Chapter 1
Pregnant and clutching my test report, I was on my way to find Logan Brooks when I encountered a landslide.
The car was buried under rubble for two days before my phone finally received a signal. I weakly called Logan for help.
His ex-girlfriend Rebecca Amore answered the phone, "Logan's busy. Who's this?"
Seeing no response, she went to ask Logan, "Do you know this number?"
Logan's cold voice came through the receiver.
"No."
I raised my phone in confusion.
The next moment, a deafening noise from above as giant rocks rolled down, engulfing me in darkness.
Before losing consciousness, I heard the sound of an ambulance.
Fortunately, I didn't foolishly call only Logan.
Upon waking up in the hospital, I was relieved to find the child unharmed.
On the day of discharge, I unexpectedly saw Logan in the neighboring ward, carefully feeding his ex-girlfriend food.
We had been together for five years, but I never knew Logan could be so tender with someone else.
It dawned on me that it wasn't that he couldn't, but rather, he didn't want to waste his time on me.
A sharp, piercing pain spread through my heart as I looked at the pregnancy test report, folding it and tucking it into my pocket.
I thought, "The news of my pregnancy is something Logan doesn't need to know. I can raise the child on my own.
I want no more involvement with Logan."
But suddenly, Logan spotted me not far away. He immediately walked out of the ward, gently closing the door to block Rebecca from my view.
"Why are you here?" Logan's tone was unfriendly.
He had no idea what I had been through, so my appearance now seemed suspicious to him.
If only Logan had shown even a hint of concern, he would have noticed my pale, sickly appearance, a mere shadow of my former self.
"It has anything to do with you."
I calmly looked at him.
Logan was taken aback because I had never spoken to him this way before.
Looking at me, he said, "You're just in time. Rebecca's condition can't wait any longer. The doctor has developed a special drug, untested clinically. Since your height and weight are similar to Rebecca's, you can try the drug for her."
"So, this is the reason you're with me?"
I gazed at Logan in disbelief.
Logan and I were in the same college. I first saw him at a school sports event, where he confidently exchanged contact information with me after winning a race.
The clean-cut and high-spirited young man shone in the sunlight, leaving me captivated amidst the cheers of the crowd.
Later, I learned that he sought me out because, like his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca, I, too, specialized in dance.
I was nothing but a stand-in for Rebecca from beginning to end.
"Rebecca is just a friend now. Can you stop being so suspicious all the time?"
Logan took out his phone and dialed, speaking with a firm tone. "George, bring the medicine."
Still pregnant, I knew taking such a potent drug would affect the child. Even if I weren't pregnant, I would never agree to be Logan's guinea pig.
"If you want to try, do it yourself!"
I felt my stomach ached. Not wanting to waste time with Logan, I turned to leave.
Logan forcefully grabbed my arm, causing me to stumble.
Instinctively, I protected my stomach.
He said, "You've always wanted a child, right? If you try the drug for Rebecca, I'll marry you, and we'll have a child."
As he spoke, Logan sent a few more messages from his phone.
"The wedding is already arranged."
Looking up at Logan, who was still as dazzling as he was in college, I felt as if just looking up at him required all my strength.
Chapter 2
Perhaps he had forgotten why I had been so persistent in wanting a child.
Back when Logan was just starting his business and funds were tight, I endured sleeping in the basement with him and surviving on cold steamed bread for a month. Once, in his haste, he left some documents at home, and in my rush to deliver them, I stumbled and fell on the way.
That was when I lost our first child.
I had lost it before I even knew it was there.
My earliest memories were of the orphanage, where I was ostracized and targeted. Only the matron showed me genuine kindness, but she had too many children to care for. I didn't dare to compete or stand out. In many crucial moments in my life, I faced alone. That was why, as I grew older, I yearned more than anyone for a happy, complete family.
After that accident, the doctor said because of my miscarriage and malnutrition, my body was damaged. Getting pregnant became even more challenging. Over the years, I took countless medications and saw numerous doctors, all to finally have my own child.
Now, that child had become Logan's bargaining chip.
"Logan, I don't need it anymore."
Looking at me, Logan had a hint of mockery on his face upon hearing my words.
"Don't need it? Fay, stop pretending."
In Logan's eyes, I was good at pretending.
To support Logan, I had willingly given up coveted dance troupe invitations and plunged into endless commercial performances. From being a singer's backup dancer to performing at mall openings, I took on every opportunity, regardless of the conditions.
Sometimes, the stages were shabby, wet, and slippery, leaving me bruised all over after each show. Once, I even tore a ligament severely, but I never dared to mention a word of it to Logan, fearing he'd feel guilty.
Even if Logan accidentally discovered my injuries, I always played it off, telling him they were just makeup scars to give him a scare.
He always believed it, never truly caring whether I was actually hurt.
During those dark, hopeless times when there seemed no way out, he just needed a living being by his side.
Logan didn't care who the living being was. Whether it was a cat, a dog, or me, it made no difference to him.
He knew what I desired most and exactly how to manipulate me.
But I truly didn't need it anymore. I already had my child, and I would give my baby a warm, happy home.
As I was about to speak, Rebecca opened the door and walked out.
"Are you Fay Tautou? I'm Rebecca. I heard you're going to try the medicine for me. Thank you."
Rebecca reached out her hand for a handshake, but I averted my eyes, offering no response.
Logan, frowning, looked at me, his words laced with reprimand.
"Fay, do you have any manners?"
"I have OCD."
I mocked Logan with a sneer.
"Let it go, Logan. After all, the side effects of the drug are unknown. The doctor even said it might cause dizziness, vomiting, or even severe bleeding. If Fay doesn't want to try it, let it be. Don't pressure her."
Rebecca, feeling uneasy, tugged at Logan's shirt, clearly not wanting all the attention on me.
"Fay, can't you be reasonable? Rebecca is a patient. Can't you accommodate her?"
Logan's frown was a familiar expression, so I knew he was angry.
Normally, if he frowned, regardless of whose fault it was, I would be the first to apologize.
But now, I just wanted to leave before George arrived with his men.
Seeing me ready to leave, Logan immediately blocked my path.
"Fay, try the medicine for Rebecca, or else, don't ever think about getting anything!"
He was brimming with confidence, certain that I would agree.
Before I could respond, George had already arrived at the hospital with a few bodyguards.
"Mr. Brooks, the medicine is here."
Chapter 3
George raised the bottle in his hand.
I cautiously took a step back, accidentally bumping into Rebecca beside me.
I didn't exert much force, yet Rebecca ended up sitting on the ground, her knee scraped.
"Fay, are you ever going to stop?"
Logan forcefully pushed me away as if I were a raging beast about to harm his precious Rebecca.
"Rebecca, are you okay?"
Logan looked at Rebecca with concern.
I lowered my gaze, perplexed, as I watched Logan.
I thought, "If he cherishes her so much, why did he separate from Rebecca in the first place, and why did he end up with me?
If he truly loved her back then, how could he allow me to replace the person he likes, keeping me by his side for five years?"
Logan helped Rebecca up, glaring at me.
"Fay, I've already promised you a child. What more do you want?"
"I said I don't need it. I won't try the medicine, and I won't marry you, Logan. Can't you understand?"
"Not try it? You don't have a choice!"
With just a glance from Logan, his bodyguards behind me immediately restrained me.
"George, make her take the medicine."
I struggled but couldn't break free. George approached with the medicine, and in my panic, I looked desperately at Logan.
"Logan, I'm pregnant! You can't make me try the medicine!"
Logan thought I was making excuses to avoid taking the medication and scoffed.
"Fay, we've been taking precautions all along. You can't possibly be pregnant."
The failure rate of those precautions was five percent. Logan refused even to verify.
Beside me, George unscrewed the bottle cap.
I trembled with fear all over my body.
"Logan, our child is just two months old. The prenatal report is in my pocket. Take it out and see if I'm lying!"
Upon hearing my words, George halted, turning to Logan for direction.
"Mr. Brooks, if what she says is true..."
Logan, supporting Rebecca and standing very close to me, gazed at me before speaking. "Then give up her child!"
I struggled desperately."Logan! I'm really carrying our child. Please, I beg you. It took so much effort for me to conceive. I can't take the medicine!"
No one wanted to listen to me anymore.
George held my chin and poured the medicine into my mouth.
The medicine wasn't bitter, but it brought pain.
The pain shook my entire being.
It felt like an eternity before the bodyguard finally released me. I collapsed on the floor, feeling like a stagnant pool by the roadside.
Logan approached, lifting me and placing me on an empty bed in the next room.
"Be a good girl. Rest assured, no matter what happens, you're the Mrs. Brooks and you will always be my only one. The wedding is in three months. Rest well."
After saying that, Logan lightly kissed my forehead before leaving with his entourage.
I numbly raised my hand, vigorously wiping the spot where he had kissed me.
Suddenly, my stomach began to ache severely. Deep red blood gushed out in large amounts. I quickly lost consciousness.
Logan hadn't gone far when chaos erupted in the corridor. He watched as a group of doctors burst into my room, then emerged, pushing me, who was drenched in blood.
As we passed each other, the prenatal report fell out of my pocket.
George immediately picked it up.
He took a look, his voice trembling. "Mr. Brooks, she is indeed pregnant!"
