Chapter 1
I rarely went to class reunions, but I unexpectedly ran into him, who was making a name for himself abroad. Domestic companies were competing for the opportunity to cooperate with him, and his gentle girlfriend Jennifer was sitting next to him.
Jennifer said, “If you hadn't taken that small amount of money, you would be the lady of the Bond Group now. Ruby, you really lost something big for a small gain.”
Felix Bond embraced his girlfriend and smiled, “Why bring up the past? I am with you now.”
Other classmates had complex expressions, but they all spoke up to protect me, the youngest sister in the class at that time.
“That's enough. It’s all in the past.”
“Exactly, that’s the college romance. Who knows what will happen in the future?”
I smiled at my college classmates who were eager to defend me and said to Felix while staring at him, “Mr. Bond should know better than me that money is the most important thing in the world. Which of those who come to flatter you are not in it for the money? Selling our relationship for 200 thousand was well worth it! What do you think?”
He glared at me deeply.
Seeing that I didn't care much, the old classmates also relaxed and started gossiping boldly.
“Ruby Horton, why didn't you ask for more back then? Mr. Bond is worth a lot."
Ruby Horton was me. Felix and his girlfriend looked embarrassed, but they had to suppress their anger in front of so many old classmates.
Sitting opposite me, Felix said with a very cold look, “Yeah, Do you regret selling me for 200 thousand?”
I raised the corners of my mouth and replied, "200 thousand is already a lot for a poor person like me! My biggest advantage is contentment. As for how much you are worth, it's not up to me. In your mother's eyes, you are only worth 200 thousand.”
Felix's girlfriend couldn't help but slap the table and stood up, saying, “You are the one who is materialistic and money-minded. Why do you have to push the blame on Aunt Bond? Why don’t you admit that you are a money digger? Are you trying to attract Felix’s attention? Do you want more?”
Tom Keeley, who used to be our monitor, looked at Felix and said, “Felix, we all know what kind of person Ruby is. There's no right or wrong in relationships. Ask your girlfriend to pay attention to her words.”
Felix raised an eyebrow and said, “Isn't what she said right? You guys only protect Ruby. I want to see how long you can protect her!”
After saying that, Felix took his girlfriend leave.
The rest looked at me in silence. I shook the wine in my glass, drank it all, and smiled with bright red lips, but there was no trace of laughter in my eyes.
“Did you really get the money?”
"Yes."
“You must be kidding.”
"I got it and then donated it in the name of his mother."
"I knew it! Why didn't you say it? I feel so frustrated for you! Look at the face of that woman just now. She's so proud!"
"I did take the money and we did break up. There is no need to say anything more."
"Ruby, did Felix’s mom make it difficult for you?"
I looked at my old friends who had been supporting me from beginning to end and shook my head with a smile. The tears in my eyes slipped out as I smiled, falling into the wine glass.
Some people chose to believe you without hesitation, while others always stabbed the knife into the softest part of you. Maybe we just weren't meant to be.
Chapter 2
I wiped away my tears, raised my glass, and said boldly, "I’ll treat you another round!"
Let all the past be buried in this dark night.
The four-year romance in college had come to an unsatisfactory end. Did I regret it? No, because at least I once owned it.
"Do you still have feelings for him?"
After returning home, my best friend Wendy Kirk was sitting across from me and questioning me.
I was drinking honey water, but my heart was bitter. I said lightly, "To be honest, no!"
"Then why haven't you been in a relationship and have rejected everyone for so many years? You don't drink alcohol. Why are you drinking so much today? Are you feeling upset?" Wendy didn't believe me and insisted on questioning me.
"Wendy, he has a long way to go."
I didn't work hard all these years to be reunited with him. However, when I saw the anger and hatred in his eyes, I couldn't help but feel sad. Many times in life there was only one choice.
Lying on the bed, my thoughts drifted back to that year. On the day of our breakup, he cried and begged me to tell him the reason. He asked me why I came to him with such a determined decision.
"Is it because of going abroad? Didn't we agree to go together?"
"I'm not going abroad anymore."
"No? Then I'm not going abroad either."
"Even if you don’t go abroad, we're not getting back together."
"Why? Why?" Felix was eager for answers. He knew that once I made a decision, I would never change it.
"Forget it, okay?" After saying that, I turned around and left, tears welled up uncontrollably.
How could I drag you into my miserable life?
It was only right that he hated me. I was the one who took the money and left him.
He understood me, took care of me and considered everything for me. He knew what I wanted with just a glance.
But that day, he was anxious. My eyes were so deep and heartless that he couldn't understand anymore.
In the days after the breakup, I received a call from his friend, "Felix jumped out of the car on the way to the airport today. He's in the hospital. Come and see him!"
I tightened my grip on the phone but forced myself to say calmly, "Since you're all there, I won't come."
Just after I answered the phone, I sat paralysed on the floor. I knew that he was gambling with his life. He was unwilling to leave and wanted to come back to me.
"Ruby, Felix is just having fun with you. Many college couples don't have a future." Felix's mother put down her coffee cup and looked at me.
The first time I met Felix's mother, my hands were nervously clasped under the table, but I still firmly said to her, "Auntie, although we are young, we cherish each other. I know his feelings for me very well in my heart!"
Felix's mother froze for a moment, then looked at me and said, "Ruby, I'm not here to part you. Felix is planning to go abroad after he graduates from university. What about you?"
I quickly responded, "Auntie, I have already received a scholarship from a foreign university. We can..."
Before I could finish my words, Felix's mother raised her hand to stop me, and said with a cold snort, "It seems you still don't know that your father was diagnosed with liver cancer and is lying in the hospital now."
I stood up suddenly, shaking my head in disbelief. "How is that possible? It can't be true." Tears welled up in my eyes, and I felt a stabbing pain in my heart as if I had been stabbed with needles.
