Chapter 1
My boss took me to a cocktail party, but when I got there, I realized it was just a private gathering.
My ex-boyfriend Edwin Jayden, whom I had broken up with three years ago, harassed me, and I couldn't stand it any longer. "Edwin, we broke up! Why are you doing this?"
Suddenly, a voice came out from the crowd, "Wow, you are the girl who broke up with Edwin!"
"Edwin hasn't been over you these past few years."
"Heh, he just wants to torture me." I sneered.
Suddenly, the room became quiet.
"Oh my god, what word did I just use?" I thought.
I wanted to explain, but Edwin seemed to be amused.
He stroked his wine glass with his fingers. "I do want to torture you."
I was rendered speechless.
So embarrassing!

I was brought to the party by my boss,
and only then did I realize that my boss and my ex-boyfriend, whom I had broken up with three years ago, were actually childhood friends.
Suddenly, I remembered many years when Edwin had told me about his childhood friend who had lived abroad.
He was afraid that I would fall in love with that person and refused to show me what he looked like.
Since graduating from college and breaking up with Edwin, I have been working at Watson Media.
I used to wonder why Watson Media hired me as a PR intern with a salary of ten thousand dollars.
I knew I was capable, but it was still unbelievable for an intern at Watson Media to be offered such a high salary.
As a result, there was a time when I was misunderstood as a "privileged hire" in the company.
However, I had never even met the boss before. How could I be considered privileged?
Fortunately, I was good at my job.
Otherwise, I might have thought that my stingy CEO was trying to hit on me.
My boss, Patrick Chane, asked me to sit next to Edwin.
I stole a glance at Edwin, who was a little distance away from me, and whispered, "No, I'm allergic to that person."
Just then, Edwin's voice boomed, "I heard that you are allergic to me?"
Almost standing up in shock,
I turned around and said in a flattering way, "Mr. Jayden, you are so handsome. Who would be allergic to a handsome guy like you?"
Patrick interjected, "You just solemnly swore in front of me that you were allergic to him."
I rolled my eyes at Patrick, telling him to shut up.
So, I couldn't refuse the proposal to sit next to Edwin.
Just as I sat down, I suddenly realized that I wasn't very familiar with most of the people in the room.
There were a few girls in the crowd, but none of whom I recognized.
At the same time, they all focused their gaze on Edwin, who was beside me, as if waiting for him to speak.
Edwin remained silent, and the others didn't dare to say anything.
I wondered if he was mad because of what I just said.
But Edwin wasn't that kind of person in my eyes.
I downed the wine in front of me in one gulp, and just as I finished it, it was filled up again.
I followed the hand holding the glass and coincidentally met Edwin's face.
"What are you doing?"
Edwin's face showed no emotion. "I, the person you're allergic to, just poured that wine. Let's see if it can poison you to death."
I replied, "Edwin, why are you so petty?"
I just didn't expect a grown man to be so sensitive.
Actions speak louder than words!
As my gaze fell on the refilled glass, I sighed and felt an inexplicable sense of frustration.
Actually, I couldn't drink much.
After drinking three glasses in a row, I seriously doubted whether Edwin did it intentionally.
...
Chapter 2
Patrick smiled and said, "Edwin, don't forget what you promised me."
I glanced at Patrick and saw that he had an expression as if he had hit the jackpot. Did they make some kind of deal?
Before I could retract my gaze, my neck was grabbed, and I was forced to turn towards Edwin's cold face.
Edwin whispered, his voice tinged with jealousy, "Who is better looking, him or me?"
My heart skipped a beat.
I lowered my eyes and looked away. "My boss, of course."
Patrick's expression changed abruptly.
I was stunned.
"Who the hell is Edwin? Why is Patrick so scared?
Didn't they grow up together?
Is it really necessary for Patrick to be that scared?" I wondered.
I sighed helplessly, "Dear boss, are you afraid of Edwin?"
Patrick shuddered, looked at me, and said with a wry smile, "Please watch your language."
Before his voice could fade away,
Edwin took a bottle of whiskey and placed it in front of Patrick.
His tone was indifferent, "Patrick, we haven't had a drink in a long time."
I looked at the whiskey in front of Patrick, feeling a little amazed.
"Does Edwin want Patrick to finish it all?" I wondered.
Patrick wore a troubled face. "Edwin, you just came back. Do we have to do this?"
Edwin glanced at me and said, "It's just a drink."
I sneered when I heard this. "Who would ask his friend to finish a bottle of whiskey?"
Edwin definitely played a prank on Patrick.
Someone asked me to stop them.
How could I refuse the proposal?
No one dared to do it, and I was born to be a good person.
I knew Edwin's temper a bit. So, I made up my mind and snatched the bottle from his hand.
But to prevent him from being crazy again, I changed my tone, "Dear Edwin, can you drink a little less?"
"Let Patrick have less as well."
Edwin's face turned expressionless as if by magic.
I was so annoyed that I wanted to leave right away.
After a few seconds of silence, I lowered my head and said, "Most importantly, you should drink less. My boss is not important."
I looked at Edwin, putting aside my past grudges.
After a long time, Edwin finally relaxed.
At the same time, Patrick also breathed a sigh of relief.
The whiskey bottle in front of Patrick was gone, but his glass was filled almost to the brim with whiskey.
Thinking that Patrick had just had an appendectomy and that it was not appropriate for him to drink alcohol,
I was vexed about whether to help Patrick.
Then, Patrick sent a message for help.
Why me out of all the people present?
I frowned and looked in Patrick's direction, but he didn't even glance at me.
I was extremely annoyed. If I had known this would happen, I would have refused Patrick's offer without blinking an eye, even if he offered me ten thousand dollars a month.
He really put me in a difficult position.
"With Edwin's bad temper, what can I do to help Patrick?
I can't throw myself at him just to help Patrick, right?" I wondered.
I pursed my lips and said nothing, cautiously tugging at Edwin's sleeve.
Carefully approaching him, I said in a severe and low voice, "Edwin, please stop. If you make Patrick sick, no one will pay me."
Edwin lowered his eyes and looked at me, his long eyelashes slightly curved and trembling. "Are you genuinely concerned about Patrick or just trying to coax me?"
I knew my situation, so I answered, "Of course, I'm coaxing you."
I had to give in!
Just as Patrick felt hopeless and reached for his glass, Edwin said in a cold voice, "I'm just kidding, Patrick. If you are not feeling well, you don't have to drink it all."
In an instant, the atmosphere lightened up.
Patrick was sweating profusely, and the smile on his face was frozen. "Edwin, you're still so humorous."
I just understood why people say, "Kings and bears often worry their keepers even since the ancient times."
Patrick coughed and said solemnly, "Zoey, don't be so frivolous when you talk to me next time. Call me Mr. Chane."
I was taken aback. Could it be because I called Patrick "dear boss"?
While contemplating, I suddenly felt an itch in my hand.
I lowered my eyes and saw that Edwin had put down his wine glass and started playing with my hand without me realizing it.
I was discouraged, "Edwin, that tickles."
Edwin paused, his hand firmly holding mine, fingers intertwined.
I no longer felt the tickling, but it was just a bit weird to hold hands with Edwin, considering our current relationship.
I struggled but couldn't pull my hand away.
"Okay, forget it. I better not provoke Edwin and make him angry.
I don't want to drink whiskey." I thought to myself.
Chapter 3
After a while, people started getting drunk. With the help of alcohol, their courage grew, and they spoke more boldly, "Zoey, why did you break up with Edwin?"
After being stunned for a few seconds, I said in a serious voice for everyone to hear, "Actually, I feel that being in a relationship with him is like being a senior, so it is better to break up."
In conclusion, it could only be understood but not explained.
Suddenly, the whole room became eerily quiet.
A little stunned, Edwin looked at me with a frown.
I couldn't help but turn dramatic suddenly.
With teary eyes, I stared at him, and with a slightly aggrieved tone, I said, "Mr. Jayden, isn't that right?"
I must have been drunk.
A guy suddenly understood and gave Edwin a thumbs up.
I was confused, wondering.
"Shouldn't they humiliate Edwin severely on my behalf?
Why are they praising him?
How should I respond to this?"
I couldn't just say, "Yes, Edwin is really in great shape!"
Edwin changed his cold look and smiled. "I've always been gentle and considerate to my girl."
I couldn't refute it. "Ah, yes, yes."
Listening to Edwin's words, my face inexplicably felt hot.
To relieve the awkwardness, I made an excuse to go to the bathroom.
Once I came out, I felt free.
"If I had known the relationship between Edwin and Patrick, I would never have come here no matter what."
I secretly complained.
When I was about to go back to the room, I heard some noise from the men's bathroom next door.
I paused.
"Damn, this is the first time I see Edwin's girl. She is so pretty."
"That's because Edwin has good taste."
One of the men asked while washing his hands, "Do you think Edwin is really into her?"
"Of course, didn't you see the doting look in Edwin's eyes?"
"Over the years, besides that girl, who else can make Edwin jealous?"
The man suddenly realized, "I know. Edwin spoiled her."
The man next to him agreed, threw the cigarette butt on the ground, and stomped on it. "Otherwise, who do you think would dare to spread rumors like that given Edwin's character?"
"Is it that serious?" I wondered.
"Thank goodness Edwin dotes on his girl."
The voices of the two men gradually faded away.
I breathed a sigh of relief and finally came out of the bathroom.
"Does Edwin dote on me a lot?
Why don't I feel it all?
He just teased me. How is that spoiling?" I just couldn't understand.
...
When I returned to the room, I realized that most people had already left.
Only Patrick and Edwin, who seemed drunk, were left.
Edwin lay lazily on the sofa, his eyes closed, half asleep. His elbow propped up, and it seemed that a button under the collar of his shirt had popped open.
Without giving me a chance to refuse, Patrick just left Edwin to me and left.
I couldn't believe he was so afraid of looking after Edwin.
Maybe he just didn't want to pay for the taxi fare?
What a stingy man...
Feeling annoyed, I looked at the drunken Edwin and felt the urge to kill him.
The box was filled with the smell of alcohol.
Looking at his closed eyes, I couldn't help but feel my heart skip a beat.
Suddenly, I smelled the scent of whiskey.
Did he drink whiskey after I left?
With doubts in mind, I pushed his shoulder gently and said, "Edwin, wake up."
Edwin half-opened his eyes, still drowsy, and murmured, "Is it my honeybunny?"
I shook my head, "No, I'm Zoey."
Edwin said in a hoarse voice, "Nonsense! You are not Zoey. My honeybunny is called Zoey."
I wanted to retort, but Edwin closed his eyes again.
He must have been drunk.
"Fuck you, Edwin. You abandoned me and went abroad to have fun. Now you hurried back and showed up in front of me like this. Why? Do you wanna marry me?"
I cursed at him boldly, knowing that he couldn't hear me.
In fact, Edwin's friend was right about me. I am a very dramatic person.
But what they don't know is that I also love to get physical, especially with Edwin.
I leaned in and pinched his nose, causing him to struggle for breath.
Edwin's face turned visibly red.
He suddenly opened his eyes and asked softly, "Are you trying to suffocate me?"
I just felt my face burning. "Don't say it so bluntly."
Edwin changed position, sitting up straight.
I couldn't help but take a step back.
Edwin pulled my clothes and said, "I lost my ID card."
I was puzzled.
He looked at me pitifully and said, "I can't book a hotel. Can you let me stay with you tonight?"
I was going to leave him there.
But my conscience told me to take him home.
"Poor thing. I'll just keep him for one night." I thought to myself.
