Chapter 2
At three o'clock in the afternoon, the police received a call reporting the discovery of numerous body parts at a waste station in the western suburbs.
Arthur immediately led the criminal investigation team to the scene, launching a tense investigation.
In the center of the vast open-air landfill, the officers cleared a small area and laid down a plastic sheet.
On the sheet were my right leg, left arm, right arm, and head.
My broken body was gradually being pieced together.
The officers collecting the remains were agitated, discussing among themselves.
"The person's face was burned by sulfuric acid until the bones were exposed. What a huge hatred this must be!"
"The killer didn't just desecrate the body, they even mailed the left leg to the police station. How horrible!"
"In our bureau, there are just a few people, who on earth has provoked such a crazy murderer?"
Under the scorching sun, Arthur's white shirt was soaked with sweat as he focused intently on searching through the mountains of trash.
My soul hovered in the air, anxiously praying for Arthur.
If my spirit could truly help him, I hoped to bless my dear Arthur to find my body as soon as possible.
Otherwise, our son would be in danger!
Just before dawn the previous day, a group of thugs pried open our lock, attempting to break into our home.
Panicked, I picked up my sleeping son, hid him in the storage room, and locked the iron door.
In order not to wake up my son, when they broke in and stabbed me in the heart with a knife, I clenched my teeth and didn't make a sound.
I had sealed the USB drive containing evidence and the key to the storage room in a bag and swallowed it beforehand.
They were the hope I left for my son to survive and my final gift to Arthur.
Under my eager gaze, my body was soon fully reassembled.
The forensic pathologist removed his rubber gloves, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and said, "The victim's face has been severely burned with acid. It'll take time to reconstruct.
"The only clue we have now is her severed right ring finger.
"The killer must have cut off the victim's ring finger because it held something that could identify her."
Arthur stroked his chin, his gaze suddenly sharp.
"The right ring finger... That's where the wedding ring goes!
"When a body stiffens after death, the ring will be stuck at the knuckle.
"The killer must have cut off the victim's finger to steal the ring!
"Who could she be? A woman between twenty-three and twenty-five, married, and connected to the police department..."
The officers fell into deep thought, following the clues Arthur provided.
I couldn't help but burst into tears.
When Arthur proposed to me, he knelt on one knee and slipped the ring onto my ring finger.
"My love, this diamond ring is a testament to our love.
"We'll wear it forever, just like we cherish every part of our bodies."
From the moment Arthur proposed, I never took off that wedding ring.
Later, the killer cruelly severed my ring finger to take the ring.
I thought, "Arthur, you loved me so much once. How could you not think of this?"
Chapter 3
An officer suddenly realized something and said, "Captain Hewitt, the kindergarten called this morning saying your wife didn't drop off your son.
"Do you think she might have..."
Arthur coldly interrupted him, "She values her life very much, so nothing would have happened to her.
"She's just trying to use our son to threaten me.
"Hmph, I'd rather lose our son than have anything to do with that woman!"
The senior detective next to him sighed, "Arthur, you can't entirely blame Luisa for your parents' accident.
"She is also a victim. She has just been lucky enough to survive."
Arthur clenched his fists, his voice growing more resolute.
"My sister saw Luisa doing that with her own eyes. She deliberately stepped on the gas and crashed the car into the wall!
"She was in the driver's seat, protected by the airbag. She didn't get a scratch.
"But my parents were burned alive in that car!
"If Cathie hadn't been lucky enough to escape, I wouldn't have a single family member left!
"To clear her name, Luisa even falsely accused Cathie of grabbing the steering wheel and causing the accident. How despicable she is!"
Arthur's words were fierce. He obviously had a deep hatred for me.
The officers didn't dare to persuade him further. They began packing up, preparing to return to the station.
Listening to his words, I felt as if my heart was being torn apart.
I thought, "Arthur, the one who caused your parents' deaths was your foster sister, Cathie.
I never lied to you..."
By the time Arthur and his team returned to the station, it was already four in the afternoon.
Twenty hours had passed since my death.
In the forensic lab, the team quickly pieced together and examined my body.
I desperately hoped they would open my belly and retrieve the key and evidence from my stomach.
But instead, they focused first on facial reconstruction, DNA testing, and database analysis.
The officers gathered in the conference room with the forensic report, discussing the case.
Even by the end of the workday, they hadn't reached any conclusions.
The old chief took a sip of coffee and, exhausted, said, "Let's work a bit late today, try to identify the victim as soon as possible."
A young officer complained, "The body's been discovered for so long without a missing person's report. What's her family doing?"
Arthur stared at the photos of my body, yet he still didn't realize it was me.
At that moment, I felt a wave of despair.
I suddenly realized that, as my only remaining family in this world, Arthur no longer had a place for me in his heart.
Chapter 4
Suddenly, Arthur sprang to his feet, a look of extreme anxiety crossing his face.
I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement.
I thought, "Arthur, have you finally remembered me?"
He said, "Chief, I'd like to request some time off!
"If the killer is targeting the police by attacking their families, my sister could be in serious danger. She is alone at home!"
The chief agreed to his request. Arthur quickly gathered his things and drove home.
On the way, he floored the gas pedal, speeding down the road.
As I watched Arthur's anxious expression, my heart ached.
In the past, I had often asked Arthur to come home early to help with our son, but he always refused.
I thought he was just obsessed with his work, which was why he neglected our family.
Now, I finally understood. It wasn't about time; it was about he didn't love me.
Half an hour later, his car screeched to a halt in front of the villa.
Cathie Hewitt, wearing a white dress and with her hair in a ponytail, threw herself into Arthur's arms.
"Arthur!"
Arthur affectionately stroked her hair, his eyes showing a tenderness I had never seen before.
"It's good that you're safe."
I noticed that on Cathie's right ring finger, she was wearing my wedding ring!
Furious, I thought, "How dare she!"
I was both anxious and angry, reaching out to snatch the ring back, but my hand passed right through Cathie's body.
Angrily, I thought, "Arthur, look her! Look at your precious sister. She's nothing but a monster!"
Suddenly, as if he heard my call, Arthur grabbed Cathie's left hand and asked in confusion, "Why is her ring on your finger?"
Cathie feigned an innocent look and said, "Last time, Luisa threw your engagement ring in the trash.
"I thought it was a waste, so I picked it up and wore it.
"Arthur, you're not mad at me, are you?"
Cathie's fake vulnerability made me sick.
The ring she had stolen was still stained with my blood.
If Arthur just looked closely, he'd see through her lie.
But Arthur couldn't bring himself to doubt his sister.
After dinner, he sat by the bed and put her to sleep.
"Cathie, it's not safe lately. You should be careful and stay home as much as possible."
A sly gleam flashed in Cathie's eyes.
"Is there another case at the station?"
Arthur frowned. "Yes.
"There was a dismemberment murder today. The victim was a young woman.
"Her body was scattered, and her left ring finger still hasn't been found."
Cathie sat up and naturally snuggled into Arthur's arms, her eyes brimming with tears. "That's so scary.
"Does the police have any leads?"
Arthur sighed, "Not yet.
"In any case, I hope you can try not to go out, it's safer to stay at home."
Within minutes, Cathie had coaxed the progress of the police investigation out of him.
I wanted to cry, but no tears came.
A smug smile played at the corners of Cathie's lips.
Feigning innocence, she added, "Arthur, ever since Mom and Dad passed, you're the only family I have left.
"If Luisa ever comes back and makes me leave, where would I go?"
Arthur comforted her, "She's nothing compared to you.
"As long as I'm here, you'll always be the mistress of this house."
Arthur gently patted Cathie's back, lulling her to sleep.
I stood there, desperate and helpless, watching them.
I thought, "Arthur, wake up! See the true face of the monster beside you!
If not, our child won't last much longer..."
