Chapter 4

Emily sat back, barely paying attention to the laughter and chatter around her. She felt like an outsider in this room full of people cheering on games and half-truths. Miranda, however, was thoroughly enjoying herself, basking in the attention as she grinned at Jeremy, who was, as always, right by her side.

“No need to defend me, Jeremy,” she said with a playful smile. “We’re all just here to have a good time. I’ll be brave and go with truth.”

The men around the table cheered, immediately leaning in with prying questions. One of them, smirking, spoke up. “Alright, Miranda, life must have been exciting overseas! Tell us—who was your first?”

Miranda froze, her gaze flickering briefly before she broke into a sly smile, glancing toward Jeremy. “Oh, it’s an old story, ancient history. I doubt you’d even know him, but if you must know… it was during the summer before senior year of high school, right before my parents and I left for good.”

She paused for dramatic effect, her voice taking on a dreamy quality. “It just… happened. We couldn’t control our feelings.” She lifted her chin, her eyes settling provocatively on Emily.

The implication was clear. This wasn’t just a story—it was a declaration, a reminder of the history she shared with Jeremy. The room buzzed with whispered reactions, but Emily only smiled back coolly, unfazed.

Cara leaned over and whispered, “Can you believe her? Acting like she’s just telling a cute story?”

Emily gave a faint shrug, lowering her voice. “Let her have it, Cara. I’m done competing with memories.” But she felt a strange, quiet sense of closure settle in. What was the point of holding onto someone who still clung to the past?

Another question came up and this time, it was directed at Jeremy. Miranda leaned in and subtly whispered something to the person asking, who then smirked, looking straight at Jeremy.

“So, Jeremy, here’s one for you. Do you care more about your new love or your old love?”

A murmur of anticipation rippled through the room, eyes darting between Jeremy and Emily. She could feel the tension, as though everyone was waiting for him to make a grand confession. Emily silently hoped, just once, that he’d have the courage to say something real.

But Jeremy chuckled, lifting his glass with a practiced ease. “I’ll take a pass on that one,” he said, grinning. “Guess I’ll have to go with a drink instead.”

A few people laughed, a couple jeering as he tipped the drink back in one smooth motion. Cara rolled her eyes. “Of course he dodges,” she muttered. “What a brave soul.”

The game continued, the bottle spinning back and forth across the table, the questions becoming increasingly absurd and the atmosphere rowdier. Emily was beginning to feel drained by it all when, finally, the bottle pointed directly at Miranda again.

Cara’s eyes sparkled with mischief. She raised her glass with a wicked grin, leaning forward as she delivered her question. “Alright, Miranda. How do you feel about being, let’s say, the other woman?”

The room grew hushed as everyone leaned forward in shock, watching the exchange. Miranda’s smile faltered for a split second, her cheeks flushing. She forced a laugh, but Jeremy shot Emily a hard look, his voice tense.

“Emily, could you maybe keep your friend in check? Miranda doesn’t need this right now.”

Emily raised her eyebrows, holding his gaze evenly. “You think Cara’s the problem here?”

Cara didn’t skip a beat. She leaned back with a mocking smile. “Relax, Jeremy. I just asked her a yes-or-no question. Besides, it’s a game, right? Miranda, you just have to answer or take a drink.”

Miranda quickly regained her composure, slipping her hand into Jeremy’s. “It’s fine, Jeremy,” she said, her voice sickly sweet. “Really, I don’t mind.” She smiled graciously, then reached for her glass. “I think I’ll choose a drink this time.”

As she downed the drink, Jeremy’s gaze shifted to Emily, an accusing look in his eyes as though she’d somehow caused Miranda some grave harm. But Emily only met his look with quiet detachment, her face unreadable. She no longer cared about what he thought of her.

The game continued, laughter and shouts filling the air, but for Emily, the night had lost its appeal. She glanced toward the door, itching to escape the claustrophobic room. But just as she was about to excuse herself, she saw Miranda looking at her, a gleam of satisfaction in her eyes.

Miranda leaned forward, tapping her fingers against her glass. “Alright, my turn. Emily, I’ll ask something simple—nothing personal, of course,” she said, her voice dripping with feigned innocence.

Emily waited, her face impassive, bracing herself for whatever petty question Miranda had in mind.

Miranda leaned in, eyes gleaming with barely concealed malice. “Emily, how does it feel to lose?”

The words were a challenge, laced with triumph. The room went quiet as everyone’s eyes fell on Emily, waiting for her reaction. For a moment, she simply looked at Miranda, her expression unreadable. Then, slowly, she smiled, a calm, knowing smile that caught Miranda off guard.

“Oh, Miranda,” she said, her voice steady and calm. “I didn’t lose anything. I finally let go of something that wasn’t worth holding onto.”

A ripple of murmurs went through the crowd and for once, Miranda’s mask slipped. She opened her mouth as though to respond but then closed it, clearly thrown off by Emily’s confidence.

Cara let out a delighted laugh, lifting her glass toward Emily. “To knowing your worth,” she declared loudly. Emily clinked her glass against Cara’s, feeling a warmth spread through her that had nothing to do with the drink.

Miranda shifted uncomfortably, her composure momentarily faltering as Jeremy fidgeted beside her, his gaze avoiding Emily’s. In that moment, Emily saw him for what he was—someone who lacked the courage to choose, someone who would rather keep everyone at a distance than truly commit to anyone.

The tension broke as someone suggested another round of drinks and the conversation resumed, the room’s attention shifting away from her. Emily seized the chance, slipping Cara a meaningful look.

“Ready to get out of here?” Emily murmured.

Cara gave an eager nod, flashing a triumphant grin. “I thought you’d never ask.”

They stood, catching a few surprised glances, but Emily didn’t care. As they made their way to the door, Emily felt a sense of closure settling in her chest, freeing her in ways she hadn’t expected. Just as they reached the doorway, she looked back one last time, catching Jeremy’s gaze. He looked as if he might say something, but she didn’t wait.

She and Cara stepped out into the cool night air, a new sense of freedom washing over her as they left the crowded room—and Jeremy—behind.

As they walked down the street, Cara slipped an arm around her shoulders. “You know, Em, tonight went better than I could’ve planned. You looked amazing back there.”

Emily laughed, feeling lighter than she had in years. “Thanks, Cara. For everything.”

Cara grinned, steering her toward a nearby café. “Come on, let’s get a real drink. The night’s still young and we’ve got celebrating to do.”

For the first time in a long time, Emily felt ready to celebrate—not just leaving Jeremy behind, but the start of something new. And as they walked through the night, she realized just how good it felt to finally be free.

Chapter 5

"If you knew your boyfriend had betrayed you, would you still hold on, refusing to let go?” Miranda’s voice was light, mocking, her gaze fixed on Emily with a smirk.

But Emily didn’t even glance at Jeremy, who sat beside Miranda, looking uneasy. Instead, her reply was dry and resolute, cutting through the tension like a blade. “Why would I cling to trash?” she asked. “Sometimes, letting go is the only smart choice.”

Without waiting for a response, Emily stood up, grabbed her wine glass and drained it with a single, smooth motion. She set the empty glass down firmly, her gaze unwavering. “Excuse us,” she said coolly, nodding to Cara, who looked ready to burst into applause. “We have more important things to do.”

With that, Emily strode out of the room, Cara close behind, barely containing her smile. Once they were out in the hall, Cara gave her a thumbs-up, laughing. “Now that’s how you shut them down, Em. That was incredible!”

But before Emily could respond, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from behind. She turned and there was Jeremy, his face twisted in irritation as he caught up with them.

“Emily,” he snapped, his voice laced with frustration. “What exactly was that all about? You show up, throw accusations around and now you’re leaving without an explanation?”

Emily raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. “An explanation? For what, Jeremy? For finally seeing you for what you are?”

He stared at her, still wearing his typical look of superiority. “This isn’t just some game, Emily. If you’re trying to prove a point, at least make it clear.”

Emily smirked, glancing at Cara. “Cara, wait for me outside?”

Cara hesitated, her gaze flicking between them before nodding. She shot Jeremy a glare, then walked ahead, leaving Emily and Jeremy alone in the hallway.

Emily turned back to Jeremy, her voice calm but sharp. “You think I’m causing a scene? You’re the one who keeps hiding behind excuses and acting like I owe you an explanation for every move I make. That question earlier—the one about a two-timing jerk? That was for you. I just thought I’d finally spell it out.”

Jeremy’s face flushed with anger and he took a step forward, reaching out as if to grab her arm. But before he could, Miranda appeared beside him, stepping in with her usual innocent look.

“Oh, Jeremy, this is all my fault,” Miranda cooed, her voice soft and laced with fake regret. “I never meant to come between you two. It’s just… a game, Emily. I’m sure you understand.”

Emily gave her a long, unimpressed look before replying, her voice laced with sarcasm. “Oh, I understand perfectly, Miranda. You two go right ahead and enjoy yourselves. I don’t mind at all.”

She turned back to Jeremy, her tone cold. “After all, I know how ‘innocent’ your friendship is, right? You’re practically family. Who am I to stand in the way?”

Jeremy’s jaw clenched, something unreadable flickering in his eyes as he took a step forward. “You really think that?”

Emily’s smile widened, though her eyes were sharp. “Absolutely. I have every reason to trust you both. After all, who wouldn’t believe in a friendship as pure as yours?”

Her words left him visibly frustrated, but before he could respond, Miranda gave a sudden, dramatic gasp and stumbled, clutching her ankle as if she were in pain. She whimpered, looking up at Emily with wide, accusing eyes.

“Emily,” she said with a quivering voice, “I just wanted to say goodbye. You didn’t have to push me!”

The entire act was laughably obvious, but Jeremy’s expression turned dark as he immediately leaned down, wrapping an arm protectively around her. “Miranda, are you alright?” he murmured, his voice filled with concern. Then, his gaze shot up to Emily, filled with irritation. “I can’t believe you’d do this, Emily. I thought you were better than this.”

Emily laughed, the sound soft but filled with disbelief. “Are you seriously buying this? Jeremy, she’s faking it. I didn’t even touch her.”

Miranda put on a pitiful expression, a tear forming at the corner of her eye as she clutched her ankle. “Jeremy, it hurts… I think I twisted it. Can you help me?”

Jeremy shot Emily a withering glare as he helped Miranda stand, his voice filled with disdain. “You know, I really overestimated you, Emily. You clearly can’t handle anyone else in my life but yourself.”

Emily’s calm mask finally cracked, but she kept her voice even. “Well, Jeremy, you don’t have to worry about me ‘handling’ anyone in your life anymore.” She took a deep breath, gathering the strength to say the words she’d been holding back. “In fact, I’m done with this entirely.”

But before she could say more, Miranda whimpered louder, leaning into Jeremy’s chest. “Jeremy, please… let’s just go. I don’t want to cause any more problems.”

Jeremy’s face hardened as he glared at Emily, his words cold and final. “You know what, Emily? Just get out of here. We’re done.”

Emily stood still, feeling a final pang of hurt twist in her chest, but she held her ground. “Trust me, I’m not planning on sticking around,” she replied, voice steady.

With that, she turned and walked away, not bothering to look back. She pushed through the door and found Cara waiting for her outside, eyes full of concern.

“Em, you okay?” Cara asked softly.

Emily nodded, finally letting out a shaky breath. “Better than ever, actually.” She glanced over her shoulder once, taking in the last image of Jeremy with Miranda, who was still clinging to him, her face the picture of victory. But Emily felt no urge to fight, no desire to turn back.

Cara wrapped an arm around her, guiding her away from the building and into the cool night. “You know, Em, that was brave. Not everyone can walk away like that.”

Emily gave her friend a grateful smile, feeling the weight of years lift from her shoulders. “Thanks, Cara. I guess I just finally realized I’m done wasting my time on someone who never valued me.”

Cara smiled, squeezing her shoulder. “That’s the Emily I know. Now, come on—there’s a bottle of wine waiting for us at my place and I think it’s time to toast to your freedom.”

As they walked down the street, Emily felt lighter with every step, leaving the pain, the betrayal and the toxic remnants of her old relationship behind. For the first time in years, she felt a glimmer of hope for the future, one where she could finally live for herself.

And as she glanced at Cara, laughing as they talked about nothing and everything, Emily knew she was finally ready to embrace that future—without Jeremy and without regrets.

Chapter 6

Emily walked away from the scene, her steps steady, her heart lighter than it had been in years. She had originally planned to wait until she’d left the city to send Jeremy a final message, cutting ties for good. But after tonight, there was no point in waiting. His heart was already with Miranda.

Standing beneath the streetlights, she took out her phone and typed a simple message:

[Jeremy, it’s over. I won’t be reaching out again. Take care.]

With a final tap, she sent it and blocked his number, exhaling as if a weight had lifted from her shoulders. The thought of breaking up with Jeremy once would have left her feeling lost and devastated. But now? Now it felt like freedom.

When Emily returned to the apartment, Cara was already waiting, sprawled across the couch, her face lighting up as Emily stepped through the door. Without a word, Emily plopped onto the bed and wrapped her friend in a tight hug.

“Cara,” she announced with a grin, “it’s official. As of tonight, I’m single.”

Cara cheered, pulling her into an enthusiastic hug. “Finally! Welcome to the world of happy singles. We’ve got a lot of lost time to make up for.”

The next few days were a blur of packing and sorting as Emily prepared to leave the city and everything it held for her. On her last day, she received a message from one of her former professors, asking if she could stop by for a visit. The professor had been a mentor to her and it felt right to say goodbye properly, so she quickly put together a small gift and made her way over.

What Emily didn’t expect was to find Jeremy waiting there, his face darkening when she walked into the cozy living room. The professor greeted her warmly, clearly unaware of the tension in the air.

“Emily, I heard you and Jeremy were having a bit of a rough patch,” her professor said, smiling kindly. “Thought I’d help you two sort things out.”

Emily forced a polite smile, but Jeremy was already glaring, clearly seeing this as something else entirely. Without a word, he grabbed her arm and pulled her outside, his grip tight and unyielding.

“Jeremy,” she protested, wincing as his fingers pressed into her skin. “Let go of me—this is ridiculous!”

He finally released her, but not without a sneer. “So, this is how low you’ve sunk, Emily?” he spat. “Sending some pathetic breakup text and then running to the professor to try to get back in my good graces?”

She was taken aback, her mind spinning. “You think I planned this?” she asked incredulously. “I didn’t even know you’d be here.”

Jeremy’s face twisted with anger. “Of course, you’d say that. One second, you’re begging for a breakup and the next, you’re cozying up to people who can talk me back into giving you another chance. You’re pathetic.”

Emily clenched her fists, steadying herself. The past half-year flashed through her mind, the countless times she’d questioned him, pleading to understand why he was so distant, why he constantly disappeared to see Miranda. Each time, his response had been the same—cold, indifferent and dismissive.

She remembered herself, desperate, crying, pleading with him to stay. “Please, Jeremy, don’t leave me. I’ll be better. I won’t ask questions anymore, I’ll trust you.”

But no more. Emily straightened, her gaze piercing. “You think this is all some game for me? I sent that text because I meant it, Jeremy. I’m done. I don’t know why the professor invited us both today, but if I did, I’d have told them to forget it.”

But her honesty seemed only to fuel his anger further. “Stop pretending, Emily!” he scoffed, his voice dripping with disdain. “This manipulative, careful act of yours is exactly what I can’t stand.”

The insult fell flat, failing to sting as it once would have. Emily’s voice was calm, almost indifferent. “Fine, Jeremy. I’ll be whatever you need to believe I am—pathetic, desperate, or crazy. Because whatever I am, it’s clear I’m not Miranda.”

Jeremy’s face darkened at the mention of Miranda’s name, his jaw tightening as he spat out, “Leave Miranda out of this. She’s the only one who’s had a good word to say about you.”

Emily couldn’t help a dry laugh. “Then maybe I should give her a ‘best friend’ award for all her charity.”

Jeremy’s expression was a mix of frustration and disbelief, but she didn’t give him a chance to respond. She turned and walked away, leaving him standing alone in the professor’s yard.

Back at her apartment, Cara was waiting as Emily walked in, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity. “So? How’d it go?”

Emily exhaled, dropping her bag with a relieved sigh. “As expected. Jeremy didn’t believe a word I said. Somehow, in his mind, I’m still the one who’s wrong.”

Cara wrapped an arm around her friend, shaking her head. “Forget him, Em. He’s a coward who can’t handle the truth. You deserve someone who won’t leave you guessing.”

Emily managed a smile, feeling her friend’s support wash over her. “I know. I just can’t believe it took me this long to see it.”

Cara gave her shoulder a squeeze, smiling back. “Well, you see it now. And tomorrow, we’re leaving all this behind. So let’s make tonight count, okay?”

Emily nodded, grateful for the fresh start that awaited her. Tomorrow was the beginning of a new chapter, one where she’d finally be free to be herself. She knew she was done with Jeremy and as she prepared for her new life, she was also ready to reclaim the confidence she’d once had.
