Chapter 1
"What's wrong with you? Why should I bow to your late wife?"
***
On the day of the bride-picking ceremony, the wedding car suddenly changed its route and headed towards the countryside before stopping at the gate of a cemetery.
How did we get here? While I was wondering, the door of the car was opened.
"Bride, get off the car quickly," Garvin's aunt, Catalina Agler, said with a sinister smile on her face.
"What is this place? I won't get off." I refused to get off the car and Catalina's face changed immediately.
"Aren't you going to become a member of the Agler Family? Just bow and pay respects to the late elders of the Agler Family before the ceremony."
What era is this? Why is there still such a custom?
Why doesn't Garvin get off the car too to pay respects to his late elders?
"No, why didn't you tell me about this in advance? You can contact my elders and see what they say."
My face did not look good.
Before getting married, the elders in my family reminded me that the groom's parents might try to intimidate the new daughter-in-law, such as pretending not to hear when I addressed Garvin's mother as mom, not opening the door when I knocked, etc. I thought they were making a fuss about nothing, but I did not expect that Garvin's family started to make trouble before I even arrived at the wedding venue.
I turned my head to look at my groom, Garvin Agler, who had a disinterested look on his face.
"Just get off the car and pay respects to our late elders if I tell you to. It's not a big deal," said Catalina. After that, she called a few more women, all of whom were from her husband’s family and tried to drag me out of the car.
"I've never seen such an immature and ignorant bride. At that time, no woman dared to disobey, let alone bow to pay respects, even if we had to kneel for a whole night!"
Catalina pinched my arm hard and I screamed in pain, but Garvin seemed to be deaf.
"Wait a minute, I need my family to follow me," I said to Catalina after being dragged out of the car.
Surprisingly, as soon as I turned around, there was a car following right behind the wedding car. No wonder the driver drove fast and furious, I thought it was to get rid of the car behind.
"What family? Once a girl gets married, she will only have her husband's family. Stop making a fuss and go now."
Garvin also got off the car, lit a cigarette and leisurely followed behind.
I was wearing high heels and feeling quite uncomfortable being held on my arms by two women.
Halfway through, I suddenly remembered.
“Garvin, your hometown is in the countryside. Your dad and your grandpa's graves are in the countryside. Who’s buried in such a high-class cemetery?”
The two women glanced at each other and one of them said, "You'll know when you get there. No matter who they are, you have to bow, pay respects and ask for their blessing."
I immediately had the answer in my mind.
After walking for a long way, I finally came to a tombstone with the following words written on it, [Tomb of Maria Seraphine, the late wife of Garvin Agler.]
Damn it, you actually tricked me into coming here.
I was burning with anger. "Garvin, what do you mean? If you don't want to get married, then don't get married. What do you mean by asking me to bow and pay respects to your late wife?"
Garvin put out the cigarette in his hand and threw the butt on the ground.
"Anyway, she's also your elder sister. Isn't it right for you to pay your respects to her?" he said casually.
"If you still love her so much in your heart, you can hold onto her image for the rest of your life. Why marry me? Let me tell you, I won't bow to her today."
I took off my heels and tried to leave, but Garvin's mother, Regina Agler, stopped me.
"I never agreed with you being with my son in the first place. My son is a graduate student and you don't even have a high school degree. But Garvin is willing, so I can't say anything."
Garvin's mother was tall and thin, with high cheekbones and a mean look on her face.
"Maria is my former daughter-in-law. She is sensible and filial, but unfortunately, she had a bad fate. She passed away when she gave birth to my eldest grandson. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been your turn to step into our family."
Hearing what she said, I sneered and responded, "I'm not unaware of Maria's situation. She had gestational hypertension during her pregnancy and the doctors advised her to have an abortion to save her life. You couldn't bear to part with your grandson, so you let her endure it. Otherwise, she wouldn't have died."
"What nonsense are you talking about? That's maternal love, don't you understand it?" Catalina immediately refuted me.
"Then when your daughter gives birth, give her an opportunity to express her maternal love as well!" I retorted.
"You ...." Catalina was silenced, not knowing what to say.
I gave her a sideways glance, then looked at Regina and said irritably, "What do you mean by saying all this?"
Regina took two steps closer to me and said coldly, "I asked you to come here today for three main purposes."
"First, Maria is recognized by our whole family as a good daughter-in-law. You should learn from her, respect your parents-in-law, serve your husband and be a qualified and virtuous wife."
"Second, she is a hero in our family. You should recognize her as your elder sister, take care of her parents and visit her grave on your holidays."
"Third, she has already given birth to a boy for our family. You and Garvin can have a girl in the future. If you are pregnant with a boy, you must abort it."
What the hell is she saying!
It's simply unbelievable.
Who do they think they are? Controlling other people's lives as they please.
"Garvin, is that also what you mean?" I asked as I looked at the man who was standing beside me.
"Ophelia, what my mom said is not too much, right? After all, I got married to Maria first, so you should follow some rules as my second wife."
Damn the rules.
I threw directly one of the heels in my hand at Garvin and hit his forehead.
"What are you crazy about?"
The other one, I threw it directly at Regina's head.
"Open your eyes! Do you think you are God, controlling other people's lives as you please?
You really opened your eyes! Did you treat yourself like a prince taking concubines? Go and have fun by yourselves. I don't have to get married!"
Chapter 2
"Hold her, don't let her go!" Regina ordered and several women immediately grabbed me.
I was wearing a white long dress, which made it difficult for me to move around and now I could not move anymore.
"You have accepted the wedding gifts from our family and obtained the marriage certificate with Garvin, so you are now part of our family. How can a daughter-in-law disobey her mother-in-law? Kneel down and apologize quickly, don't delay the wedding ceremony!" Regina said viciously as she put her hands on her hips.
"Wedding gifts? I paid for all the houses in your family and your twelve thousand gifts can't even buy a bathroom. Do you want to play tricks? Let me tell you, you picked the wrong person!"
I grabbed a hairpin from my head and thrust it hard into Catalina's hand which was holding onto me.
"Ah, she stabbed me, she stabbed me!" Catalina screamed in pain.
"You're not short of money, but don't forget that your brother is about to take the college exam soon." Garvin snapped.
My parents passed away a long time ago and my younger brother was my only relative.
"You also know that I work at the Department of Education. With just one word from me, your brother doesn't even have the qualification for the college entrance exam." Garvin showed a smug smile on his face.
"Your brother has good grades in the summer, right? He's a good candidate for Decelis University. If he couldn't go to college because of you, how miserable he would be. If he had some depression and jumped off the building, that would be such a pity. Tsk tsk tsk ...."
I might not consider myself, but I must consider my brother.
"I'm telling you, stop being stubborn. If you bow and pay respects, you won't lose anything." Catalina came to pull me.
I shook her hand off and said, "In that case, let's each make concessions. I'll bow and pay respects to your late wife and you promise not to cause trouble for my family and ask the teacher to give my brother extra tutoring."
"It's a deal." Garvin agreed.
Seeing that her goal had been achieved, Garvin's mother did not force me to kneel and apologize anymore, but asked me to bow and pay respects in front of Maria's tombstone.
Due to the long delay, my cousin called me urgently.
"Ophelia, where are you? The ceremony is about to start. The MC is urging us."
Garvin gave me a glance and I pretended to be relaxed, saying, "We'll be there soon."
At the wedding venue.
I found an opportunity to say a few words to my cousin in private and then gave him some addresses and phone numbers.
"Garvin, you son of a bitch, if you dare to bully me, I will make you lose face in front of everyone. Aren't you deeply in love with your late wife? Let everyone see your deep love today.”
Garvin and I met on a blind date. As we all know, on the blind date, the probability of being able to meet a normal man in the system, with a height of 180 centimeters and a decent appearance, was extremely high.
Besides, Garvin also had a postgraduate degree from a well-known university and I was instantly enchanted.
Although his hometown was in the countryside, his mother was unemployed and he did not have a house in the city, I did not care. After all, my financial situation was much better than his, so we could just complement each other.
Only after we confirmed our relationship did he tell me that he had a son.
"But my son is very young. You will be his mother after we get married and he will not remember his biological mother." He comforted me.
I believed his words and then under his indirect hint, I bought him a car and then let him and his mother move into my vacant house.
I did not expect him to make such a fuss for me on the wedding day.
The wedding march began to play slowly.
The ceremony began soon. I changed into my wedding dress and walked slowly into the hall arm in arm with Garvin, who was wearing a suit.
Regina and her female relatives in the audience all looked at me with a mocking expression.
I resisted the nausea and the urge to take action as I interacted with Garvin on stage and listened to the MC give some clichéd wedding speeches.
Just as the ceremony was about to come to an end, my cousin finally showed up.
He was pulling a small cart covered with a red cloth.
My cousin came up on stage, snatched the MC's microphone, patted it for three times and said, "Hello! Hello! Hello everyone, I am the bride's brother Dario Spencer. Today is Ophelia and Garvin’s wedding day. So, I have a gift specifically for Garvin, my brother-in-law."
Garvin looked confused and lowered his voice to me. "What the hell is going on?"
Dario pulled the cart onto the stage and lifted the red cloth. “Dang dang dang dang~”
The people around were shocked to see it.
"No way, is this brother sick? Who would give this as a gift for a wedding?"
"Oh my God, what the hell!"
In the middle of the stage, there was a sturdy tombstone.
"What the hell! What do you mean by giving this to me?" Garvin's expression changed.
"Today is my sister's wedding day and Garvin unexpectedly dragged her to bow to his late wife!"
Dario's voice was excited and booming, carrying throughout the hall.
The invited guests were in an uproar. "How is this possible? How can anyone do something like this?"
"That's right. Garvin is a scholar. Scholars value friendship and loyalty the most. I think he still can't forget his late wife, so I moved his late wife's tombstone here. Instead of forcing him to marry my sister, it's better to let him live with this tombstone for the rest of his life!"
"What nonsense are you talking about? Get your ass down here!"
Regina wanted to rush onto the stage, but was stopped by the people my cousin brought.
Although my cousin was not very wealthy, he ran a carving factory with hundreds of workers. When he told everyone about my situation, more than a dozen men immediately rushed over.
One of the invited guests stood up and said, "This man's behavior is too impolite. There's no reason for the bride to bow to his late wife. Isn't this just a show of power?"
"Yeah, what era is this? You're still thinking about having a wife and mistresses. Don't you even consider whether you have the confidence to do so?"
“That's right! The house his family lives in is all Ophelia's, yet he dares to do such a despicable thing!"
Dario continued to indignantly accuse Garvin's family of various despicable practices and the people listened with great interest.
After all, compared to an ordinary wedding, a dramatic wedding like this was out of reach.
Garvin's face filled with anger. He clenched his fists and gritted his teeth as he said to me, "If you dare to do this, aren't you afraid that your brother will lose his qualification for the college entrance exam?"
I burst out laughing when I heard that and coincidentally, my younger brother also arrived at that time.
I pointed at my younger brother and said, "He? The college entrance exam? Do your homework before threatening others."
Counterattack.
Chapter 3
"What do you mean!" Garvin's voice trembled slightly.
"Don't you know there are two students named Oliver in Elysian Academy? Little Oliver is at the top of the class and he is indeed a good candidate for Decelis University. And my brother, Big Oliver, has been ranked last in grades since elementary school. You're threatening me by making him unable to take the college entrance exam. It's so funny."
"You ...." Garvin was so angry that he almost could not catch his breath.
He wanted to step down, but was blocked back by two strong men.
"You are really despicable," he said to me viciously.
I winked at Dario, signaling that he could move on to the next step.
"Dear relatives and friends, we, the Spencer Family are not petty people. Since my sister bowed to his late wife, it's not too much to ask Garvin to greet and bow to my sister's ex-boyfriends, isn't it?"
Just as Dario spoke, Oliver came onto the stage with a group of people.
I counted and there were 6 in total.
They all came, that was really kind of them.
My ex and I basically broke up peacefully without any conflicts. Plus, I was very generous, so if anyone came to me for help when they had difficulties, I was not hesitant to help them.
I did not expect the good relationships I accumulated before to be of great use at this moment.
"Garvin, everyone is here," Oliver said as he pointed to my exes.
"Why are you standing still? Greet and bow to your elder brothers. You have six elder brothers here."
The people attending the wedding had never seen such a dramatic scene before. They all left their seats and gathered towards the middle of the stage.
"What do you want to do! I'm going to call the police!" Regina shouted from another side.
"Call the police? Why didn't you think of calling the police when you forced my sister to kneel down? Besides, we didn't hit him or scold him, so it would be useless even if the police came!" Dario shouted.
There were always a few relatives and friends in the venue who did not get along with the Agler Family.
"You force Ophelia to bow to his late wife and they ask Garvin to greet and bow to her ex-boyfriends. Isn't this fair and just? What's wrong with that?" A relative shouted.
"That's right, it's fair and just." Several relatives who watched the commotion agreed.
"I think, you deserve it! Nowadays, who doesn't respect each other? Only your Agler Family thinks you are the ruler? Don't you even look at how much money you have in your pocket?"
I looked at Garvin, who looked like he wanted to devour people.
"Yes, they are your elder brothers, just greet and bow to them."
"You really are a lunatic!"
I grabbed Garvin's little finger and forcefully bent it upwards, causing him excruciating pain.
"Garvin, you know I'm a sports student, right? My favorites are Taekwondo and Muay Thai. We've already got married, so if you get hurt or have a broken bone, it won't be considered intentional injury, but it will be considered domestic violence. In other words, beating you up will be in vain, so you better think it carefully."
Garvin screamed in pain.
I repeated. "They are your elder brothers, greet and bow to them one by one."
Garvin had no choice but to stretch out his hand, greet and introduce himself with his head bowed to my first ex-boyfriend.
"Speak up! I can't hear you, call me Jonathan."
"It's nice to see you, Jonathan." Garvin murmured.
"Good!" The invited guest below cheered.
"Then, this is Dieter."
Garvin had no choice but to stretch out his hand, greet and introduce himself with his head bowed to my second ex-boyfriend.
"It's nice to see you, Dieter." Garvin murmured.
"Good, louder!" The invited guests below still enjoyed the fun.
Until finally, he greeted and bowed to all my six ex-boyfriends.
"Thank you, everyone. I'll treat you all to dinner another day." I thanked all my exes. They had never seen such a scene before, so they left the stage laughing.
Also, what was more satisfying, Dario completely took over the role of MC, holding up the microphone and saying, "We would like to apologize to our guests for having to see this kind of joke on what should be a sacred day.
Sorry for making everyone laugh today. To express our apology, everyone can bring back today's gift and today's banquet is our treat for everyone!”
"Is there such a good thing?" All the relatives and friends below were overjoyed.
After all, our family did not care about these gifts, but for the stingy Garvin's family, it was a huge sum of money.
Regina quickly stood in the middle of the stage, waving her hand and shouting. "No, no, you can't take the gift back, you can't take it back."
Unfortunately, it was beyond her control. The person in charge of collecting the gifts was my relative and he returned them all generously.
On this wedding day, not only lost face but the Agler Family also lost money.
Garvin and his mother looked at me with hatred and anger.
After the guests left, I changed into casual clothes and said to Garvin, "Tomorrow at 8 o'clock, I will go to the city hall to get a divorce. I was so blind to get a marriage certificate with you."
With my cousin's by my side, Garvin dare not go too far, but I could not underestimate his despicable level either.
"Divorce is not that easy! If you want a divorce, I'll skin you alive!"
