Chapter 1
1.
Bali, with flowers all around, presented an exceptionally lavish setting.
I was all decked out in this fancy diamond wedding gown that cost over ten million, clutching onto my bouquet like my life depended on it, just standing there feeling super awkward while waiting for my man, Otto Murray.
Ten minutes ago, during the ring exchange, Otto's phone rang.
A familiar female voice came through the speaker.
"Otto, the wind on the top floor is so strong, my chest feels so uncomfortable and suffocating. I want to jump."
Otto's mouth suddenly fell, abandoning me on stage, pacing anxiously under the vow light board, patiently comforting the person on the other end of the call.
I know her, Ivy Hall, Otto's patient.
2
I started dating Otto in our junior year.
By chance, I met the hunk of the medical school.
Otto was exceptionally handsome, his features refined but not enchanting, his posture upright, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, exuding an academic aura.
He was more charming than any of the entertainment industry stars I had ever seen.
I was smitten and began to pursue him relentlessly.
As the young lady from Capital Circle, I gave up street racing, clubbing, removed my earrings, discarded my revealing outfits, started wearing little white dresses, straightened my curly hair, and even began attending early morning classes.
For a whole year, I forced myself to become his ideal type, and eventually, we got together.
Ivy, Otto's junior, was the one who was rejected most miserably among his many suitors.
Otto ignored her when she sent flowers during his speeches.
Otto ignored her when she gave him gifts on his birthday.
Otto once showed me their chat records, where Ivy always tried to flirt with him under the guise of asking for advice.
"Otto, I twisted my ankle, and I heard you are good at orthopedics. Can you help me rub it? It really hurts!"
But she sent a photo of her long and well-shaped legs in black stockings dangling by the bed.
She was coquettish and scheming.
Otto had rejected her countless times, until after his graduation, Ivy drugged him, stripped, and climbed into his bed.
Otto was infuriated, clenched his fists, and roared.
"Even if all the women in the world died, I wouldn't consider you."
Since then, Ivy disappeared for a while.
When she reappeared, it was in Otto's hospital.
Holding a severe depression diagnosis in her hand.
She had become Otto's patient, the psychiatrist.
3
Memories were interrupted.
Otto put away his phone and came back on stage.
The Bali wind was fresh, but Otto's forehead was dotted with fine sweat, his expression troubled, and his haute couture suit was tightly stretched.
The wedding guests were all influential figures from Capital Circle, the hall was silent, and all eyes were on me.
I signaled the host to continue, but Otto suddenly made a stopping gesture and placed the ring box on the plate.
"Alexa, I'm sorry. There's an emergency at the hospital. I have to go back to the country."
He looked at me with guilt, and after a moment of silence, he added.
"Anyway, we've already obtained the marriage certificate, so it doesn't matter if we skip the wedding ceremony."
Otto's voice was not loud but clearly reached my ears.
A dull pain hit my chest as I looked up and met his distracted gaze.
"Is it Ivy who is in trouble?"
Otto looked somewhat guilty, anxiously holding my hand.
"Ivy wants to jump off the building. The doctors and nurses can't persuade her; she says she only wants to see me."
"Let me call the police; they can save her."
I turned to grab my phone, but Otto pulled my wrist.
"No! She's a psychiatric patient and can't handle any stimulation."
Chapter 2
Otto's face was full of concern. I was stunned by his reprimanding tone, feeling momentarily disoriented.
The pain where he gripped my wrist was sharp, but Otto still wouldn't let go, fearing that I might do something to upset his patient, just as I had done before.
4
"Otto!"
I took a deep breath, trying to make my tone sound less cold.
"This is Bali. While you're booking the flight, the police will rescue her.
"If you're really worried, we can cancel the honeymoon, and I'll go back to the hospital with you tomorrow."
This was the most reasonable suggestion I could think of, and the biggest compromise I could make.
But Otto let go of my hand, frowning with a dissatisfied expression.
"We can have the wedding anytime, but if I don't go back, Ivy will die."
I mocked myself inwardly.
How ridiculous.
Even a fake illness was more important than our wedding.
A year ago, when Otto and I met with both our parents, Ivy had an episode.
She grabbed the scissors from a nurse and held them to her neck, jumping around the ward.
The doctors were helpless and had to comply, calling Otto back.
Although his parents tried their best to explain and apologize, and my parents didn't hold a grudge, I became suspicious.
Since she became Otto's patient, every time we had a date, she would use various strange reasons to trick the kind doctor into returning to the hospital.
It was so coincidental that I hired a private detective and found out her depression diagnosis was fake.
I angrily presented the evidence to Ivy.
Otto was clearly shaken and was about to stop being her primary doctor when Ivy slit her wrists.
It happened in the hospital, so she naturally didn't die.
She even got a real psychiatric report as a bonus.
Ivy's extreme actions scared Otto, and he seemed to forget about her faking depression, showering her with kindness and concern.
I caught a glimpse of Ivy's triumphant smile and reasonably suspected she intentionally chose wrong answers on the test.
I tried to scold her awake, but Otto coldly kicked me out of the hospital.
That night, he came home and sincerely apologized, assuring me he only saw her as a patient and wouldn't develop any extra feelings.
5
I believed him, so I tolerated it.
But Otto's reaction today was a slap in my face.
If Ivy wanted to kill herself by jumping off a building, the police would have saved her. Did it really need a doctor to skip his own wedding and take an eight-hour flight back to console her?
"Alexa, try to understand, she's my first patient. I can't just ignore her."
Otto left a self-righteous remark and turned to leave.
I barely managed to grab his sleeve.
"Let's just finish the wedding first. It only takes five minutes to complete the process."
My heart was pounding like a drum, and I trembled, pleading humbly with a quivering voice.
"Alexa, that's enough!"
Otto's face was dark as he pried my hand away, each word stabbing into my heart.
"Even a spoiled princess should know her limits.
"You're just losing a wedding, but Ivy could lose her life."
After saying this, he gave me a disappointed look, swiftly took off his obstructive suit, and dashed towards the airport.
The guests were in an uproar, whispering, their eyes filled with pity for me.
Otto's parents, not understanding the situation, chased after him.
My dad, with a stern face, instructed his assistant to block the news.
My mom, heartbroken, came up to support me, wanting to say something but stopping herself.
Chapter 3
The bouquet fell to the ground, and I looked down at the sparkling diamonds on my skirt.
I had sewn them on with so much joy, stitch by stitch.
My vision blurred, and I looked up at the sky.
How annoying! Even Bali had bad air.
6
Unsurprisingly, I ended up trending online: "Capital Circle's Young Lady Was Stood Up at the Altar" and "Davis Group Heiress Ditched by Fianc, Billionaire Wedding Becomes a Joke."
In my seafront house, I never took off my wedding dress, eyes glued to the screen.
My mother couldn't bear it any longer, choking back tears as she hesitantly spoke.
"Girl, it's been two days. At least eat something."
"Maybe Otto got busy at the hospital and forgot to reply to your messages."
My dad snorted, his tone filled with displeasure.
"Forgot? What could be more important than Alexa's wedding?
"I never liked that boy, who's always getting too close to a mental patient and manipulating my daughter! What kind of logic is that? Does he really think the Davis family is an easy target?"
I stayed silent, my hunger making me see spots.
Finally, the screen lit up. I hurriedly clicked it open, but when I saw the picture, my blood ran cold.
A front-facing photo of Otto was exposed on the trending list. He was smiling and holding Ivy's hand, heading to board the Ferris wheel.
"Shocking! Capital Circle's Runaway Groom Cheating, Publicly Holding Hands with Another Woman at an Amusement Park."
Thanks to the paparazzi, the 4K ultra-high-definition picture showed Otto's white phone conspicuously in his pocket.
Tears fell on the back of my hand, my heart aching to numbness.
Looking at the message on Line that said, "I'll wait for you to come back and continue the wedding," I cried and then laughed.
"Look, Alexa, you are a complete fool.
Otto doesn't love you. Your wedding, everything about you, can't compare to the weight of a patient in his heart."
Suddenly, I went mad, throwing my phone at the wall and starting to tear off my wedding dress.
My palm was cut by the diamonds, blood dripping onto the pure white gown, glaringly red.
My parents were frightened by my actions. My mother cried and held me tightly, gripping my hands.
"Honey, don't do this. You're scaring me."
My dad hurriedly called the front desk for a medical kit.
Overwhelmed with hatred, I broke free from my mother's grasp, stood up sharply, and tried to tear off the humiliating dress.
But I stood up too quickly, blacking out and fainting.
