Chapter 1
Before the wedding, Maximilian Reitman was on duty at the hospital when he encountered a medical disturbance.
He didn't die but forgot about me. Maximilian only remembered that Jocelyn Reverie was the one he loved.
His coworkers and colleagues said he was suffering from intermittent memory loss. He would soon recover as long as he remembered more of what happened when he was in love. They also had to recall the things when they had relations with Maximilian.
It happened that the kitten I adopted with Maximilian, Rosie, gave birth to three kittens. These were our sweet memories. I believed it would be able to recall his deep love for me.
I went to him with the filmed video with enthusiasm. But when I came to his room, I only overheard a conversation between Maximilian and his parents.
“My son, you are the one who has this idea. I know you pretended to get amnesia to fulfil Jocelyn's wish. How about you accompany Jocelyn for one last year? She also has cancer. So pitiful!”
“No way, Dad. It’s impossible. I only love Pauline. I will only let her down this time in my life, Dad. When I finish compensating for Jocelyn's feelings, I will be back to being that good husband only for Pauline.”
Maximilian’s mother said, “So sadly, Jocelyn has been chasing you for half your life, my son. Where is she not better than her? Why do you only see Pauline Moonstone all the time?”
Maximilian retorted with a cold face to his mother, “Pauline is ten thousand times better than Jocelyn. I remind you two to treat Pauline as your only daughter-in-law!”
He then took a breath for a while. “It was agreed that I would only pretend to be lovers with Jocelyn for a month. I hope this matter must not delay my wedding to Pauline, okay?”
I trembled as I withdrew my application to stay in school. I then resolutely decided to go abroad for further study.
——
When I sorted out my expression and entered the hospital room, there was only Maximilian Reitman.
As soon as he saw me, he scolded me in annoyance. “I already said I don't remember you, right? Can you stop bothering me and leave me alone now? I was a childhood friend of Jocelyn. How could I possibly like you?”
Looking at the man who was guarding me like a flood and a beast, my heart aches for a while. I couldn't figure out how the gentle and considerate man who cried and begged me to marry him would pretend to have amnesia and lie to me.
I then replied, “I just wanted to tell you that our cat, Rosie, had three kittens. One is white…”
Before I could finish, he interrupted impatiently, “I don't like cats at all. I also don't remember anything about us.”
I looked straight into his eyes. I was just trying to find a trace of guilt emotion in his gaze. But there wasn't anything at all.
“Cats are such troublesome creatures, only you girls like them. You should stop trying to jog my memory, what can be forgotten is not important.”
Maximilian's face was full of disgust as if it was too annoying to even look at me. “You hurry up and leave me. My girlfriend will be here soon.”
I was just about to leave when the door was pushed open.
“Sorry, Pauline. Maximilian doesn't even remember you now. It's not too good to still live in Maximilian's house, right?”
Without waiting for me to speak, Maximilian hurriedly spoke, “Enough, Jocelyn. If she wants to live there, let her live. You have to help me pack up my things now. Please, don't gas yourself!”
Maximilian said it with a few hints of warning. Even though my heart was almost dying from the pain, I still managed to force a smile on him.
“I'll move out, Maximilian. Don’t worry.”
I took a taxi back to the villa. When I opened the door and looked at a piece of festive red. My heart was slightly sour.
The cell phone ding-donged a few times. It was a message from Jocelyn Reverie.
Jocelyn: [Maximilian wants you to move out in a hurry, Pauline. We will especially come to help you pack.]
I was just about to refuse for a while. But the door opened the next moment.
Jocelyn smiled condescendingly. “You have to move it all out before nightfall, Pauline, or else throw it all out!”
I looked at Maximilian. I felt somewhat incredulous at that moment. But he didn't even look at me at all. Maximilian just rubbed Jocelynn's head with some pampering.
“You have to take a rest, Jocelyn. I'll clean up.”
I looked at his gentle movements. It made me a little dazed. I knew that he had a cleanliness fetish. It made him not want to touch or contact outsiders casually. Even though Jocelynn was his childhood friend, he treated her like a stranger in front of me before.
Chapter 2
I held back my sour tears. I then turned around to go back to the second floor. Looking at the objects in the room where I fell in love with him. I closed my eyes for a while. But immediately afterwards, a scream came from downstairs.
“Oh, my God. There is a dead cat. Get out of here now!”
I hurriedly rushed downstairs. Then I saw a scene that made my eyes widen. Maximilian kicked at Rosie, who was rushing towards Jocelyn.
Rosie screamed miserably and flew out like a kite with broken strings. She smashed into the TV.
I screamed, “Rosie!
I almost flew over. I trembled and carefully held Rosie's head. Rosie gasped with difficulty. Her bean-sized teardrops fell out of her round eyes. She even tried to rub against the back of my hand, as if to comfort me.
“Rosie, please just bear with me. I'll take you to the hospital right away!”
I stumbled and fumbled for my cell phone, but I had forgotten it upstairs. Maximilian carefully came to my side.
“Pauline.”
“Maximilian, you're a doctor. Can you save it, please? You loved Rosie so much before. Please save it! I beg you now, Maximilian.”
Jocelyn walked up and rolled her eyes with a disdainful face. “Pauline, isn't it just a broken cat worth your crying over? Besides Maximilian doesn't remember you, why should he save an animal?”
Maximilian seemed to have just remembered that he shouldn't know me. He then immediately said, “I don't even remember you. How can I remember a cat? It's just a cat, right? Why do you care so much?”
I looked at the two indifferent people. Then I completely gave up.
Rosie just slowly died in my hand. I slowly stood up. Then I stared at the two people. On the other side, Jocelyn leaned towards Maximilian's arms with some fear.
“If it hadn't suddenly jumped on me, my brother wouldn't have kicked it, Pauline. So, blame it on itself!”
I looked at Jocelyn with a sharp gaze. “Rosie has always been well-behaved, Jocelyn. She can't hurt someone for no reason!”
The two of them took two steps back in fear from the look in my eyes. As they stepped back, the bloody kitten on the floor behind us appeared. The remaining one was also dying.
Maximilian obviously saw it as well, his face changed but still scolded me, “It's just a few cats, right? I can just give you new ones as compensation.”
I replied briefly, “That’s right, Maximilian. I just didn't hold Rosie steady. So, the kitten fell to death. I didn't do it on purpose!”
I couldn't stand it anymore. At that moment, I rushed up to him and slapped him. Then I pulled a handful of Jocelyn's hair.
“Then I didn't do it on purpose either!”
Before his hand could hit her face, Maximilian saved a hand and grabbed my wrist. “Even if you hit me, you still want to hit Jocelyn?”
Jocelyn rolled her eyes. She directly bumped into the cabinet.
“Ah, I’m in pain, Maximilian.”
Maximilian shouted, “Jocelyn!”
Maximilian looked at the blood flowing from her forehead. It made him instantly panic.
He said in anger, “Pauline Moonstone, why are you so vicious?”
With one hand, he threw me away and went forward to hug Jocelyn horizontally.
“Jocelyn, bear with me. I'll send you to the hospital right away!”
I was thrown on the coffee table. It made my face turn pale in pain. A drilling pain came from my lower abdomen.
I intuited that something was wrong with my body. Then I remembered that my period hadn't come for two months. All of a sudden, my face went white.
“Maximilian, my stomach hurts so much. Can you send me to the hospital right now?”
Maximilian's face was furious at this moment. His head didn't turn back.
“You hit your waist, Pauline. Why do you have stomach pain? Please, don't pretend in front of me. If anything happens to Jocelyn, I won't let you go, Pauline.”
Looking at the blood slowly flowing out between my legs, I became more and more terrified. “Maximilian, I'm bleeding now. I really didn't lie to you!”
Maximilian stopped instantly. He then wanted to take a look at my condition.
Chapter 3
But Jocelyn just murmured, “Maximilian, it hurts.”
Maximilian then left without looking back at me. My tears finally rolled down on my face. I just looked at the back figure getting farther away.
The festive living room was laced with Rosie's mottled blood. I thought of when I first met Rosie, she was also lying on the ground like this.
When I first started graduate studies, I was under a lot of pressure. I couldn't sleep all night. My hair also fell out by the handful.
Maximilian was worried about me. It made him often take me out for a walk.
During a heavy rainstorm, I found a dying blue cat lying in the middle of the road. I couldn't bear to see it and rescue it. Because my favourite flower was Rose, I named it Rosie.
Maximilian also loved Rosie very much. He liked to buy a lot of snacks and toys. Because he had the cleanliness fetish, he also shovelled the poop of Rosie.
Every time I stayed at home alone and felt anxious, Rosie would always be quiet. She then stayed by my side. She then rubbed my hand with her head. But now everything is ruined. I was admitted to graduate school but Rosie is gone.
Rosie’s body temperature slowly disappeared. I held on to my last ounce of strength. I then called 911 for myself.

When I got to the operating room, they actually sent me to the hospital where Maximilian worked. The one who operated on me was Dr. Benjamin Siegfried, whom I knew.
“Does Dr. Maximilian know about my condition? Do you want to ask Dr. Maximilian to come and do your cleansing surgery?”
I pursed my lips and answered, “No need. He doesn't know.”
The nurse next to me timidly spoke, “Dr. Maximilian is accompanying Nurse Edvina Vesper for her face-to-face consultation.”
The scene was awkward for a moment. I just tried to still calm down.
Dr. Benjamin said, “It's better to inform Dr. Maximilian. After all, he also has the right to know.”
I finally agreed. Then I took a breath for a while.
“Dr. Maximilian, Mrs. Pauline had a miscarriage, you have to…”
But just as Dr. Benjamin opened his mouth, he sneered, “Can a miscarriage occur just by a gentle push? How much did Pauline Moonstone pay you to put on an act? I said I don't know her well, So, please leave me alone!”
The echo of beeping and his relentless taunts echoed through the operating room. I signed myself out and closed my eyes.
***
I opened my eyes. There were several messages on my cell phone.
Maximilian: [Pauline Moonstone, if you have time to find someone to act out why don't you come apologize to Jocelyn right now? If you don't apologize, I won't marry you.]
I forced myself to endure the pain in my lower abdomen. Then I walked outside the hospital by myself.
But at the entrance, I met Maximilian's mother. She was carrying a food box in her hand as well as fruits and flowers.
I thought she was visiting me. So, I subconsciously ducked. But she walked around in front of me.
“Are you here to pester my son again, Pauline? Let me tell you, my son doesn't even remember you at all now. The only person I have in my heart as my daughter-in-law is Jocelyn Reverie. If you know what’s good for you, get out of here and disappear.”
Maximilian's mother, Milena Larkspur, has never really looked up to me. She always thought that I relied on her son to support me after I graduated without a job. I realized that I wasn't as good as Maximilian Reitman's childhood friend, Jocelyn Reverie, who knew each other well and was a good match for Maximilian.
If Maximilian hadn’t almost threatened to die, the two elders would have agreed to our marriage. Now, though he had lost his memory, it was possible for me to tell the truth.
Just in time, Maximilian Reitman came out. He was stunned when he saw me first. Meanwhile, I then looked at the wrinkles on his eyebrows.
“Pauline Moonstone, shouldn't you apologize for pushing someone?”
I answered, “I didn't push her, Maximilian. Why should I apologize? You two killed my cat and caused me to have a miscarriage. Shouldn't you be the one to apologize to me?”
Maximilian shouted to me, “Why are you so vicious, Pauline? How can an animal be compared to a human? You even lied about your miscarriage. Come on, you're still a graduate student of the University of Glasgow, now you dare not admit that you pushed someone? I really don't know how I fell in love with you before, Pauline.”
