Chapter 2

Clara POV

The front door of the penthouse opened and slammed shut, the sound reverberating through the space. Heavy footsteps echoed across the cold marble floor.

Lucian strode into the master bedroom, roughly loosening his silk tie. The cloying scent of expensive whiskey and cheap cigars followed him in.

He spotted me standing by the open vault and immediately started scolding me.

He snapped that I had broken protocol by leaving the banquet early, claiming I had humiliated him in front of the Underboss. He then lavishly praised Livia and his mother for saving his face and smoothing things over with the elders.

Walking over to his dresser, he unclasped his watch and took it off.

He turned to me with an entitled sneer and demanded I transfer funds from my laundering accounts by tomorrow morning. He insisted he needed the cash to entertain his uncles and his soldiers for the rest of the week.

I picked up a cleaning rag from the vanity and threw it directly at his face.

It smacked against his cheek before dropping harmlessly to the floor.

Lucian's eyes darkened instantly as he stepped toward me.

I stood my ground. I demanded to know if he was aware that Livia had stolen my untraceable gold and my luxury goods.

Lucian stopped, calmly brushing down the lapels of his suit jacket. He dismissively admitted that he already knew about it.

He told me I was an established woman now, arguing that I did not need to dress up or use expensive creams anymore. The gold and the goods, he claimed, were better suited for a young, fresh girl like Livia.

He actually had the audacity to tell me that my using them was a waste of syndicate resources.

I stared at him, utterly paralyzed by the sheer disbelief of the words coming out of his mouth.

Lucian pointed an accusatory finger at me, deflecting the blame entirely. He said I was the one who had ordered him to keep an eye on Livia in the first place, calling me paranoid and hysterical for even checking my own vault.

My chest heaved as anger flared hot and bright in my veins.

My voice was level, each word a chip of ice. "The contraband she took is valued at precisely eighty-eight thousand dollars."

I gave him a strict ultimatum. I told him to return the goods by midnight, or I would bring the theft directly to the Consigliere.

Lucian's posture shifted immediately. The stark threat of the Consigliere getting involved sobered him up in a heartbeat.

His tone softened into something sickeningly sweet as he took a step closer and reached for my hand.

I yanked my hand away in disgust.

He immediately played on my sympathies, calling Livia a tragic soul from the slums who had never had anything nice in her life. He promised me he would discipline her tomorrow.

He begged me not to break Omertà, insisting that ruining his standing before we officially wed would destroy our future family.

He relentlessly attempted to manipulate my emotions, highlighting Livia's pitiful background and reminding me of how much she supposedly looked up to me.

I stared at his hypocritical face, feeling my heart harden into solid stone.

I remembered exactly how he had manipulated me into sponsoring Livia in the first place. He had told me his mother respected a charitable woman, weaponizing my desperate desire for a real family against me. Sponsoring a slum girl, he had promised, would be the perfect stepping stone to secure the Don's approval for our marriage.

I recalled the day Livia was accepted into the Family's clean scholarship program.

She had sat in my living room, weeping uncontrollably. She had held my hands, swearing absolute loyalty to me and Lucian, calling us her saviors.

Now, I began to deeply question her true nature. I remembered my own painful sacrifices—giving up my education to run illicit operations on the unforgiving streets, all so I could survive and build the network of casinos and safe houses that now bore my name.

I did not turn. I simply walked away from him, leaving him standing there, and told him to use the guest room.

In the dead of night, the penthouse was completely silent.

I sat in the nursery in the dark, holding my daughter close to my chest as I fed her a bottle.

Through the gloom, I noticed a thin strip of yellow light spilling from under the door of Lucian's study down the hall.

I carefully put my daughter back in her crib. Walking quietly down the hallway, I pressed my back against the wall next to the study door.

I heard Lucian speaking, his voice a low, hurried rasp. He was on his burner phone.

He was talking to the Matriarch.

He warned his mother to tell Livia to back off, insisting that she needed to stop stealing from my vault immediately.

He sounded absolutely terrified, whispering that if Clara brought the Consigliere into this, they would run a full investigation.

He warned that if the syndicate investigated the theft, they would find out the truth about Livia's rigged scholarship. They would inevitably discover their treason against the Family.

I pressed my palm flat against the cold wall, steadying my breath. Eight years of my life, my fortune, my youth—all poured into a man who was now conspiring with his mother to protect a thief. My eyes drifted back toward the nursery, where my daughter lay sleeping. I had been a fool for love. But I would not be a fool as a mother.

The blueprint for their destruction began to take shape in my mind before the sun had even risen.

Chapter 3

Clara POV

I stood frozen in the dark hallway, the shadows clinging to me like a shroud.

Lucian continued talking behind the closed door of his study. I heard him say that Livia's SAT scores were completely falsified. He admitted that he and his mother had used syndicate connections to illegally secure her spot in the Family's elite educational program.

The Matriarch's voice crackled loudly through the phone speaker, its venom unmistakable even through the distortion.

She dismissed the risk completely. She told Lucian that I was only good for laundering money, nothing more. She reminded him that he had already promised to marry Livia once I was out of the picture.

She laughed a harsh, grating laugh. She said Clara was trapped because she had nowhere else to run.

The carefully constructed reality I had built around him for eight years felt like a cheap plastic film, now scorched through by the heat of their words, revealing the grotesque truth beneath.

I walked back to the nursery, my steps heavy but silent. I locked the door behind me. I held my infant daughter tight against my chest, listening to her soft breathing. I spent a sleepless night plotting my next move, staring into the darkness until dawn.

The next morning, I was running on pure adrenaline.

I dressed in a sharp business suit, arming myself in tailored armor. I bypassed Lucian entirely and drove straight to my casino headquarters.

I distrusted the entire Lucian faction, knowing their loyalty lay only with blood. I needed someone I could rely on, someone entirely outside their web. I contacted a neutral Family faction and hired a highly vetted, loyal Nursemaid to guard my daughter.

I spent the morning managing the VIP rooms and quietly moving my liquid assets into encrypted offshore accounts. I also placed a call to a private medical records archivist I had used years ago, requesting a sealed copy of a file I had never thought I would need. The archivist confirmed delivery within twenty-four hours.

At noon, my phone rang. It was the Nursemaid.

When I answered, her words tumbled out in a rush of panic, explaining that she had been barred from her duties. She said Livia had showed up at the penthouse and insisted on taking over the child's care. Livia had absolutely no experience with infants, making the demand both absurd and dangerous.

I took a deep breath, forcing my rising panic down. I told the Nursemaid to wait in the hall, promising I was on my way.

I ran to my SUV and sped back to the penthouse, breaking every traffic law in the city as a cold, metallic pressure built behind my sternum.

I burst out of the elevator and found the Nursemaid locked out in the hallway, wringing her hands in distress.

She reported that the child had been snatched away from her arms. Lucian had called the front desk and ordered her fired, claiming Livia would do it for free to save the Caporegime money.

I reassured the Nursemaid, my voice eerily calm as I told her I was doubling her hazard pay. I commanded her to stay loyal to me and wait by the door.

I stepped back, gathered my strength, and kicked the heavy door open.

The luxurious penthouse was trashed; luggage and debris were scattered across the hardwood floor, a deliberate display of disrespect.

The Matriarch was lounging on my custom white sofa, looking entirely too comfortable as she ate grapes from a silver bowl, unfazed by the chaos.

Meanwhile, agonizing, hoarse cries echoed from the nursery down the hall, tearing at my heart.

The Matriarch looked at me smugly, informing me that Livia had dropped out of college this morning. She said Livia would now live with them to serve Lucian, acting as if this were perfectly normal. She even demanded that I pay Livia a fifteen-thousand-dollar monthly allowance for her troubles.

I ignored her delusional demands and ran straight toward the master suite, following the sound of destruction.

I found Livia in my closet. The floor was a ruin of shredded silk, the remains of my designer wardrobe destroyed by a pair of fabric scissors she had cast aside. She now stood before my hidden wall panel, her fingers scrabbling frantically at the biometric safe that held my operational funds.

But then, the cries from the nursery grew weaker, morphing into a terrifying silence.

I turned and sprinted to the baby's room, abandoning Livia to her petty vandalism.

I found my infant daughter left completely naked in the master bathtub. The water was freezing cold, and her skin was turning a pale, terrifying shade of blue. Her cries were weak and suffocating, barely escaping her trembling lips.

My vision went entirely red, consumed by a primal, maternal rage.

I pulled her out of the freezing water, my hands shaking as I wrapped her tightly in a thick towel. The Nursemaid, drawn by the commotion, appeared at the bathroom door. I thrust my shivering daughter into the woman's arms. "Call an ambulance," I hissed.

Livia had followed me out of the closet; she stood in the bedroom doorway, the corner of her mouth hitched upward in a small, ugly twitch of triumph.

My hand moved before thought, the crack of my palm against her cheek echoing off the marble like a pistol shot. She stumbled back, a crimson bloom spreading from the corner of her lip as she crumpled to the floor.

My voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a death sentence. "Get out of my house."

The Matriarch rushed into the room, her composure finally breaking as she lunged to protect Livia.

She screamed at me, claiming Livia was just toughening the child up, an excuse so vile it made my stomach turn. She berated me for only caring about business and failing to breed a son.

She shouted that I should be grateful Livia was willing to carry Lucian's true heir.

The Matriarch puffed out her chest, declaring that Livia would take over the household, the husband, and the bloodline. She asked me what more I could possibly want, as if my entire existence was meant to serve them.

Suddenly, the Nursemaid interrupted us from the doorway, her voice shaking with panic.

She said the baby had spiked a dangerous fever and passed out. She urged that we required immediate transport to the syndicate-affiliated hospital, or it would be too late.

I looked down at the Matriarch and Livia, huddled together on my marble floor, their faces twisted with defiance and greed. I did not scream at them. I did not threaten them. I simply memorized every detail of this moment—the freezing water, my daughter's blue lips, the smirk on Livia's face, the Matriarch's smug lecture on heirs. I would need this memory later, when it came time to ensure that none of them ever drew another comfortable breath.

"This is the last time either of you will ever step foot in my home," I said, my voice terrifyingly calm. "And the next time you see my daughter's face, it will be from the witness stand of a Family tribunal."
