Chapter 2
Medical resources nearby were limited and underdeveloped, and this hospital was particularly remote. I could tell that the surgeon called in at the last minute lacked skill.
"The child is still breathing. Hurry, give me the scalpel!" the surgeon said.
Hearing that Wesley was still alive reignited my hope.
At that critical moment, Lilian's fierce voice rang out from outside the door. "You're all useless doctors! What do you mean by 'minor injury'? He's bleeding this badly. What if he gets tetanus? Get every doctor out here right now!"
Someone tried to object, saying, "No, we can't. The doctors inside are performing a rescue. They can't be interrupted."
My heart felt like it had been pierced by a blade. I only hoped that Lilian would allow Wesley to receive proper treatment. If nothing else, I hoped it would be for the eight years we had both longed for this child.
Just then, I heard a gunshot echo throughout the entire hospital.
Immediately after, Lilian roared, "Get every doctor out here right now!"
The next second, someone forced the operating room door open.
A lackey covered his mouth and whispered to Anna Spencer, the gang's second-in-command, "Anna, isn't this the baby from the photo in Lilian's wallet? Lilian has a son in Zorveth. Could this be him?"
Anna shot him a warning look and scolded him under her breath. "If he were Lilian's son, wouldn't she recognize him? We just need to follow her orders."
Through the glass door, I could just make out the blurred face of Lilian's new husband.
Then I remembered. He was Lilian's first love, Kenneth Taylor. People in our social circle used to say that she married me only to provoke him. Yet her obsessive affection after our marriage had made me believe that she truly loved me.
On the operating table beside me, Wesley flailed his hands in a desperate attempt, as if trying to reach for help. He wanted to live so badly, but his movements grew weaker with each passing second.
Over the past two months, he had cried in my arms countless times, clutching my finger with his tiny hand and sucking on it. He was so fragile and delicate. How could Lilian bear to have others hurt him like this?
In the end, when Lilian summoned the surgeon away, Wesley stopped struggling.
Outside the operating room, more than a dozen doctors surrounded Kenneth, who was dressed in his groom's suit. They focused on a wound on his hand that was less than four inches long. The one orchestrating all of this was Lilian.
Hearing that a baby still awaited rescue in the operating room, she sneered. "It's just a child. If he dies, so be it. His mother wasn't even there during the rescue. Even if he survives, he'll still be a motherless child. Hurry and ease my husband's pain."
As she spoke, her gaze returned to Kenneth's wound. She cradled his hand, blowing on it and even licking it. She was utterly overwhelmed with worry.
Lilian was right. She hadn't been there during the rescue, and even if Wesley survived, no one would care for him. When did she become capable of saying something so cruel about our child?
I looked at the newlyweds outside the operating room, their blissful love almost painful to witness. It was as if Wesley were nothing but a cursed burden. I even felt that if Wesley died, Lilian would be happier.
At the thought, a wave of despair washed over me.
Chapter 3
Outside the operating room, Kenneth's wound had nearly healed after being bandaged.
"It doesn't hurt anymore. Lily, you're so good to me," Kenneth said.
He held Lilian's hand and smiled gently. "Lily, I've heard that a fetal heart can help strengthen the heart. You know I've always had palpitations."
"Go take that baby's heart, dry it, and get it ready for Kenneth's treatment," Lilian said with disgust. "He already had asthma. Dying was what he deserved."
Moments later, two tattooed men barged in and slammed into me with such force that I felt my limbs going numb. Despair washed over me as I watched them approach Wesley with knives.
Once inside the operating room, the same lackey said to Anna, "I really think that this child is Lilian's son. Should we ask her? He looks far too much like him."
Anna immediately snapped at him. "Are you stupid? Even if he were Lilian's child, he would still be nothing but an unwanted bastard. Didn't you see how frantic Lilian was over Mr. Taylor? If she truly loved Zachary, do you think that anyone in this territory would dare lay a hand on her child?"
As soon as she finished speaking, they forcibly cut open Wesley's chest and pulled out his heart, dripping with blood. They did all this simply because Lilian wanted to use Wesley's heart to strengthen Kenneth's.
My heart ached unbearably. I went mad and tried to stop them, but my body wouldn't move.
Wesley was still so young. He hadn't even had the chance to truly see the world, yet his mother, who once loved him most, had now ended his life with her own hands.
Just as all hope drained from me, Kenneth leaned in and whispered, "You brought this on yourself for keeping Lily all to yourself for so many years."
I glimpsed the taunting smirk on Kenneth's lips, and my heart jolted with shock. Did he know who I am?
He said, "You shouldn't have had a child with Lily first. Well, now the child is dead."
After saying that, he pulled Lilian into his arms. "Lily, don't leave just yet. That baby's eyes are staring at me. It's terrifying. We should just cremate him."
"Let's have him cremated. I don't want him frightening you," Lilian said.
Lilian smiled indulgently at Kenneth. "Kenneth, hand out the bonuses to the men during the second half of the wedding. I won't be going.
"Zachary is still at home alone, taking care of Wesley. Teravon is such a godforsaken place that it doesn't even have a decent surgeon. If Wesley were to have an acute episode later and end up in a local hospital, he would be treated by these amateur doctors. It would break my heart."
When we first came to Teravon, it was Lilian who couldn't bear to leave Wesley behind and insisted on keeping him close. Yet in the end, she was the one who ended his life with her own hands.
After Lilian finished speaking, she finally turned on her phone to check the message I had sent.
Someone stepped on Wesley again, pressing him helplessly to the ground.
"That baby is so disgusting. How could you still step on it? His head is flattened. You scared Kenneth," she said.
Lilian covered Kennenth's eyes while waiting for her phone to power on. When she saw the message, her expression turned ashen. She ignored Kenneth in his wedding suit and spun around to rush back.
With the last of my strength, I ripped off the token of love Lilian had once given me and hurled it at her.
