Chapter 1

Sophia stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of her penthouse apartment, gazing out at the breathtaking view of the city skyline. Tonight was her first anniversary with James, and she had planned a romantic evening to remember.

But as the hours ticked by, her excitement turned to worry. Where was my husband, James? He had promised to be home early, but now the sun was setting, and I was starting to feel a knot in my stomach.

Just as she was about to call him, she heard the door open. Her heart skipped a beat, and she rushed to greet him, expecting a bouquet of flowers and a loving smile. Instead, James walked in looking tired, his eyes avoiding hers.

"Hey, sorry I'm late," he said, dropping his keys on the counter.

"Where were you?" She asked, trying to keep her tone light.

He hesitated, then said, "I had to pick Rachel up from the airport."

Sophia's heart sank. Rachel, his ex-girlfriend. She felt sad knowing he was out with her.

"Why did you have to pick her up?" She asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

James shrugged. "She needed a ride, and I was in the area."

Sophia frowned, feeling a pang of disappointment and jealousy. "And you didn't think to tell me?"

He sighed. "I didn't think it was a big deal."

She stood there, feeling like their anniversary had been ruined. "Are you hungry?" She asked, gesturing to the dinner spread. It was obvious she was trying hard to avoid a fight.

James shook his head. "I already ate, thanks. Rachel and I grabbed something on the way home."

Sophia felt a chill run down her spine. He had eaten with his ex-girlfriend on our anniversary. I didn't know what to say or do.

Sophia stood there, feeling like she'd been slapped in the face. He had eaten with Rachel, on our anniversary. The thought of it made my stomach turn.

"James, can we talk?" She asked, trying to keep her voice steady and calm.

He nodded, finally looking at her. "What's up?"

She took a deep breath. "Why did you feel the need to pick her up from the airport? And why did you eat with her?"

James sighed. "Look, I know it seems weird, but Rachel's going through a tough time. She is healing from a terrible heartbreak and just got back to the country. She needed a friend."

Sophia chuckled and raised an eyebrow. "A friend? You're her ex-boyfriend, James. And you're married to me now."

He rubbed his temples. "I know, I know. It was a mistake. I shouldn't have eaten with her."

She felt a lump form in her throat. "That's not the only thing you shouldn't have done. You shouldn't have picked her up from the airport without telling me. You shouldn't have spent time with her on our anniversary."

James looked at her, his eyes filled with regret. "I'm sorry, okay? I was trying to be a good person, but I ended up hurting you instead."

Sophia shook her head. “I'm off to bed.” she said, before walking out on him.

“Oh common, Sophia. You need not do this. Please. I am sorry.” He shouted, running after her.

Right inside the bedroom, he pulled her close. Her eyes were red with tears already.

“I'm sorry my lady. I was just in the area and she needed my help. That's all.” James explained.

“And she had no one else to call but you, huh!” She looked at him, my voice trembling.

“Shush! I don't want to see you cry. It won't happen again.” he said, patting her back and stroking her hair.

Even though she was trying so hard to not fall for James’ words, she couldn't help it. She slowly dozed off in his cozy arms, as he stroked her hair.

Chapter 2

JAMES POV

I woke up feeling refreshed and grateful. Sophia had accepted my apology last night, and I was relieved that we were okay. As I got ready for work, Sophia came into the bathroom, smiling at me in the mirror.

"Hey, good morning," she said, her voice cheerful.

I smiled back, feeling a sense of normalcy. "Hey, good morning. How are you?"

Sophia shrugged. "I'm good. Just getting ready for work."

I nodded, tying my tie. "Yeah, me too. I'm glad we talked last night."

Sophia nodded, her eyes sparkling. "Me too. I'm glad we're okay."

I felt a sense of gratitude towards her. She had every right to be angry, but instead, she was forgiving and understanding.

As we headed to the kitchen for breakfast, Sophia chatted about her day ahead, and I listened intently. We talked about our plans for the weekend, and I mentioned a new restaurant I wanted to try.

Sophia's eyes lit up. "That sounds great! I'd love to try it with you."

I smiled, feeling happy that we were back to normal. As we finished up breakfast and headed out the door, I took Sophia's hand.

"Thanks for understanding, Sophia," I said, looking into her eyes. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

Sophia smiled, squeezing my hand. "You'll never have to find out.”

As we walked to the car, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Sophia's forgiveness. I knew I didn't deserve it, but I was determined to make it up to her.

When we arrived at the office, Sophia gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before heading to her own desk. I watched her go, feeling a sense of pride and love for my wife.

The day flew by in a blur of meetings and conference calls. But no matter how busy I was, my mind kept wandering back to Sophia and how much I appreciated her.

At lunchtime, I sent her a text. "Hey, beautiful. Want to grab lunch together?"

She responded almost immediately. "I'd love to. Meet you at the café downstairs?"

I smiled, feeling a sense of excitement. It was moments like these that I cherished, just being able to spend time with Sophia and enjoy each other's company.

As we sat down at a quiet table in the café, Sophia reached out and took my hand. "I'm glad we're okay, James," she said, looking into my eyes.

I squeezed her hand. "Me too, Sophia. Me too."

We chatted and laughed together, enjoying our lunch and each other's company. It was a normal, everyday moment, but it felt special to me. I knew that I had almost lost this, almost lost Sophia, and it made me appreciate her even more.

Just as we were enjoying our lunch and each other's company, my phone rang. I hesitated, feeling a sense of unease. I didn't want to answer it, didn't want to disrupt this moment with Sophia.

But Sophia noticed my hesitation. "Go ahead, James. Answer it."

I sighed, feeling a sense of dread. I glanced at the screen and saw Rachel's name flashing. My heart sank.

"Hey, I should take this," I said, getting up from the table.

Sophia nodded, her expression understanding. "Okay, go ahead."

I walked outside, answering the call. "Hey, Rachel. What's up?"

"James, I need to talk to you about something," Rachel said, her voice sounding urgent.

I felt a sense of unease, wondering what she wanted. "What is it?"

"I'll tell you when I see you. Can we meet up later?"

I hesitated, feeling a sense of discomfort. I didn't want to meet up with Rachel, didn't want to get pulled back into whatever drama she had going on.

But I also didn't want to be rude. "Fine, yeah. When and where?"

We made plans to meet up later that day, and I hung up the phone feeling uneasy. I didn't want to go, didn't want to deal with Rachel's drama. But I also didn't want to hurt her, I didn't want to be a jerk.

As I walked back inside, Sophia looked up at me with a questioning expression. "Everything okay?"

I hesitated, not wanting to lie to her. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just Rachel being Rachel."

Sophia's expression turned skeptical. "What does that mean?"

I sighed, feeling a sense of unease. "I don't know, Sophia. I'll tell you later, okay?”

I sat back down at the table, trying to shake off the feeling of unease that had settled over me. I reached out, trying to grab Sophia's hand, but she pulled away.

"Not now, James," she said, her voice cool.

I felt a pang of disappointment, but I tried to understand. "Hey, I'm sorry about that. I know I shouldn't have taken the call."

Sophia sighed, her expression unreadable. "It's not just that, James. It's...I don't know, it feels like you're still tied to her in some way."

I shook my head, trying to reassure her. "I'm not, Sophia. I promise. Rachel is just...a part of my past, that's all."

Sophia looked at me skeptically. "A part of your past that you're still dealing with, apparently."

I felt a surge of frustration, but I tried to stay calm. "Sophia, please. Let's not do this here."

But Sophia just stood up, her eyes flashing. "I need some space, James. Can we talk about this later?"

I nodded, feeling a sense of defeat. "Yeah, of course. I'll talk to you later."

As Sophia walked away, I couldn't help but feel like I was losing her. Like I was still stuck in the past, and it was threatening to destroy my future with the woman I loved.

***********************

I watched Sophia walk away, feeling a sense of unease. I knew I had to make things right with her, but first, I had to deal with Rachel.

I got up from the table, feeling a sense of dread. I didn't want to go to this meeting, didn't want to face Rachel and whatever drama she had brought into my life again.

But I knew I had to. I had to know what she wanted, had to put an end to whatever was going on between us once and for all.

I made my way to the coffee shop where we were supposed to meet, my heart heavy with anticipation.

*******************

I walked into the coffee shop, scanning the room for Rachel. I spotted her in the corner, her face red and puffy from crying. She looked up and saw me, and a fresh wave of tears streamed down her face.

"James," she sobbed, her voice shaking. "I'm so glad you came."

I sat down across from her, feeling a pang of concern. "What's wrong, Rachel? What's going on?"

Rachel sniffled, wiping her nose with a tissue. "It's...it's Alex. He wants to take custody of Emily."

My eyes widened in surprise. Alex was Rachel's ex-boyfriend, and Emily was their two-year-old daughter.

"What? Why?" I asked, trying to process this new information.

Rachel shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "He says I'm an unfit mother, that I'm too selfish and too focused on my career. He wants to take her away from me."

I felt a surge of anger towards Alex. How could he do this to Rachel?

"Rachel, I'm so sorry," I said, reaching out to take her hand. "We'll figure something out, okay? We'll get a lawyer and fight this."

Rachel nodded, her eyes welling up with tears again. "Thank you, James. Just knowing you're here for me makes me feel a little better."

As I sat there, holding Rachel's hand and trying to comfort her, I couldn't help but think of Sophia. I knew I had to tell her about this, and I had to explain why I was here with Rachel. But for now, I just sat there, trying to be a friend to someone who needed me.

Chapter 3

SOPHIA'S POV

She stormed through the front door of her house, slamming it behind her. She was furious, hurt, and feeling utterly betrayed. James had promised her he was done with Rachel, that he was committed to their relationship. But then she saw him take her call, saw him leave to meet her. It felt like a stab in the chest.

I couldn't believe I had been so blind, so stupid. I thought we had something real, something special. But I guess I was just a fool. She thought to herself.

She walked into the living room, dropping her bag onto the couch. She couldn't even look at the photos of them together, couldn't bear to remember the happy times. It all felt like a lie now.

She thought about all the times James had reassured me, all the times he had told her he loved her. But it was all just words, empty words.

She felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to cry. She wasn't not willing to give him the satisfaction of seeing her hurt.

Instead, she walked into the kitchen, pouring herself a glass of wine. She needed something to take the edge off, something to numb the pain.

As she stood there, sipping her wine, she couldn't help but wonder what James was doing right now. Was he with Rachel? Was he comforting her, holding her hand?

The thought made her sick to her stomach.

“I didn't know how much more of this I could take. I didn't know if I could ever trust James again.” She muttered, amidst sobs.

And as she stood there, feeling lost and alone, she realized that she might have to make a choice. A choice between her heart and her sanity.

********************

Just as she was starting to calm down, she heard the front door open. James walked in, looking sheepish and guilty.

She tried to walk away from him but he held her hand and pulled her close.

"Sophia, I can explain..." He started, but she cut him off.

"Explain what, James? How you're still stuck on your ex-girlfriend? How you leave in the middle of our date to attend to your ex-girlfriend?"

James took a few steps forward, his hand outstretched.

"Sophia, please listen to me. I know I should not have done that, but I love you."

But she was beyond reason, she was hurt, angry, and fed up already.

"So why did she call you?"

James sighed before rubbing his temples. "She's just in trouble. Her ex husband is threatening to take their daughter away from her."

Sophia raised an eyebrow, her anger subsiding for a moment. "But why?"

"Well I never asked her actually. Maybe for some personal reasons."

James explained the situation, telling her about everything. Sophia felt a pang of sympathy for Rachel, but her anger at James still simmered.

"So, out of all the people on earth, she chooses to call my husband?" She said, her voice bitter. "And you, of course, drop everything to help her."

James sighed. "Look babe, I know it looks that way, but I swear, Sophia, I'm only trying to help."

Sophia shook my head, still trying to process everything. "I need space, James. Just go be with her, since that's who you wanna be with."

James' eyes widened in shock. "Sophia, no. Please don't say that."

But she was resolute. She had made up her mind already and there was no going back. She wanted to be away from him for a while.

Forever yours, My Wife
