Chapter 1
On our wedding anniversary, my husband's childhood sweetheart gave me a set of La Mer on his behalf.
I looked at the limited edition gift box worth 20 thousand dollars in my hand and went to the law firm.
That night, he entered the door with gifts.
But I took out the divorce agreement and placed it in front of him.
"Divorce? I agree."
1
As Steven opened the door, a pungent smell of alcohol rushed towards us.
I frowned and habitually opened the drawer of the coffee table to prepare to take anti-allergic medicine.
I looked at the agreement in my hand and I was stunned.
Anyway, since we were getting divorced, there didn't seem to be much difference between staying out tonight and staying out after the divorce.
Why did I take medicine to harm my own body?
When Steven changed his shoes and approached me, my arms were already red.
Steven frowned and looked dissatisfied, "Why didn't you take the medicine? Don't you know you are severely allergic to alcohol?"
So he didn't forget.
His tone at this moment was full of blame, but the tenderness from three years ago was gone.
So it was intentional for Steven to ask Lara to bring the set of La Mer to me.
I turned my head and looked at the bag he was carrying when he entered, with the logo of "La Mer" printed on it.
Steven lowered his head and searched in the drawer that had just been opened for a while, but he didn't see any trace of the medicine.
After three years, Steven still didn't remember where I put the medicine.
I raised my eyes and casually handed the agreement to him.
We were about to divorce, so there was no need to argue over these trivial matters.
"I know you're busy. I've already had the agreement drafted by a lawyer. I don't want a penny more from you, and you can't give me any less than what I deserve."
Steven sat down and rubbed his dizzy eyes. After carefully reading the agreement, he slammed it on the table.
"Janice, today is our one-year wedding anniversary. I told you I had to socialize, not that I intentionally didn't accompany you. You know how long I've been working for this cooperation."
I nodded indifferently.
"I know, didn't you already have Lara give me a gift on your behalf? I received it, so sign the agreement."
Steven opened his eyes forcefully, as if trying to see my expression clearly.
My serious expression stung him, and Steven's eyebrows tightened instantly.
"You received a gift and still want more? Are you disgusted that the gift was bought by Lara? I picked it out and bought it. I just asked her to give it to you because I was busy socializing. Don't you like skincare products?"
I did like skincare products.
Which girl didn't love beauty?
Because I am severely allergic to alcohol, I have to be extra cautious when buying skincare products.
Steven seems to have forgotten the painful price I paid for my allergies before.
That's why he could tolerate Lara do such things.
Oh no, he was testing my bottom line himself.
In the time it took to say a few words, the redness on my arm had already started to break out in a rash.
I shook my arm uncomfortably to relieve the itchiness.
I lost my patience with the explanation due to the allergies.
"Does it matter who chooses? Steven? Sign it, I don't have time to talk to you."
If we continued like this, I was afraid I would move out tonight and went straight to the hospital.
This was the first time in three years that I had given him a cold face, and my impatient tone had worn away his already limited tenderness.
At this moment, I forcefully threw the pen to the ground, and the pen instantly fell apart.
"Janice, what are you making a fuss about?"
"Before, we did not give birth to our baby. Haven't I already explained it to our parents?"
"I said, we have five years. Can't we explain to our families if we don't have children after five years?"
"Now it's only been a year, and you have to go crazy with me on our wedding anniversary?"
Suddenly, when I heard Steven mention our previous child, tears welled up in my eyes.
He still remembered that child.
But he forgot how the child died!
I took another pen and handed it to him with a cold expression.
"Enough, sign it."
Steven looked at me with a hint of anger in his gaze.
"What if I don't sign? My mom said she found an experienced doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and asked me to take you back to see the doctor in a few days to take care of your body. It's easier to get pregnant when your body is in good condition."
I laughed coldly at his words.
"Have I taken less traditional Chinese medicine in the past two years? Steven, even the child knows that we are not meant to be together and didn't want to be with us. Do you still want to force it?"
Steven completely lost his patience and shouted in a low voice, "Not meant to be together? If we weren't meant to be together, could we get married? It's not easy for us to get married, don't you know? How much have I sacrificed for this relationship?"
"Since Lara returned to the country, your temper has been getting worse every day. I come back from socializing outside and still have to see your cold expression, Janice, I am a person, I am a man!"
"I am not an animal!"
His voice grew louder with each sentence, and his final roar made me freeze in place. It seemed that the itchiness on my body disappeared, and his complaints echoed in my ears.
In this marriage, no one was victorious.
A bitter smile appeared on the corner of my lips.
I never knew how hard he felt in this marriage.
What's the point of continuing?
After Lara returned, Steven's mother arranged for Lara to work in the company and accompany him under the pretext of not trusting him to venture alone.
Every time he come back from a social event, I open the door.
What I saw was the blurred lipstick on Lara's lips and the corners of Steven's lips bitten.
From the initial trust to the current numbness.
He was a person.
But he forgot, I was also a person, and my love would also be exhausted one day.
"Whatever you think, didn't your mother like Lara very much? Get a divorce, maybe you will have a child."
"I put the agreement here, you think about it and sign it when you calm down."
After I finished speaking, I turned around and walked into the bedroom, dragging my already packed suitcase out.
At the moment I opened the door, I found Steven collapsed, holding his head and burying it in his knees.
"Janice, can you justify yourself to me?"
Chapter 2
Leaving the alcohol-filled air, my allergic symptoms quickly disappeared.
When Lara sent the limited edition branded gift box worth 20 thousand dollars, I was picking a tie for Steven in the mall.
I also had a bunch of new branded men's clothing in my hand.
They were all anniversary gifts for him.
But all the excited and anticipated feelings came to a halt when I saw that gift box.
Lara had a carefully done makeup on her face, with a hint of triumph in her eyes.
"Janice, this is the anniversary gift carefully selected by Mr. Lee for you!"
"Don't get me wrong, I just happened to have nothing to do today, so I brought it for him."
My gaze fell on the bag in her hand, and my heart sank to the bottom of the valley.
The personal secretary of the president.
But she can go shopping freely when other staffs were busy working on the project.
Lara never missed the usual early morning socializing, but on our wedding anniversary, she appeared here on behalf of Steven.
I had always known her special status for Steven, but I didn't want to investigate it further.
But this time, I knew I couldn't avoid it.
Not many people knew about my severe alcohol allergy.
Steven once said that he would keep it a secret for me.
He would protect me for a lifetime and gave me a healthy body.
At that time, it seemed that his eyes and heart belonged only to me.
When I met him, he was just the illegitimate child of the Lee family, who was bullied by everyone.
I took on multiple jobs to earn money for my seriously ill mother's surgery.
He worked hard from the bottom to get close to the Lee family.
We met in a bar, and that day, under the dim lights, the only acknowledged heir of the Lee family stepped on his head.
He poured the most expensive drink in the bar on Steven's head.
His expression was disdainful and contemptuous.
"Steven, what do you have to compete with me? I can crush you as easily as crushing an ant."
I came in with a tray and happened to see Steven's face.
In panic, I pushed away the person above his head and took him away from there.
To be honest, it was not the first time I had seen Steven being bullied.
It seemed that because of the special instructions from the heir, the people in the bar take extra care of Steven.
But that night, inexplicably, I saw his gaze was full of hatred, so I took action.
Steven was breathing heavily outside.
His ears were filled with alcohol, and it took me a long time to restore his hearing.
Our relationship underwent a tremendous change from that moment on.
When I cleaned his ears, the skin on my arms quickly turned red when the alcohol spread on it.
I didn't care and threw a pill into my mouth.
But he saw it.
Later, I told him that I had a severe allergy to alcohol, but I was in desperate need of money.
I joked with him with a light laugh.
"Now I know your secret, and you know mine. We both need to keep it a secret. If the boss finds out that I have a severe allergy, it could be fatal and I will be fired."
When I said that, Steven looked at me seriously.
Looking at the red rash on my hand, Steven spoke word by word.
"Well, I will keep your secret forever."
"I will protect you in the future..."
The sound of latter sentence was so faint that I almost thought I was hallucinating.
The next day, the heir of the Lee family died in a car accident caused by drunk driving, and the news quickly dominated the headlines.
The reputation of the Lee family plummeted.
In order to save the reputation of the Lee family, they took Steven back.
They recognized his identity of the only son of the Lee family.
That day, I received 99+ messages on my phone, and they were all from Steven.
He patiently shared everything he had never seen before, like a child.
I became his only confidant.
Steven got everything he wanted, but my life had to go on.
That night, I went to work at the bar as usual.
But as soon as I entered, the boss kicked me in the chest, and I fell heavily to the ground.
Chapter 3
"Damn it, you dare to fight with a customer and still dare to come back to work? I'm paying you a salary and still have to support you?"
"Get out!"
I fell to the ground, with multiple abrasions on my body.
I twisted and unable to get up in pain.
I didn't expect Steven to rush to me at this moment.
A black card was thrown in the face of the security guard.
"I bought this bar, so all of you get out of here!"
Steven bent down and picked me up, as if he was holding a treasure.
His gaze made me pause for breath.
Looking at the card in the security guard's hand, I timidly said.
"That card... can you not waste it here?"
I told him about my mother's illness, and he immediately took me to the car. The driver quickly arrived at the hospital.
Coincidentally, I saw my mother was sent into the operating room.
I finally raised enough money for the surgery and paid off the previous debt.
But this time, my mother couldn't come out of the operating room.
I completely lost the only relative in this world.
When dealing with my mother's affairs, Steven has been by my side.
At that moment, I could show my vulnerability to him.
My tears wet his first shirt worth 500 dollars.
But he smiled and said jokingly, 'It's okay, I'll buy you a bunch of shirts worth 500 dollars in the future to wipe your tears.'
His nonsense made me laugh.
The knocking on the door outside the hotel pulled me out of my memories.
I shouted loudly, "No room service!"
This was finally quiet again.
I didn't sleep all night, and there were two big dark circles under my eyes.
After tidying up a bit, when I was ready to leave the hotel, I met Steven and Lara coming in.
When Steven saw me, he frowned.
"I thought you really left, but it turns out you were secretly following me?"
The man in front of me had only indifferent expression on his face, and I couldn't find a trace of three years ago.
Lara affectionately linked her arm with his and handed him the coffee.
"Mr. Lee, don't you understand? This just shows that Janice really loves you. Girls are like this, they just get angry and want you to coax them."
I hadn't slept all night, I didn't even have the strength to speak, now I just wanted to eat something to replenish my energy.
I originally wanted to leave directly, but Steven's expression darkened after hearing her words.
"She wants me to coax her? Don't I have to go to work? What am I working so hard for every day?"
Lara looked at me with a hint of pride in her gaze, but her tone was a bit annoyed.
"Janice, Mr. Lee has been quite busy recently. You should learn to be considerate a little bit. Don't make trouble, okay?"
I ignored Lara directly and looked straight at Steven.
"If I remember correctly, you tried to be a member of the Lee family for your own aim at the beginning, right? When we first met, wasn't that your goal? What does it have to do with me? Can't you just relax without me?"
"Is it tiring to coax me? I remember that it seems like I've been coaxing you for the past three years? Now that I want a divorce, isn't it perfect for you? You can relax from now on."
The anger in Steven's gaze was about to burst out.
I had a cold expression and calmly said,
"Don't think too much, our marriage was just a coincidence."
"When I say divorce, it means divorce. I'm not interested in playing hard to get."
After speaking, I didn't look at them and walked out of the hotel.
Steven was so angry that he clenched his teeth and turned around to chase after.
But he was stopped by Lara, who grabbed his arm.
"Mr. Lee, the partner has been waiting for a long time..."
After saying that, Steven took out his phone and called me.
"Janice, my mother came all the way from the old house to see you today. She brought traditional Chinese medicine for you. You must come back with me. Today is not a day for you to mess around!"
I thought he had come to his senses and was going to sign, but I didn't expect him to actually order me to go home.
I curled up the corner of my lips.
Well, it was time for his mother to know how that child really died!
And I would tell her what kind of wealth and luxury did I gain in the Lee family in these two years!
"Got it."
After agreeing, I hung up immediately and went to the mall for shopping after breakfast.
Before, in order to be a good daughter-in-law of the Lee family, I couldn't dress according to my own preferences.
I couldn't eat according to my own preferences.
I couldn't be myself.
That was enough!
I used Steven's card for shopping, but I thought this was the spiritual damage fee I deserved.
Steven saw the payment record and sent me a message.
[Are you feeling better? Remember to come home early, mom is waiting for you.]
Looking at him calling her mom, someone who didn't know their relationship would thought they got along well with each other.
It seems that he has forgotten how hard he tried to please them when he first entered the Lee family.
He was no longer Steven that I met three years ago.
Now, the only one alive was the heir of the Lee family.
When I stepped into the house, a heavy ashtray came flying towards me.
I quickly dodged and the object landed on the ground with a dull sound.
"You still know how to come home? Why didn't you die outside!"
Mrs. Lee's tone was cold and her delicate and sharp face was filled with resentment.
"You're not dead yet, so I should die later than you."
Just at this moment, Steven happened to come in and when he heard my words, he raised his hand and was about to slap me.
"Hit! Hit me right here, where I have been with you for three years! Hit me right here, where I lost a child for the Lee family!"
"Hit right in front of the culprit who killed my child! Steven, hit me!"
