood my ground and even pestered Grandpa into giving Vincent resources. I never expected he would turn out to be so ungrateful.

I wiped my tears away and took a deep breath.

"Grandpa, I've thought it through. I'm done going through hardships with Vincent. I want to take back everything I gave him. I want him to lose everything!"

Chapter 4

Grandpa could tell something was off and asked anxiously, "Harriet, what happened? Did that Vincent guy mistreat you?"

I told Grandpa everything that had happened. After hearing my story, he flew into a rage.

"Whatever you plan to do to get back at him, you'll always have my support.

"We may not have much, but we've got plenty of money and businesses. We can grind him down if we need to!"

A warmth spread through me, and I hummed in response.

That night, I let myself process all my emotions and actually slept really well.

The next day, Vincent's call jolted me from my sleep. "Harriet, stop throwing a tantrum. I just felt bad for Katie because she comes from a poor family, and I thought of helping her. There was nothing else to it."

I didn't hold back and said, "Many employees in your company are supporting their families too. Why don't you feel bad for all of them?"

Seeing that I refused to give in, Vincent finally lost his patience.

"Harriet, you've been through a lot helping me build this business. You've put so much into it. We're so close to going public.

"Are you really going to walk away like this? If you really choose to walk away, there won't be a place for you here anymore."

I sneered. I had been wondering where Vincent got his confidence from. So he was betting on the fact that I cared about the company.

Even if I were upset, I would eventually give in and come crawling back. Once I went back, it would happen again—perhaps two or three more times.

Vincent could use that excuse to keep me under his thumb.

But there was just one little problem—I didn't give a crap about his business. A company like that wasn't even worth my time.

And that wasn't just it. I would destroy everything Vincent was so proud of.

Still looking smug, Vincent continued, "I'm attending Ruby Group's bidding conference in a few days. If all goes well, I expect to break into A9 within a year.

"You do know this, right? Ruby Group has always valued me. It's already in the bag."

Hearing that, I stifled a laugh.

Ruby Group? That was my family's company, wasn't it?

Back then, I had used my family's resources to help Vincent pave the way forward. Was he really so naive as to think he had succeeded entirely on his own?

Not only would Vincent lose the bid, but I would also use my company's influence to crush him completely.

I didn't say any of that and looked at him meaningfully. "Fine. We'll see who comes out on top."

Over the next few days, I started getting involved in the company's operations to gain experience. As the only daughter in the family, I had always gotten whatever I asked for. No one in the company dared challenge me either, and things were going a little too smoothly.

Soon, the day of the bidding conference arrived. As the organizer, I arrived early to oversee the setup. I was so busy that I didn't even notice Katie and Vincent approaching me arm in arm.

"Harriet? What brings you here?" He sounded shocked, staring at me in disbelief.

I was slightly annoyed as I hadn't meant to reveal my identity so soon.

Katie spoke up first, raising her voice slightly. "Harriet, I didn't expect you'd fallen so far that you're working as a janitor now."

Vincent's expression instantly became unreadable. He looked smug yet sympathetic, but above all, he couldn't hide his sense of superiority.

He sighed. "Look at you. Why did you have to quit out of spite? Now you've ended up at rock bottom, working as a janitor and sorting through junk."

I didn't know what gave them that idea, but I didn't argue.

Vincent deliberately led Katie over to me. "I asked Katie to join me for the conference today. If all goes well, she'll be promoted to supervisor soon."

Pride flickered in her eyes, though she spoke shyly. "If Vincent hadn't taught me all he knew, I wouldn't have improved this fast."

Vincent clearly wanted to see me upset and regretful, but he got nothing. I just smiled at him and turned to leave.

Soon, the bidding conference began. The emcee invited the CEO of Ruby Group to the stage.

Vincent was confidently bragging to Katie. "Their CEO really thinks highly of me. We go way back."

As soon as I stepped out, he began to panic.
