Chapter 3

Eva's fingertips trembled against the glossy paper. She leaned closer, her eyes tracing every line of the second photograph, desperate to find the flaw.

It was flawless. It was impossible.

"This has to be edited," she whispered, her voice sounding hollow in the cavernous suite. "Someone photoshopped this."

Julian let out a sound that was dangerously close to a smile.

"Five years ago?"

Photoshop of this caliber didn't exist in a casual snapshot half a decade ago.

Eva refused to let the ice in her chest paralyze her. Dragging her gaze away from his suffocating stare, she snatched her phone from her clutch.

Her fingers flew across the screen, digging deep into her cloud storage, scrolling relentlessly backward .

Graduation photos. Smiles with college friends. Her twenty-first birthday party. Her first corporate internship.

See? she wanted to scream at him.

Then, her thumb froze.

She stared at the digital timeline, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of her neck. Between May and August of that year, the grid was entirely blank.

No beach trips. Not a single accidental screenshot. An unbroken, three-month void in a life she thought she remembered perfectly.

She had never noticed it before.

Julian's  gaze tracked the sudden drainage of color from her face. He stepped closer, his jaw tightening as he watched her hands begin to visibly shake.

If this was an act, she was a masterpiece.

His Jaw tightened, If she wasn't lying, he'd spent five years hunting the wrong target.

The thought hit him like a physical blow, threatening the foundation of everything he believed.

He buried the doubt instantly, his expression hardening back into a mask of pure granite. "Keep pretending, Eva. But the helpless victim routine is getting old."

A knock cut through the suffocating tension.

The door clicked open, and a senior maid bowed her head, keeping her eyes strictly on the floor. "Mr. Castellan. Madam Isabella requests the bride's presence in the drawing-room immediately."

Eva caught the subtle shift in Julian's posture.  Even the monster answered to someone.

"We will be right down," Julian commanded.

---

Grandmother Isabella sat in a velvet armchair as if the room belonged to her. silver hair pinned smooth, posture perfect, she lifted her gaze and took Eva In -Slowly, Once like a decision.

Isabella didn't say congratulations.

She simply gestured for them to stand before her.

"How long have you been in love with my grandson, child?" Isabella asked softly.

Eva felt Julian's  rigid stillness beside her. He was waiting to see if she would play the doting, submissive bride.

She swallowed the lump of fear in her throat.

"I wasn't supposed to marry him," Eva said clearly.

"No one moved. Even the air felt paused."

Julian's hand gripped her elbow, his fingers locking around her skin like a vice. "Eva is tired, Grandmother," he interrupted, his voice smooth but laced with a lethal warning.

Isabella's gaze flicked from Julian's tight grip to the defiant tilt of Eva's chin.

A faint, unreadable expression passed over the old woman's face. She noticed the lack of warmth.

"Indeed," Isabella murmured, waving a dismissive, diamond-encrusted hand. "Leave us for a moment, Julian. I wish to speak with my granddaughter-in-law alone later.

For now, a word with you."

---

Inside the drawing-room, Isabella waited until the latch clicked before looking up at her grandson.

"Is she the girl?" Isabella asked, her voice dropping all pretense of gentleness.

Julian stared at the closed door, his mind flashes of Eva's pale, terrified face over her phone gallery. "She claims she doesn't remember me."

Isabella's hand tightened on the armrest of her chair, her regal composure fracturing for a fraction of a second.

"Julian," Isabella whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "If she truly doesn't remember... you need to find out who touched her mind."

---

Down the hall, back in the safety of the bridal suite, Eva wasn't crying.

She walked over to the desk where the two photographs lay. There was one detail she hadn't checked.

With trembling fingers, she picked up the recent, un-faded photograph-the one where she was laughing so genuinely beside Julian-and flipped it over.

Written in elegant, faded blue ink across the back was a messy, handwritten note: Forever. Below the script, two initials were bound together. J ❤️ E.

The handwriting was unmistakably her own.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, No one could forge the exact, unique slant of her 'E'.

Numb with shock, Eva's eyes dropped to the very bottom edge of the photo, where a precise digital timestamp was printed in tiny gray numbers.

She read the date.  her breath completely abandoning her lungs.

October 14th.

It was the exact same date she had spent fighting for her life in an ICU bed, recovering from a catastrophic car accident that her family told her had happen during a solo weekend trip.

"No..." Eva whispered, the room spinning around her.

Her family hadn't saved her life after the accident.

They had rewritten it.
