Chapter 3
It wasn't until the funeral the next day that I saw Matthew and Jennie again.
Jennie was wearing a red dress, smiling and talking with a child beside her and Matthew. No matter how you looked at it,they were like a happy family of three.
I looked at the red dress Jennie was wearing and pinched my palm until it bled.
At my son’s funeral, everyone was dressed in black,so solemn. But not only was Jennie wearing a red dress, even the child she had with Matthew was dressed in red.
If my mother-in-law,Kelly,didn’t care, that was one thing, but even Matthew didn’t care.
In his heart, there was no place for me or my son.Thinking of this,a sense of bitterness welled up in my heart, feeling sorry for my son.
I rushed forward, intending to drive them all out of my son’s funeral. But before I could approach,Jennie noticed my presence.
She curled her lips and said meaningfully,“Mother-in-law,I also want to move into the old house to live with you,but isn’t Sonya still living there now?”
“My brother in-law and Sonya’s son just died.My husband and I are so happy as a family of three, but I’m afraid it might offend her.Just yesterday,I almost didn’t get to see you.”
As she spoke,Jennie wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
Kelly’s expression toward me suddenly turned angry and disgusted.
“You can move in.If that unlucky star has any objections,I'll kick her out!If it weren't for that unlucky star,my son wouldn't have died.As for the bastard she gave birth to,it's good that he's dead.Otherwise,he'd be competing with your little son for the family fortune. It's disgusting!”
She continued,“You and your son are so much more considerate than this unlucky star. You came to visit me and you even brought me this precious jade statue. That unlucky star and the beast she gave birth to can't compare to you two at all.”
She laughed happily.
I didn't feel anything unusual about her attitude.
When I first married Matthew, she looked down on me in every way.And because I didn't have a child in the first few years of our marriage, she secretly thought I was an infertile hen.
But even after I gave birth to a son,she didn't treat him any differently.Perhaps because she disliked me as a mother, she also came to despise her own grandson.
I recalled how my son timidly pulled on my sleeve and asked me,“Mom,does Grandma not like me?”
My heart felt as though it had been torn apart.
In the past, when Matthew was around,my mother-in-law wasn't this extreme, after all,Matthew would defend me.But now,Matthew's eyes and heart are filled with Jennie and that child.
My son and I had long been forgotten by him.
Thinking of this,I shouted angrily,“Get out!I won’t allow you to attend my son’s funeral!”
As soon as I finished speaking,Kelly suddenly stepped forward and slapped me across the face.
She glared at me with anger in her eyes,“Do you think you’re the only one who lost a son?You beast! You bring my family a lot of misfortune!Give us back our Matthew’s life! Why wasn’t it you who died instead!”
Before I could react,I saw the jade statue on her body.
“How did you get my mother's heirloom?”
I stared in disbelief.
That jade statue was my mother's heirloom.
When my son was three years old,I had already given it to him.I hoped it would protect him.
It should have gone with my son to the underworld. How could it be here? How could it be here?
I couldn't help but reach out toward Kelly.
Chapter 4
The next moment,Matthew suddenly slapped my hand away.
Kelly finally reacted and glared at me angrily.
“You ungrateful, how dare you lay a hand on me!I think you've really gone mad! This is clearly the jade statue that Jennie gave me.How could it possibly belong to some bastard?I think you really need a good lesson so you can understand what it means to respect your elders and love the young!”
The old woman said, her face twisted in anger and she waved her hand behind her.
Suddenly,a group of bodyguards surrounded me.
I didn't even look at them.I just stared intently at the jade statue on Matthew and Kelly,my voice hoarse as I spoke,“This is my mother's heirloom.I gave it to my son!Matthew, after all these years, can't you see that?”
I couldn't help but shout.
Matthew’s expression paused for a moment. He furrowed his brows tightly and looked at the jade statue around her mother’s neck.
At that moment,Jennie hurriedly pulled the child to my side.
She smiled and said,“I think Sonya might be so heartbroken that she’s lost her mind. This jade statue was clearly a gift I gave to my mother in-law.Now that Matthew is dead,Sonya must be so grief-stricken that her mind has snapped.”
“However,Peter and I are also at fault for wearing red. It's because we didn't have enough time at the hospital,so we had no choice.Sonya, please snap out of it.After all, you've lost your son and husband. Now you're the only one who can preside over this funeral.”
After she finished speaking, she looked at me defiantly.
Peter, who was wearing red, also spoke arrogantly,"My mother wouldn't want the belongings of your short-lived child. This is something I picked out from my own gifts to give to Grandma."
“My father gives me a thousand gifts every year and even this jade statue was given to me by him a few days ago.My mother wouldn't do such a thing!”
As he spoke,he looked at me arrogantly, then took Matthew's hand.
Facing Peter and Jennie's humiliation of me,Matthew didn't care at all.He affectionately stroked Peter's head, then looked at me with a cold expression.
“I think you're really crazy. How dare you think this jade statue is your son's?I'm not Matthew. You've made a mistake. How dare you lay a hand on your own mother-in-law?I think you really need a lesson.”
After speaking,he turned to the bodyguard and coldly ordered,“Give her a good beating.Make her kneel before that bastard's grave and apologize to Jennie and my mother.”
I stared at him in disbelief, filled with hatred,“I won't apologize! You can clearly see that this is my son's jade statue.Matthew, you're a beast!”
As soon as the words left my mouth,Matthew's face darkened instantly.
He glared at me and said,“I'm not Matthew,Sonya. You've truly lost your mind.I'll make you apologize to Jennie and my mother properly.”
After speaking,Matthew waved his hand behind him.
I didn’t know what he said to his assistant, but a few minutes later, the assistant came over with a shovel.
Matthew looked at me,sneered, then placed the shovel beside his son's grave, looking down at me and said,
“Kneel and apologize,or let me dig up your son's grave and make him rest in peace. You choose.”
Chapter 5
I stared in disbelief, unable to believe that Matthew could do such a cruel thing. This was clearly his son too!
“You can’t do this!”I screamed.
I rushed forward, trying to grab the shovel from his hands. But before I could, the bodyguards behind me blocked me.I could only watch helplessly as Matthew mercilessly dug into the grave with the shovel.
“No!You can’t do this!”I started being hysteric but my words did nothing to stop Matthew.
Seeing that I still refused to apologize, his expression grew even colder and he swung the shovel again without hesitation.Watching my son’s grave being destroyed,I finally couldn’t hold back my pain any longer.
“Stop!Stop!I apologize,I apologize!”
The bodyguards behind me relaxed their grip and I rushed forward, beginning to shovel the soil Matthew had dug up back into its original place.
Matthew simply looked down at me from above and said,“Don’t forget to kneel.”
My body stiffened, but upon seeing the shovel in his hand,I knelt down.Under the scorching sun,I was exposed to the sunlight and soon began to sweat profusely.
After I knelt down,Matthew still didn't let me off the hook.
He coldly looked at me,“Sonya, although I sympathize with you for losing your husband and child, that's not a reason to offend my wife and mother. You will kneel here for three hours,or else I won't let you off the hook.”
After speaking,Matthew carefully took Jennie’s hand and led them to a shaded area.
I didn’t even glance at them, focusing instead on returning my son’s tombstone to its original position.
Apparently feeling that this wasn’t enough to provoke me,Matthew made a phone call.Soon,a dozen red sports cars pulled up outside the funeral, turning the solemn atmosphere into a joke.
Jennie gave me a smug look and then shouted loudly,“Marcus, you’re too good to us.But we’re still at Sonya’s son’s funeral.Isn’t this a bit inappropriate?”
Matthew affectionately rubbed her nose,“When it comes to being good to you,I never need to consider the occasion.”
After saying that,a group of people got out of the red sports cars. Each of them was holding a gift box.Inside were all kinds of expensive luxury items. It seemed like this was no longer my son's funeral, but rather their luxury item show-off party.
I pinched my palm until it bled, wishing I could drive them out immediately.
Jennie exclaimed in surprise and hugged Matthew beside her,“Matthew, how did you know I’ve been liking this brand of handbags lately? And this set of jewelry—I think it costs a hundred million. You’re really too good to me.”
As Jennie spoke, she glanced at me smugly.Meanwhile I knelt there,my heart as dead as ashes.
Matthew seemed to glance at me from afar.Seeing that I didn't react,a strange feeling arose in his heart. But soon, with Jennie and the child's whining,he completely pushed that strange feeling to the back of his mind.
Watching their sweet appearance,I couldn't take it anymore. My vision went black and I fainted.
Matthew looked at the figure lying not far away and his heart suddenly stirred. He couldn't help but take two steps forward, wanting to help me up.
At that moment, his eyes fell on a necklace slipping off my body. The floral design on it was so familiar—the person who had saved him back then had also worn one.He couldn’t help but pick it up.
“Matthew, how did this necklace end up on Sonya’s body?I clearly remember putting it in the jewelry box at home.”
As she spoke, she shifted her gaze to me,“Could it be that Sonya stole my necklace?But...”
