Chapter 1
Dinner.
Arnold Burton was absent-minded, and his hand holding the fork was trembling.
I called him a few times before he came back to his senses.
"Uh, what's wrong?" Arnold asked.
"I have something to tell you," I said to him.
I touched my lower abdomen and a touch of sweet happiness in my heart. Just as I was about to speak, I saw that the crystal chandelier above Arnold's head was shaking!
"Arnold!"
I shouted as I threw myself at Arnold, and both of us fell to the ground due to inertia.
The next second, the crystal chandelier brushed against the edge of our bodies and shattered on the ground.
The glass shards flew towards me and scratched my arm, causing it to bleed.
That was so close! I thought to myself.
Before I could recover from my shock, I heard a strange sound coming from Arnold.
"The target has passed the test. Congratulations, Arnold Burton! You have succeeded in winning the target's heart. Avril Dunbar will wake up soon."
Hearing this, I wondered, What's that sound?
I know Avril and Arnold are childhood sweethearts.
But hasn't Avril become a vegetable and had been lying unconsciously in the hospital for five years?
Wake up?
I was confused.
Meanwhile, Arnold got up from the ground. His lips were trembling, and his face showed rapture.
An uneasy feeling rose in my heart.
"Arnold, you..."
Without waiting for me to finish my words, Arnold picked up the car key and strode towards the door.
After taking a few steps, Arnold suddenly remembered to check on my condition. But he didn't walk back to me. He just stood there and looked at my pale face.
He said, "You're scared. Go back to your room and have a good rest.
"I have something else to do."
Then, he left without looking back.
"Arnold!"
I shouted from behind. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. I just fell hard to the ground, and it seemed that the baby also got hurt.
Blood flowed down my legs. I held my breath.
I called to Arnold, "Arnold. Arnold.
"Come back..."
But instead of hearing Arnold's response, I heard the sound of the car engine coming from outside. Arnold had left.
I struggled to get up and dialed 911. After a while, I lay on my back on the floor and gasped in pain.
The floor was very cold, and I was chilled to the bone.
The ambulance arrived soon.
As I lay on the stretcher, that strange voice sounded again. I realized that it wasn't on Arnold anymore.
"Arnold's task is completed. After dealing with you, I can take a vacation."
I asked it in my heart, Dealing with me?
"That's right. In fact, the reason why Avril can wake up is that we used your life as an exchange."
I closed my eyes and felt extreme pain in both my body and heart.
"Does Arnold know about it?" I asked.
It replied, "There is a balance between blessings and misfortunes. If he gets good fortune in an illegal way, misfortunes will come to him.
"But no one knows what misfortunes will go to him. Of course, he doesn't, too."
"Arnold only knows that as long as your love for him reaches a certain level, Avril will wake up."
"To a certain level?" I asked in confusion.
"When you are willing to give up your own life to save him in a time of crisis, that's it," it explained.
Hearing this, I thought of Arnold's absent-minded look at dinner just now.
It turned out that he had already known that the crystal chandelier would fall. That was a test that he and the system had set up for me.
He was so nervous just now because he was afraid that if I didn't pass the test, Avril wouldn't be able to wake up.
After thinking this through, I felt heartbroken.
I sneered in my heart, So that's it.
Arnold, you lied to me from the very beginning.
Suddenly, the system said to me, "It's time for you to go."
I was caught off guard. The next second, the sound of metal colliding sounded, and I felt extreme pain in every part of my body.
A moment later, my soul floated in the air.
It was amazing that no one except for me in the ambulance was injured.
Then, there was a great flurry on the street.
"It's a car accident. Vibra Specialty Hospital is close!" someone shouted.
Chapter 2
"Hurry up! Send her to the hospital!"
Human life is of greater value than everything. Thus, many cars made way for the ambulance along the way.
And I followed them all the way.
I watched as the nurses carried my body onto the stretcher and hurried into the hospital.
The moment they passed through the door, Arnold also rushed in with an anxious expression.
Then...
He brushed past me, who was on the stretcher.
I was covered in blood, so Arnold didn't recognize me.
His eyes were full of desire to see Avril, who had just woken up.
I really didn't understand it.
For the past five years, Arnold had never allowed me to do housework.
He got up at 6 a.m. every day in order to buy me my favorite bread for breakfast.
He carefully adjusted his passenger seat for me.
Apart from that, he didn't even allow any of his friends in that passenger seat because he was afraid that if they adjusted the seat, I would feel uncomfortable sitting there later.
Can he really set up such a big con when he doesn't love me at all? I couldn't help wondering.
I followed behind Arnold unwillingly.
Finally, he stopped at the door of Avril's ward.
After a long while, Arnold took a deep breath and held the door handle.
At that moment, I thought that Arnold must be both expectant and afraid.
Suddenly, the sound of something falling to the ground came from inside the ward, followed by screams.
Arnold hurriedly pushed the door open and went in, only to see Avril sitting on the ground.
As soon as Avril saw him, she said helplessly, "Arnold, I think I can't walk now."
She touched her leg in a trance and sounded very down.
"If I can't stand up again, how can I dance?
"I've been dancing the ballet since I was a kid. And it is also my future. Why did God do this to me?
"Why? Why?
"I'd rather die!"
As she spoke, her voice became louder and louder. In the end, she cried out in sorrow and hit the ground desperately.
Arnold's eyes turned red because he felt very sorry for Avril.
He stepped forward and hugged her tightly as if he was guarding his lost treasure.
He choked with sobs and said, "Ava, calm down.
"The doctor said that you've been lying in bed for too long. When you wake up again, you will naturally find that you can't control your body as well as before.
"It's just that your leg muscles have atrophied. As long as you persist in doing rehabilitation exercises, you can recover."
"Really? Avril grabbed Arnold's sleeve tightly, as if she was grabbing a life-saving straw.
"You didn't lie to me, right?" she asked.
"Of course," Arnold replied.
After hearing Arnold's answer, Avril stopped crying and showed a smile. Then, she threw herself into Arnold's arms.
"Arnold, I only have you now. You will always be with me and accompany me until I stand up again, right?" Avril asked.
"I'll be there as long as you need me," Arnold said.
But at the same time, I felt enormous pain in my heart.
On the day I lost my child in a car accident, my husband made a promise to another woman.
Just now, I kept telling myself that Arnold loved me by recalling our beautiful past. But what happened between Arnold and Avril just now was like a head-on blow to me. It made me deeply realize that I was just Arnold's target in his task.
Avril had woken up, so he was done with me.
Five years ago, Arnold confessed his love for Avril, but Avril rejected him. She refused to marry into the Burton family. Later, she turned against her family and went abroad for her dream.
Avril was ambitious, and she was destined to be a successful woman.
In just one year, she had become the famous Swan Princess in the world of ballet.
Unfortunately, Avril's good times didn't last long. On the way back from a competition, she had a car accident and became a vegetable.
It was around that time that I met Arnold.
At that time, he was like a dead man walking, drowning in sorrow and drunkenness every day. I couldn't pull him out, so I joined him.
Instead of trying to persuade him to stop, I drank with him. At that time, I didn't expect that I would get really drunk by drinking just less than half a glass of alcohol. When I was drunk, I smashed all Arnold's wine crazily and also vomited on his coat.
Then, Arnold had no choice but to stop drinking, and he also had to take care of me.
However, I didn't just be quiet and wait for him to take care of me. Instead, I sang on the road and grabbed the wire pole, shouting to the world him how much I loved Arnold.
Chapter 3
After that day, Arnold no longer gave me the cold shoulder. He began to respond to me.
A year later, Arnold proposed to me.
That day, he rented a whole amusement park. When he asked me if I was willing to marry him, I felt that none of the amusement projects or the dazzling lights was as charming as his shining eyes.
It was actually very unexpected to me that Arnold was willing to use his marriage just to complete a task.
Tears welled up in my eyes. I turned around and tried to float away, but I bumped into the doctor who had rushed over... The doctor passed through my body because I was a soul now.
After the doctor carefully examined Avril's body, he said to Arnold, "I am very surprised that she could wake up again. Please forgive me if I say something that you don't like to hear.
"But I've discussed it with other doctors. They all said that the possibility of her waking up was very small.
"This is indeed a medical miracle."
Hearing this, I stopped and looked at Arnold.
Then, I saw that he tapped Avril's forehead and said dotingly, "Did you hear that?
"Don't complain about it, OK? You've made a rare miracle. So, rehabilitation exercises should be just a piece of cake to you."
Miracle? I repeated the word in my heart mockingly.
I felt my heart ache. It took me a while to calm down. Then, I returned to the operating room where my body was in.
I saw myself lying quietly on the operating table.
My face was pale.
The surgeons kept trying to wake me up using the defibrillator.
My upper body was forced to rise and fall again and again.
The ECG monitor kept beeping.
Finally, it changed from a straight line to a curve.
All of this was the so-called miracle in Arnold's eyes.
Yeah. A miracle. I sneered in my heart.
I burst out laughing, but tears rolled down my cheeks.
As I could float in the air, I could see everything more clearly.
I saw that Arnold gently placed Avril on the bed and examined her injuries.
Avril got a slight wound on her knee.
But Arnold still felt very worried. He held Avril's lower leg and frowned.
"It hurts," Avril said.
"Let me check."
Arnold leaned forward gently, like a devout believer.
I couldn't stand it anymore. I flew back desperately, trying to escape from the hospital. I didn't want to see Arnold again.
I didn't care where I was going. I just wanted to run far away from Arnold.
But before I could get out of this building, a sharp pain swept over me.
The pain was so sharp that I felt like my soul was about to scatter.
It seemed that I couldn't go too far away from Arnold.
How could this be? I wondered.
I tried my best to recall.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through my mind. I don't seem to belong to this world. Why is my connection with Arnold so strong?
I felt that I had forgotten something.
But when I was about to grasp those memories, my head started to hurt.
At this moment, footsteps sounded in the corridor.
A nurse passed by, and I stopped recalling.
I watched as the nurse bent down and picked up a bag of traditional medicine on the floor.
She murmured, "Who dropped them here?"
Then, she read the label on the bag.
"Louisa Palmer. Medicine to relieve menstrual pain. Once a..."
Louisa Palmer was me. I knew Arnold cared about Avril, but I didn't expect that he would still remember that I always felt weak during my period.
If it were in the past, I would definitely feel very touched.
But what happened just now had chilled my heart.
When Avril fell, Arnold panicked. He rushed over and was so flustered that he even threw away the medicine bag in his hand.
I was like that bag of traditional medicine because we shared the same fate¬¬. We were all thrown away by Arnold.
The days in the hospital were really boring.
Every day, I watched Arnold help Avril walk step by step on the shady path in the park.
Arnold accompanied Avril patiently during her rehabilitation and even skipped several meetings.
But last weekend, I asked Arnold to accompany me to Mountain Rainier for a travel.
I sat next to him, searching for all kinds of travel tips online. I had also collected a lot of notes.
From food to accommodation, I kept talking about them. But I got no response from Arnold at all.
I turned my head and saw that Arnold was staring at a document in his hand with a frown.
I was unhappy and nudged him.
Then, he turned his head and said impatiently, "Louisa, I'm busy with my work. I really don't have time for it."
He looked very annoyed.
I understood that no one wanted to be disturbed when they were working.
So, I didn't complain. I stopped talking and then deleted all the notes I had collected.
But now, looking at Arnold, I couldn't help wondering, Why isn't he busy now?
Suddenly, there was a lot of noise in the corridor.
"Hurry up! The Swan Princess, Avril Dunbar, is in this room," someone shouted.
I leaned against the doorframe curiously and watched a group of reporters rush into Avril's ward.
