Chapter 4
Because of the brutality of the case, the superiors attached great importance to it. During these days, almost everyone in the police force stayed in the police station.
When it was dark, Yuki called Dad. She sounded aggrieved. "Dad, why haven't you come back yet?"
Dad took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. Then, he spoke softly, "Yuki, I have been busy with a major case these days, and I may have to stay in the police station for a few days. I just ordered takeout for you. Please bear with it for a few days. After I finishes the case, I will take you to enjoy your favorite seafood buffet."
Standing beside Dad, I saw him treat Yuki with tenderness, which he never showed me, and I felt brokenhearted.
Sometimes, I felt strange. I was the younger sister, and Yuki was already 30 years old. But for Dad, Yuki was the one who would never grow up. Although I was seven years younger than Yuki, I was always taught to give in to Yuki.
Dad considered this as humility.
So, my clothes and food were Yuki's leftovers. Even on my birthday, I only could eat the leftover cake.
After hearing Dad's words, Yuki still felt aggrieved, but she was obedient. "Okay. Dad, take care of your health."
For Yuki's concern, Dad felt relaxed and smiled happily.
After hanging up the phone, Mr. Smith teased, "Mr. Jones, you're lucky. Both of your daughters are filial."
Dad replied, "Thanks."
"By the way, why hasn't Winnie brought you dinner today?"
When hearing my name, Dad was stunned for a moment.
Chapter 5
I thought Dad must have been too busy. Otherwise, how could he think there was anything wrong when I didn't contact him all day?
In the past, every time Dad didn't come home due to work, I called him. If I knew that he would stay at the police station all night, I would prepare food and bring it to the police station, just in case Dad forgot to have a meal for work.
"Why don't you call her? Otherwise, I'm afraid Winnie will send you food later." Mr. Smith took out his phone and took a look. "It's already ten o'clock. Don't let her come here."
Dad picked up the phone, and I was excited. "Is Dad going to call me? Does he finally remember me?"
But Dad just took a look at the phone. "No. She called me last night and I scolded her. She may be angry today. She has a very bad temper."
"Uh, you scolded her last night?"
Dad seemed to recall what happened last night, and then he said angrily, "Yes. I was celebrating Yuki's birthday last night, but she kept calling me. She was ignorant!"
After a sigh, Mr. Smith stood up and patted Dad on the shoulder. "It's been so long. You should stop hating Winnie. After all, Winnie can't be blamed for your wife's death."
However, Dad sneered.
"Why can't I blame her? Tina and I had taken contraceptive measures, but Tina was pregnant. It would be fine if Winnie were a boy. I don't blame Winnie for being a girl, but Tina died for Winnie! So, I really wish Winnie had never been born! If my mom hadn't persuaded me, I would have strangled her to death!"
"But, Dad, I'm dead. So, are you happy?"
Chapter 6
I only remembered Mom's photos.
There were many Mom's photos at home. Photos had been shot from when Mom was in college to when she got married and had children.
Mom was beautiful, with big bright eyes, fair skin, and long hair. When she smiled, she had two cute dimples.
Mom really loved taking photos. After Yuki was born, they took many photos together every year.
I didn't meet Mom. Let alone taking a photo with her.
In my memory, Dad always said that I was a jinx who killed Mom when I was born and that Mom died for me.
I felt guilty and annoyed, and I hated myself.
Every time Dad said this, I wished I had never been born. Maybe if Mom hadn't given birth to me, she wouldn't have died. I even had depression for a while.
I had attempted suicide. In my bedroom, I used a fruit knife to deeply cut the artery in my wrist and let the blood flow out like water.
But I didn't die in the end and woke up in a hospital.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Dad's ferocious expression. "If you want to die, please get out. If you die in the house, no one will dare to live there."
I thought Dad would be heartbroken, but I didn't expect that he would hate me even more.
Later, I became afraid and didn't dare to commit suicide again.
Firstly, suicide was so painful, and I always remembered that pain. So, I dared not try it again. Secondly, I thought if I was more filial, I could get Dad's love, even if it was only a little bit.
Hence, after I was admitted to a university, I took the initiative to ask for no tuition and living expenses. I applied for a student loan and studied hard to get a scholarship. I even took on various part-time jobs after class.
During my four years in college, not only did I never ask my family for a penny, but when Yuki asked me to borrow money, I generously gave her most of my savings.
