Chapter 3
I gently stroked the ultrasound image when my phone buzzed with an incoming video message.
The video lasted half an hour. Jenna in the video was extremely crazy. I had never seen that woman so out of control.
In our six years together, Jenna had always been gentle. Even in bed, she was shy and reserved.
So, she wasn't naturally self-restrained. It was just that the person who could ignite her passion was never me.
I watched the video as if punishing myself, wanting to see the Jenna I had never known.
I didn't know how long I had watched before a nurse came to my side.
"Sir, are you alright? Is something wrong?"
Only then did I realize that as the video played, I cried harder and harder.
It wasn't until the nurse spoke that I noticed I was trembling all over, even the hand holding my phone was shaking uncontrollably.
I shamefully discovered that even now, I still loved Jenna.
She wasn't some object to be thrown away when broken, nor was she just an ordinary friend to cut ties with when upset.
She was a living, breathing person, the woman I've loved for six whole years. Loving her had long since become my second nature, ingrained in my very bones.
Everyone said Jenna loved me for six years with all her heart, but hadn't I treated her the same way? After six whole years of knowing and being with each other, only at this moment did I realize I couldn't bear to lose her; I honestly couldn't.
I thought back to the sound of the baby's heartbeat I'd heard during the check-up earlier. I wiped my face hard and took a deep breath. I wanted to give her and this child one last chance.
I dialed her number.
"Can you come back? I want to talk to you."
Jenna's voice was indescribably hoarse, as if he was holding back something.
"Sebastian, I still have some things to take care of here. Let the driver take you home first, we can talk when you return."
"Mmmph ..."
A muffled groan cut through, then the call ended abruptly, leaving only the mechanical beeping.
We were both adults. I knew precisely what Jenna was doing on the other end of that call.
After a long daze, I looked up at the nurse waiting beside me.
"It's nothing, I'll leave now."
It was already dark when I got home from the hospital. As soon as I entered the house, Jenna came to greet me.
"Where did you go by yourself? Why didn't you let the driver go with you?"
Halfway through her sentence, Jenna noticed my red and swollen eyes.
"What's wrong, Sebastian? Why are your eyes so swollen? Have you been crying? Is it because accompanying me for the prenatal check-up today reminded you of Jenna again? It's okay, the baby in my belly is her niece, so it's a kind of remembrance."
"Oh, right. Didn't you say you had something to tell me?"
I carefully studied Jenna's features. She was so beautiful, as beautiful as before, her eyes filled with my reflection.
Precisely the same as in the video Allen had sent me this afternoon.
I lowered my eyes, avoiding her gaze.
"It's nothing. I just wanted to ask if there was anything you wanted me to bring back. I went shopping this afternoon."
Jenna's shoulders visibly relaxed, as if she had breathed a sigh of relief.
"Then you should go and rest quickly. You must be tired after a long day."
I nodded and went straight back to my room without replying to Jenna.
I looked to be truly exhausted. My head had barely touched the pillow before I fell asleep. In a daze, I seemed to see eighteen-year-old Jenna again.
The young girl stood before me, her cheeks flushed with shyness as she confessed her feelings.
"Sebastian Clark, I like you very much. Would you be my boyfriend?"
Chapter 4
"Don't worry, I will definitely treat you well."
I didn't know if it was the intoxicating sunset that day or the sincerity in that woman's eyes that was so moving.
That day, against my better judgment, I nodded.
When I woke up again, it was already broad daylight. Since hearing the news of Jenna's death, I had hardly slept so soundly.
I was still sitting on the bed in a daze when the bedroom door was pushed open and Allen walked in from the doorway.
He looked at me with a smug expression.
"Do you know why I sent you that video yesterday? Did you really think she was Jenna's older sister and I was your so-called brother-in-law?"
I didn't answer him, but I mocked my own foolishness in my heart.
When I first heard the news of Jenna's accident, I was so shocked that I fainted.
When I woke up again, my mother-in-law told me the body had already been cremated. They even used the excuse of not wanting to upset me further to prevent me from attending Jenna's funeral.
Every detail hinted that Jenna's death was suspicious.
But Jenna and I were a publicly recognized model couple during those six years. She had always been extremely good to me and I couldn't have imagined that she would lie to me about something like this, just to escape marriage.
That was until a so-called older sister who worked in foreign suddenly appeared, bringing back an foreign husband.
Although I was often in a daze, I never considered the possibility that Jenna had faked her death.
It wasn't until I overheard the conversation between Jenna and my mother-in-law that I realized the enormous lie they had woven in front of me.
Seeing that I didn't react, a knowing smile appeared on Allen's face.
"Men understand men better. Yesterday, when we were going out for the prenatal check-up, I already sensed something was off with you. Sure enough, you already know the truth."
"You must be very curious as to why Jenna would cheat on you, even going so far as to fake her death to be with me. Hahaha, do you know what she said about you behind your back?"
"She said you're dull, that after being together for so long, even intimacy feels like a chore. But it was different with me. I could always easily bring her to ecstasy. Do you know? She called me her most handsome knight and said foreign men are more charming."
My heart suddenly pounded faster and a ball of fire seemed to explode in my chest.
I couldn't hold back any longer and threw a fierce punch at Allen.
Allen covered his face and was about to burst into curses when Jenna's startled cry erupted.
"Sebastian Clark! What are you doing!"
Hearing this voice, the smugness on Allen's face instantly turned into grievance.
"Sebastian, I just saw that you haven't been in a good mood lately and wanted to comfort you. How could you hit someone? I know you're upset because of Jenna's death, but you can't just lose your temper like this."
Jenna stared intently at Allen's cheek, then turned her head and roared at me.
"Sebastian, he's your brother-in-law!"
I didn't respond to Jenna but instead raised my head and looked directly into her eyes.
"I'm asking you, is he really my brother-in-law?"
Jenna was stunned, seemingly frightened by my gaze.
Allen then grabbed Jenna's hand.
"Jenna, why don't you return to the room and rest with me for a while? I'm feeling a bit unwell."
Jenna seemed to want to say something more, her lips trembling slightly, but in the end, she just helped Allen away without another word.
I lowered my gaze and stood there, lost in thought, until my sister's message buzzed on my phone.
[The jet has arrived.]
I took a deep breath, got up and placed the suicide note I'd prepared earlier into the bedside drawer.
I wanted Jenna to personally find this suicide note after she learned of my death.
I wanted her to open her eyes wide and see clearly that my love for her was enough to follow her into death.
I wanted her to live day and night consumed by guilt. I wanted her to feel like she's better off dead.
After doing all this, I didn't pack anything. I just grabbed my ID and bank card before walking out the door, only to bump straight into Jenna emerging from Allen's room.
A hint of hesitation crossed her face when she saw me, but she still spoke softly.
"I'm sorry, Sebastian. I was a bit emotional just now. I didn't mean to yell at you, but you shouldn't have spoken to your brother-in-law like that either."
I couldn't be bothered to listen anymore. I raised my hand and cut her off directly.
"I think I'll go out for a walk. My sister-in-law should stay home and keep her brother-in-law company."
I deliberately emphasized the titles "eldest sister-in-law" and "brother-in-law."
Jenna didn't seem to notice the odd tone in my voice. Instead, she seemed relieved.
"Going out for a walk is good. Get some fresh air. It'll lift your spirits. Come back early and I'll have the housekeeper make some of your favorite dishes."
I nodded, but the moment I brushed past Jenna, my eyes turned sharp.
Jenna, I'll give you a taste of your own medicine.
You like faking death so much? Well, then, accept this big gift I've prepared for you.
