Chapter 1 of My Girlfriend’s Senior Student Drowned and She Forced Me to Save Her

We were beach camping the day it all fell apart. My girlfriend, Sophia Hawthorne, pushed me—me, the guy with a heart condition—to dive in and save her drowning friend.

I dragged him out, nearly killing myself in the process, but she didn't even look at me. She just whisked him off to the hospital. And me? I was left there on the beach, gasping for breath.

"Alexander Knight, I'm telling you to save him! Get Lucas out of the water!" Sophia screamed, her white dress whipping around her legs like she was the storm itself.

Her nails dug into my arm as she yanked at me, desperate.

"He's a freaking state swimming champ! How the hell is he even drowning?" I stared at Lucas, just floating there in the shallow waves. "And I have a heart condition!"

"You've had heart problems your whole life, and you've never died, right? I don't care! Go save him now, or I swear I'll never speak to you again!"

She was wild-eyed, her words cutting through me like shards of glass.

I wasn't having an episode yet, but my chest tightened, the warning signs creeping in.

The idea of her walking away scared me more than any medical diagnosis. More than death itself.

So, I went in. I waded through the water and grabbed Lucas Everett. He didn't even seem to be struggling. As I pulled him in, he leaned close, his voice a low whisper. "Twenty-one years, Alexander. You've been at Sophia's side for twenty-one years. And here she is, making you, with your heart condition, save me. Do you really think she cares? Watch—once we're on shore, if I play this right, she won't even look at you, no matter if you're lying there dying."

I fought the urge to shove his head back underwater, to let him choke on his smugness.

"Alexander, hurry up!" Sophia's voice pierced the air.

Swallowing my anger, I dragged Lucas onto the sand. The moment we hit the shore, my heart went haywire, skipping beats and pounding like a jackhammer. I dropped to my knees, feeling my pulse stutter and fade.

Lucas hit the ground beside me and put on his best helpless act. "Why'd you drop me, Alexander? I know you're pissed about me and Sophia, but messing around in a life-or-death moment like that? You're gonna get someone killed."

Sophia ran over, eyes wide, and Lucas, ever the performer, muttered just loud enough, "Why'd you do that?"

Sophia's gaze burned into me. "You've taken this too far. I'm really disappointed in you."

She didn't even look back at me as she helped Lucas up, cradling his head in her lap like he was the one who almost died.

But that spot was supposed to be mine.

"I'm not feeling well," I managed to whisper, my voice barely there, my chest on fire.

Sophia and I weren't blood, but we'd been inseparable since birth—literally. Born in the same hospital, less than a minute apart.

She always lorded those thirty seconds over me, demanding I treat her like an older sister, but it was always me who took care of her.

Since preschool, we'd been side by side. We used to nap in the same tiny bed because she'd cry her eyes out if I wasn't there.

In elementary school, we were inseparable, walking home hand in hand.

By middle school, she was always on the back of my bike, arms wrapped tight around my waist, her cheek resting against my shoulder.

High school was no different. Still together, still attached at the hip. We stumbled into love, a natural progression from everything we'd always been. One day she told me, "Alexander, you're my boyfriend, but you'll always be my rock. Always."

The year we took the SATs, I checked Sophia's scores and made sure I got into the same college as her.

By the second semester of freshman year, she couldn't stand her dorm anymore. "There are four girls, but we have eight group chats. It's insane. I can't deal with it. I need to move out." So, I rented us an apartment, and we moved in together.

She was barely keeping up with her classes, constantly lost in life, and to everyone else, she was just a pretty girl with no direction.

But to me, she was Sophia—my Sophia. She was perfect, flaws and all.

I kept taking care of her, more like a big brother than a boyfriend, handling everything.

That was until she met Lucas from the folk music club. Suddenly, it was all "Lucas this, Lucas that," every single day.

I told her she was crossing the line and that it was getting to me.

But she'd just cup my face, kiss me, and say, "Alex, you know you're mine, and I'm yours. Stop overthinking it."

You can't fake the way you look at someone when you're in love. I saw it in her eyes—she loved me.

So, I buried my doubts and trusted her.

But over time, her patience wore thin. She'd go out with Lucas, no explanations, no reassurance.

If I asked her about it, even just a little, she'd lash out, saying I was suffocating her, that she needed space.

And suddenly, it wasn't me suffocating her—it was her suffocating me.

"You're not gonna die!" Sophia's voice yanked me out of my thoughts.

She called out for help, and they took Lucas away.

And just like Lucas had said, she didn't even look at me—not even a glance.

I lay on the sand, clutching my chest, feeling like I was on the brink of passing out.

"Where's your medication?" A woman's voice asked, but it wasn't Sophia's.

Someone pressed the pills into my mouth, and gradually, I started to come around.

By the time I was fully conscious, the person who helped me was gone.

The beach was scattered with footprints, a mess of tracks everywhere, but I could still pick out which ones were Sophia's.

I knew because I loved her that much.

But she didn't care whether I lived or died. That realization cut deep—I wanted to cry.

But I couldn't.

And to my surprise, I wasn't as devastated as I thought I'd be.

What was going on?

Did I not love her anymore?
