Chapter 3

The entire pavilion went dead silent, save for the hum of the cooling fans and the red indicators glowing on six broadcast lenses.

"Your brother?" I pulled back an inch, staring between Lucian’s unbothered posture and Adrian’s flushed face.

Lucian didn't release my shoulder. His fingers tightened just enough to anchor me against the brick wall.

"You always did have terrible timing, Adrian," Lucian said, his voice flat, almost bored. "Ten years abroad, and you still kick down doors like an insecure toddler."

"Shut your mouth!" Adrian lunged forward, but two private security officers Lucian had brought stepped from the shadows near the terrace, blocking his path. "You were stripped of your inheritance when the old man threw your mother onto the street. You have zero authority in this family."

"Family?" Lucian let out a dry sound from the back of his throat. "I don't recall asking for a seat at your table. But since you brought up authority—who do you think signed the syndication rights for this network?"

Adrian froze. The color drained from his ears. "What did you say?"

"Check the distributor registry," Lucian said, tilting his head toward the production monitors. "You bought a vanity sponsorship. I bought the parent company six months ago. Every camera, every cable, every contract on this sand belongs to me."

"You set this up," Adrian hissed, his fists clenching so violently his knuckles turned white. "You lured her here to spite me."

"I don't need a reality show to ruin you, little brother," Lucian answered, stepping around me so he stood squarely between Adrian and my frame. "You do that quite well on your own."

Adrian turned his venom on me. "Nora. Get your things. Now."

"I’m not going anywhere with you," I said, stepping out from behind Lucian so my face was clear on the live feed. "Our marriage ended in that ballroom."

"A petulant stunt!" Adrian barked, jabbing an index finger toward me. "You think you can survive out here without my name? Without my money? Your brother’s treatment in Zurich costs four hundred thousand dollars a month. You emptied your mother's offshore trust on the first wire, didn't you? What happens next month? What happens when the second invoice lands?"

A cold weight dropped into my chest, but before I could speak, Lucian slid a sleek black smartphone from his pocket and tapped the glass twice.

"It won't land," Lucian said.

Adrian sneered. "Stay out of this, Lucian. You don't know the first thing about St. Jude's Private Pavilion—"

"I know they were carrying twelve million in delinquent municipal bonds," Lucian interrupted smoothly. "My holding firm cleared their entire debt ledger twenty minutes ago. In exchange, I acquired the deed, the operating license, and your brother's care contract. Leo's care is fully funded through recovery, signed under my personal trust."

Adrian's mouth opened, but nothing came out.

"The divorce petition was delivered to your penthouse desk by courier at noon," Lucian added, stepping directly into Adrian’s space. "She owes you nothing. She belongs to no one. If you keep stalking her on my set, Adrian, you aren't an aggrieved husband. You're just a pathetic trespasser."

"You son of a bitch!" Adrian roared. He whipped an official manila folder from his suit jacket and slammed it against the host's chest. "She doesn't belong on this set anyway! Look at the registry! Look at the fingerprint scans!"

The host fumbled with the folder, his eyes widening as he read the top sheet.

"This woman isn't Maya Bennett," Adrian shouted into the boom mic, making sure the live stream picked up every syllable. "Maya Bennett is in a private rehabilitation facility outside Miami. This fraud stole her boarding pass and forged her entry documents! Her real name is Nora Vance—Bennett's disowned eldest daughter! She’s an impostor! Under section four of your broadcast regulations, she must be disqualified and removed in handcuffs!"

Gasps broke out among the production crew. The floor manager panicked, waving his hands at the control booth.

"Cut the feed!" someone yelled.

"Keep the lenses rolling," Lucian countered, his tone cutting through the noise like an axe. "Every single one of them."

Adrian smiled, ugly and victorious. "You can't override standard fraud clauses, brother. The network will be sued into oblivion if an unregistered contestant wins the purse. Pack your bag, Nora. You're done."

I looked at the floor for two seconds.

I thought about the dark hotel suite. I thought about Vanessa wearing my mother’s emerald against her throat. I thought about the year I spent tiptoeing through the shadows just to keep Leo breathing while Adrian used my mother's shares to build his empire.

If I ran now, I would run forever.

"Give me the microphone," I told the host.

"Evelyn—or Nora—" the host stammered, backing away. "The legal team—"

I snatched the wireless mic straight out of his hand.

Lucian looked at me. He didn't try to stop me. A faint spark flared in those pale gray eyes, watching to see what I would do with the flames.

I walked directly toward the center camera, stopping three inches from the red tally light.

"He's right," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the entire soundstage. "My name isn't Maya Bennett. I am Nora Bennett. And for the past twelve months, I was Adrian Hawthorne's secret wife."

Adrian’s jaw dropped. "Nora, shut your mouth—"

"Shut yours," I snapped without looking at him, keeping my eyes drilled into the broadcast lens. "You hid our marriage because you were terrified your investors would realize my mother's shares were the only collateral propping up your acquisition. You promised me safety for my sick brother. And while I sat in our penthouse waiting for our public wedding, you were in bed with my stepsister, hanging my dead mother's jewelry on her neck."

"Turn it off!" Adrian lunged toward the main power strip, but Lucian’s guards pinned him by both arms, forcing him to his knees on the wooden boards.

"I took that flight because it was the only border your lawyers couldn't close in an hour," I continued, speaking to the millions watching on their phones and televisions. "I broke the rules. I lied about my name to survive a predator who weaponized my dying family. If that disqualifies me from this show, fine. Call the police. Bring the boat. But don't you dare let this coward pretend he came here out of love."

I dropped the microphone onto the floor. The metal bounced with a sharp, hollow crack.

I stood there, my chin raised, waiting for the security guards to escort me off the sand. I braced for the outrage, the mockery, the internet calling me an opportunist.

Instead, the wall behind the host flickered.

The live chat overlay, which had been frozen under network traffic, suddenly unlocked.

A torrent of green and white text flooded the four massive digital screens:

*DON'T YOU DARE CUT HER MIC!*

*HE HELD HER BROTHER HOSTAGE?!*

*ARREST ADRIAN HAWTHORNE!*

*NORA STAYS! NORA STAYS!*

*If you kick her off, we cancel our subscriptions!*

The viewership ticker didn't drop. It rocketed past eight million, then nine, shattering every engagement record in the network’s ten-year history.

The producer dropped his walkie-talkie, his face pale as he stared at his tablet. He jogged over to Lucian, whispering furiously while pointing at the live data spikes.

Lucian didn't look at the tablet. He kept his eyes locked on mine.

"Get him off my island," Lucian ordered, gesturing toward Adrian.

"This isn't over, Nora!" Adrian shouted, thrashing against the guards as they dragged him down the deck steps toward his helicopter. "You hear me?! You have nothing!"

The glass doors slid shut, cutting off his screams.

The host swallowed hard, straightened his blazer, and stepped back into the key light, glancing nervously at the producer.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the host announced, his voice trembling slightly before finding its professional pitch. "Due to unprecedented live audience demand and an emergency ruling from our executive sponsor... Nora Bennett's contestant status remains active."

A ragged breath left my lungs.

"However," the host added, reading a fresh prompt scrolling across his monitor, "her rule violation cannot go entirely unpenalized. The network has issued a conditional survival clause."

I narrowed my eyes. "What clause?"

"You have seven days on this island, Nora," the host said, smiling tightly for the millions of viewers. "To secure your permanent spot and retain your legal immunity through the finale, you must receive a formal, public proposal from one of your fellow male contestants before the week expires. If not a single man offers you a ring by midnight on day seven... you are eliminated immediately."

Silence fell over the lounge again.

I turned my head. Across the room, Lucian stood leaning against the wooden pillar, his hands buried in his pockets, watching me with a cold, unreadable smirk.
